That’s a limiting comment because quite frankly their overall dancing I think it’s the greatest of all time they had everything in there dancing poise posture expression interpretation acrobatics they could do it all they look classy as hell when they dance they could’ve them ballet if they wanted to do it and they would’ve excelled at that to me they’re the greatest of all time they just happen to have tap shoes on their feet
I had been a fan for years of gene kelly and Fred Astaire, thinking them the pinnacle of that age of movie dance choreography, then I saw my first Nicholas Brothers video. While gene and Fred are so very talented, the pure athleticism and joy the brothers seem to shine with is Jaw-dropping.
The athleticism is simply amazing. I am not taking anything away from the artistic value, but their strength to weight ratio must have been off the charts.
@grandfathergeek You might want to take a look at some of Gene Nelson's videos. I would suggest starting with his dance in a gym from "She's Working Her Way Through College".
The Nicholas Brothers choreography is always jaw dropping. They never lapse into routine and never mail it in. All these years and their dancing remains visually arresting and simply stunning.
I like the way you stated your praise of these fabulous gentlemen. They were dancer/athletes that we are fortunate to be able see and appreciate today.
Me too. Their posture, the arm moves, the precision dancing, the smiles, the athleticism, the endurance, and I have read that they could do most of their performances in one take.
Insofar as i can tell, Harold and Fayard Nicholas choreographed and performed that routine on a standing set---aside from the reinforced 'prop' suitcases and some sand on one of the floors, they adapted their moves without having anything constructed-to-measure for them by the studio's art department. WOW.
Met Harold in Houston once. It was at a Play called the Sophisticated Lady. Many years ago. I didnt know who he was. He was part of the cast, he gave me his autograph. He was very nice. I still have the autograph with the pamphlet of all the other cast members. I just looked him up one day on utube and there he was. Omg what talent!!!
I once saw the younger Nicholas bro in person once--Harold--at Roseland in NYC, where he was attending the 85th birthday party of another dancing great, the lindy hopper Frank Manning!
The Nicholas Brother choreographed a lot of dance moves that singers of 60 and 70's were doing. Harold later on was in movie the Five Heart Beats. Rest In Peace Harold and Fayard Nicholas.
As much as I love Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly, I truly think these brothers are superior technically. They defy gravity. Had they been white, they would’ve shone brighter in Hollywood as stars.
I agree. Astaire was good but not jaw dropping or anything to lose your decorum over. I personally felt Gene Kelly was better and most certainly Bob Fosse. Astaire frankly does not belong in the same sentence with the Nicholas Brothers. The same way Benny Goodman does not belong in the same sentence with Duke Ellington or Count Basie. Or Elvis Presley with Jackie Wilson. We have to be honest here. This is The United States and people who are honest with themselves will acknowledge that the specter of race which came with the very conception of the United States, was an underlining factor in WHO received the full support, promotion and all other trappings that made sure certain entertainers would become household names and the face of their respective genre while others were denied that same consideration.
No one. Gregory Hines said people would say he and his brother would be the next Nicholas bros., until he saw them. When he did he realized nobody would be the next Nicholas bros. There is a really good vid up here of him dissecting and commenting on the Stormy Weather routine. Really good.
I think the only movie they were in with Gene Kelly was The Pirate, in 1948. If they were born in a different place and time - they would have surpassed both Astaire and Kelly. And any other dancers.
IITS VERY APPARENT...THAT "ANYONE" ESPECIALLY "TODAY"....WHO SEES THESE BROTHERS FOR THE "FIRST TIME" IMMEDIATELY CONCLUDES.... THAT THEY "ARE," AND "WERE" BETTER THAN PRACTICALLY "ANY OTHER DANCERS" OF THEIR DAY...ESPECIALLY AS A "TEAM"...THATS WHY, THEY ARE LEFT WONDERING....WHY WEREN'T THEY BETTER KNOWN? THEY WERE DOING THINGS "MORE THAN 60 YEARS AGO" THAT WE STILL DON'T SEE TAP DANCERS OF TODAY "NOT DOING" AND, CANT DO AND, BETTER NOT EVEN TRY TO DO!! IM TELLIN YOU, ITS "ABSOLUTELY CRIMINAL" THAT THEY WERE "NOT" BETTER KNOWN!!
