    Disabled to discourage the Shug haters... how many could there be??? You were the reason I now sit in the woods for hours at a time. You showed me how. I think anyone who watches your vids find then informative and very entertaining. I for one appreciate the effort that goes into making these and the dedication to share your enjoyment most don't have.

    Shug, I just want to say thank you for all of the time and effort that you put into these videos. After 30 years of sleeping..., or rather..., not sleeping, on the ground, and after trying countless pads. mats and pillows, I'm going to try hammock camping. I discovered your videos and they have been helpful and entertaining. Thank you.

    I worked at a bait and tackle shop as a teen and one of my duties was boiling peanuts out behind the store. We had a couple of big propane turkey fryers. Boil 'em until they were soft, turn off the heat, stir in a bunch of salt, and let them soak a while. Then you bag them suckers up and watch them fly off the counter!!! Woooooo!

    Hey Shug! Or anyone listening. You can get the EXACT performance, consistency, etc for guy lines using 275 mini tactical paracord at a fraction of the cost! I prefer the Trucker's Hitch for ridge lines and clothes lines. It implements simple pulley physics to very quickly achieve a taught line. Easy to adjust and take down, and very strong.
    The strong, thin, abrasive tent guy line cords should not be wrapped or go around trees. It's tough and painful to the trees. These cords are designed to go from tent/tarp, out to stakes.

    • @shugemery
      @shugemery  10 років тому

      Truckers is a terrific knot and I am showing that on the next installment.
      Personally I find clothesline heavy and it absorbs water. That tree i tied around with the thinner line has had my tarps on it hundreds of times and seems no worse than the other trees in my yard. On the trail the tree I hang on more than likely sees very little use backpacking. Though all bark is not created equally. I do know some that use a 1 inch tree strap for their tarps.
      A lot of this thinner line is used by arborists. I appreciate your opinion.
      I think woodpecker are worse on trees.

    • @fcernst
      @fcernst 10 років тому

      ***** No, I'm not recommending using clothesline... Use these cords for clothes line if you like, they are just not designed to go around trees. You can use a small piece of climber's webbing to go around the tree to protect it, and then tie your Kelty Triptease for example to that. For a typical tarp loading, you also could use, say a section of 1/2" white nylon soft rope to go around the tree, and tie your thin cord to that. The 1/2" soft rope would effectively flatten some, and distribute this range of tarp load bearing pressures comfortably to the trees.
      I enjoy your videos, the humor and seeing your adventures.

    Brilliant, as usual. I laughed when you said about learning from your own mistakes. Everybody says "you don't need toggles for marlin spike hitch, just find little stick". Usually it works but today I've landed twice on my bottox because makeshift toggles were to soft. :-)

    Great vid Shug as always. your Hammock trip videos have inspired me to give it a try. Im an experienced backpacker but always a ground tent sleeper. I've never tried a hammock because im very much a side sleeper and thought i couldn't sleep on my side in one. I have just bought my first Hammock and going out to use it on an overnighter this Friday. I guess your supposed to sleep at an angle to lay kinda flat. Wish me luck. Thanx again.

    Another way to tension your line(without a tensioner) is to connect the line to the tarp with a prusik (my favourite knot), that way if it ever needs to be tensioned and you don't want to get up, you can just pull on the prusik until it's tight again.

    • @shugemery
      @shugemery  10 років тому

      I like these tensioners because I have to do nothing...nothing at all. More time to sit and stare.

    • @coast2coast00

      I agree that tensioners are better, but I gotta find a way to make the prusik work for every job!

    Thanks for the camp-related vid, Shug! I was startin' to go through withdraws. Just bit the bullet and picked me up a HG Cuben Fiber tarp just in time for a backpacking trip through Joshua Tree National Forrest (got a nice hang between a couple boulders). But wouldn't ya know it; the weather was so nice, I didn't get to use it. Actually kinda bummed about that. Enjoy your trip to the undisclosed location!

    Ya man tarpology! Loving it, can't wait until Part 2. Just a beginner hanger myself, and big questions after a few trips are: ridge line over vs under, vs none; associated drip issues especially with tarp ridge under, etc?. I always wondered with ridge line under, if the rubbing on delicate silnylon or cuben will abrade the coating and cause it to leak? Oh the questions! :o)

    • @shugemery
      @shugemery  10 років тому

      I am an off the ends type. Under the tarp can cause drips depending on the angle, type of cord etc. I can happen. Never had a rubbing problem. Sil is pretty tough.

      You know what they call a hammock in our neck of the woods Hoop? A black bear enchilada lol. I like a full Blackbird Warbonnet Supertarp in such circumstances, feel a touch more secure :) I'm a ridge line underling myself, love the clothesline but must admit haven't run into how well it will perform in prolonged rain conditions. Did perfectly well in the thunderstorm in the wee hours last September anyway. From the looks of it I'll have my opportunity this summer. Would recommend extra tie downs and stakes for the mosquitoes this summer, they're epic!?

    • @shugemery

      +Nathan Jennings Could be tight. I ridgeline on the hammock would help. Best to have about at least 6 inches of tarp on each end over the hammock.ua-cam.com/video/xrfBrIEH2-U/v-deo.html
