He died at 71 in 1949. This movie was released in 1943. Probably recorded a year or two before release....conservatively this man was in his early mid 60’s....holy shit! Stay active people
Anybody remember when CGA used to point out the guy on the far left at 2:00 too? I think he compared him to flava flav a few times. Man I wouldn't even have found any humor in this if it wasn't for CGA.
The guy with the washboard is Alvis ( Al ) Cowans. The name of the band is called The Tramp Band. Al was friends with all the greats in the day, respected. One hell of a Drummer, moved Montreal where he spent the rest of his life
These were real men who faced real oppression worked for little but laid the ground work for later generations to overcome and to build on their accomplishments. Rather than denigrate them for having been exploited, we should honor them for influencing the culture for better despite the pain.
Shirley Temple was great but in no way could she keep up with Bill Robinson. Bill chorographed his dance numbers with Shirley to be as easy as possible so tha she COULD keep up. Do your research.
That song wasnt about this mr bojangles. It was a song cover of jerry jeff walkers song, which in his autobiography he stated it was a different man, he met in jail, who was white
these guys are incredible I love the energy of this music does anyone know what it would be classed as? I also really appreciate the talent of using the sand to make rhythms .
Scat, Dixieland Jazz, Minstrel R&B. The Mills Brothers, and others, were using voice, to recreate instrument sounds. It's just so much more convenient, not to have to lug a big bass, drums, and all of that equipment around. These guys obviously carry instruments, but for those times when you're in the zone, and can't reach the one you need, just modulate those vocals, bend notes around, until the emulation is sufficient. Exploring what your voice can do, is like treasure hunting. When you're given next to nothing, you'd be surprised, and intimately know, that necessity is the mother of invention.
Something about this short video I just love. Black entertainment in the days and Mr. Bojangles tap dancing. Great man when I saw his biography. So I love the song " Mr. Bojangles "

Terrific. You feel like you have a front-row seat to the kind of nutty freedom -- as well as the pure talent -- that was vaudeville.
