When Frank Miller first created the world of Sin City, it was made to be virtually unfilmable. Until director Robert Rodriguez was able to prove that the world of Sin City would translate to film in a very specific way. But how exactly was Robert Rodriguez able to take Frank Millers vision and adapt Sin City so flawlessly to the big screen?

"I don't want to make Robert Rodriquez's Sin City, I want to make Frank Miller's Sin City." If only all film makers were as reverent to the material they were adapting.
Most adaptation are not intended to be an exact replica, they represent a secondary vision of an existing work of art. Which is fine, what works in a book might not work in a movie, or a show, or comic. And sure, sometimes film makers don't respect the original material and that is why they change things, but most of the time it is more that their vision isn't the same as your vision.
When reading a book, you fill in the gaps of what the author doesn't explicitly state. Which is a lot more than you may thing. And a film maker has to make a choice on how to fill in those gaps. A book can refer to "An old decrepit castle" but a film has to decide how big the castle is, what exactly does it look like, etc. That is an obvious example that probably wouldn't cause any issues, but there are thousands of things in a given novel or comic that are implied without being explicitly described or shown, a film shows way more than a book or a comic. A picture is a thousand words as they say, and every second is essentially 24 pictures. If you do the math, that is a lot of words.
The problem is they all talk this way .. so it's really hard to find the sincere ones, like Robert and Peter Jackson. ( Maybe it's a good sign when they cast Elijah Wood :) )
Zack Snyder tried this to varying levels of success. His adaptation of 300 also used the book as the storyboard (though he added in the Spartan Queen subplot to pad out the runtime a bit) and that worked out really well. His version of Watchmen, however, was faithful to a fault. The pacing was all over the place. While that film has a lot of great sequences, it feels like an overall slog since it’s pretty much a tale in 10 acts rather than the film-standard 3. It would have been better off as a TV series, or edited in a way that fits film structure while still retaining the spirit of the story.
This is like the complete opposite of the live action Dragonball Z movie
@@achimdemus-holzhaeuser1233 "it's really hard to find the sincere ones, like...Peter Jackson." Have you seen The Hobbit movie trilogy. Those are so far from the source material, it's like he wrote a whole new story that was inspired by the original.
One of my favorite movies, I remember watching it in the theater and leaving in awe. It was nothing like I've ever seen before.
Agreed. I was only a teen. I wasn't into 'Cinema' like I am today. Two years later another two mater pieces were released to solidify the era as special, TO ME. There will be blood and no country for old men.
That's was cinema was made for - to make you wonder.
When I saw the first Spiderverse I was like "finally, something that comes close to what Sin City achieved with film visual styles".
“Sin City” truly is a masterpiece. It has one of the most stunning visual styles I’ve ever seen. It works so well with the gritty noir themes and genres involved too. I honestly thought the sequel was a solid follow up too. Let’s just not talk about “The Spirit” 🙄
The sequel felt like the stories left over from the first movie that were not as good.
@@steffenbendel6031 oh I totally agree, it definitely wasn’t as good. I still enjoyed it though, it wasn’t disappointing. The Spirit, on the other hand, is one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen, and I’m not exaggerating.
Mickey Rourke was definitely awesome and great in this. Excellent performance, he almost stoled the show
this movie is fantastic and underrated. It’s style was so unique and true to the source material. plus that trailer? whooooooooooowie fire
Hear hear!
Underrated? It's a singular monumental work.
It's really telling the way Sin City is a few years away from becoming 20 years old and yet it's still one of, if not the most 1:1 comic-to-movie translation in terms of writing and visual presentation.
The cast is next level, and they all do a good job.
I think the closest we've gotten to a moment like this was Into the Spiderverse. And it's had a ripple effect on animation that we've started to see in the last couple of years. The style and story were a huge risk in terms of what's typically done and it was a massive hit.
Miles: I’ll always love you, baby!
Gwen: Always, and never…
This movie was really good especially the horror aspects in it
Elijah Woods character was super disturbing as a younger kid watching this film
@@allknowerofwwetna1oh fuck yes, still scared af as an adult
With so many blockbusters nowadays being comic book adaptations, it's a shame they mostly end up looking so generic. Filmmakers are so obsessed with making things look photorealistic, they tend to forget giving their environments a soul. Thankfully, we are now seeing a small revolution in animation due to the influence of Spider-verse.
Batman ,Logan , Daredevil, Deadpool are close to comic book in films .
