Little known fact: When Ray Guy, the Hall of Fame punter for the Oakland Raiders, first came into the league, Houston Oilers coach Bum Phillips was convinced that Guy had filled the footballs with helium. Phillips couldn't believe that someone could kick a football so high and with such incredible hang times. He had the footballs collected and sent to Rice University in Houston for testing, where it was determined that the footballs were filled with plain air!
If you over fill the balls with helium they actually become heavier then if you put the helium at a normal pressure, because more pressure means that the gas inside is more dense. The helium balls didn't have more hangtime because the were over filled, which caused them to not have such a great weight difference. The reason the went further anyway though was because they were under more pressure, which caused them decompress (essentially bounce) faster after the contact with the foot. The reason the balls didn't go further when you threw them is because the weight difference is probably not that great, and throwing doesn't use bouncing like kicking does. I don't know though, I'm not a science nerd. But I'm just guessing that's what happened.
Science nerd here. If he filled them to the same pressure then the helium ball will have less mass, following Avogadro's law. Since helium is an ideal gas, 1 mole of it will fill 22.4 L of space at STP, but it will be less dense. I teach chemistry at my college :)
Wow, what a complete load of BS! One thing you are correct about - you definitely are not a science nerd. What was the point of babbling BS forever only to later clarify that you have no idea what you are talking about?
Balloon Time Helium is only 78-83% Helium at the best. Its purposeful mixed with air because Helium is a scarce gas. I would love to see what 99% Helium from an He20 tank from a gas supplier could help these gentlemen achieve. Cool experiments guys. Thanks!
DID YOU GUYS KNOW?.....The league thought that former Raiders kicker,Ray Guy was using helium in his footballs...Because,he could hit the top of the Saints dome with a football ,and he always had the strongest leg in the game..He was the only punter to go number 1 in the draft(1973)....He was worth it,because ,he helped all those great Raider teams win ,during their heyday!
I was a kicker in college in the early 90s (yes I'm old) I had much better distance and accuracy without pads. Mind you, back then, they were much more cumbersome, so I have no idea how much of an impact they have today, but I'm willing to bet its still noticeable.

Fwiw I'm M-67 and surfed on in by accdt. This vid had me laughing my ass off, yet it was really interesting too. In the early 70's in high school my buds and I once did the high school announcements over the all-classes intercoms with helium voices. Of course, we hit the bong just prior to this. We could barely get thru these announcements....we were just crying and sucking for breath we were cracking up so hard. Was told the entire student body and teachers too fell out laughing as well. Cool memories. Lord take me back for just one day, please?
A factor not mentioned in this video is the pressure inside the footballs. Deestroying's comment at 8:12 that "these are kind of fat to throw" suggests that the helium-filled footballs were over-pressured compared to the air-filled footballs. As another experiment, they could fill footballs with regular air at different measured pressures and check for distance with kicking and passing. Higher pressure is not always better, at least for passing-receiving. Remember "Deflategate": en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deflategate In "Mythbusters" Season 4, Epsiode 8 ("total" episode 47, Feb. 1, 2006), they tested footballs filled with 13 psi of air and then with 13 psi of helium. The distance with helium was essentially the same (slightly shorter) than the distance with air: ua-cam.com/video/2PLj5H5unUU/v-deo.html
Could have more to do with the density of helium allowing more compression and expansion as you kick the ball, would explain why throws don't see much of a difference but kicks go further in the same hang time....
Helium atoms are lighter than "air" but they're also a LOT smaller than the average air molecule. So they would deflate a lot quicker than balls filled with air. So you would, unfortunately, need a helium tank on the sideline all game long to make sure you're up to the league's pressure standard. (Wouldn't wanna have to turn in your phone in an investigation 😉 )
Physics Behind this: Since Force = mass * acceleration, and lets say that “Hang-time” is pretty consistent and kicks with a constant force every time, considering that the football is filled with helium which is considerably lighter than the oxygen thats in regular footballs, 4 grams/mol He < 16 grams/mol O2, this would effectively make the football much lighter than it should be. Now since we know that force is constant and the mass of the football decreased, we must have a larger acceleration to make up for the smaller mass in order for it to equal the force (smaller thing move faster) Math Visualization so you dont get confused: Force of “Hang-time”’s kicks = 69N Mass of football with oxygen = .460 kilograms F = ma 69= .460 * a a = 150 m/s^2 And football with helium = .420 grams 69 = .420 * a a = 164.3 m/s^2 So in conclusion, yes this is a effective way to impress your crush in a ball kicking competition
@@kevinrodriguez5613 just looked it up, and the majority of the atmoshpere is nitrogen at 70 percent while oxygen is 20, and nitrogen is lighter than oxygen anyway so the ball would probably go father than your calculations

Yo this was interesting! Good vid bro
Imagine if the NFL really did start doing this lol
Physics Behind this:
Since Force = mass * acceleration, and lets say that “Hang-time” is pretty consistent and kicks with a constant force every time, considering that the football is filled with helium which is considerably lighter than the oxygen thats in regular footballs, 4 grams/mol He < 16 grams/mol O2, this would effectively make the football much lighter than it should be.
Now since we know that force is constant and the mass of the football decreased, we must have a larger acceleration to make up for the smaller mass in order for it to equal the force (smaller thing move faster)
Math Visualization so you dont get confused:
Force of “Hang-time”’s kicks = 69N
Mass of football with oxygen = .460 kilograms
F = ma
69= .460 * a
a = 150 m/s^2
And football with helium = .420 grams
69 = .420 * a
a = 164.3 m/s^2
So in conclusion, yes this is a effective way to impress your crush in a ball kicking competition
