I grew up a cowboys fan expecting the white helmet on thanksgiving Thursday. It was so wild how the same year that single helmet rule went in to effect, color rush became a thing. Waiting for the whiteout cowboys with silver helmets was hilarious knowing they had the old white helmet that would have gone so good
Not only are the throwbacks great, but alternative helmet schemes, like the houston metalic red. I hope the rams bring back the white horn design from a few years ago
Those Tampa Bay Creamsicle jerseys & Errol Flynn logo are still my favorite unis of all time. When they wore them again this season, I found myself rooting for em again, just like I did as a 10 year old kid in 1977.
I truly enjoy the modern trend of this era: Take the old simplicity and add your team's unique twist. Seeing the Jags go form "bright but a bit cluttered" to "it's 90% black now" to "ok fine we're in Florida we'll keep it light" has been great but they're 1 unique sellling point from turning that into a top tier look
I disagree with the jags and cardinals current unis, they’re missing a small detail like a gold lining around the numbers or the arizona state flag incorporated into the designs
The Jags black and white set kills their greatest asset: their teal blue. You want to go basic? Keep it almost all b/w and make the numbers teal blue. Same idea with that Jags flavor

I was watching the Cowboys game and I was just mesmerised by the seahawks uniforms. The blue was so crisp and the way the green merges as a logo and pinstripes on the shoulders made me want to cry. I think simplicity is the way NFL uniforms should be.
These are the kind of uniforms that connect the present to the past. You can watch footage from the 60's, 80's, 2000's, and today and instantly recognize who is what. Likewise, if someone from the 1960's time traveled to today, they would STILL easily recognize their favorite teams (as well as spot the new teams) and that's what's wonderful about the designs.
As a Chiefs fan, I've always found it to be kind of neat that you can go back and watch footage from Super Bowls 1 and 4 and that the Chiefs, Packers, and Vikings basically look the same now as they did then. Don't fix what isn't broken.
The NHL is known for that too. All of the original 6 teams look basically just like they did when they started, minus a couple modern tweaks obviously.
My Vikings have gone through some dark eras. The 2006-2012 era for us was awful, and while our 2013-present uniforms are improvement, nothing beats 1961-2005.
The vast majority of nfl teams’ old uniforms from the 80s/90’s are their best and it’s not even close. Buffalo, Tampa bay, Seattle, Philly, Atlanta, etc, old uniforms are way better than anything they’ve had since they changed from those ones decades ago. Have those teams use those uniforms as their standard every week jersey and use new alternates that are actually good looking like the bengals did with their all whites (which fans of the nfl had been begging the bengals to adopt for years. Seriously, there are dozens of good looking alternates teams should use which fans have designed just like the bengals did with the all whites). It’s that simple.
Philly Kelly green are beautiful. But there modern, and more specifically the black jerseys, are also very clean. They should keep doing what there doing, the throwback uni is a treat now and then.
I agree with you, kinda. I watched the Bills-Eagles game on TV this past Sunday and I honestly don't like the kelly greens all that much. I think the color just doesn't look great on modern TVs and sleek uniforms. Seattle actually looks great in their 80s unis and they should wear those more. Two teams that I think should permanently change back to their 80s looks are the Giants and Rams. They look a lot cleaner in those jerseys. Atlanta and Buffalo look better with red helmets.
as someone who followed football his entire life, i think this is the first time ive seen a deep dive on the actual history of the uniforms in general. Normally whenever the NFL uniform is discussed it's usually about the pads or helmet or perhaps whats the latest design is today for merchandising but never a deep dive like this. Well done.

That’s how I feel about the Seahawks throwback that they brought back this year. I think it’s probably my favorite football uniform of all time now, seeing it in modern form. I always watched those old NFL Films Presents clips of them wearing them back in the day and wished they would bring them back, and they finally did!
Rams Uniforms before the "Dark Age" Navy look in St. Louis, were Perfect! Those Royal Blue & Mustard Yellow Uniforms are A+... I hope we see the Rams go back to that look when their 5 Year Rebrand Window is over

