Nah I don't think so. When you make it that long in the game without getting caught or receiving any serious consequences, you'll be bound to make some careless mistakes. The biggest tell for me was when he was pulled over for speeding after leaving a hotel in his white Ford focus, and he appeared very anxious. If you want to get caught, and die in a grand way, he would be calm.
I guess you could say it's all an act to make cops think- no that wouldn't make any sense. Being calm would work in his interest. I don't know, but I doubt that.

He also studied many serial killers to find out how they got caught, and what they did wrong, so he didn’t do the same things. That’s why he was so prepared, and never killed in his area. I remember feeling so scared when Samantha went missing because coffee huts on nearly every corner in Anchorage, and there are so many young women and girls who work at these coffee huts. It hit way too close to home to have this happen in my city. When I was a junior in high school, the lead detective in Samantha's case came to my school and gave a presentation explaining how she caught Israel. The part that really stuck with me was how he sent "proof of life" pictures long after she was dead, which meant that he had to make her body look like she was still alive. That's just disgusting. I am so angry that he killed himself in prison because he deserved to live in a locked box for the rest of his miserable life.

I am pretty sure I was attacked by Israel Keyes in Olympia, WA in 2005-2006. I was a student at TESC and it settled in a rainforest...a lot of dense Evergreen trees for miles and miles. I was walking home after dark to the apartments on campus and this guy who appeared to be out for a run asked me which way a certain street was, I pointed him towards where he was asking about, and kept walking. A couple of minutes later he attacked me from behind, tried to cover my mouth and pull me off the trail and deeper into the trees. Luckily someone had their window open and he ran off. I saw Israel Keyes picture once he was captured and the whole story came out -- my blood went cold. I to this day, believe I survived this guy.
Fun fact: The parking lot I was walking home from was the same one that Ted Bundy abducted a victim from, and this is also something one of the responding officers felt appropriate to mention while I was in my dorm and they were taking a report.

when it comes to the family/spouses, i really believe many of them dont actually know whats going on. because even if you think your spouse is acting strange, it is a HUGE leap to then think "oh hes murdering people." Like that is not a logical thought you would have. Like say you were ordering coffee in a coffee shop and the barista was acting strange. you may suspect that they are messing with your drink, but then they turn around and hand you a monkey. like how were you ever supposed to know that they had a monkey. it doesnt make logical sense for that to be something youd suspect. I imagine its probably the same kind of deal when someone you love and trust turns out to be a monster. you might suspect them of being shady and cheating or stealing/lying but MURDER? i dont think most of us would go there without explicit proof.

I find the military aspect one of the most fascinating aspects of the case and as much as nothing can explain being a serial killer, there is a lot you can pull out of it. In my personal analysis of his situation I’d say a massive part of the appeal of joining the army would be because it was an outlet for him.
He’d never really had a ‘normal’ upbringing and by being forced into a lifestyle where instead of people trying to help with his obvious psychological problems, he was just outcasted for it. This would form a LOT of pent up anger:
    - anger to his parents for his childhood
    - anger to his siblings for not having the same issues as him
    - anger at the people in the church
    - anger at himself as well
However, he had no way to express this. He didn’t have friends to vent to, he didn’t have ways to relax such as TV or books, he didn’t have time away from his thoughts and he barely did anything. So a ton of anger and resentment will have pent up with him. This could also explain how he’d go around shooting things, I reckon he has some sort of need for adrenaline which would explain many of his erratic decisions.
I think he probably recognised this around the time when he was 17 or 18 and he wanted to change hinting at his interest in change of religion. But I think at this point he found what, he thought, might be a potential solve for his issues: satanic sacrifices. And that was where that desire came from.
Now when he joined the army he had a new outlet, to be in the army you have to workout a lot and you do a fair amount of combat and shooting practices. This probably somewhat settled his violent urges. He was also surrounded by people who potentially also had their own issues. So by being in the army it not only gave him that chaos he so badly needed but also a sense of comfort.
It brought back many aspects of his life which he might of enjoyed and put them together:
    - he had a sense of order and isolation that he’d had in Washington when he was younger
    - he was allowed to openly fulfill his violent needs
    - he had a group of people that surrounded him all the time much like his childhood home
Whilst many parts of his thought process I cannot comprehend, there are some parts I can understand and unpack, his case is so interesting.

