Well Larry...you are not the first to tell me this. A feller just has to be who he is on here. I am an acquired taste like an anchovie or marmite or a really strong brew. Enjoy the hammock quest.
After way too many hours at reading hammockforums and watching your videos, I finally pulled the trigger and bought myself the thunderfly with the spreader bars. Thank you for your excellent videos Shug!
Gonna hike the border route trail for the first time in a couple months, watching all your videos getting ready for it haha. Thanks for all the uploads there all very good quality, appreciate it.
Hey Shug! I just recieved my Warbonnet XLC in ocean blue dreamtex! Ordered over memorial day so saved a few bucks and with that got a matching winter topcover, mountain fly tarp, and 100ft guyline! Just hooked it up here in South Dakota and let me tell you what! I am so happy i found your YT channel!!! You talked me into trying this whole hammock thing out and im so glad i spent the 450 with warbonnet! Great quality product. If they would answer the phone i would tell them too.
I'm glad to see your take on the mini fly. I got mine almost 6 months ago and love it. There are very few videos and reviews on it so far which is disappointing (Tim Watson did a good one, though.) When I can't be on the trail and using my equipment, I like to live vicariously through other UA-camrs. Thanks Shug!
As usual these videos are the most helpful gear overviews out there. Being able to see the two sizes overlapped and get a sense of the pole mods is fantastic. That porch mode with the poles is super slick. Warbonnet should give you commission for the Thunderfly with poles I'm likely to buy!
You're giving me a tarp-buying fever here good sir! I really like my Mamajamba, but that MiniFly seems very handy and fast to pitch! Perfect for a lazy hanger like myself. And those closable ends are awesome when the rain kicks in. Thanks Shug!
Thanks Shug, another great video, this helps with choosing a tarp and how they work, full of info and some giggles and a musical ending to boot, nice eh
As always, well done, Shug. Where those tarp pole kit poles cross the ridge-line, you might want to add a dab of Silicone on the ridge-line. I had an 11 x 9 polyester tarp, and although it did not stretch much when wet, it still adsorbed 16 oz of water. I think Polyester's greatest strength is for those that base camp as they resist sun degradation better than Nylon. Nylon is also more forgiving because it does stretch. Enjoy your new tarp toys.
I have the minifly in the silpoly and Bushwhack camouflage. I replaced a cuben fiber tarp with it for one reason... The end peaks they have on the mini fly. That was a great idea because they help to stop any driving rain from coming in at either end. Also the Warbonnet Blackbird in the 70 D double bottom hammock is idea for buggy areas. I camp in Florida and mosquitoes are a problem most of the time. They will bite threw a single bottom hammock to get to any body part that's touching the material. Camping in the blackbird I have never been bitten.
Awesome video Shug! I’ve been looking for as much comparison info as possible on these two and your’s is the best! Will be purchasing another killer product for Warbonnet soon!
The biggest advantage of the mini fly is good end coverage from a small tarp with only an 11' ridge line. Comes in handy when the available tree options are closer than ideal.
Oooh so nice! I have the WBO Superfly for winter. The silnylon version is a bit tough to stuff (it's really slippery) so I recommend snake skins to remove that hassle. Cheers from Stillwater.
In regards to the use of the "tarp poles", it will be interesting if someone has a different way to attach them. I made two poles for my WB Cloudburst tarp, I use with their bridge hammock. I attached them similar to the way you do and for what it is worth they have stayed put every time. I have had about 10 trips with them so far and even in pretty windy conditions they have "stayed put". Thanks for the preview of the new tarps.
Thanks for the video shug! Im currently working on a MYOG tarp design because I couldnt find anything that was exactly what I wanted, though these were the closest. Definitely getting a look at all the details of them is helping me with my design. great content as always!
Not sure if anyone else has said it below, but I made my own Superfly out of silpoly because I personally prefer the material. It doesn't stretch as bad (if at all) with moisture like silnylon does in my experience. I have the Warbonnet Ground Tarp also made out of silpoly, feels thinner than my 1.1oz silpoly DIY Superfly, but it also could be the feeling that the camo pattern leaves on the material. Considering the Thunderfly for my summer/fall adventures and keep my DIY Superfly for winter and foul weather.
I love warbonnet I have the XLC and the Mamajamba tarp. I'm torn between getting the removable doors for my tarp or just getting the Thunderfly. Nicely done showing the versatility of the tarps. I've been hooked on using the side pullouts on mine.
