- The Friesian heifer calves are well on the road to recovery from scour and the last 10 calves of the year arrive. They're Angus bulls and I'm delighted with them.
And with some animals arriving, some more have left. I sold 6 bullocks and a heifer at the mart in recent days. Some left a nice profit but 2 of them only left enough for a decent bottle of wine between them.

The Angus calves look like good strong stock. As for the few that only left E7 behind, I always think that's better than giving the knackery truck E60 to lift them dead.

Try putting the calf feeder a little lower on the gate, it helps the calf direct the milk to right stomach.

Kieran nice angus calfs. I find the angus and hereford easiest to put weight on i used to buy a mixture of simmentals montebelard bulls etc and i just found dey werent leaving the profit the angus and bwh bulls were making. Stick to angus and bwh bulls going forward. Love the viedos.

Great calves ,at calves here since 2016 and not buying calves this year costs of meal and powder gone put of hand ,not enough out of the system to justify it
You need your weights up to 550kg + for decent return and depends on marts also, and time of year selling.
If you could buy beef AI bred calves from good strong dairy herd , way to go direct from the farm

Have you ever thought about doing contract rearing for a dairy farmer ? You wouldn’t have to buy calves and you would be payed every month
Yeah, I looked into it. Money coming in every month would make cash flow easier to manage but by my sums there's only around €200/animal profit, with someone looking over your shoulder every week. Many dairy farmers also want you to have no other stock (none of your own) on the farm in case there's a TB outbreak. I wouldn't rule it out but it's not for me at the moment.
@@sullivansfarm you can still send heifers back to dairy farmer for calving even if locked up with tb because of animal welfare as you wouldn't be set up to calve them

Yeah, I used to write for them. From 2015 to 2022. I finished up with them just before Christmas. Not enough hours in the week
If you had the farm making you 20k profit a year along with the job the frm be paying ya 400 euro week

Geeze 7 euros ... could you have just put them in your freezer ..?
We'd never eat that much meat! And don't have a freezer to store it. I asked a local butcher about killing one of the heifers for the freezer but he reckoned you'd be better off selling at the mart and using the money to just buy what you want every week.

Wonder did the 2 herefords eat as much as their comerades. Would an extra dose have helped weight gain.
Try have good ventilation for the calves. Breathing in stale air, or air smelling of poohs etc isn't the best. Multivitamin injection never does harm either! Keep up the good videos!
Hello kieran.that many calves a bag of milk replacer wouldn't last long.would u not buy a few British fresians cows that would rear the calves.they would rear 3 calves each.or do half and half .cows rear half the amount and rear the others on milk replacer.
A neighbour of mine tried calves on bought-in cows a few years back. He said the calves did well, when he eventually got the cow to let them drink, but some of the cows got summer mastitis and then he struggled to put condition on the cows before selling them in the autumn. It's probably a decent system if you had it running right but I'm not set up to try it here. Not yet anyway.
