Other cool fact is that NFL used when lighting was poor in 1940's after WWII, an all light tan ball/called the white ball for night games. Before 1940's lighting for NFL or for that matter most outdoor sports, lighting was not there enough to even play, so no night games or at least very few. Only in early 1950's did lighting get better using theater spotlights on a tall pole a few of them, not just one on each pole to not need the night game ball.

I’ve never actually seen an NFL football fly in person, only CFL. And I’ll tell you: It’s a piece of cake to see that thing flying through the air. And really fun to see the white circles vibrate when rotation is fast and tight in a spiral!
One ball that wasn’t covered was an arena league football which is skinner but longer and I think looks the best in the air and you can make the most insane catches with it lol
Yeah, the NFL certainly does not want outside influences like Vegas and other casino gambling, or online betting or the Fantasy betting to influence the outcome of gams. 😊
They frown on it because someone could get hurt. That part about official balls are not sold to the public is only because no one has football tracking technology in their backyard or on their bedroom bookshelf so they don't need balls with chips.
The NFL in the beginning did permit stripes on the ball, especially for use in night games televised or not, until 1976. Also, the NFL's football named "The Duke" was named after the Giants co-founder Tim Mara's son Wellington Mara's nickname.
@holdenmuganda97 Tim Mara was the co-founder of the New York Football Giants in 1925, but when he passed in 1959, he passed the team down to his sons Jack and Wellington Mara.
Funn fact: the overhead throw used for Rugby Union lineouts actually came to be from a Rugby player adopting what he had seen, from Football the line out was originally lateral pass, he changed it to an over head throw.
But the American Rugby players threw the ball one-handed, as in American football. Another fun fact: The USA won the Olympic gold medal in rugby in 1920 and 1924.
I’d argue that the striped ball looks better in flight than a non-striped one. Kinda like the old ABA baskeball that had the two tone design and looked really cool with a nice backspin on it.
The Canadian ball has the same overall dimensions as the American ball, but it is slightly less pointed, more like a rugby ball. Regarding the kicking back and forth, you are allowed to drop kick the ball at any time in the CFL, and anyone behind the kicking player is considered onsides and can recover it, including the kicker. This season a player drop kicked the ball a few feet and recovered it himself, giving his team an automatic first down. Several years ago, on the last play of a tie game, one team missed a field goal, but touchbacks (on kicks at least) are worth one point, so the defense needed to get the ball out of their endzone or they would lose the game. They kicked it out, the other team recovered and kicked in back in, there was a scramble for the ball, and eventually the original kicking team recovered the ball for a touchdown. It’s a fun league.
Fun fact: Until about 20 years ago, give or take, CFL balls were all hand stitched, so no two balls were exactly the same. Like the NFL ball, they are machine stitched now, and so they are all uniform in size.
Many years ago Spalding made the CFL football. The league called it the J5V. Why did the league call it the J5V? Because back in the early days of the CFL they sourced their original ball from rugby 🏉 balls purchased out of the Eaton's catalogue... The rugby ball was located. In Section J, page 5, item V. Aka, later as the league developed its own ball calling it the J5V. Eventually in the 2000's the CFL contracted Wilson to make CFL footballs.
I vividly remember when the NFL stopped using striped balls in night games because Terry Bradshaw said he was happy about it because the striped balls were slippery.
I mean the current XFL doest have Stripes either. But the best footballs i have ever seen was the original Red and Black XFL ball, and the old white with blue stripe AFL (Arena Football League) ball.
At 4:24, the football decided taunt the Bills by not going wide right, saying, "You've been through so much heartbreak, I'll sail wide right for another team ... nope!
So we can’t purchase or procure any previously used balls, but what about the balls that are given to fans? Have any of them attempted to open the ball find the proprietary technology?
These balls clearly have MAGNETS in them. There was a game last Sunday - Texans v Broncos - in which 3 FGs were definitely affected by something strange inside the ball. The Broncos kicker looked genuinely amazed that his 1st kick that looked like it was going a mile wide actually was good. There was no wind (indoors) so how did the ball swing left to right by 20 yards? Answer: MAGNETS. I love the NFL but its really just WWE with a (dodgy) ball....

To add to your history of the football, a white ball with black stripes was used for night games until 1956, since stadium lights were pretty crappy. So the legend goes,as more teams wore white jerseys it was discontinued as it was thought the white ball could be “hidden” against the shirts (which doesn’t explain why the Browns couldn’t hide a brown ball against brown shirts, unless it’s because of the chip or the fact we have games in HD, yeah that must be it , right)
Well just made a comment on a video about the "HAWKEYE" introduction, and in it I wondered about why visual and not a "CHIP" based solutions.... Now I know .... atm there all ready is a hardware solution all ready in use. Not for spotting ball position per 'se but ... Cool!
Obviously it would be easier to see the ball if it had stripes. And it would also give the Referees more perspective on where the ball is on those moshpit Touchdown or Not decisions. Seems silly not to have them for I.D. reasons.
I’m thinking about a premise for a movie in which a long time basement dwelling NFL team is able to insert a remote control guidance circuit into the football that is targeted by a joystick manned by the nerdy inventor in the stadium booth. Every pass could theoretically be complete. Of course there would have to be incompletions to make it realistic and hide the cheating. Perhaps starring Will Ferrell as the HC of the team.
