My mum and dad owned about a gazillion art history books about architecture, old italian masters etc. I vividly remember sitting on my dad's lap (being about 2) and him making up stories while we looked at the pictures. That's probably my first book related memory! We also had library cards and used them frequently. My mum is a Waldorf teacher so the love for books was passed on to me naturally :)

As children both my sister and I had a multitude of books, comics and magazines in the house. Under our staircase we had two bookcase brimming with picture books, annuals, information books, short story collections, activity books, cookery books, puzzle books, choose your own adventure books, chapter books etc. Reading was encouraged by both my parents! However neither of my parents read very much for themselves. My mum would read to us all the time when we were tiny and she would read a Catherine Cookson every now and again, and Dad would read
the newspaper but that's it. I still read everyday. My sister doesn't. Now they have more time both my parents always have a book on the go. They do not have many books at home choosing to facilitate their local library, but now reading everyday too.

I remember one night in 2012, I was searching for something on UA-cam and then stumbled upon your channel, and was immediately hooked!. I binged watched all your video's until the early morning and even ordered some of your recommended books from Amazon. The first book I ordered was ' Letter to D', because you spoke so passionately about it. (and yes it made me cry too). YOU were my first BookTuber I subscribed to, and YOU will always remain my favourite BookTuber, because YOU were the one who got me back into reading, which I had always loved as a child but somewhere stopped when I became an adult. I've never looked back since that night. I am now an avid reader, with always a book on the go. Thanks Lesley. x

I’m like you, most of my friends and family are readers but not to the extent that my booktube friends read. But it’s so special to have people to discuss books with in real life. Recently a group of my friends and I just read a book about the Donner party and after that we went Donner lake to snowshoe and talk about the book. Such a fun experience and I hope people in the booktube community initiate group reads with friends because it can be so rewarding and amazing to see how the people you love analyze and react to books! Nonfiction group reads are maybe a good way to get non readers involved. Great discussion topic :)

I don't really have any friends who read. I always liked reading but I think what really set my love for reading off was when a friend of mine gifted me his extra copy of The Hostile Hospital in the 3rd grade. I was hooked on the series of unfortunate events after that.

My circle of reading friends and family is probably 50/50. I used to read much more than I have of late, but I probably read more than most of the others who read anyway. My earliest memories are of loving books and reading, so I think I was just born with this love. I believe I started reading for real in kindergarten but I can’t think of a particular instance that made me fall in love with books. It just always seemed to be there. Great topic, and I love all your videos!

My mother passed on to me her passion for books. My grandmother died almost 7 years ago, but she was an avid reader as well. My house is full of books, I learned to read when I was 4 years old and I have never stopped enjoying books. :) I don't buy books any more because there is literally no space for them at my house, so now I read those from the public library.

    What an excellent topic!
I host a book club every month. This is made up of a bunch of writers and readers who are in the 18-24 year old set, plus my 40 year old self! We are all friends and see each other weekly outside of book club and so we usually end up talking books authors regularly. One of my best friends is quite bookish as well, and we inspire one another on a regular basis.
I’m a married mother of two children, and we are all readers. Well, my toddler loves books in her own way; she loves to take them off the shelf and put them in stacks so she can climb up higher on the book shelf!
The most awesome thing while growing up is that my best friend and I would go to each other’s houses just to sit and read silently! We had our snacks, a blanket, and a book, and we were good. Talk about low maintenance!

My experience is a lot like yours, I think. I grew up in a house full of books and in a family in which all of my closest family members were readers in some way. Some preferred nonfiction, others fiction, but most of the closest people around me enjoyed and valued reading in some way. We’ve always had a lot of librarians among our family and friends as well. Now, my husband is definitely a reader like I am, and many of our closest family and friends still are. As far as other people in our lives, like my in-laws and other acquaintances, it varies. I’ve certainly known plenty of people who pretty much never open a book.

I’m the only reader in my family, but my father who past away was an avid reader and writer. I developed my love of books as a small child watching my dad read & wanting to emulate him I did the same. I like to think that I carry-on his tradition of reading in my family. 💙

I have one or two IRL friends that are serious readers! We talk about books all the time, and I love having someone IRL to talk with about books. I love BookTube, but there's something really special about sitting down with a real person in front of you and sharing your fave books with them.
    Happy Reading!

When I was really young I always wanted to learn to read and I would read all day, everyday! As I grew older, my grandma introduced me and my family into the Twilight movies, but only me, my sister and mom really enjoyed it. But after watching Twilight, I wanted to read the books, so I started off small, and now I’m reading all the time and writing my own ideas too! But deep down, I think my mom inspired my literary-self by reading picture books to me and my siblings.