I had a friend visit me here in Anchorage last winter, and it was a shock to her that a lot of the coffee stops in town don’t allow foot traffic, that they make it clear through signage that they carry, that they don’t take cash, stuff like that. And to me, because I’d grown up here I just assumed that’s how coffee stops were around the whole country. I knew a lot of that became standard practice around here because of Samantha’s abduction, but at the same time it just seems like that should’ve been the standard in the first place.
I don’t think it was a mistake Samantha was kidnapped from that particular coffee stop either, I mean there’s literally one around every corner here. But that stop in particular, their whole vibe gives me the ick tbh. For the longest time their entire brand centered on their “cute fun Alaska white chick” baristas, plastering their faces on socials and even on the backs of their coffee cards; these women are 100% their main selling point. Then on top of that their baristas were working solo shifts in those tiny shacks with one way in, one way out, in the middle of dark ass Alaskan winters. And it wasn’t until this past year that their branding finally changed.
Anyways, obviously the real monster here is the sicko who abducted Samantha, but it’s not like the coffee stop owners did much to protect their employees in the first place. Pisses me off that it took an actual abduction for the business owners to put reasonable safety measures in place. My heart breaks for Samantha and her family, I hope they are doing as well as they can be.

Hi Ellie! Just a little clarification on "tubing". There's many different types, but what you are describing is more what we would just call "river floats". Most commonly, tubing is done behind a boat. Like water-skiing or wakeboarding. The tube is hooked up to a rope on the boat and you're pulled behind it and you have to try and hold on. With kids you usually take it a bit more gently, but with adults it's more of a game for the boat driver to see if they can throw the people on the tube...off. So you hit big waves, take sharp turns, go really fast, etc...
And for winter tubing, idk, we usually just still call it sledding. Rubber tubes aren't as popular in the snow because a stray branch or rock can easily pop a hole in it.

Where I’m from, in northern Minnesota, we call floating down the river “tubing”. but we also call going behind a boat in a tube “tubing”, because it’s done with a tube and not skis or knee boards. “Winter tubing” isn’t sledding though because you do it with tubes and not sleds. I’m only clarifying because it depends on who you ask

the fact that he got pleasure from other's pain makes me believe he didn't want to confess to all his crimes and found it a better option to let these innocent victim's families be in pain from the loss and from not knowing what happened to their loved one. that's truely horrifying

I grew up in Washington and have been to both Colville and Neah Bay. For some reason, both places are so placid, remote, stunningly beautiful, and peaceful that it’s difficult to imagine such horrors happening there. For those who aren’t familiar with those locations, know that he was honing his skills in genuinely REMOTE places. The amount of people he could have killed and had them explained away as hunting accidents or exposure to the elements (or their bodies would never be found in the wilderness at all) is unparalleled in most places in the Lower 48. It truly is possible to get away with murder out there. If someone disappears in an area that remote, the automatic assumption is that an animal got to them or that they got lost in the woods, not that they were killed.

Having watched 20 years of true crime and even earned a Masters in Forensic Psych, Keyes is the killer that scares me the most. If he hadn't broken his own rules, he would most likely have so many more victims. He would also reportedly dump victims in bodies of water that were unsearchable, meaning no on could dive that far down to retrieve the bodies or evidence and he liked to stake out wilderness areas. You wonder how many Missing 411 cases were actually Keyes' work. So glad he is dead. Super effing evil demon he was. I'm' impressed his daughter has never been identified. Poor girl. If she is even still living, she must live a tortured existence as well. Thanks for the great coverage, Eleanor! You dug up a lot!

I have been waiting to hear someone do this case! It is sooooo crazy how smart and collected this guy was especially with all of his planning and careful execution. I read a book about his case on a road trip and have been fascinated for months! It scares me that someone can be like this and just because of awful luck for him he get caught. Thinking about how someone can be so methodical and careless of his actions while leading a double life. It baffles me and thank you for sharing this awful case! It needs more awareness!!!!

I had a similar, though not as off the grid, religious upbringing and my family was ordered by the “church” to disown me like that (literally shun me and never speak to me again or else they would be kicked out). Thankfully my mom chose to leave with me but I still had that learning period where you’re figuring out how the world actually works outside of the cult. Anyway a lot of his background hit close to home, but wow this case is crazy.

@@Tre.1 It’s just the rules. Not just family but friends too. Like the first time it happened to someone we knew it was our friend who was teaching me art, one day my mom told me we were never allowed to see her again because she admitted to having sex before marriage. Having friends outside the church is allowed but frowned upon, but people who were in the church and broke the rules are like 10x worse so talking to them is a “sin” on its own. They’re still allowed to show up but until the church leaders officially let them back in you literally have to pretend you don’t see them (edit: for me specifically it’s because they found out I was gay)

you can tell how much of this case they took as inspiration for the latest season of the criminal minds: evolution reboot. Sicarius/Elias Voit had hidden kill kits in multiple states, a normal family, his wife thought he was traveling for work, never killed anyone who could be tied back to him, had no victim type etc. i think they even mention him in an episode. so eerie.
