It’s literally important for forensic scientists to know the background on people. It’s important information. It makes these horrible people real, because these people are out there. Every day. Everywhere. You have to be careful about strangers, not paranoid but careful. This guys seemed so normal other than being rather weird. Nobody suspected him even though his flat was filled with dead bodies. These people are a part of society and to separate them from the human race makes them seem like fictional horror movie killers. Texas chainsaw massacre is based off of a killer. This information that explains why it happened, can make it so we can prevent and catch these people.
That would permanently scar any kid, it's a horrible thing for a Mum to do. It seems like she must have had some mental health problems to have done something so cruel. I don't know if she meant it to be cruel or if she didn't have the ability to see that it was cruel but ffs.
My Grandad (with whom I was extremely close) was given 5 years to live when he went to the doc's office for his heart... So we all knew he would die soon but maybe I was in denial? I guess? Idk... (I was 13 at the time if that tells you anything.) Anyway, fast forward 6 yrs later, (I was 19) and my new husband called and said, "Where are you? You need to go to your Grandmother and Grandadys house RIGHT NOW.... Its Grandad." Otw there I remember bawling my eyes out thinking, well this is it, time to say goodbye... So I came sliding up in their drive, jumped outta the truck and flew up the stairs. At first I couldn't find anyone so I went straight to their bedroom. So... Yeah. Grandaddy died sometime earlier in the night ( probably around 2 or 3am and now it was about 730am). I will never forget how he looked. It was very traumatic to say the least. (Btw, my family didnt realize I misunderstood or they definitely would've warned me.)

This is just a thought, but he was only 5 so I wonder if he just doesn’t have memories of his mom telling him his grandpa had passed and the only memory he does have is just her asking if he wanted to see his grandpa before he was buried and he’d never see him again. Idk just a thought. I have very spotty memories at 5 years old. 🤷♀️
one of the saddest parts is that the people he would kill often went relatively unnoticed. As gay men many of them probably were outcasted by their families/friends
Ikr. I was just thinking about that. Except for one of them,who's disappearance got a lot of attention, other men were mostly from the margine of the society. Not only they were gay, but also homeless, drug or alcohol addicts and no one bother too much to look for them when they disappeared. It is really very sad. Also, if he was reported to the police at least three times for attempted murder, how come that the police didn't look into his case. If they took those surviving men seriously, they could prevented more deaths.
This is what I was thinking. In a weird way, Dennis was similar to them-an outsider. In one way, it's sad because the fact it went unnoticed, the fact a lot of gay men were homeless is down to people's attitudes and their own families not caring.
@@Willow_moon364 It's strange because Nilsen seemed to kind of acknowledge that yeah, there was a problem. It's why, he said, he took them in and offered them food. He was pretty disgusted at the way society treated people (I mean, everyone cared more about his victims after he'd already killed them!). His case is one which says a lot about how important it is for the vulnerable to be protected, and for the police to listen to vulnerable people when they go to them for help.

In a podcast I listened to about this he was kicked from his first apartment because they complained about a smell and he got evicted. That was the only time he managed to effectively dispose of bodies

Wow, what his mother did to him was horrible. He was a child. Children don't really understand death. Her approach with introducing the idea to him was really messed up. That must have traumatized him
A lot of details in this video lead me to believe that this man wanted attention and recognition for what he's done. I would take the details of his tragic backstory with a grain of salt.

It makes me so sad to think about the first victim. He was only 14, he was literally only a child, and that makes me so sad, and kinda sick to my stomach. He had so much of his life to look foward to only to have it forcibly taken from him.
ImNotAwaffle We interviewed Kay Holmes ( Stephens Mother ) if you could have seen how this had destroyed her mentally and physically as she could not be 100% certain that DN had murdered her son and she persisted each and every single day searching for information on Stephen's whereabouts, hoping and preying he would one day come back to her. The whole situation caused her to seek help from mental health services which back then were next to useless with psychiatrist preferring to offer her sleeping tablets rather than listen to her story, ( as they did not believe DN had murdered Stephen, they thought all this was in her imagination ) this led to her separating from her husband who had by then moved back to Ireland as the stress had become to much for him to deal with. Kay was finally proved right but sadly it was too late for her to know the truth as she had passed away a few years prior to it being confirmed. Many reports mention that Stephen was gay, this I can assure you and anyone else reading this that this was not the case. Stephen was 14 when he was killed by DN and in our opinion far too young to be labelled gay, unless he'd specifically asked to be. Absolutely nothing in his room or in his diary suggested he was anything but straight. As Kay mentioned in the interview if he had of been he most certainly would have told her as he knew just how much she adored her son and would do anything for him. If Stephen had told her he was gay both she and her husband and daughter would have loved him no less than if he had been straight. I have to admit that I've become quite hardened to doing these interviews over the years but the interview with Kay had me completely blown away with sadness.

