Most don’t realize that Matt Mitchell is really the driving force behind this band musically. I listened to a long interview from Matt and another with Maynard and they both talked about how Matt will essentially write all these riffs and songs and Dropbox them to Maynard and he’ll kinda pick through and then start working on the ones he “likes” more or less. Matt is the primary guitar player/mad scientist of the group. Very underrated and under recognized in music. Very talented musician and songwriter.

100% agree. Existential Reckoning is such a different trip. I kind of think of as a melding of two very different worlds that collide and spin out this magical sound. Mat Mitchell is definitely a mastermind of sounds and samples. You need to check out the concert they did at Acrosanti. It was the whole Existential Reckoning album played just before sunrise in the Arizona desert. It’s a trip, but it shows you the complexity of the construction of those songs. I think a various points 3 different members of the band are playing with pad samples in addition to their normal instruments. It’s a marvel to behold. But it really showcases Mat’s talent as a mad scientist and it truly shows off the diverse talent of each musician.

The female singer next to Maynard is Carina Round. There's also a second backup vocalist, Mahsa Zargaran, who is contributing some of the really high, floaty parts. Both these vocalists have solo projects, though their solo stuff is very different from what Puscifer puts out. Puscifer is a very eclectic act with their songs all having different styles, and the band lineup changes pretty regularly. The Remedy is one of my favorites of theirs, though it's also one of their most "commercial" or "main-stream" style songs. "Momma Sed" and "Conditions of My Parole" show off some of their range (and humor), though neither of those songs is quite as complex as this one.

Really enjoying your reactions and breakdowns, especially the Tool stuff. Very cool that you're delving into A Perfect Circle and Puscifer as well!
The guitar player, Mat Mitchell, is also the main song writer/producer/engineer/does-about-everything-but-sing-guy, along with Maynard and Carina, he makes up the core of the band. This is Maynard's project though, I believe he brings most of the ideas to Mat and Mat turns the ideas into tracks that Maynard then writes lyrics/melodies for, Carina then comes in with her vocals and stuff to add another layer. Their style/genre/whatever varies a lot from song to song and they play around with many different expressions. Looking forward to hearing you react to some more of their stuff - there's a lot to explore! A few suggestions would be "Horizons", "Polar Bear", "Bullet Train to Iowa" and "Bread and Circus."

I've been a long time Maynard/Tool fan since 1994. However, the two songs that mean the most to me are two of his Puscifer songs. The day I found out we were having twins, I played "Man Overboard" over and over because it was exactly how I was feeling. Then, a few years later, when we found out our fourth kid was going to be a girl (after three boys), Money Shot had just come out and "Agostina" perfectly fit all of my feelings. It's his song about meeting his daughter for the first time.
I'd recommend both songs for your Puscifer journey.

Ooff you have a huge catalog to go through even though you've done some tool already. It's so much fun seeing people fall in love with ll his projects! Puscifer is probably the most eclectic of the three - I think of it as it's really Maynards playground. Carina Round is fantastic and her voice pairs so well.

Love that you are reacting to this track, its probably one of my favorites by them. Something (kinda) hidden that I noticed on my 15th time listening to the song, during the chorus you can hear a ring bell which fits with the lucha theme of the album. Just something I hear now constantly when I listen to the song.

You ain't kidding. I fell in love with Maynard's voice the first time I heard it and it has now been a 30-year love affair. The song Potions is so intensely beautiful it drew my husband from the depths of the house to the living room, demanding to know what song I was playing (he's also an MJK fan) because it was so incredibly beautiful. He made me play it three more times before he left and went back to what he was doing LOL!

My favorite Puscifer song is The Humbling River. The lyrics are some of the best ever written, in my opinion. This is surely a repeat of prior comments but Puscifer's probably got the deepest library of all of MJK's acts. Dig deep and often with this one!