Exactly the video i needed... Going Hammock camping this weekend with a friend and i never used a tarp before. Q: will i need some kind of under quilt or wool blanket under me with a -20*F sleeping bag, forecast temperatures in the 23*F clear sky? Thank you Sir, you're my savior. Oui oui, Merci!
Thank you so much for all your great information it's because of you that I got a hammock it's not the best one but it's what I could afford and I love it thank you hopefully one day I will have a nice hammock like that

The pole mods are excellent until it gets a little windy then not having the side pullouts tied to trees and such gets a little dicey. I have the superfly in 20D silpoly and really enjoy it. Glad to see some more info on the newer tarps. I think I'd need some Shug level tarp skills to stay dry in that mini fly but I'll just keep practicing for now!

Sorry about the dumb questions here but I've looked and can't find the answers. New to Hammock camping and I've only set up my thunderfly once. Upon setting up my tarp I noticed that it has 4 stainless split rings attached along the tarp ridge-seam. The ring on each end is obviously for a split ridgeline OR for a tato or nama claw connector to make the tarp taught. BUT... It ALSO has two split rings on the underside of the tarp closer to the center. Do you know what these two split rings are for? If I run my continuous ridgeline through all 4 rings, my CRL HAS to but under the tarp. If I want my CRL to run over my tarp, the two middle rings can't be used with the ridgeline. Also, does the ridge-seam of these Tarps need to be seam sealed?
The split rings are for the tarp ridgeline tie outs. Not sure about the inside rings. Mine does not have them. Just onit them for a CRL and use the ends. They say you don't need to seam seal ridgeline but I always do anyways.
@@shugemery Thank you for the reply! I really appreciate the videos you make. So I decided to email Warbonnet directly and ask THEM. Lol. I finally got a response this morning. Apparently the rings I'm referring to are only on the 13' Thunderfly (which I have) and they are for hanging the ridgerunner bug netting from. This seems very convenient but I had dismissed this as a possibility because I figured doing this would end up pulling my tarp down closer to my Hammock. I can't wait to try it out and see. Thank you again for the help!
Hey Shug, thanks for the video. I liked hearing your comments on the spreader poles. Just an idea to try (since you have them and I don't), would a lark's head on the first connection make rigging them a little easier? Less likely to come off while wrestling the other side?
My cuben tarps don't take on water but I am not always crazy about the translucency of cuben material. The silnylon tops I own do absorb water and get heavier in rains. Looking forward to trying this silly to split the difference....especially when backpacking in rain.
shugemery Thank you for your input. I recently purchased my first hammock from Warbonnet and their superfly 30D silnylon. Then hammock was what I expect but the tarp was thinner than what I thought. I’ve learned a lot from you and can’t wait to see more vids... subbed 💪🏼
I purchased the same yellow guy line as the one in the video. When you cut the guy line, you don’t have to burn the ends from keep it from fraying, do you?
Hey Shug, why not tie a little rubber o-ring on the spreader bar ties? You can just slip the o-ring on the bar end and not be concerned with slack or loose knot.
Like Poe mods. I use my full length under the tarp pole mods. Love it for snow nights. But the dual Poe mods are awesome year round. Brandon make Awesome gear! Great video 👍👍
shugemery Yes that’s exactly what I use. I have a dual inside pole mod at each end and can put another in the middle if I needed to. Using the dual poles at each end it makes porch mode a lot easier and lots of room. As always your videos are great! I got a thunder fly and like it better than my hex.
Great video Shug. I have the Superfly. Love it. Thought I was crazy when I first bought it but simply a great tarp. Do you think that spreader bar idea would work on the Superfly tarp? Take care and keep on hanging.
Bit late to the party with this comment! But how did the silpoly turn out in terms of long term durability? And if you could only have a mini fly or a Thunderfly and not both…what would you go for!? Thanks from the UK 🇬🇧
Demo purposes only....in a bit of a hurry for the video. I usually go tip down and do a wrap at top of pole. Always works for me. Just a quickie porch mode.
I have a question on tarp materials. Do you know if the Sil Nylon Tarps are more durable than the Dyneema Cuben Fiber Tarps? Just wondering how "bomb" proof the Dyneema Cuben fiber material is. And which takes less maintenance when it comes to seem sealing and keeping waterproof.
Cuben needs no seam sealing, does nor absorb water, is expensive, is translucent, hard to tear on the pull but easy to poke a hole in. Can be patched with duct tape. Sil nylon is tough. Absorbs water, cheaper, cannot be repaired with duct tape.
Thank you for your reply. I love the education value of your videos as well as the entertainment value. Always keeps me coming back for more. Many thanks!