I catched my friend (male) watching gay p*rn at 12 and he confessed me having crushes on guys since that age, also he had many of the mannerisms even earlier on. Still he never told anyone and even 'dated' some girls up until he came out at 18 but it was all a front friends closer to him always knew he was gay. Still i get what you mean, Stephen didn't give any signs or tell so I get he wasn't I'm just saying.
there are cases where people are sexually assaulted and / or raped, especially as a teenager or child and then after, as they're processing the event and trauma from it, try to believe they enjoyed it so it doesn't feel as bad to remember, or develop rape fantasies and/or a consensual non-consent kink because of the experience (obviously not everyone with either of these has them for this reason), or even believe (or want to believe) that they want it to happen again, even if they didn't actually enjoy it in the moment. obviously I have no way of knowing why he said what he did about being assaulted and no one else does either, maybe not even him. the brain tries to deal with and recover from trauma however it can, sometimes, unfortunately, creating more issues for itself, the person, and their mental and/or physical health later on (like this or developing BPD for example). :/ while I of course can't sympathize with someone like this or excuse his adult behavior with past trauma (I was repeatedly SA'd AND saw one of my best friends dead as a teenager and didn't turn out like him), the teenager he was didn't deserve to be SA'd, no one does, and it's still sad. :(
I assumed that he meant that having sex with a man wasn't unpleasant not the fact that he was attacked. That maybe this attack made him more aware of his own sexuality.

it's kinda like hoarders, they get so used to the smell they dont notice anything is wrong with the smell. I think he got so used to the dead body smell that it just smelt normal to him
That interview when he talks about cutting up the bodies so nonchalantly 😬 this is why I don’t trust anyone, ever! You could bump into that man at the grocery store & never know he was systematically cutting up year old dead bodies.
Megan Mango Im not sure if its because he genuinly doesnt care or if he has said these things so many times. Either way isnt good but many victums do the same thing you learn to detach yourself. Hell I do the same thing when I talk about being raped. Its just something people do. Yes he is a killer and not a victum but I think its safe to assume with all he had fucked up in his head he got really good at detatching himself.

That just makes me wonder how many times the police were just careless toward victims. And how many times the victim just gave up knowing they were not gonna get any help from the people who are supposed to protect them. 💔
It's like when that young boy escaped from Jeffrey Dahmer and ran out into the street naked, drugged out and bleeding from his backside. People walking by called the cops, but when they came Dahmer just walked over and said "Don't mind the bleeding child, I'm his adult boyfriend" and they gave the poor kid back to him (and this was after Dahmer had killed the kids brother in the past too). When the witnesses asked what had happened the police basically told them it was a lovers spat and it wasn't their business -_-

I love how in cases like this, when survivors go to the police, and the police excuse them not checking up on it as a “lovers spat” like? That’s not an excuse? Even if it was a spat between boyfriends, it’s still assault? A similar thing happened in Jeffrey Dahmer’s case where the victim Konerak Sinthasomphone managed to escape from Dahmer’s apartment, and two ladies found him and called the police. The police came and the women tried to tell them Sinthasomphone was in danger, but Dahmer convinced the officers that they were lovers, and the police ended up taking Sinthasomphone back to Dahmer’s appartment. The police even smelled something odd in the apartment, but didn’t investigate. It’s just a combination of homophobia and police negligence.
Close but the name was wrong, it was Konerak Sinthasomphone, he was Dahmer's youngest victim( 14 years old), and he convinced the racist and homophobic police that Konerak was his 19 year old boyfriend.