I'm the only reader in my family... my dad reads the newspaper every morning, my mom reads her facebook newsfeed... but other than that I'm alone. I've always loved books and I can't really remember what made me pick them up. I think as a teeny tiny child I just loved stories and books have stories lol

My mom has always been a reader, I always remember as a kid seeing a book on her bedside table and my sisters and I inherited the habit. Although oddly I don’t remember any bookshelves in our house. I guess we usually had library books. We lived next door to our school so we always had books from that library and the neighborhood library. We didn’t have a lot of money growing up so I didn’t often buy books I guess. Now that I’m grown up I’m kind of a book hoarder and go to Barnes and noble for kicks but I kind of miss the library days. I should start going again.

Thank you for posting this question. I discovered books at the age of 13 or 14 and my family wasn´t a too much into books. I mean, they had books, but they didn´t read them. So it was kind of a struggle for me. I had insecurities about my college major, and my career paths as a result of that.
Eventually, I became more and more interested in literature and I majored in Modern Language. I enjoyed being among my college friends and my professors. They were such an inspiration that I became a teacher. Now that I am older I am still a bit of an outcast. I am not part of any group that reads. I am pretty much the person who owns the most books in my family and I have come to realize that is the way I want to live.

I love that you brought up the fact that lack of books =/= not a reader. I personally don't own a lot of becomes because I am not financially capable of doing so though I consider myself a lover of reading.
My siblings and I are all readers even though our parents do not read a lot. I think I began reading when I went to my school's library for the first time. It was a self-discovery for me, and since then, I *have* met a few readers who have been a huge part of my reading journey. I began going to music lessons at the age of twelve and my teacher was a HUGE reader. He lent me books to read and stays one of my reading buddy till today.

I don't think anyone is quite as avid of a reader as I am, but I grew up around books as well, and my mom and I love to talk about what books we're reading. My dad reads more history and scholarly stuff, and my brother more fantasy things or outdoorsy magazines. My best friend reads, but more contemporary/new adult, but there's a bit of overlap that we can discuss. And I work in a bookish environment so I get to discuss books with coworkers as well. :) None of the guys I've dated have been very bookish, it is my dream to find someone who loves to read as much as me!

I find it really striking to think about the lack of books in a home. I have a couple of bookshelves in my room that are overflowing and my dad has a ton of books in our basement and in this one storage closet he uses for other hobbies as well. However we don’t have books in our main living spaces and I actually find that very sad upon reflection. I also spend a lot of time at my cousin’s house and I remember going down to the basement to look for something and seeing a bookshelf that was full of random stuff and had about 10 books on it (including a bible). I remember realizing “wow these are the only books my cousin and her husband own”. It made me think about how the person I marry must have lots of books lol. Books make spaces so cozy. I cannot wait until I have my own home with a living room full of bookshelves.

Growing up my family was always big into books. I'd say my mum and two of my three sisters are as big readers as I am (though our tastes all vary with some overlap!) while the rest of my family are occasional readers. My social group is pretty mixed in terms of readers/not-often-a-reader, but I don't think I've maintained friendships with anyone who actively hates reading :P We moved around a lot in my childhood because of the military but we've usually been able to move most of our books with us (they are - as one might guess - kind of heavy to lug around)!

I remember always reading. I think as kid I enjoyed reading even in school, even when the teacher read to us, or family member. But it wasn't until 6th grade (11-12) but more so 7th grade (12-13) that I heavily started becoming avid reader and fell more in love with reading. The rest is history.

  • @himanijaggi6527

As a kid, the only reason me and my brother were encouraged to read was as a vocabulary building exercise. Other than that, our first priority was our studies and homework and more self-study, and reading was allowed only if it didn't interfere with our studies. As a result, we never developed a love for reading as kids, even though my dad was very much into poetry and my mom was an avid reader (even though she only read Sidney Sheldon and the likes). When I had to appear for competitive exams, my single biggest weak point was English language. Even so, i somehow managed to clear my law school entrance. It was when I finally joined law school, I met people who were so well -read, and initially, purely due to fear of being exposed as an ignorant person, I started reading. Since then, my personality has changed drastically, and I have come to enjoy reading for the pure pleasure of it. A few books were instrumental in bringing about this change. I have networked with quite a few people over our mutual love for book (even if our tastes vary). However, in a lot of cases, I still struggle with getting close to people who are not readers, mainly because I don't know how to start the conversation.

I started reading in middle school getting books from the book mobile at school. I grew up in a home of non readers. I remember my mom telling me to go outside, not stay couped up in the house lol. Once I had children I read to them everyday. My son reads a lot, my daughter so not much anymore as she has a toddler and newborn. I don't know anyone who reads, not a woe is me, just a fact. But I read 10 to 15 books a month and have all my you tube friends!