I saw it in theaters when it came out and it WAS an experience. brilliantly done. never read or even seen the original source and still loved it.
definitely a movie to watch on a BIG screen
Just imagine a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie but set of the original 1984 black and white using this style, be awesome. And keep it violent like the original comics were. No PG13 crap, hard R.
I was already a *_HUGE_* SIN CITY fan when it was announced that this film was in production. I saw it three times during opening weekend, and every time it got a phenomenal reaction from the audiences. (During the first viewing, an older couple in attendance who probably thought it was a more traditional noir movie, walked out less than fifteen minutes into its runtime.) Folks I knew who I thought would hate the movie ((loved)) it! The experience of seeing SIN CITY as something new was amazing, since I already knew every beat of the narratives. And the scene when Hartigan takes away the Yellow Bastard's final weapon? Oh, _THAT_ was a shared theatrical moment for the ages!
I remember seeing it when I was a kid and the stylised look of it is still infested into my brain
Helsreach: The Movie (2019) used a similar technique. Starts very roughly drawn and evolves to more HD as the story progresses. Well worth a watch, excellent movie.
One of those examples where the director wanted to truly honour the source material that ends up being almost a moving comic book.
I have yet to see Sin City and am curious to check it out, but despite the complaints of Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow looking too glossy and unrealistic, that film is still one of my top favorites of all time. So much style and atmosphere. So much world-building and imagination. So much fun and exciting.
Nah you’re gonna love this movie, GO WATCH IT and come back lol
You should watch it.
Sky Captain was so obviously green-screened. Sin City is its own thing, and definitely does not feel that way. As they say, it's like a graphic novel brought to life.
@@uazuazu I'll see Sin City when I get the chance. Even if it is, Sky Captain still fully works for me. I love the atmosphere, the look, the style, adventure, the imagination, etc. Still resonates with me nearly 20 years later.
A couple years later another Miller property was also a pretty unique visual film that got a lot of people excited and directed by a guy who's widely known for a unique visual style that's pretty polarizing. That film being 300 that director being Zack Snyder.
It was actually pretty good, actually.
Sin City is my favorite movie. When I saw it in the theater it blew my mind that I was actually watching a comic book
PROOF that when you stick to the source material, the fans stick with you.
This is what we get when you're faithful to the source. ❤️
One of the best comic book adaptations ever.
Funny to see Quinten Tarantino in some of the BTS just having the time of his like
Damn Elijah Wood was scary as Kevin.
Sin City did what so many comic book movies should be doing today. Let the creators be directly involved in the film. It leads to a better adaptation of the source material
The Sin City film does implement the effect of a colored object standing out from the shades of black and white, like how the film Pleasantville did.
My friend loved the comics. Told me the only difference from the movie to comics was, at the end, the yellow man was pantless while whipping Jessica Alba's character
Have a huge love the sin city series, the movie is still one of my favorite all time movies 🔥
I freaking LOVE this movie!! The effects are amazing
Brilliant film. I remain dismayed that they waited too long to release the sequel, and the sequel underperformed. I still want to see more of these. Clive Owen, Rosario, Willis, Rutger Hauer, the whole cast was fabulous. They waited so long that some of the cast either retired from health issues or straight up died. There's still a place for this in cinema now, but we'd lose a lot of continuity with all the actors being replaced Damn shame.
My favorite movie of all time. Hands down. Dweight and Marv are awsome.
Ooo I forgot about Sin City! Think I'll watch it again tonight. The intro with the assassin....that truly was something else!
The movie came out at the right time. Everyone was firing on all cylinders. It's a fantastic film, that's very re watchable.
I just finished watching it about 5 minutes ago, and I already want to rewatch. There's so many details, so many things tying into eachother that only click once I got to the end, that I can't wait to rewatch. It's truly incredible.
Movie is a visual masterpiece
Saw this the day after my unit came back from Iraq, such a good memory (the movie not the war)
🎵SINNNN.... Sin city wasn't made for you...🎵
So glad that people agree with me, because this is one of the coolest films in the past 20 years.
I loved this movie already but knowing how it was shot makes it even cooler :O
THAAANK YOU SO MUCH!
I hope this movie gets a 4K release
Now I want to rewatch the crow.
Sin City is one helluva awesome movie! I've loved it ever since first watched it.. Some staggering facts in this clip though.. Wow!!
Sin City is extremely underrated these days when people talk about comic book films
It helped they used actors with as much character as the story needed.
One of my favorite movies.
I love Sin City. I remember when my dad showed it to me when I was 11
I love the movie and the art style. Hope we get more movies like this!