Its crazy right? When Gacy’s first victim was assaulted they actually wrote it off as “consent gone wrong” because “gay men can’t assault each other,” aside from Gacy being a member of the community. They locked his records too so when his FIRST VICTIM (one of his first few) went to go report it, the police just shrugged and didn’t do much. So many young boys could’ve been saved Hell there were so many COMPLAINTS about t the smell of his crawl space. Ugh.

I lowkey feel bad for the guy, I feel like if he was born around our time, a more accepting time, he maybe wouldn't have done it. But you can say that about a lot of people.
I know right like it’s not that I want to justify but he was not raised right and everything in his life contributed to this. Him not being accepted, him not having a person, or him not getting mental health. I feel bad even though there were the murders he’s still a human who was put through these wrong conditions that all shaped the way he grew up and who he became.

Dennis Nilsen is my uncle and honestly what you’ve just said is so true I’m sat reading these comments of pure disrespect I’m no where near justifying his actions at all but it also effected my family my auntie and Dennis’s brother olav had to go into hiding cos people wanted to kill them just because they were related to him and the things I see people saying about his family is disgusting

It's interesting. Naturally it makes sense that it's possible, if both partners have low enough hormone levels that they're fine never having sex. But, the sex in a (typical) romance is (varyingly) corollary to the love, it's not just an add-on like a mutual love for Mario Kart or bicycling. Does that mean the part of love that sex enhances and makes tangible, that's all missing in an asexual couple? Not that that should ruin it
@@nthgth not necessarily. You can be aroused and horny and se* with a person does nothing for you. Some asexuals don’t experience this but many do and masturbate. But sex with another person seems pointless to them. No extra pleasure received or anything. Like being a chef and going out to eat daily. Why do that? I could make better food at home. Still get hungry, still want luxury food. Rather make it themselves.

MikaylaC204 eventually your nose kinda gets so used to a smell you don’t notice it like the way you would go in your home and not notice a smell but in a foreign area you immediately notice the difference

I can't fathom why Dennis' mother would have allowed her five-year-old son to see his grandfather's corpse. My grandfather passed when I was twelve and I wasn't allowed to see him in his casket. Before he passed, he requested that my younger sisters and I not present for the viewing. I am grateful for this. I wouldn't have been able to handle that.
I find that strange. Being Irish we've always had wakes and stuff to give the person a good send off but also to help those left behind deal with their grief. Wakes are generally happy occasions (as happy as they can be when you lose a loved one) whereas the burial itself is when we cry. Kids will be at these events no matter their age to teach them that everyone passes on. I was 6 when I first saw a dead person
My mother made the decision to let me see my grandfather’s body when I was 3 years old, and honestly it traumatised me. I didn’t understand what death was or why he had “gone away” and I had nightmares for years afterwards. I was incredibly close with my grandfather and even now whenever I think of him I struggle to remember any of the good memories, but I vividly remember his body lying still in his coffin
One thing is to let him see the body in the wake or explain in detail what happened. But to send him right then and there while crying after asking him 'do you wanna see grandpa? He's there' was so careless and bratty. Sounded to me like purposely trying to confuse the kid
I saw my mom's coffin when I was 2 years old, and my grandfather's coffin when I was ~10 years old. I didn't regret it; I loved them and wanted to see them at the last moment.