I only have two friends that also read books, but it is not the same type of reading. I read a lot of books and on a regular basis while, in their case, it doesn't really get to 5 or 10 books a year. It's more of that occasional reading (and more so during the summer holiday) and not so much as a regular activity. Although my mother doesn't read a lot today, we still talk about books quite often, it's interesting, especially books she remembers reading in the past.

I’m the anomaly. My friends aren’t readers, my wife’s not a reader and my family growing up never read. I happened to be blessed in my freshman year of high school, I was 14, to have an English teacher that required all her students to read two books a quarter and then take a book test on them. I thought she was crazy but I didn’t want to fail so I asked a friend for a recommendation for something that wasn’t too painful. She recommended a book she read a while back called Henry Potter or something like that. Eventually I found out it was Harry Potter and gave it a try even though I’d never heard of it. For time reference the first four books were already published at this time and I’d never heard of them. Well long story short I loved it obviously and haven’t stopped reading since. Sometimes I reflect on how different my life would be if I hadn’t been put in that English class or if I’d pick something else up.

I'm surrounded by people who enjoy reading, but I have more time then they do. For the longest time, I was unemployed, and even now that I am employed my schedule isn't set and is sporadic, so I still have plenty of time. I'm jealous that sometimes some book tubers have siblings, spouses, and parents who share their passion and will be booktube videos and such with them. I am grateful that they have an appreciation for it at least and will buy me books and take me to the bookstore.

I come from a family of readers but we all read different things. When i was a kid we would drive to the "big library" in the city and come out with over 75 books. Now I am the biggest reader in my social circle but most of my friends are still readers. I actually just started a reading project with one of my friends where we read and annotate a play together. We met in a Modernism class in our first semester in college and we have been talking about books ever since.

i know NO ONE who reads, my dad thinks reading is a stupid waste of time and energy, he doesn't want to think if he doesn't have to, mom read a bit when she was younger but by that i mean like 5 or 6 books by the age of 30, no one in my extended family really reads either, i have an aunt through marriage that reads really crappy mass market trade paperbacks, like not even the popular ones
i'm not even entirely sure how i started reading, i mean i had picture books as i kid that my family would read to me, i liked the book fairs at school, i didn't really read much in elementary school though, i got into the goosebumps phase when my neighborhood friend started reading them and i read maybe 2 or 3 of those, my first proper adult book was a biography of walt disney i checked out from the middle school library and it was so difficult for me to read, i remember setting in the bathroom floor with my fingers in my ears bc i couldn't concentrate lol but i finished it! and i was so proud! after that i think it was the internet that got me back into reading probably, i credit you with being the inspiration for reading my first classic and i've never looked back since then ☺️

I started reading/listening The Wheel of Time in October for "Sober October" I have probably only read 30+ books my entire life and I just turned 30. Over the course of the last 6 months I have asked lots of friends and coworkers what they read and found that a lot of people around me just don't read that often. I definitely want to read more though! I have a goal of 50 books this year and I've finished 8 so far all of which are pretty big books :)
I'm far better with audiobooks though! I can listen to a book in 10-30 hours while I do things instead of falling asleep reading at a snails pace

What a great discussion. My parents and brother were never large readers but my parents made sure that I had access to books at the library or they bought me books. So since I was young, I was known to love reading in my family and always carried a book with me even when many didn't. Now, some of my cousins do read but still very different tastes but I always get excited when they come to talk about a book because I love hearing what people are enjoying. I'm still the go to for recommendations among friends and family because they know i'm so in tune with what's happening in the publishing world, so even if I haven't read something I can recommend them something I've heard about on twitter, goodreads or etc if they're looking for a specific genre or such. It's been fun to become part of book clubs in the past year because now I can share this passion with more people and it gets me thinking about a certain book in ways that I might not have hearing people's thoughts and connections IRL. :]

My dad taught me and my sister how to read. I remember there being books basically everywhere in my house growing up. We had shelves in our room, the living room, my parents room, and the attic was filled with boxes and boxes of my dads old sci fi/fantasy books in individual plastic bags. Both my dad and my sister are still huge readers and they are both speed readers which is something I don't understand lol. My mom always said she didn't like reading and I can't remember ever seeing her actually reading anything. I have some friends at work that are big readers as well and thankfully they read a lot of nonfiction so we can talk about the books they pick up. But I haven't found anyone in my personal life that loves horror as much as I do which is a bummer, lol. I'm super happy that I have family members that read a ton and can talk to them about books.

My friends for the most part read every once in a while and they like reading, but they have other things they like to do more and make time for.

Growing up we had a substantial selection of children's books, but the household I grew up in has little to no adult literature. My parents do both read for pleasure, but they almost exclusively get books from the library. They also read far less than I do. I had one friend growing up whose house was a book haven. Her mother was a high school English teacher and almost every room of the house (except the kitchen) was lined with books... everything from classics, contemporary lit, nonfiction, books about knitting and quilting, to literary criticism. I always felt so at home there. Unfortunately, none of my current real life friends read, or at least none of them seem to want to discuss reading.

