Getting rid of silage plastic and lessons about manual reseeding

  • Things are tipping along around the place with another few acres of silage cut and the calves and cattle doing well.
I need to get the silage wrap sorted too so I'm hauling it to a local bring-centre. And after sore hands and a sore back, a few obvious things dawn on me about reseeding that reclaimed ground.

My father used to cover seeds 60 years ago with a big Bush tied behind a ferguson 20.

Another option for the plastic, if you put a pallet under it in the same area, you can lift the pallet next year with the bale handler and then through a strap across the top.
Although i think i suggest the ton bag to you earlier in the year. A very simlpe and effective way to keep the plastic tidy.
You could use a Bush harrow to rake in the grass seed. My father god rest him swore by the bush harrow 👌🏼

Best job for the plastic is a tonne bag from meal or nuts. Way handier and less mess. All you have to do then is lift it on to your trailer with your loader and happy days

Contractor gave me a tip one day with bales. Sounds mad but it works. Go along with the grease gun and put 1 pump of grease on all of them. No idea why but it works great until you get them moved.
Another tip.... cut a bug heavy branch or small tree. Tie it on to the tractor and drive around. They used that to spread the dung evenly back in the day or roll it with the wheels of the tractor to ensure good soil contact. You're a martyr for punishment

I put grease on some of the bales but I spread it around the whole top of it. Do you mean just a knob or line of it would work? Thanks

@sullivansfarm yeah exactly. Just the one line. It'd be more of a short term thing than long term. But it's fair handy. You'd have the bales done while he's baling and you'd be fairly guaranteed that they wouldn't be touch the next few days.