An NFL Fan since 1989. I'm a New York Giants Fan. The Uniforms over time have changed so dramatically. The Wild West of The NFL in the Late 80s, Early Mid to Late 90s. Reebok 2001 - 2011 were great as well. Nike 2012 - Current, Credible Jersey Quality. G III and Mitchell & Ness are Honorable Mentions.
The Giants had cool uniforms in the late 70s, white stripes in the so you could actually see the red center strips, a cool sleeve striping pattern and, most importantly, blue pants with the white jersey
The 'Swindle Era' was also used in the Aussie Rules competition in Victoria(most states had their own leagues back in the day and there wasn't a truly national competition) back in the early 1898 through to 1930. During this period the team who held the top position on the ladder(rankings) at the end of the regular season(they were called the minor premier) could challenge the winner of the finals series, the Premiers, to a 'Challenge Match' if the minor premier had been knocked out of the finals series(play offs) early. So you had teams who had played maybe two less games challenge the true champions to match the week after they'd won the Grand Final and celebrated the win, most likely all week. The Minor Premiers were allowed to bring in players from other teams just for this one game. This is why there's a heap of players back in this era' who only played finals, and regular season matches, for certain teams. Usually the minor premier were more rested and chock full of top tier players from other clubs and they'd roll the true Premierships team in this 'challenge' match. There are a few cases where the Premier belted the challenging team which I believe is what is right and just. The 'Challenge' System was abandoned the year after Collingwood won four Premierships cups in a row. The last two of them by 'challenge'. It was an unfair system which benefitted wealthier clubs who could bring in and pay players for the finals series. My feeling is that all of the 'Challenge Era' wins should be wiped from the records. And the original Premierships be counted for the teams who had them effectively stolen. But, no one would ever consider this as the threemost powerful clubs in the AFL, Resending, Carlton and Collingwood share the record of 16 Premierships.....they'd find themselves knocked off their perch if their 'stolen' Premierships were removed. In fact, looking at the data Carlton would move to the top of the leaderboard with 18 Premierships.

Being back the "Bengals" spelled out helmet. That was Paul Brown all the way sticking it to Cleveland. He had a prototype striped helmet back in 1967. Didn't look as distinct but the idea was there
The fact that they felt the need to write "BROWNS" anywhere possible on the uniforms is still quite incredible to me. They really went out of their way to warn you that you're not watching the Bengals. Change station now, you have been warned.
I am a life king Jets fan. Here are my opinions on the Jets jerseys. I am leaving out the Titans so this is as soon as they become the Jets. The Jets 1963-1978 jersey are iconic because they won the Super Bowl in it, and well, Joe Namath. I like the airplane logo on the 1963 helmets, but the white logo with the green writing on the 1964 helmet was weird and unlegible on the white helmet base, and I’m glad they inverted the green and white on the logo that season. The 1978-1989 jersey are the best, undoubtedly. The green helmeted 1990-1997 jersey were okay, there wasn’t any need to add black borders around the lettering and numbers of the 1978-1989 jersey, but it made the uniforms pop, I guess. The 1998-2018 jerseys were great. I like the return to the Super Bowl 3 era of jersey. It’s the jersey that I grew up with. I, unlike many, liked the Jets’ 2009 New York Titans throwback uniforms. The blue and the gold were awesome, and it the thing was it was only worn a few times. That wasn’t the jersey that they wore to the conference championship, but it was an occasional jersey, and I liked the return to the classic pre-Jets era of the football team. The color rush were horrible. I was at the game, and they were horrible. The current jerseys are disgusting. The font and overall design make it look like a mix of and Atlanta Falcons and Philadelphia Eagles jersey. There was no reason to change the jerseys. They were fine the way they were. The green helmet is abysmal. The font of the 1998 logo for the word Jets should not have been used. They should have went back to the 1978 logo if they used a green helmet. The black jerseys are unnecessary. The Jets are Gang Green, not Gang Black. They fixed this issue slightly when they introduced the black helmets for the black jerseys. Now the Jets throwback jersey from this past season. I like it, but they should not have used white. They should have made it a green jersey. I was at the two games they wore the jersey, and after seeing the Jets not wear their green jersey at home the entirety of the 2022 season, I was mad that I had to see the Bills week one wearing blue and red in the Meadowlands, because of the white throwbacks. Same with the Chiefs week four. Sure we beat the Bills in week one at home, in the most thrilling way possible, but I wish it happened in the home green, and not the away white. And that’s all I have to say about that.

