Thanks for the reminder, I gotta get painting. I’ll use some of that surround you shared. I do hand spray all my trees every morning around 5 AM and sometimes in the evening. Trying to keep them cool. Stay hydrated 🍺
I spray once a day when I'm available, around noon. I would like to do an automation system but the problem is doing all this work for just a couple days a year. It seems to be sustained this time... Stay hydrated! Thanks for watching!

Doing experiments with Reeds with shade cloth Vs none. Overall Reed tolerates heat very well. When under the cloth the new growth is about same but leaves grow larger when protected.
Good to be back, took a trip to Maui. Didn't see the avocado trees I wanted but family comes first. One of my Hass has large leaves with a more shady area so it makes sense.
Our Gwen, the same age as your's flowered , and has dropped all its fruit, so a lot depends on microclimate, and other factors. I'm glad I've a 6 year old Hass, it has many good attribures, but now that Lamb, GEM, Esther are more available....they are better trees and more productive too. And yes, Pinkerton, here in our location is better than Hass. I've also found that LOTS of deep mulch over the entire orchard floor helps a lot during our high heat. Thanks for all the great videos
That's a bummer on the Gwen, microclimate totally makes a difference. My Pinkerton on the other hand had some fruit and dropped it all but it is still a little baby. Hass is excellent so you really can't go wrong. Hang in there, glad you got fruit though...

Although I have extra Hass that wasn't planned, I'm not complaining. It is a excellent variety. It is handling the heat well, others not so much. Thanks for watching and enjoy your videos too....

Sheesh you've been hot. We've had some really hot temps too but haven't gotten into the 100's yet. The one thing we got going that helps our trees from not getting fried is our humidity. Nice tips on keeping your trees safe. Great avocado tree deals at Costco there. No such luck here lol
We have to brave the heat. You guys have to brave the cold temps in the winter time. I love Costco. It's the best
Great video thanks for the advice painted my new trees last night. I was at Laguna Hills Nursery yesterday very very good selection of 5-gallon trees from Brokaw mostly on zutanto seedly except the reed is on dusa seven. I now have five trees and 7 seedlings to graft onto it's been amazing journey already thanks for all the great info
How much were they selling the 5 gallons at Laguna Hills nursery?

I put 40% shade cloth over my young trees. Lifesaver
Very nice 40% is about the perfect amount. I used to shade my trees when they were smaller. It's a lot more difficult now that they're bigger. Good luck and thanks for watching!
Hey REM!! Dig the teal paint. Your Gwen is loaded, and your JB has really shot up. All your trees look good. Thanks for the video. It reminded me to get off my butt and get my trees ready for the heat. I painted some of my new trees, added more to the older trees that outgrew their first paint job, and I also put up shade cloth which will help. Like you, I'm not sure how beneficial the Surround was last year when I used it. I think the shade cloth worked the best for protecting the trees. But for larger trees where a shade cloth would not be practical, Surround might one layer of a multi-layed approach to protection. All this typing has made me thirsty. Time to go hydrate!!
I have a couple of trees that I probably put the shade cloth over (2nd Gwen and Green Gold) since they are still very young and small....maybe wait till this evening...

Yes, indoor Latex. Outdoor stuff usually has stuff added that you don't want. IV Organics is better but I'm cheap. Thanks for watching!

Nope, I know they used to have a lot of Gem but I didn't see anything but Hass.

Exposed green branches and the southern California Sun will burn avocado branches for sure. I mix, 40% to 50% indoor latex paint and water. The IV Organic product could be better but expensive so I just use what I have. Good luck!
Instead of painting your trees consider caging your trees and put shade cloth over wire cage also it might help keep your rodents or deer out away from tree.