Got to add that one book incorrectly said the Brothers ended this number by jumping through the windows of a moving train. Harold and Fayard were so marvelous that you can practically see them doing it, even if the train wasn't actually moving.
Just think, Fred and Ginger could have been African American if racism wasn’t so rife back then. I can never understand racism. If you are a human being that’s all it should matter. Maybe some some white folk were scared that a person that was anything but white might be brighter and more talented then themselves.
Tiny in statue (smaller than even Sammy Davis). Both of them were easy on the eyes and "non threatening", with clearly feminine mannerisms. However, there we're lots more gifted black dancers in the 30's besides them.
They went beyond dancers. At this point they were pioneering stuntsmen.
And great singers too
These brothers were badd to the bone. The greatest to ever wear a pair of tap shoes. They made those shoes sing.
wot a nifty description. "made the shoes sing" !!!! I named my cat Nicholas after these sparkly amazing gentlemen
That’s a limiting comment because quite frankly their overall dancing I think it’s the greatest of all time they had everything in there dancing poise posture expression interpretation acrobatics they could do it all they look classy as hell when they dance they could’ve them ballet if they wanted to do it and they would’ve excelled at that to me they’re the greatest of all time they just happen to have tap shoes on their feet
they were NOT "boys"

This type of dancing (entertainment) never grows old , the Nicholas brothers 💃💃had it all sophistication, grace & soul 😘 💕
Also they are self taught...Fayard taught himself to sing and dance then he taught his siblings.
Both Harold and Fayard are exemplary dancers, but I see something a little more pizzazz in Fayard's performances.
Gene Kelly was a great dancer but seeing him with the Nicholas Brothers there was no way he could top their level of craftsmanship.
When the subject is tapped in pairs. The Nicholas brothers are simply unbeatable! R.I.P. Fayard and Harold.
Great entertainment!🥰 My grandmother would watch the old movies with Nicholas Bros,Dorothy Dandridge, and Harry Belafonte. Great memories!
Rubens Liz Dos Santos Fayard.
Nobody today can do this.
His name is Fayard not Faynord 😊
@@gasaholic47 Thanks my pal. Hugs from Brazil.
After all these years, and after having seen every frame of anything they did, I could STILL watch The Nicholas Brothers for hours at a time!
Me too. Their posture, the arm moves, the precision dancing, the smiles, the athleticism, the endurance, and I have read that they could do most of their performances in one take.
How they constantly stayed in sync is simply mind blowing.
Never once out of sequence 😲😳.
The Nicholas Brothers were on another level talent wise.
The more I see of the Nicholas brothers the more you want... Complete admiration for two genuinely talented performers... It leaves you breathless
First time seeing this and I thought I've seen 'em all! Phenomenal dancers!
Insofar as i can tell,

They were so amazing as dancers ,they commanded every dance with ease and grace, these are the kings of Dance
They were perfection!
These brothers were a dancing high wire act and explosive
I once saw the younger Nicholas bro in person once--Harold--at Roseland in NYC, where he was attending the 85th birthday party of another dancing great, the lindy hopper Frank Manning!
Stunning ! ❤❤❤
The best dancers ever ! ❤❤❤
They had it all ! ❤❤❤
PERFECTION ! ❤❤❤
CLASS ! ❤❤❤
The Nicholas Brother choreographed a lot of dance moves that singers of 60 and 70's were doing. Harold later on was in movie the Five Heart Beats. Rest In Peace Harold and Fayard Nicholas.
As youngsters in vaudeville, they'd be billed as the TOP act of the show--and would continually get standing ovations!
Outrageous talent!