The Spirit is a sister film to Sin City
More like a bad knock-off, sadly. Miller tried to do the same style again, but failed on pretty much every level, in my opinion at least. Shows that while he is a great comic book artist, the direction skills in Sin City mostly came from Rodriguez.
It' so frustrating that Sin City 2 were sutch a MESS.
Why couldnt they just keept the spirit and creative genius of the First one and made Nr.2 in the same quality...
The make up of micke rourke face is incredible
Excellent Idea...
This was unprecedented when it came out ❤️🔥
Speed Racer did the same thing but with the intention to look more like the original anime and it looks equally amazing
Awesome 👏
This is my christmas movie.
I remember seeing the trailer back when I was in college in 2005..I wasn't impressed back then ..but when I did see movie finally in 2017 I was deeply inspired by the noir effect ,rain and narration style..every short story is connected with the entire story ..I wonder if they will do more like this...sky captain was another movie in such style
This movie walked so that Zack Snyder's Watchmen (2009) could run. Pretty obvious though. Proof: The wonderful Carla Gugino (we don't see that much in movies anymore).
I found the visual work on The Spirit to be similar in its effect. Love these movies
An amazing example of “less is more”
sin city and max payne video game have such unique vibes
Sin City looked so goddamn cool, it's a shame that it didn't inspire other live-action movies to try and stylize their visuals.
My mits: 🤜🤛
Such a great film.
That was a great movie!
I can see why James Cameron hired him to do Battle Angel.
The streets are going to run red with blood.
That is a great movie. As a fan of graphic novels I can't rate it highly enough!
On Tubi right now, everyone!
Instead of trying to make CGI look as real as possible, they made Sin City GCI look as surreal as possible. Brilliant.
the original is one of my favourite films ever
It's a masterpiece
Wish it'd come out on 4K
It was shot in 1080p. Those cameras were the best digital at the time. Same as Star Wars Episode 2. There is a 4k of that on Disney+, but is uses upscaling, so it won't look as good as something shot 4K. And actually a lot of movies were only shot in 2K for awhile, like Mad Max: Fury Road. It looks great, though.
Frank Miller: Makes a comic deliberately designed to be unfilm-able
Robert Rodriguez: Challenge accepted
This movie reminds of studio ghiblis Porco Rosso
I love this movie.
Saw this in the cinema in 2005. It looked stunning and was so original.
I need this TV show though
My GF hated me after we watched this movie for the first time lol I spent the next week loudly narrating my life and over dramatising whatever I was doing or asked to do around the house…. Good times 😂
Still the best and most faithful comic book adaptation to date.
The Spirit is curiously missing from the topic, though admittedly it doesn't add much.
Fun Fact: Because of the way the movie was shot, Mickey Rourke and Elijah Wood never met until after the movie was released.
Tell me you didn’t watch the whole video without actually telling me you didn’t watch the whole video.
@@creatingbeautifulsongs7946 I could not wait to drop this fun fact before the video finished :)
I’ve read all of sin city, and I love it, Roberts movie is fantastic, I also really liked the sequel.
To this day, I still walk into establishments and tell the first person I see “That coat looks like Baghdad. And so does your FACE! “. To varying responses each time.
8:39 What movie is this? Scott Pilgrim?
Stick to the source material and it will be good almost always. Some writers (now on strike) should learn this before the get the boot.
Robert Rodriquez need to start making Alita Battle Angel 2: Fallen Angel 🥰
Sin City and 300 were so bold and visually stunning. The fact that no one had ever done anything like either helped make both unique. We need more stylized films. Avatar and the Star Wars Prequels were visually stunning, but kinda overkill IMO. Sin City and 300 hit just the right balance.
4:02 is that Quinten Tarantino? What’s he doing there?
Best movie o 2005
I wish we would get an r rated mirage comics tmnt movie in the style of this movie
7:10
The director should do a Spiderman noir film
They literally used this same technique when The Spirit was made a few years after Sin City.
If only they took this route with watchmen
🤔
Why couldn’t they just film someone’s foot kicking him?
Tarantino was involved?
Mickey rourke was the best in this ...I still say...and my mitts
I remember the movie being very stylized and violent, but not more than that. I can see why Rodriguez and Tarantino can work together. Both create stylized shit that leaves me feeling empty. Nothing I'd recommend.
Nice take, but it's weird you almost deliberately ignore 300. It's the obvious comparison, being the other successful stylized CGI Miller's adaptation.