Proposal Prior my Finally Great guy that Alex: I picked up that used Multicam Blackbird XCL here in early Spring 2022, and it is a beautiful hammock. I do not really like those WB tarp tie outs: I like the quick line tensioners: I am Lazy & Shug might be a bit of a knot man, not to be confused with a knotty man...lol...good work buddy! I have one of those Wilderness Innovations Hammock Ponchos coming from Perry Peacock. He is the classic UA-cam character of the West. I told him about your work. I will keep you posted on that hammock poncho thing. Now & then you have to go onto something different, new challenges...innovate. Awesome work Amigo: all secure here in Sector G. Haha...nice...I never understood those wasps...just glad they are metal...you got lines all over like you are gonna' snag a big fat trout & have an Alaskan-style smoke session. Hmmmnm..Alaaska.. You ever been? Could be an idea for the Ultimate Expedition: get one in before the finally. We have to get you & Perry out there..all the classics...I am the grunt & extra camera man... I thought about that Isle Royal too, or maybe out West somewhere...Great Lakes Region: Porcupine Mountains & Keewenaw has been on my radar a few years, maybe a decade...hmmnn...that would be do-able. I really like the Titanium Wasps. Saves me a few seconds. More time to lollygag. Not sure I'd want to wear my hammock as a poncho....wet hammock. Dealbuster~~!
Shug, but how could those little tiny stakes hold in anything less than solid wood? Those are but wee nails! But very _nice_ nails. Have you got really hard ground?
Got the poles & everything on that one. Warbonnet makes a nice tarp: my Superfly had beautiful stitchwork. Did you deploy any long-term use of either of those? Alot of them there hammockers are using those poles these days: I bet they got many of their ideas from Sector 7.
@@shugemery Admirable: that Black Crow. I always wanted to get better at stitching. After your Green Peapod Hammock I was inspired to try forging my own bug net, but that sucker blew all over the place & I could not handle it.
@@shugemery Did you find much use in those WL shockcord mods in the hammock that pull & form a footbox? (Knotty mods?) Miss em'? I always wanted one & might have Simply Light out there in Montana whip me up a hammock. Jared out there still does some of that old-school Marty stuff.

@@shugemery I appreciate the quick answer!! I have a chance to pick up a very slightly used dyneema for just a little more than the cost of the thunderfly... so that was the reason for the question. If they cost the same... which would you rather? OH and BTW... Love your videos!
whats the difference in length of the beaks on the ends between the minifly and the thunderfly? Mainly curious in the dimension from the ridgeline to the tieout on the beak.
From one frozenbutt hanger to another, been watching you for a while, you sir, age like wine! btw what camera do you use for your videos? And I owe you a great debt of gratitude for getting me into hammock camping! Love being outdoors, have a buggered up back and haven't been able to sleep on the ground for years. justin vandenbroek I have the superfly and absolutely love it. Yes It's heavier than these options, but you have soooooo many ways to use it. All the way closed and down on the ground in the cold wind, to porch mode in mild weather. Simply love it.
I am on the part when you are in NY in your book now. Sounds like quite the trip. You must have taken copious notes to recall all that. Craving NYC pizza now. I also get the letting YT folks gift you as I face the same thing and feel funny about it. But if you are sharing something like you did then I can see doing it. Like people giving a tip. Sometimes after my shows folks come up to tip me and I used to always refuse and they seemed sorta put -off. Now I always take it as it takes a lot for them to come and offer. Whooooooo Buddy)))))
NY pizza is the best! I never planned to write a book but had my YT videos and tons of pics that I used to recall where and when, then a bunch of research for the details. Yeah, accepting “mail magic” was hard at first but like you said, it’s good for everyone involved - plus it helps viewers be a part of the adventure. I could never have finished if not for the help. Some of us have remained good friends and it was fun to give back to future hikers when I was able. Shug, you do a lot for the hiking community - in education and entertainment - more than you know.
What comes first - the chicken or the egg? Do you adjust the hammock to the tarp - or the tarp to the hammock? Seems to me a CRL would be easier to center the tarp over the hammock that way. But, hanging as much as you do, you could probably nail it in the dark. Am I right? Huh? Am I right?
I adjust the tarp to hammock mostly. And yes, I have done it quite a bit! My Tarp Tutorials.......ua-cam.com/play/PLahaAdtfX9ZK1k8bDbsr4JzQgQ_iyB2RU.html
I've thought about going hammock, but I will admit I am still intimidated by them for some reason. It's a lot of stuff, plus the underquilt, and I often hear of hammockers getting too cold at night. I just bought a Z Packs Duplex tent, so not in a hurry to spend big on a hammock. Maybe someday.