They have to change the rule about only wearing alternate helmets with alternate jerseys - The saints only being able to wear black helmets with their all white uniforms
As a Seahawks fan, I know all of us want to go back to our throwback colors. The Navy/Neon worked well for it's time, and I still like them but neon is outdated and the modern-classic is in. I don't necessarily want the exact throwback design but at least the colors. For the last 2 years or so, I've only bought throwback merch of theirs because it just looks so much better to wear in today's fashion.
... for its* time (it's = it is) and the throwback unis would be so much better with the new logo. The eye of the original Seahawk looks too human. Can't help but like the Action Green alternates.
Well done clip. I enjoyed it thanks. Not a Chargers or Bengals fan but you, like them, nailed it. Classic jerseys are always just better I guess. Look at the Chiefs, Raiders, Steelers, Packers, Vikings, 49ers (not the black), Bears (not orange, it belongs to Tampa & Denver) but you get my drift. Bringing in the second shell and not being lazy was a smart move for the league. Eagles, Buccaneers, Falcons, & Texans we're looking at you. Colts & Cardinals not so much.

Here's my uniform take: A gradient colour design on the jersey is fine, just as long as the numbers are one solid colour. Jersey numbers with gradient colours are unnecessarily difficult to read on TV.
Color Rush was a *frustrating* era more than anything. So many teams had wasted designs (Packers, Ravens, Colts) that weren't different enough to justify their existence, but then you get the Seahawks in blinding neon green (which was PERFECT for the Seattle fan base and you can't convince me otherwise). What Nike are doing now is what they should have done from the start (different strategies for different teams). Throwbacks are perfect for teams like Seattle and Philly with throwback colors, but Indy's base design is so simple and classic that you need to try something else (the black helmets were a start, but they should try a mostly black design). Heck, now Color Rush can come back as new jersey color options that didn't exist before. Would the Packers look *good* in yellow jerseys? Probably not, but you know they'd sell in Green Bay. The Saints and 49ers feature a lot of gold, so why don't they try gold jersey options? Let teams control up to 3 primary pants and jerseys (home/away/alt). This covers the teams that have black and gray alternates and provides several mix-and-match combos. Then, you let Nike do ONE experimental uniform design just to try something new and see what it looks like. The only real design note would be: make something that does NOT exist in the team's primary options. Nike don't have to hit on all of these experiments. They just need to hit on a few options that reach "this should be a standard jersey" status to keep uniform designs fresh.
For years I've wanted the cardinals to do throwbacks uniforms. White jerseys with the state flag on the sleeve and red pants like they had in the 90s. Hopefully with the recent resurgence for nostalgic looks they will finally do it sometime soon.
That was a downgrade from what they wore when they moved here from St. Louis. Though subtle, the black trim around the numbers on the white jersey, the striping on the sleeve and black stripe, removed from the pants in 95, we're much better
All the Steelers need to do is bring back the block numbers and their uniforms will be perfect. Also dolphins please please bring back the classics. They kook so good everytime.
7:21 Funny story about those socks-those were intended for basketball. Football had their own design in the form of a V shaped pattern on the back, which I always loved (and still have!). That said, both designs are iconic to the era.
The Seahawks throwbacks you had on your initial video with DK Metcalf I have to admit are pretty fire. I don't think the original ones look nearly as good as the throwbacks today because these are properly using the vibrant color scheme NFL teams seem to enjoy nowadays. I would easily take them over the full green units they use every year it seems?
I like the new Cardinals all white uniforms. It reminds me of my early days as a fan during the mid 70's and the Cardiac Cards. The all white unis of the time were fresh and these harken back to that. The all red, not so much. And don't get me started on the all black uniforms.
totally agree on those Bills Titans Falcons Bengals uniforms of the early 2000s. They were trying way too hard. This whole video just reaffirms that unis before the 2000s were far superior and thats why all these teams are reimagining their throwbacks today

