How hard would that Roller Skating tap dance have been, not only to learn, but on the leg muscles? They would have been heavier than normal shoes. Love the old Hollywood musicals - I could watch them over and over again. I was raised on these movies as my mother loved them. Never tire of the sheer talent that was back then. Let’s not forget to mention how freaking adorable he was! His eyes smiled! Oh how I loved his dancing ... he was the “every man” dancer compared to Astaire and I preferred to watch Gene just for his sheer athleticism and that face!!!
It's an interesting comparison, but of course, Kelly wins hands down, not taking anything away from Mr. O'Connor.(Who was a chain smoker, so you have to admire his stamina.) It's similar to comparing Gene to Fred. Fred was lighter on his feet being slight of build, as was Donald compared to Gene, but what Kelly had over both of them was the muscularity, especially in his legs, perhaps with credit to his early days in sports like baseball and especially hockey. That's why Kelly was known as the "working man's dancer" or, "man's man dancer". Fred was elegant and debonair, Donald was cute and light and fleet of foot, but Gene was handsome, solid, muscular, and talented in every aspect of dancing, merely lacking in ballroom. But, who would want to try to match Fred on that one?
The more I see of Donald O'Connor, I think he was almost if not just as good as Gene Kelly. Now that's saying a lot, because I've always considered Gene to be the VERY best !
It would be impossible to aptly describe the talent of Gene Kelly. There are no words adequate enough. Thanks for this incredible set of video clips. Made my day!
Gene was the best. Utter perfection. He made it look effortless....by practicing until his feet bled. And ridiculously good looking. There will never be anyone that comes close because he was the best of his era and that era has gone.

Gene Kelly is by far my favorite dancer. His moves are so clean, precise and athletic. I always like watching his movies and just being mesmerized by his dancing. It like watching a drum line drummer.
Gene just didn't dance around...he danced all OVER the place! It's fun just watching where he goes and how he incorporates the everyday objects into his routine.
We were so lucky to have had so many great dancers ❤ male and female. But Gene Kelly was always one of my favorites. Very Manley. He could sing, act do it all.
The thing that always amazes me about Gene Kelly is just HOW MANY other great people there were to perform along side of him. It's hard to imagine the gigantic piles of talent they had to pull from.
Cyd Charisse was often asked who she liked better, Kelly or Astaire but she would never answer directly. She had too much class for that. But I had the feeling she preferred dancing with Kelly. She stated once that when he caught you , You were caught - making a refference to his strength and agility. But the Central Park scene from Dancing in the Dark with Astaire and Cyd has always been my favourite.
It's beautiful but my favorite are the two ballets Gene does with Cyd in Brigadoon, especially the second one ending in one of the most passionate kisses you'll ever see. Gene always brought the heat.
When Gene Kelly did the famous dance in the movie "Dancing in the rain" he was sick with the flu and had rain pouring down on him in the studio. Even sick he was the best!
Gene Kelly was so very talented....and a fabulous choreographer! Hello Dolly with Barbra Striesand is one of my very favorites....and Gene did the choreography on most of that MOvie! What a talent!!!!!! He was a classy man!
Awesome dancer...and it seemed like he always enjoyed himself while dancing...that wonderful smile and his expression in the singing in the rain routine exemplifies that pleasure in his dance!
He always felt more "working man" vibe, athletic and smiling in slacks and a sweater, showing off the moves and built like a football player, where most others like Astaire were sort of serious and elegant with the tux and evening gowns dancing in ballrooms while Gene danced literally anywhere, even with a mouse! Not sure my explanation makes sense to anyone but me..hahaha
That is exactly what Gene wanted to achieve he wanted to be the "man off the street" that dances & yet he could also show tremendous elegance like in American In Paris!
it was like he was living with us. his dancing acting and the smiles plus the camera sound lighting choreographing, none could be any better. heaven on earth!