I don't think that Dennis was a horrible person, since, you know, he was completely honest with the locations of the bodies and the stories and Eleanor also mentioned that he felt guilty and did not wanted to do all that. He was just a really damaged kid.
i think this is the only case where i feel truly bad for the killer. to me, at least, it feels like his murders could have been prevented if he had gotten the attention a child needs when he was young. of course, he's a killer and he deserves to be held accountable for his murders, but i just feel like this could have been prevented idk edit: it's more like a sad feeling that maybe so many people's lives could have been saved if this could have been prevented in any way.
I think at one point or another every true crime fan feels this way about one killer or another - I know I felt similar conflicted sad feelings about John Wayne Gacy. But I do feel like it’s important to remember that there are plenty of abused, neglected kids that don’t get help right away and don’t murder people.
Boo hoo serial killers usually have terrible pasta involving neglect, they still made the conscious choose to inflict suffering on other people for their own selfish reasons. Stop feeling bad for serial killers
I have a quote here that I really love. Everyone has obstacles. Everyone has things in their life they need to overcome. The day we start letting people use these obstacles, these bad events excuse them from their actions, that’s the day we might as well open all the cells to the jailhouse. I guarantee you most criminal have terrible pasts. You gonna feel bad for everyone that rapes, kills, tortured and inflicts pain and suffering?
Zoe Frew this quote is dumb and ignores the existence of mental illness. Of course we shouldn’t feel bad for all serial killers but some have more sad lives and pasts than others and have gone through worse trauma. Look at the unabomber who had been part of horrific mind control experiments in his early adulthood- you’d have to be a psychopath yourself to have NO sympathy for that
Most psychopaths are usually pretty calm when reciting their crimes. Watch an interview with Ted Bundy or Dahmer for example; their demeanors are pretty similar to Nilsen. Disturbing 😬😨
i believe where carl forgets his situation is a trauma response where when you go through something very traumatic, your brain suppresses the memory to shield yourself from remembering and going through the stress of having the memory.
Okay, so this man's crimes are _disgusting_ and I'm not trying to excuse any of his behavior in any way, but does anyone else feel kind of... sorry for him? I'm at the point in the video where Eleanor is talking about him keeping corpses around his house just to have some company, and weirdly, my heart is breaking for this guy. I'm not saying he's guiltless, or worth the sympathy I feel for him. He chose to commit these hideous murders, and obviously being a lonely person doesn't excuse his despicable actions. But. Part of me wonders what would've happened if he'd been treated differently by the people around him as he grew up, or if he'd ever been shown the love he craved. Do you think it would've changed anything? Do you think he still would've become a murderer? I can't help but to feel a little sorry for him, even knowing all of the horrific things he did. It's a bit worrying to me, honestly. EDIT: I've gotten a bit further into the video and I don't feel as sorry for him anymore. I'm just. Repulsed. This guy was sick in his mind.

Honestly, if you get really deep into a lot of serial killers/criminals histories there are really upsetting factors. They are and were human beings, even though they were awful. It's not bad to feel empathy for people's situations.
I must say some times the evil part of us can get the best of us and even though we don't want to do something horrible, we often feel like we have to do it. It's like we've got a kinship with the devil and we're his servants. Anyway that's a little something to do with my life currently but luckily I'm getting the help I need. I don’t want to sound like I’m excusing or justifying his crimes at all, but stories like Dennis’s make me all the more worried about children who go through things like he did. He was a sort of ticking time bomb. He needed something to prompt this to happen. The first thing that started that into motion was likely what his mother did, then the treatment of queer men he’d seen and experienced. I’m sure if hadn’t been that, he’d probably have still snapped for some other reason, but it still makes me always be conscious of the way I treat people and especially children. You never know what a mean word could trigger in a stranger, and you never know what they might do to you or someone else. Be kind, and always tell a trusted friend where you’re going if you hook up with stranger
Katrina while I get what you’re saying, no one can stop other people from making adult decisions, like hooking up with people they met in a bar or on an app. We can only make sure they know the dangers and weigh what it’s worth, and take precautions to keep themselves safe regardless of what they choose to do.
I agree with this wholeheartedly however I think you could have used a better word than "queer". I have a lot of gay friends including my best friend and the word queer is highly offensive to then as being gay is a natural thing not queer. The rest of your comment though I agree with xxxx
@@darkangelholz hi I am trans and queer and it is literally right there in the acronym LGBTQ. I know this is coming from a good place but the queer community has been using the word queer just as long as the word gay. It’s an easier umbrella term than assuming he specifically was gay. Most of our other terms (lesbian and gay being the big ones) were slurs used against us at the same time as the word queer, and reclaimed at the same time.
My dad met Dennis Neilson when he was a teenager backpacking through London. My dad was out late trying to find a place to stay for the night because he couldn’t get into a hostel and he ran into Dennis who offered my dad a bed at his place. My dad said yes, but he was getting weird vibes from the guy but then eventually fell asleep. My dad randomly woke up that night to Dennis sleeping next to my dad, my dad freaked out and left!!! Didn’t find out about who Dennis was until he got back to Australia and was a few years older.
@Witty Witty my dad was a young boy, Dennis was an older man… he told my dad he’d sleep on the couch so my dad could have the bed and then he snuck in the bed while my dad was asleep. This man killed a lot of young men, so obviously there is a lot wrong with him sleeping next to my dad.

