Custom Steering and Track Bar Layout - [Project SuperDUkota - Dakota+Super Duty axles] Part 6

  • Progress is being made on this solid axle swap! If you are new to this project, I'm putting Ford Super Duty Dana 60 and Sterling 10.5 axles and 40's in to a 2002 Dodge Dakota 4x4 with the 5.9L Magnum V8.
    In this video we choose and mount a power steering box, then lay out our drag link, followed by our track bar and track bar mounts! We then finish it off by doing our first flex check of the suspension to see how everything looks.
    If you're building your own steering and track bar the most important thing to shoot for is a drag link and track bar that are parallel and equal length when the steering is at neutral! To clarify, the bars themselves don't need to be parallel, just the mounting points. If you draw a straight line from the drag link tie rod end pivot point at the pitman arm to the drag link tie rod end at the axle (in my case, the steering knuckle,) it should be the parallel and equal to the line drawn from the frame-side track bar mount hole to the axle-side track bar mount hole.
    Properly setting up this drag link/track bar relationship prevents the steering from being pushed around by the track bar when the suspension compresses while driving down the road. This is how you prevent bumpsteer and death wobble and is critical when making a custom front suspension. If this explanation and the video don't fully clarify this concept, I will be releasing another video that takes a deeper dive in to this concept, as well as how it's affected by different steering boxes and steering styles.

    Thanks for the video, I am planning on a SAS swap on my '08 1/2 ton GMC with the same axles and didn't know what steering box to use. We got to find you some more time away from the family to finish the Dakota lol. keep up the great work.

      Nice! This steering box is great especially since the super duty front has a lot of available steering travel. A lot of steering boxes don't have enough throw to turn these axles fully lock to lock. I believe 2012+ is best for used boxes- 2011 and older wear out prematurely and have smaller sector shafts if I remember correctly. Only challenge is that these boxes use a weird input shaft style so make sure you track down the steering shaft for the box too! It'll save you a huge headache. Good luck on the build! I'm getting this one close to driving again- big thing is I need an editor to make the videos and get them out quicker! I'm way behind with them because I'm a slow editor haha. Thanks for watching!

    Why not just run a longer piece of tube for the top mounting bolt on the steering box mount?
    Thanks for the videos you put out, I always look forward to watching them.

      @WebWheeler  3 роки тому

      These were the longest bolts I could get locally at the time so I figured I'd make them work haha. You're right that it would have been easier to plan ahead and order a longer one but I'm not that smart 😜Thanks for watching! Really appreciate it 👍

    Just found your video i have a 96 i am bout to do but i wanna use leaf springs. This is great info thanks

    • @WebWheeler
      @WebWheeler  3 роки тому +1

      Nice! Yeah leaf springs make it a much quicker and simpler project haha. The Dakota/Durango rear leafs are actually a great option for the front SAS- they have a big center pin offset so you could have the front axle pretty close to the front of the frame and keep a good approach angle. Plus having the same leaf springs at all 4 corners is handy. Good luck! 👍

    • @WebWheeler

      Yeah there's barely any aftermarket support for the second gen even so you're really SOL with the first gen haha. No problem! If you need any more of my opinions feel free to comment on my videos or on my Instagram @webwheeler 👍

    Looking at doing the same swap to my 95 dakota so she can handle torque of the 383 big block I plan on adding. I don't plan to widen the stance though. How much work/money do you think would be involved in narrowing the superduty rear end?

    • @WebWheeler
      @WebWheeler  3 роки тому

      Narrowing the rear would be pretty simple- usually people just cut the axle tube and sleeve the ID with some tubing then weld it all back together. As far as the shafts go you could go to the junkyard and pull some short-side shafts and use those on both sides. Different years and models had different lengths so you should be able to give a set that works. Simpler solution would be to just buy aftermarket shafts that are cut to length or custom length. Little more money but definitely easier. Good luck!

    • @timbrwolf1121
      @timbrwolf1121 3 роки тому

      @@WebWheeler going the money route. Moser can make one for my build that has everything welded, cut, and in place for my dakota.

    Is your front daba 60 shortened? Or you just going to have extra wide axles under a midsized truck? I ask as I have a Dakota and was thinking about an axle swap…

    • @WebWheeler
      @WebWheeler  5 місяців тому

      I kept it full width so I wouldn't have any issue with replacing shafts plus I prefer the stability. With 9" wide, 5.5" backspace wheels, I have about 4" of tire stick out past the fender on each side. Hope that helps!

    Why dont you notch the frame with pipe so you can keep the links straight

    • @WebWheeler
      @WebWheeler  3 роки тому

      I actually did try that. Not sure if I got it on film but without the bends in the drag link bringing the joints to neutral at ride height, my drag link tie rod ends would bind and limit the axle articulation
