- This is our 19 SEER Bryant Evolution, Day & Night Constant Comfort, or Carrier Infinity 5 stage Air Conditioner fan motor at start up. This unit uses inverter technology and converts AC voltage to 3 Phase DC voltage. What is happening during start up is the motor spins in reverse to find the magnetic poles. I’ve seen that weird jerky fan startup on all of these inverter units

You can barely hear it. Inverter type compressors are much quieter
I'm looking at one of these for my home in Central Texas. My concern is reliability & what happens when the 10 year warranty runs out. I'm heavily considering sticking with single stage. I know it's old technology but just like a single speed bicycle, fewer parts to break.
Hey Paul, when the 10 year warranty is up you would be responsible for parts and they are expensive. This system is communicating, self diagnosing and very reliable. We back this with a good maintenance program and if we see something going wrong we proactively replace it. I hope this helps.
Sub-Cooled Heating and Air Conditioning Thanks! I just did the math and if a new system lasts 15-20 years, I'll be in my 60's. Probably not a good time to have to replace something very expensive.

Why this fan rotating reverse at starting?
It does this to find the poles so it can start up
