I threw my mango seed in my backyard just a few years ago (have basically a field as a backyard and because it's so green and bushy anything that can compost we just throw out there) and it's the largest tree in my backyard. In less than a month it grew pretty fast. I live in Jamaica so having at least 2 or 3 types of mango trees in your home is pretty normal. I have a Julie and an East Indian mango.

@@vidyashankara It is pretty sweet, like any original mango taste. Each season they produce a lot of fruit. So much that most times we just give them away.

I just tossed the mango seed while still in the husk into our compost pile along with other kitchen scraps . Never intended to grow a tree but it grew on its own!

@@TechplantChannel I had a similar epiphany a few years ago - we normally toss all our kitchen scraps in with the chickens as food/scratch for them, they eventually turn it all into compost. So one fallI had taken a wheelbarrowful of compost from their run to spread under my apple trees, and lo and behold, there was a sprouted mango mixed in there! So now I try to sprout them whenever I can, it's way fun.
Same thing happened with a moldy leek and a bell pepper core for me, but sadly neither can turn into trees

Here in Colombia, more specifically in the north coast, almost every home has a mango tree 😂 at home we used to have 3 Mango trees. We ate a lot of mangos, you guys can't imagine. Sometimes during the 🥭 season, there were a lot of mangos in the streets because they used to fall from the tree and people were just tired of eating them that pets or insects would eat them instead ☺️ Mango trees are definitely part of our culture in here

Great video. My wife is from Colombia and mangoes are literally everywhere but I live in Canada so it is very challenging to grow them. I currently have 3 small plants growing. I started them in soil but I will try your water system the next time. Fortunately I have plenty of space in my house and I converted one spare room into my tropical tree space with LED grow lights last winter and I got very good results. Growing trees from seeds takes time but it is richly rewarding. Cheers from Ottawa, Canada.

I grew mine direct in the pot and I got 7 sprouts from one seed I carefully separated them today I have 7 Apple mango trees in my farm from 1seed

hello Alice, I had grow mango plants from mango seed about two years ago and one seed sprout 4 plants they all die, can you please tell me which supermarkets did you purchase the mango from

@@Magicalworld_92 that's interesting because bmy mango seeds always sprout only 1 sprout. Interesting fact for you, if you get a couple of sprouts from only 1 seed, the biggest ones will have the same genetics as the mango you got the seed from, so if you liked the mango you ate that you got it from, cut off the smallest sprouts and you'll have a tree that produces the same fruit as far as I know. I hope it's not a myth

I've started a new project. Ate the mango. Washed the inner shell and carefully took the seed out. Planted it in the soil. Now its grown a bit with 4 browny leaves.

I'm retired and live in Thailand. I've planted the seeds by accident just by dumping them in a corner of the yard. Now I have several trees from seed coming up, plus a bunch of trees bought from garden shops. One of them, planted about 8 years ago started bearing fruit two years ago. First there were about 4 little round mangoes that didn't taste very good. The next year there were about 6 mangoes and the taste was better. This year the tree is full of mangoes, and like most trees around here grown from seed, the fruit is rather small, but sometimes delicious. One of the neighbors had a tree with almost a tangerine-mango taste. This year the fruit is slightly bigger, and I'm waiting for it to ripen more before I pick it to see what the fruit tastes like. My other trees from seed are still too young and won't be producing fruit for a few more years yet. The trees get tall fast over here.
I germinated a yellow mango seed a few months ago, using the paper towel and ziplock technique. Potted it, put it outside and watered it everyday. Until I got busy, missed watering it for 2 days and being in south Florida it was hot and died. Now I’m currently germinating a yellow mango and a florigon mango seed and going to keep it indoors for awhile before going outside. Like you said, they need lots of water and thanks for a great video. Subscribed.

I started the mango seed more than a month ago. Yhis method is way better than others. And i have some tips if any of you want to start this.
1. Choose a mango without many green spots. It may be fungus or it may be unripe. Try using either fully yellow or orange mangoes. And then take the seed out. Try not to damage the root thing.
2. Make sure to take the peel of. If your mango is yellow coloured. The peel or paper like thing would feel more like plastic and can be removed with a bit of hardwork. Doesnt matter if there is a little bit left. Drying out the seed decreases chances of mould
3. While placing the toothpick do not put them in the line that divides the seeds. This can cause delay in germination.
4. After you have it in water. Either add turmeric to the water or to the root portion of the seed.
5. After you see proper leaves. Add extremely little amounts of fertilizer.
6. Plant it in the soil. Water alot. And maybe graft it later.
Hope this helps. If your seed moulds then let it dry out a bit and maybe spray something that kills fungus.

ayyy i followed your video and it worked, normally just by planting the seed in soil used to take me about 1-2 months, but by your technique it took only 15 days for the plant to have 5 leaves :) thanks man!

@@rajnipable3947 wrap the seed in a lightly damp paper towel, keep moisture consistent and gives the seed a good start, but it needs to stay very clean else you can get rot problems. We always use the paper towel method ourselves but we've had lots of practice and have pretty good success with it now.

I remember when I was a kid I would just throw the seed in our garden and the three would just automatically grow. They wouldn’t grow full and tall obviously but we already had like 3 mango trees that would give us fruits every year

Cool hack for cleaning up mango seed husks: Brillo (steel wool) pads are GREAT for cleaning them perfectly, and they do not harm them at all! Try it! (The ones without detergent, of course.)

I threw some bruised mangoes in my compost. When I came to use my compost about 4 months later there was some healthy mangoes growing, this is in the UK to. Mature did a fine job.