An NFL Fan since 1989. I'm a New York Giants Fan. The Uniforms over time have changed so dramatically. The Wild West of The NFL in the Late 80s, Early Mid to Late 90s. Reebok 2001 - 2011 were great as well. Nike 2012 - Current, Credible Jersey Quality. G III and Mitchell & Ness are Honorable Mentions.
The Giants had cool uniforms in the late 70s, white stripes in the so you could actually see the red center strips, a cool sleeve striping pattern and, most importantly, blue pants with the white jersey

Agreed though they added some color to the otherwise sucky Ravens uniforms.
The 'Swindle Era' was also used in the Aussie Rules competition in Victoria(most states had their own leagues back in the day and there wasn't a truly national competition) back in the early 1898 through to 1930. During this period the team who held the top position on the ladder(rankings) at the end of the regular season(they were called the minor premier) could challenge the winner of the finals series, the Premiers, to a 'Challenge Match' if the minor premier had been knocked out of the finals series(play offs) early. So you had teams who had played maybe two less games challenge the true champions to match the week after they'd won the Grand Final and celebrated the win, most likely all week. The Minor Premiers were allowed to bring in players from other teams just for this one game. This is why there's a heap of players back in this era' who only played finals, and regular season matches, for certain teams. Usually the minor premier were more rested and chock full of top tier players from other clubs and they'd roll the true Premierships team in this 'challenge' match. There are a few cases where the Premier belted the challenging team which I believe is what is right and just. The 'Challenge' System was abandoned the year after Collingwood won four Premierships cups in a row. The last two of them by 'challenge'. It was an unfair system which benefitted wealthier clubs who could bring in and pay players for the finals series. My feeling is that all of the 'Challenge Era' wins should be wiped from the records. And the original Premierships be counted for the teams who had them effectively stolen. But, no one would ever consider this as the threemost powerful clubs in the AFL, Resending, Carlton and Collingwood share the record of 16 Premierships.....they'd find themselves knocked off their perch if their 'stolen' Premierships were removed. In fact, looking at the data Carlton would move to the top of the leaderboard with 18 Premierships.
The 49ers from the early 70s to 1995 were perfect, and I'm glad they came back in 2009.

Being back the "Bengals" spelled out helmet. That was Paul Brown all the way sticking it to Cleveland. He had a prototype striped helmet back in 1967. Didn't look as distinct but the idea was there
The fact that they felt the need to write "BROWNS" anywhere possible on the uniforms is still quite incredible to me. They really went out of their way to warn you that you're not watching the Bengals. Change station now, you have been warned.
The Browns should rename themselves and use their alternate bulldog logo as their primary one.
I am a life king Jets fan. Here are my opinions on the Jets jerseys. I am leaving out the Titans so this is as soon as they become the Jets.
The Jets 1963-1978 jersey are iconic because they won the Super Bowl in it, and well, Joe Namath. I like the airplane logo on the 1963 helmets, but the white logo with the green writing on the 1964 helmet was weird and unlegible on the white helmet base, and I’m glad they inverted the green and white on the logo that season. The 1978-1989 jersey are the best, undoubtedly. The green helmeted 1990-1997 jersey were okay, there wasn’t any need to add black borders around the lettering and numbers of the 1978-1989 jersey, but it made the uniforms pop, I guess. The 1998-2018 jerseys were great. I like the return to the Super Bowl 3 era of jersey. It’s the jersey that I grew up with. I, unlike many, liked the Jets’ 2009 New York Titans throwback uniforms. The blue and the gold were awesome, and it the thing was it was only worn a few times. That wasn’t the jersey that they wore to the conference championship, but it was an occasional jersey, and I liked the return to the classic pre-Jets era of the football team. The color rush were horrible. I was at the game, and they were horrible. The current jerseys are disgusting. The font and overall design make it look like a mix of and Atlanta Falcons and Philadelphia Eagles jersey. There was no reason to change the jerseys. They were fine the way they were. The green helmet is abysmal. The font of the 1998 logo for the word Jets should not have been used. They should have went back to the 1978 logo if they used a green helmet. The black jerseys are unnecessary. The Jets are Gang Green, not Gang Black. They fixed this issue slightly when they introduced the black helmets for the black jerseys. Now the Jets throwback jersey from this past season. I like it, but they should not have used white. They should have made it a green jersey. I was at the two games they wore the jersey, and after seeing the Jets not wear their green jersey at home the entirety of the 2022 season, I was mad that I had to see the Bills week one wearing blue and red in the Meadowlands, because of the white throwbacks. Same with the Chiefs week four. Sure we beat the Bills in week one at home, in the most thrilling way possible, but I wish it happened in the home green, and not the away white.
And that’s all I have to say about that.