Please do a video on Jill Meagher. She was an Australian ABC worker/journalist who was brutally murdered in a Melbourne city laneway in 2012 on her way home from a work dinner party. There's a documentary about her case on UA-cam.
It's so weird to think that Malcolm had gone there thinking Nielson was a caring and compassionate man who had helped him when he was ill when really he was a killer who'd kill him and he had said thank you to his killer and he'd have been a lot safer staying away and not going to say thanks.

once again, the police are so wrong in these cases! If they didn’t assume it was sexual and just looked into it that one little bit more they could’ve stopped atleast 15+ lives if they found the first victim of the murder... so sad!!!

This is a serious case of what negligence and the lack of support at a young age can do to a person. His only will to see his name on the newspaper was not just control, but also that the attention he did not get as a child needed to be filled.

The drama called “Des” was about Dennis Nilsen. David Tennant played him and he eerily looks and sounds like him. He plays him perfectly. I think it was on ITV and was a 3 part series. Worth a watch if this is a case of interest to you 👌🏻

Ikr. I was just thinking about that. Except for one of them,who's disappearance got a lot of attention, other men were mostly from the margine of the society. Not only they were gay, but also homeless, drug or alcohol addicts and no one bother too much to look for them when they disappeared. It is really very sad.
Also, if he was reported to the police at least three times for attempted murder, how come that the police didn't look into his case. If they took those surviving men seriously, they could prevented more deaths.

ImNotAwaffle We interviewed Kay Holmes ( Stephens Mother ) if you could have seen how this had destroyed her mentally and physically as she could not be 100% certain that DN had murdered her son and she persisted each and every single day searching for information on Stephen's whereabouts, hoping and preying he would one day come back to her. The whole situation caused her to seek help from mental health services which back then were next to useless with psychiatrist preferring to offer her sleeping tablets rather than listen to her story, ( as they did not believe DN had murdered Stephen, they thought all this was in her imagination ) this led to her separating from her husband who had by then moved back to Ireland as the stress had become to much for him to deal with. Kay was finally proved right but sadly it was too late for her to know the truth as she had passed away a few years prior to it being confirmed. Many reports mention that Stephen was gay, this I can assure you and anyone else reading this that this was not the case. Stephen was 14 when he was killed by DN and in our opinion far too young to be labelled gay, unless he'd specifically asked to be. Absolutely nothing in his room or in his diary suggested he was anything but straight. As Kay mentioned in the interview if he had of been he most certainly would have told her as he knew just how much she adored her son and would do anything for him. If Stephen had told her he was gay both she and her husband and daughter would have loved him no less than if he had been straight. I have to admit that I've become quite hardened to doing these interviews over the years but the interview with Kay had me completely blown away with sadness.

there are cases where people are sexually assaulted and / or raped, especially as a teenager or child and then after, as they're processing the event and trauma from it, try to believe they enjoyed it so it doesn't feel as bad to remember, or develop rape fantasies and/or a consensual non-consent kink because of the experience (obviously not everyone with either of these has them for this reason), or even believe (or want to believe) that they want it to happen again, even if they didn't actually enjoy it in the moment.
obviously I have no way of knowing why he said what he did about being assaulted and no one else does either, maybe not even him. the brain tries to deal with and recover from trauma however it can, sometimes, unfortunately, creating more issues for itself, the person, and their mental and/or physical health later on (like this or developing BPD for example). :/
while I of course can't sympathize with someone like this or excuse his adult behavior with past trauma (I was repeatedly SA'd AND saw one of my best friends dead as a teenager and didn't turn out like him), the teenager he was didn't deserve to be SA'd, no one does, and it's still sad. :(