I had no books at home when I was younger, no body in my family used to read, and it was not something that I particulary liked doing. BUT, when I went to high school, I met this girl who was just obsessed about books, all kind of YA books and I remember she used to make me read the first chapter of the books she was reading(the name of the wind, that later became one of my favorites books).
One day somebody bought a house and there was this giantic collection of books that they were just about to throw away and it ended in my house. These are the only books that I own, but not particulary of my taste, so I often find myself in the local library hiring them. Its quite convenient.
Also, in this high school that i went, they have half an hour every day that is just for reading, so you can bring you own book or get one from the library, whatever you want to read.
Later, in Med School my circle of friends read a lot, even though not the same kind of books, one is more philosopher, one is more in YA, some read a lot of science fiction but they read a lot. In Barcelona on St. Jordi we share books, on 31st Dec we do this hidden friend kind of game and exchange books, so I was a non reader till 17 and in three years I have became an avid reader.
    Thanks for your videos!!

In my family you just read, my parents always read in the morning over coffee. That is probably the most present memory I have of them as it was just every day. Since most of my close friends now come from my literature studies all of them read. Yet I am still the one reading the most varied and weird books. I've gotten used to not really being able to really talk about books with IRL people as I do online. But that is okay. When it comes to people who don't read at all, I can never understand. When I was teaching I met people like that every now and then, and I just couldn't fathom how, lol.

Sure but most people I know IRL or online don't read the same books I read. I've learned to tone down my excitement around people who don't care about the things I'm excited about.

I've done that as well, tone down the excitement and held back on wanting to talk non-stop. But it does become disheartening when you can't share

I was lucky enough to have a bunch of nerds in my family lol whats interesting is that the early generation would read encyclopedias for fun hahaha the second generation read but not as much and now the third generation picked it back up. Naturally. Which is crazy to me. My little causins just started reading, all of them. I have a big family, my uncles and aunts are 8 all together, they all had kids and thise kids had kids, I am part of the second generation. I stared reading because of my mom and brother. My sister now after years of saying she does not like reading started reading science stuff none the less for me thats a big deal. Thanks for the conversation very cool!

I'm from Indonesia and reading isn't really a prominent culture there but I'm very fortunate to have a family that praise books! The only thing that I buy that my parents never complaint on is books and I buy lots lots of books lol bcs they completely understand the obsession - they themselves can lose control in bookshop as well. In fact, my love of reading was planted very early on by my mom who always read me winnie the pooh books and sort of forced me to read the 1st harry potter when i was 6. My dad has his working room filled with books that I'm not sure if he had read all of them or not... The only person in my family that just can't read books is my brother and up to this day, we're still trying to shove him books to read hahahah.
As for my friends, not a lot of them is as avid reader as myself, so for those who are, I always got so excited to engage myself with them and we're constantly recommend each others books we love and borrowing books from one another. There's nothing like finding an offline friend that can have a wholesome conversation about books with you!!!

I have one friend I can think of who reads in the same way I do when they have time, but just different books then I do. But no one in my friends circle, family circle, don't really read much. Not like I do. I'm the friend whose an avid reader. I'm the anomaly. Which makes it frustrating, because I wish half of the people here were around where I live (Currently Leeds, England). I would love to have people I could physically talk to, go to the Public Library with and discuss books in depth.

oh my this happens to me all the time... not only in high school or university, even now when i go to someone's house and there are no books at all, not even one... I am like... where are the books? do the keep them in the closet? in the bathroom? it's impossible they don't own books (I mean even if you have few money, just one!)! I am the daughter of two teachers and we had books everywhere in the house. My partner grew up in a family where nobody had the chance to get a proper education and nobody read...when we first met he owned like 3 books...now he reads, he's not a great reader,he reads like 5 books a year and I read about 50 (only because I work full time till 7.30 pm, otherwise I'd read more) but he reads...

Hi I have lived in the UK for 10 years ( work) , 5 years ( studies) in Germany but I am from France and unfortunately no one reads books in my entourage. They will read news papers, or work related things (finance in our case) and read may be one or 2 books a year which is non fiction. They ll know their classics as most of them used to read as a teenagers.
So i m an anomaly and booktube was a great discovery for me.
I started to read massively when I was 6 just because my parents did not allow me to watch TV ...=) the end result is that at 37 I ve been a massive reader and I do not own a TV =)

My parents are big readers. Somehow, my brother isn't. It's shocking to the rest of us. 😀 Socially, it's mixed. Some people I am close with love to read, and for others it's just not a thing.

Love your channel. Would you be interested in being a beta reader for a chapter of a middle grade fantasy/steampunk novel? You probably get a lot of requests so I understand if you can't.