I have found that removing the seed from the husk is totally unnecessary. The only advantage that I have found is that removing the seed from the husk and submerging it in water for 24 to 72 hours reduces the time to sprout by half. However, the resulting seedlings are not as vigorous as those left in their husks almost without exception.

I agree, last year, I had not watched any of these planting tutorials and just planted the seed with the husk in the pot, all of them sprouted within about 2 or 3 weeks and most of them have grown well till now.
How do you tell which side to plant it on? I have no idea about orientation with the husk on.
The first time I tried planting mango I just threw the seed with the husk on in my yard. I had no clue what i was doing but it grew a foot tall before dying. Another time I tried it, the seed grew from the bottom and couldn’t reach the top before it died.
With the husk it's disadvantage is that ur chances of germinating is low

the problem is that, mangoes are going to start growing when the tree reached its maximum height. That takes around 3 to 5 years. for that reason grafting the mango tree is necessary. To graft you need to shave a small part of the tree and on top of that spot you need to tie a black bag with a mix of organic fertilizer . A couple of days later a small branch will grow not far from the black bag. you need to cut the small branch and plant it into a garden pot with dirt and fertilizer. 3 months later you will transfer it to the ground. If everything goes right within 10-18 months the tree will grow 6-10 feet and mangoes will start growing. I know it may be long process but it takes only 12 months to happen with effort

Find a list of polyembryonic mangoes which can grow fruits in 2 to 4 years time

We followed your video, growing from seed in water, and it did so well that we planted it in a pot at about 5 weeks. It is a foot tall and has 9 leaves, and the last two are enormous! Just 4 days ago those newest leaves were teenie tiny and today they are 8” long and purple. Wish I could post a picture to this comment! We live in SWFL and it is thriving outside on our lanai. We got the mango from a co-worker and don’t know if this is a dwarf tree or regular one. Is there any way to figure this out at this stage?

I did mine before actually watching any videos and got lucky. I live in Eastern Ohio and just put the seed in my yard soil, which is heavyish clay loam. It sprouted fairly fast though believe it or not. Im so excited to see how it grows.
A coffee filter at the bottom will prevent the soil from leaking out.
good advice, I recently tried toiletpaper because I had a roll close by when transplanting lol.

or a zinc mesh which will make the roots grow upwards when they touch the mesh -> increasing more overall use of the soil

KaptainKarma Because the roots try to grow down they are tap roots and want to dig deep but the mesh will force them to spread horizontally instead of vertically

I just started to propagate a mango seed today! But I did a different method and want to know your opinion on it. I wrapped the seed in a warm damp paper towel and sealed it in a zip lock bag (I’ve seen other people do it).

Thank you for your video... I adapted getting the seed a little. It was easier for be to put on gloves, then snip the dented side edge... then can open with hands to get the seed. So much work...To be honest, our mango tree grew because of me carelessly throwing a just eaten from seed...After a few weeks, it grew and we just let it be. We already harvested from it a few times...

Just to share. I take my wire cutters and open a cut to take the husk apart. I also use my cordless with a very thin drill bit to go through the seed (works with avocados also just to allow the tooth pick indent) I also add a drop of peroxide in the water to kill germs.
Thank you this is the BEST video on prop ing a mango I have seen. I give up on the paper towel method and I have never been successful with it. I will give this way a shot and let you know how I do.

Maybe I’ll do a couple of these considering it’s mango season now. I might even try to do a bonsai tree with one of the sprouts. I have so many ideas!
Edit: I used a cherry tree sapling and put it into a small bonsai pot. It didn't grow much so I'm waiting until I can get a larger pot. It's super cute lol.

You could do a good large bonsai with a mango (think 2-4 foot bonsai) but the main issue with mangos is that defoliation doesn't make the small leaves that your typical tiny bonsai are known for. That being said don't give up and let us know how it goes. The larger bonsai are just as cool in my opinion and I believe would work great with the mango leaf size if you do it right, maybe I'll have to try it too once my Kent seedlings are big enough to start the pruning.

Fertilizing is not needed for any plants let Mother Nature do the work the soil life will take care of things

hey, I know it has been a year, but you can actually make your own mini composter for humus and the compost leachate, both can be used as fertilizers, the latter being liquid of course.

This was a helpful video. Can you review when to transplant the mango tree to a larger pot and then when to plant it outdoors in the ground? Also how do you know if your tree will produce fruit?
its only going to produce fruit if you live in the proper zone where it can grow outdoors. for us who arent in those zones they will just have to be a nice houseplant. when roots are poking out of the bottom you can check on it and repot it

I have succeed so many time at growing mango, they are really easy to germinate. I do the same step to open it, but then I wash on clear water the almond, I do not remove the brown membrane and I put it flat on a plastic container with wet paper towel under it. Then I put a plastic pellicule over the container and make a few small holes and let it go in sunlight. I never had any molding issue, it works everytime. When the seed is green and the root is starting to grow, I place it gently in soil and water it. This way you should have a healty mango tree growing in your house!

I'd suggest doing it easier ways. You can plant it directly into soils, about half in like he does. It will still grow without the toothpicks. Or do the paper towel method, that's what I do, and I grow many mangoes.

I got lucky getting it to grow just by an old school method. Wrapping it in a wet napkin an setting it in a sandwich bag.

@@TechplantChannel I tried many other ways but never had luck growing them. An of course when I half ass anything it starts growing. Lol

I used the paper towel method, and it was faster, just a tip :) my mango plant was planted in April of 2019, and it’s growing slowly!

I'm going to try this now! But when you plant it in the pot, how many times do you have to give it water, and how much?
It really depends on the environment. but I wouldn't let the soil go completely dry