I love how in cases like this, when survivors go to the police, and the police excuse them not checking up on it as a “lovers spat” like? That’s not an excuse? Even if it was a spat between boyfriends, it’s still assault?
A similar thing happened in Jeffrey Dahmer’s case where the victim Konerak Sinthasomphone managed to escape from Dahmer’s apartment, and two ladies found him and called the police. The police came and the women tried to tell them Sinthasomphone was in danger, but Dahmer convinced the officers that they were lovers, and the police ended up taking Sinthasomphone back to Dahmer’s appartment. The police even smelled something odd in the apartment, but didn’t investigate.
It’s just a combination of homophobia and police negligence.
Close but the name was wrong, it was Konerak Sinthasomphone, he was Dahmer's youngest victim( 14 years old), and he convinced the racist and homophobic police that Konerak was his 19 year old boyfriend.

I’m so confused how he lived in that. Like if there was even one dead body there’s horrible smell. How did he stand the smell? How did he himself not reek and how did nobody know? AND! How did none of these men coming over not smell anything when they were even near the flat?

MikaylaC204 eventually your nose kinda gets so used to a smell you don’t notice it like the way you would go in your home and not notice a smell but in a foreign area you immediately notice the difference

I can't fathom why Dennis' mother would have allowed her five-year-old son to see his grandfather's corpse. My grandfather passed when I was twelve and I wasn't allowed to see him in his casket. Before he passed, he requested that my younger sisters and I not present for the viewing. I am grateful for this. I wouldn't have been able to handle that.
I find that strange. Being Irish we've always had wakes and stuff to give the person a good send off but also to help those left behind deal with their grief. Wakes are generally happy occasions (as happy as they can be when you lose a loved one) whereas the burial itself is when we cry. Kids will be at these events no matter their age to teach them that everyone passes on. I was 6 when I first saw a dead person
My mother made the decision to let me see my grandfather’s body when I was 3 years old, and honestly it traumatised me. I didn’t understand what death was or why he had “gone away” and I had nightmares for years afterwards. I was incredibly close with my grandfather and even now whenever I think of him I struggle to remember any of the good memories, but I vividly remember his body lying still in his coffin
One thing is to let him see the body in the wake or explain in detail what happened.
But to send him right then and there while crying after asking him 'do you wanna see grandpa? He's there' was so careless and bratty. Sounded to me like purposely trying to confuse the kid
I saw my mom's coffin when I was 2 years old, and my grandfather's coffin when I was ~10 years old. I didn't regret it; I loved them and wanted to see them at the last moment.

I don't think that Dennis was a horrible person, since, you know, he was completely honest with the locations of the bodies and the stories and Eleanor also mentioned that he felt guilty and did not wanted to do all that. He was just a really damaged kid.

i think this is the only case where i feel truly bad for the killer. to me, at least, it feels like his murders could have been prevented if he had gotten the attention a child needs when he was young. of course, he's a killer and he deserves to be held accountable for his murders, but i just feel like this could have been prevented idk
edit: it's more like a sad feeling that maybe so many people's lives could have been saved if this could have been prevented in any way.
I think at one point or another every true crime fan feels this way about one killer or another - I know I felt similar conflicted sad feelings about John Wayne Gacy. But I do feel like it’s important to remember that there are plenty of abused, neglected kids that don’t get help right away and don’t murder people.
Boo hoo serial killers usually have terrible pasta involving neglect, they still made the conscious choose to inflict suffering on other people for their own selfish reasons. Stop feeling bad for serial killers