Hammocks are only cold if you don't use proper under and top insulation. They are not for everyone but I get 10 to 12 hours sleep in mine. Never got that on the ground.

Hey Bubba....great video...stay warm
I am a bit weary of cold at this time. And shoveling.
Hey Shug, thanks for the video. I liked hearing your comments on the spreader poles. Just an idea to try (since you have them and I don't), would a lark's head on the first connection make rigging them a little easier? Less likely to come off while wrestling the other side?
That is a good idea.
Of all your camping trips, would you prefer to take a heavy tarp material or the material that absorbs less water?
My cuben tarps don't take on water but I am not always crazy about the translucency of cuben material.
The silnylon tops I own do absorb water and get heavier in rains. Looking forward to trying this silly to split the difference....especially when backpacking in rain.
shugemery Thank you for your input. I recently purchased my first hammock from Warbonnet and their superfly 30D silnylon. Then hammock was what I expect but the tarp was thinner than what I thought. I’ve learned a lot from you and can’t wait to see more vids... subbed 💪🏼
My Superfly is 30D....really tough. It'll go you good.
I purchased the same yellow guy line as the one in the video. When you cut the guy line, you don’t have to burn the ends from keep it from fraying, do you?
I do burn the ends.
Hey Shug, what’s your opinion on using small Amsteel for tarp tie outs? I’m contemplating 1/16” UCRs or whoopie slings. Whatcha think?
They can be hard to loosen up if too tight. A bit overkill in my opinion. I tried a whoopie on a ridgeline once and did not take to it.
Hey Shug, why not tie a little rubber o-ring on the spreader bar ties? You can just slip the o-ring on the bar end and not be concerned with slack or loose knot.
May try that! Great idea.
nice compromise to the full door and flat tarp. Shock cord, on my list to get. might save me from rips.
My thoughts too.
Like Poe mods. I use my full length under the tarp pole mods. Love it for snow nights. But the dual Poe mods are awesome year round. Brandon make Awesome gear! Great video 👍👍
I prefer an inner pole mod for heavy snows...seems to shed better and not hold snow.....ua-cam.com/video/xGJxi5j6rGU/v-deo.html
shugemery
Yes that’s exactly what I use.
I've done it. Yes.
Bit late to the party with this comment! But how did the silpoly turn out in terms of long term durability?
And if you could only have a mini fly or a Thunderfly and not both…what would you go for!?
Thanks from the UK 🇬🇧
Silypoly still kicking. Holding well. I prefer the MiniFly but that is just me.
Very nice.
You might want to try a girth hitch for the poles.
Demo purposes only....in a bit of a hurry for the video. I usually go tip down and do a wrap at top of pole. Always works for me. Just a quickie porch mode.
Think you could use your trekking poles in stead of the tarp spreader poles or would they be too heavy on top of the tarp?
Some folks do....I have not though.
Proposal Prior my Finally
Great guy that Alex: I picked up that used Multicam Blackbird XCL here in early Spring 2022, and it is a beautiful hammock.
Over & Out!
Happy Trails & Trials!
Frozen ground!
2 years later and still finding these! Thanks for the great video
I did have a question, we’re these both silpoly? Also what colors were they?
Minifly is silnylon and Evergreen color. Thunderfly is silpoly and Olive Brown.
Would you recomend a thunder fly/mini fly or a tarp without doors such as the cloudburst
It depends on the trip, weather and such. I like doors for hard rain and wind. Especially wind. But fair weather I like Minifly or the likes.
Hey Shug, what length of line are you running from the beaks to the ground?
I usually just use whatever leftover line from my main tie outs fro ridgeline to secure the beaks.
Great information.
Thanks for the video
Yessir....👍
Hey Shug. The stakes were .55 ounces (point 55) which is about 16 grams. One pound = 454 grams = 16 ounces. All secure in sector 8 !!
Yes...I know. I erred.
Woah! Shug, am I slow on the uptake or did you get a new camera? Looks great! As usual, thanks for the shake down on the new gear and great insight.
Been using it about a year but switched settings. A sony DSC HX-80. Thankee.
Got the poles & everything on that one. Warbonnet makes a nice tarp: my Superfly had beautiful stitchwork.
Did you deploy any long-term use of either of those?
Alot of them there hammockers are using those poles these days: I bet they got many of their ideas from Sector 7.
I use the Mini-Fly a good bit. End up using my DIY Blackcrow tarp more though just cause I made it. About the same size. Rarely ever use those poles.