As much as I love Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly, I truly think these brothers are superior technically. They defy gravity. Had they been white, they would’ve shone brighter in Hollywood as stars.
Absolutely... they danced rings around Kelly and Astaire.. how absolutely horrible they were not given more accolades.. they were amazing.
@@ByWayOfCt Indeed !!! Stunning dancers !!! No one will ever come close to those two incredible brothers ! Perfection and class !!! ❤❤❤
Never seen this and been a fan since I was a kid. Thanks for posting.
These cats were amazing.
My favorite performance was in Stormy Weather with Cab Calloway's band. They did that in one take. I can't even imagine.
I've been a fan for a long time but this video is new to me; thanks for posting this!
Twenty toes, two sets of feet equal pure = TAP-ARTISTRY. This is what you call singing with your feet.👣👣👣
So great! Not a Nicholas Brothers clip that I've seen too often, so thanks for posting it.
Mind officially blown. And they did it all with style, grace, athleticism, in perfect sync with each other & smiling the entire time. Phenomenal.
I like how people are just standing around like it's normal for train baggage handlers to be world class dancers.
Art apprehenders' willing "suspension of disbelief."
All I can say is Wow
Makes Fred Astaire look like rather foolish. Great tap dancing.
Not at all. Different styles. Fred could tap and do ballroom with a female dancer. The brothers always danced together.
I agree. Astaire was good but not jaw dropping or anything to lose your decorum over. I personally felt Gene Kelly was better and most certainly Bob Fosse. Incredibile ,sembra che hanno una molla nelle gambe, mai visto ballerini cosi bravi, eccezionale🌍💙
THE BEST EVER!!!!!
It is sooooo time for their story to be told on the big screen. Only who could possibly be cast to perform like that???
No one. Gregory Hines said people would say he and his brother would be the next Nicholas bros., until he saw them. When he did he realized nobody would be the next Nicholas bros. There is a really good vid up here of him dissecting and commenting on the Stormy Weather routine. Really good.
A filmmaker might just use vintage footage of the real Nicholas Brothers for the many dance sequences.
Logically it would have been Gregory and Maurice Hines, but alas...RIP Gregory. 💔
A real class dance act and not ONCE did either one grab his crotch !! Take THAT, Michael Jackson
I never understood why MJ did that.
Of course someone like you had to bring up MJ. Why do people do that? Such a horrible comment
@@Pashasmom1 cause he could
INCREDIBLE
This is what I do waiting for the train.......
Those boys could certainly fit a lot in to a routine in 2 min!!!😱👍🏻😎
The Jackie Changs of dancing!!
Awesome, talented, mesmerizing, incredible. In awe. ❤❤
the best ever
Tap dancing is truly a lost art
Simply AMAZING 🤩
Out of this world, the greatest ever ❤
this is ridiculous.. my mind is blown
They had a dance-off with The Berry Brothers in 1938...I can only imagine what that was like!!!
And the Nicholas brothers won. Don't care what anyone say
wow...i have to find this on youtube...never on TV...shame shame shame.
Somebody Please! This is too Awesome @
"Yeah, they're swell."
At first when I started watching this video, I thought it had been sped up somehow. The precision they had was crazy good.
In my book they and Bill Robinson were the best…technique, precision, grace, amazing.
Best dancers EVER!
Greatest dancers in the world
THEY ARE THE BEST!!!😎✌
Why aren't these guys as well known as Fred Astaire or Gene Kelly?
YOU KNOW WHY!!🤨😡🤨😡🤨😡
One guess...
You seriously needed to ask that?

Does anyone know the song?
It's a shame these guys never starred in their own movies. What we were all deprived of because of narrow-mindedness.
The best tap dancers EVER, but when you're black no recognition 🙄
All that an just for those body r ok!!
Gene Kelly was the only white boy who came close to the physicality of the Nicholas brothers but even he was only second best.
Not even close
Harold always kept his eye on his little brother
Fayard is the older brother.