Most psychopaths are usually pretty calm when reciting their crimes. Watch an interview with Ted Bundy or Dahmer for example; their demeanors are pretty similar to Nilsen. Disturbing 😬😨

i believe where carl forgets his situation is a trauma response where when you go through something very traumatic, your brain suppresses the memory to shield yourself from remembering and going through the stress of having the memory.
Okay, so this man's crimes are _disgusting_ and I'm not trying to excuse any of his behavior in any way, but does anyone else feel kind of... sorry for him? I'm at the point in the video where Eleanor is talking about him keeping corpses around his house just to have some company, and weirdly, my heart is breaking for this guy. I'm not saying he's guiltless, or worth the sympathy I feel for him. He chose to commit these hideous murders, and obviously being a lonely person doesn't excuse his despicable actions.
But.
Part of me wonders what would've happened if he'd been treated differently by the people around him as he grew up, or if he'd ever been shown the love he craved. Do you think it would've changed anything? Do you think he still would've become a murderer? I can't help but to feel a little sorry for him, even knowing all of the horrific things he did. It's a bit worrying to me, honestly.
EDIT: I've gotten a bit further into the video and I don't feel as sorry for him anymore. I'm just. Repulsed. This guy was sick in his mind.

Honestly, if you get really deep into a lot of serial killers/criminals histories there are really upsetting factors. They are and were human beings, even though they were awful. It's not bad to feel empathy for people's situations.

I must say some times the evil part of us can get the best of us and even though we don't want to do something horrible, we often feel like we have to do it. It's like we've got a kinship with the devil and we're his servants. Anyway that's a little something to do with my life currently but luckily I'm getting the help I need. He’s not “sick in his mind”. You can’t help being sick, killers choose to kill.
I don’t want to sound like I’m excusing or justifying his crimes at all, but stories like Dennis’s make me all the more worried about children who go through things like he did. He was a sort of ticking time bomb. He needed something to prompt this to happen.
The first thing that started that into motion was likely what his mother did, then the treatment of queer men he’d seen and experienced. I’m sure if hadn’t been that, he’d probably have still snapped for some other reason, but it still makes me always be conscious of the way I treat people and especially children. You never know what a mean word could trigger in a stranger, and you never know what they might do to you or someone else. Be kind, and always tell a trusted friend where you’re going if you hook up with stranger

Katrina while I get what you’re saying, no one can stop other people from making adult decisions, like hooking up with people they met in a bar or on an app. We can only make sure they know the dangers and weigh what it’s worth, and take precautions to keep themselves safe regardless of what they choose to do.

I agree with this wholeheartedly however I think you could have used a better word than "queer". I have a lot of gay friends including my best friend and the word queer is highly offensive to then as being gay is a natural thing not queer. The rest of your comment though I agree with xxxx
@@darkangelholz hi I am trans and queer and it is literally right there in the acronym LGBTQ. I know this is coming from a good place but the queer community has been using the word queer just as long as the word gay. It’s an easier umbrella term than assuming he specifically was gay. Most of our other terms (lesbian and gay being the big ones) were slurs used against us at the same time as the word queer, and reclaimed at the same time.
My dad met Dennis Neilson when he was a teenager backpacking through London. My dad was out late trying to find a place to stay for the night because he couldn’t get into a hostel and he ran into Dennis who offered my dad a bed at his place. My dad said yes, but he was getting weird vibes from the guy but then eventually fell asleep. My dad randomly woke up that night to Dennis sleeping next to my dad, my dad freaked out and left!!! Didn’t find out about who Dennis was until he got back to Australia and was a few years older.

This man killed a lot of young men, so obviously there is a lot wrong with him sleeping next to my dad.

It's so weird to think that Malcolm had gone there thinking Nielson was a caring and compassionate man who had helped him when he was ill when really he was a killer who'd kill him and he had said thank you to his killer and he'd have been a lot safer staying away and not going to say thanks.

once again, the police are so wrong in these cases! If they didn’t assume it was sexual and just looked into it that one little bit more they could’ve stopped atleast 15+ lives if they found the first victim of the murder... so sad!!!

This is a serious case of what negligence and the lack of support at a young age can do to a person. His only will to see his name on the newspaper was not just control, but also that the attention he did not get as a child needed to be filled.

I’m thinking he experienced a psychotic break due to the extreeeeeme cognitive dissonance of being so happy and then feeling the absolute opposite in an instant when he saw his dead grandfather.
The drama called “Des” was about Dennis Nilsen. David Tennant played him and he eerily looks and sounds like him. He plays him perfectly. I think it was on ITV and was a 3 part series. Worth a watch if this is a case of interest to you 👌🏻
