Dude as you pull something of that breaks or needs replacing
Write it down make a list
You’ll forget what you need to order especially things like the rubber bungs you break and throw away
Pressure wash the floor then you’ll know what floor pans you need
Order parts each week or fortnight make it easier than buying all at once
And keep that chassis on wheels
Don’t turn this into something that gets pushed outside and left to rot more

The guy has the attention span of a spanner. He has alrady mentioned there is another bus coming. Just in time to finish stripping and putting into a pile somewhere. I have noticed since thr beginning that he cannot concentrate on one thing. Even when he was sandblasting the swamp dragon, he would do a patch, then instead of doing another patch next to it, he would do a patch somewhere else.
The Beast will never get done, The VW van is permanantly on hold, the Porche will soon be in pieces, the swamp dragon has been sitting waiting for parts for ages, his other Karman Ghia went to someone else who made a great job of it. That one was in better condition than this one. He wants to restore but cant weld. He started off with hardly any tools and no knowledger of mechanics. He had a lovely Ford pick-up but even sold that. He has a very short concentration span.

Hey CT that Ghia has a split case Transaxle. That's not original for that car, they were made 57' to 1960. Just a friendly heads up before it causes you a headache. A little surface rust is nothing to worry about, replace the floor pans and the other wear items like master cylinder, brake lines and seals etc... If you get good quality floor pans it'll have the seat brackets and you can buy preformed brake line. Go over the other hard areas with a wire wheel or flapper disc and coat with rust encapsulator paint, new pan gasket and put it back together. Leave the the patina it's worth more and leaves the originality.

Years ago, I restored a Malibu that the previous owner had driven for years with a leaking power steering pump. The result was every area on the underside of the car was a combination of PS fluid and road grime. I fashioned a sheet of heavy plastic under the car and shaped a sloped catch basin using heavy bricks and then stacked bricks on top of the foundation bricks to hold the plastic in place. I shaped a reservoir at the end of the plastic to catch the grime. I sprayed the engine compartment and entire underside of the car with a pump sprayer containing a cleaner, let set for an hour or so, occasionally spraying heavier grime areas again, and used a hose and spray head from a faucet and the grime all melted off. The grime was caught in the reservoir that was shaped so that the excess water ran over a small dam, leaving the sediment at the foot of the dam. After I gently drained the water out of the reservoir, I rolled up all the plastic sheet containing the grime and put it in the trash. This method kept the grime off my concrete driveway; I was very pleased with the outcome. Should have at least taken pictures but that was 15 or so years ago and sharing on UA-cam was a new idea.

I though the plan was to get it running and flip it, but now you’ve got the body off and need to do the floor pans then just get it all the chassis done right while you have the access. You’ve done most of this on Rusty already so be methodical, get parts and follow a plan.
Also, get all the body work up to spec and sealed from the inside.. Oil the outside, keeping the patina and you will have a solid restored car with retro styling - will be amazing 👌🏻🇬🇧

Hoi CT! when you have restored and painted the floor panels, do not cover them with the sound-absorbing tar sheets that are the same as the ones you removed: moisture creeps in and the sheet rusts without you noticing it.
Cover the floor panels with sound absorbing material that is not glued so that you can check the state of the panels whenever you want.👍😎

Cut that chassis in half. Don’t mess around, you know you want to. I just saw another VW down in your area on market place. It’s pretty much all there. It just needs you to take it apart. Hey, I like where you put the body. Get that harbor freight tarp out and cover it. That Florida UV will have the tarp gone in no time. Add some extra rope so it will look cool come February. The only reason to keep that sound deadening is to use as a template for cutting the “quick roof” or “peel & Seal” to shape. Those products are virtually identical to DynaMat, just less expensive. I used a different product for headliner padding, but did my entire interior with quick roof. You should keep your carpet pieces, too, for the same reason. Great temples if you want to cut your own cheep indoor/outdoor carpet.

New floor pans could have been done with the body on. Not as easy with the body off but doable. Cleaned the fuel system and a complete brake job and been driving it.

You're going about this right CT. A restoration starts with a tear-down and examination to determine what is needed. Yes those floor pans are toast and need replaced. Don't let the naysayers get to you, just keep plugging along. I'm sure you will finish this one and the result will be awesome. Which will motivate you to finish more and make them awesome as well.

@@joshuapoche5137 Ummm, that was the dragon, not the Ghia, in the first restoration video on the Ghia he said he was going to get this one done first as it is the one he feels he can get finished fastest. Besides, I don't think CT truly thought the dragon was just going to be a simple get it running and road safe once he started getting into it. No older vehicle that has been sitting unmaintained for more than a few years is ever a simple get it running and drive it project, even if you got one from a desert area like where I live in So. Cal. there will still be enough problems with older cars that they typically need a full tear-down to do things like replace all the rubber components (seals, brake lines, fuel lines, body mounts etc.) as they'll be dry-rotted.

If those are “nails” that held the body seal, they have a twist, much like the carpet nails they used. You can’t find replacements for them, (without spending too much time and money), so save those.

  • @Walkercolt1
    @Walkercolt1 3 роки тому

Karman Ghia (as with ANY VW) don't HAVE a chassis. They are the original unibody cars. They are stamped from three sheets of sheet metal welded together. That was Dr. Porche's secret to "Der People's Car" design in 1937 and his modular Boxer flat 4 air-cooled engine, both dirt cheap to produce, and took no fancy factory to build any part of it in. The Ghia designed "sportscar" body was only $450 more expensive than the "Beetle" body and was far more ridged (especially the coupe) for better handling (with better suspension). Ghia wasn't the only sportscar body offered by VW. Pinifarina and Gibli of Italy both made limited production bodies but at MUCH higher prices, and both with greatly modified engines (fuel injected 4 valve per cyl heads). These "baby Porsches" now are auctioned for $50,000+. There's a You Tube of the Pinifarina body-sexy as all heck!

Actually I have faith in the projects completion, but he must slow down with demolition and start to get more methodic. Too many things demolished at once make parts get lost and misplaced, take up a lot of space and cripple the running projects. I tried the many things at once concept with my tool building session, but it bit me in the arse.. It took a long time to get back on track... Anyway something is happening, which is to cheer about. =) He has to defeat some fears of welding and metal shaping, but I feel he's close...