@@livinlarge1247 They are nice to sorta create a footbox or reduce floppy sides.
Is it necessary to get a custom 13ft thunderfly for the ridge runner hammock or does the normal 11ft thunderfly tarp cover sufficiently. Cheers
I showed the RR fit at 5:17 in this video. Seems like it works but 13 will get you more of course.
What trekking pole length would you suggest putting the mini fly in porch mode?
most trekking poles are adjustable in length so use the length that seems appropriate at the time. Or even a stick in the woods works....ua-cam.com/video/4GQPY5BuyPI/v-deo.html
If you had a choice would you go with a thunderfly or a dyneema tarp with doors?
Dyneema is very expensive so if saving a few ounces is important then maybe that would suit you. I like my Thunderfly. I got silpoly.
@@shugemery I appreciate the quick answer!! I have a chance to pick up a very slightly used dyneema for just a little more than the cost of the thunderfly... so that was the reason for the question. If they cost the same... which would you rather?
OH and BTW... Love your videos!
It is really what YOU prefer. I am not always crazy about the translucency of dyneema.
whats the difference in length of the beaks on the ends between the minifly and the thunderfly? Mainly curious in the dimension from the ridgeline to the tieout on the beak.
I never measured them. Maybe ask Warbonnet.
All I have is this close up...flic.kr/p/2cG2y8K
I assume 7" difference like on the sides.
"It's how you pitch it!" T-shirt concept?
Same goes for cow patties!
lol
or as Shug/Karl "I'm pitchin' a tarp, mm hmm"
From one frozenbutt hanger to another, been watching you for a while, you sir, age like wine! btw what camera do you use for your videos? And I owe you a great debt of gratitude for getting me into hammock camping! Love being outdoors, have a buggered up back and haven't been able to sleep on the ground for years. Feels good to be up in the air =)
It is a Sony DSC HX-80 camera.
Carry forth.
thank you much Sir!
I think them spreader bars are badd a** I'm gonna get me some eventually but I'm wondering how good they'll do on a windy day
Real windy it is sometimes better to secure with line ties out to a tree.
Shug for you think the thunderfly is a better three season option than the superfly? I was going to buy it for all around use but now I'm thinking it may be overkill. Thanks in sdvance
justin vandenbroek I have the superfly and absolutely love it. Yes It's heavier than these options, but you have soooooo many ways to use it. All the way closed and down on the ground in the cold wind, to porch mode in mild weather. Simply love it.
I haven't seen the wasp before. Do you show 'em off in other vids? Look pretty handy. Thanks for another goodun!
Yes...in my Tarp Tutorial series.
I use the sil-poly winter dream fro UGQ. super good tarp.
👍
Shug! Had a question about your tarp preference.
silnylon or silpoly? Gimme your wisdom please!
I have both. Like both. Depends on the tarp I'm toting. The silpoly seems to soak up less water in rain.
Are you using a new camera, Shug? Videos are much more clear. Thanks for the vids.
Had it about a year....just trying new settings. Think I found it!
Also have you ever used a External frame backpack?
Used to but switched to external frame years ago.
Great video Shug! Cool tarps and really digging those beak flaps. I spy a sticker! (Thanks!)
Nice video.
👍
If you were to choose one only that you would embrace fo three season hangs, which one wins?
The MiniFly. Simple.
I have a feeling you live around lake nokomis MN Because of all those air planes
Not really.
How cold in Minnesota today Shug? Just wondering.
10º
Wow. Thanks for sharing my friend. Wow...
Shug - you do not run a continuous ridge line on the Thunderfly?
I prefer two lines...one off of each end of the tarp ridgeline.
What tarp would you take for an AT thru hike?
I would want one with door flaps for sure.
Awesome vid my man Awesome vid
👍
I've thought about going hammock, but I will admit I am still intimidated by them for some reason. It's a lot of stuff, plus the underquilt, and I often hear of hammockers getting too cold at night. I just bought a Z Packs Duplex tent, so not in a hurry to spend big on a hammock. Maybe someday.
Hammocks are only cold if you don't use proper under and top insulation.
They are not for everyone but I get 10 to 12 hours sleep in mine. Never got that on the ground.
Have a War Bonnet tarp and hammock....love! They should pay you for your great reviews! How is Maple King?
Well....i get to keep the gear! Maple King is 1500 miles from me. We texted today. He is syrupy....
Good to hear!
Do you have a video about hiking boots?
Mainly winter boots.....ua-cam.com/video/Yzr2J0G9vYU/v-deo.html
Is that a sliding cover on your garage/shop?
Yes it is.