As a Seahawks fan, I know all of us want to go back to our throwback colors. The Navy/Neon worked well for it's time, and I still like them but neon is outdated and the modern-classic is in. I don't necessarily want the exact throwback design but at least the colors. For the last 2 years or so, I've only bought throwback merch of theirs because it just looks so much better to wear in today's fashion.
90's Seahawk uniforms are cool. I also like the design from around our first Super Bowl.

Well done clip. I enjoyed it thanks. Not a Chargers or Bengals fan but you, like them, nailed it. Classic jerseys are always just better I guess. Look at the Chiefs, Raiders, Steelers, Packers, Vikings, 49ers (not the black), Bears (not orange, it belongs to Tampa & Denver) but you get my drift. Bringing in the second shell and not being lazy was a smart move for the league. Eagles, Buccaneers, Falcons, & Texans we're looking at you. Colts & Cardinals not so much.

Here's my uniform take: A gradient colour design on the jersey is fine, just as long as the numbers are one solid colour. Jersey numbers with gradient colours are unnecessarily difficult to read on TV.
I disagree with having gradients on jerseys period, but I’m not gonna criticize you for having an opinion.
I'm waiting for a team to go wild and do a gradient that goes from left to right on the jersey 🤣

Color Rush was a *frustrating* era more than anything. So many teams had wasted designs (Packers, Ravens, Colts) that weren't different enough to justify their existence, but then you get the Seahawks in blinding neon green (which was PERFECT for the Seattle fan base and you can't convince me otherwise).
What Nike are doing now is what they should have done from the start (different strategies for different teams). Throwbacks are perfect for teams like Seattle and Philly with throwback colors, but Indy's base design is so simple and classic that you need to try something else (the black helmets were a start, but they should try a mostly black design). Heck, now Color Rush can come back as new jersey color options that didn't exist before. Would the Packers look *good* in yellow jerseys? Probably not, but you know they'd sell in Green Bay. The Saints and 49ers feature a lot of gold, so why don't they try gold jersey options?
Let teams control up to 3 primary pants and jerseys (home/away/alt). This covers the teams that have black and gray alternates and provides several mix-and-match combos. Then, you let Nike do ONE experimental uniform design just to try something new and see what it looks like. The only real design note would be: make something that does NOT exist in the team's primary options. Nike don't have to hit on all of these experiments. They just need to hit on a few options that reach "this should be a standard jersey" status to keep uniform designs fresh.

For years I've wanted the cardinals to do throwbacks uniforms. White jerseys with the state flag on the sleeve and red pants like they had in the 90s. Hopefully with the recent resurgence for nostalgic looks they will finally do it sometime soon.
That was a downgrade from what they wore when they moved here from St. Louis. Though subtle, the black trim around the numbers on the white jersey, the striping on the sleeve and black stripe, removed from the pants in 95, we're much better

7:21 Funny story about those socks-those were intended for basketball. Football had their own design in the form of a V shaped pattern on the back, which I always loved (and still have!).
That said, both designs are iconic to the era.

The Seahawks throwbacks you had on your initial video with DK Metcalf I have to admit are pretty fire. I don't think the original ones look nearly as good as the throwbacks today because these are properly using the vibrant color scheme NFL teams seem to enjoy nowadays. I would easily take them over the full green units they use every year it seems?

I like the new Cardinals all white uniforms. It reminds me of my early days as a fan during the mid 70's and the Cardiac Cards. The all white unis of the time were fresh and these harken back to that. The all red, not so much. And don't get me started on the all black uniforms.
I feel like one of the few people that really liked the 2000s Rams unis.
It was a fine uniform, but I like the 70's and 80's uniform for them more personally.

totally agree on those Bills Titans Falcons Bengals uniforms of the early 2000s. They were trying way too hard. This whole video just reaffirms that unis before the 2000s were far superior and thats why all these teams are reimagining their throwbacks today