Gene Kelly & Fred Astaire were two of the greatest EVER!! They had different styles. Gene was more athletic and Fred was more elegant! Fred made about eight (8) great women dancers famous as his dance partners! Both were fantastic! I'm also leaving out other great dancers such as Donald O'Conner.
It was Gene who made Leslie Caron famous in her first film, "An American In Paris." He also elevated Cyd Charisse to A list stardom when he choreographed and danced the sexy, Vamp number with her in "Singin In The Rain." Of course, that same movie made Debbie Reynolds a star. Vera-Ellen said that working with Gene to his choreography of "Slaughter On Tenth Avenue," changed the trajectory of her career and lander her a long term MGM contract.
The world will never have another Gene Kelly. Talent, style, grace, and humor all made it into his dance routines. And he had more talent in the tip of his little finger than most people ever had or ever will. Thanks, Gene, for making me smile, laugh, and filling me with childlike awe!

When I first went to Hollywood to work in the film industry in the 1970's, I went to what were called "Revival" theaters, like the NuArt on Santa Monica Blvd and others scattered around LA. I met an old foley artist there who explained to me that "all those taps you're hearing... aren't from the dancer. They're from me." In other words, the "taps" were added to the soundtrack, often to enhance a dancer's abilities. So all of those syncopated taps you hear are from a foley artist in sound room watching the film and matching their taps to the dancer's feet. True.
I just watched a recent documentary (Merely Marvelous: The Dancing Genius of Gwen Verdon) where Gwen tells Dick Cavett that she provided the final tap sounds for the "Singing in the Rain" dance number. She had to dance in pans of water to get the right sounds. I have no reason to not believe her, but I prefer to think that Gene did it all himself, or at least dubbed himself.
I could watch Gene Kelly for hours, even when he wasn't dancing. He just exudes charisma. If he was a perfectionist,he succeeded in offering movie goers just that.I love him.Actually,he was my first " crush."
I had a crush on Gene Kelly since I was a kid. I come from a family of vaudeville dancers and my dad was a great dancer so we watched all these movies over and over on TV since I was a kid. Loved Gener the best so handsome too.

@@susanlloyd7395 So why did she recount this in the aforementioned interview? And you know this… how?
Wow! This was great to watch during the pandemic. Thank you for putting this together. Was so impressed with his ability to dance on roller skates!
Back then your shoes were strapped onto a plate that had wheels on them... nothing like today's roller skates. It's amazing he was able to do that.
Be was amazing!!
I could watch Gene Kelly for hours, even when he wasn't dancing. He just exudes charisma. If he was a perfectionist,he succeeded in offering movie goers just that.I love him.Actually,he was my first " crush."
Thank you Mr Gene KELLY. I tried tap dancing in the 80's in Paris Ecole de Danse du Marais and enjoyed it for several years! We will never forget you
An incredible dancer--muscular and graceful simultaneously!
Back when you had to have some sort of genuine talent to be in Hollywood. And you had to be extremely multitalented to really be a Hollywood star.
Bingo.
Not always. There were plenty who had little to no talent but looked good.
@@pobstrel And were they the true stars? Mostly not. Perhaps I'm biased by only watching the good surviving work. :)
I had a crush on Gene Kelly since I was a kid. I come from a family of vaudeville dancers and my dad was a great dancer so we watched all these movies over and over on TV since I was a kid. Loved Gener the best so handsome too.
He always looked like he was enjoying himself - what a beautiful dancer, and a beautiful man! Fred was elegant. Gene was sexy.
He's my favorite. He's graceful yet still manages to be masculine when he dances.
Gene Kelly chanched my life when I first time see him in television. I was eight years old. I'm still surbised how talent he was....
I do Love watching theses Videos ♥️❤️♥️😘
Kelly has a half dozen go-to moves that he uses over & over & over & over & over again. He does them well. And that’s that.
Those windmill turns! Wow! He makes them look so easy and they really are so difficult
I loved him as a young thing and I still love him. God rest ye Gene
Love Gene Kelly ...Great Tap Dancing. One of the Very Best!!!!!
The routine on roller skates threw me! I roller skate regularly and seeing his skating combined with flawless dancing blew my mind. 😮
I totally love this clip. Stunning! Damn, wish I could dance, I mean really dance.
