Blade Runner's box office failure is one of the greatest cinematic tragedies of this generation. Great video, man.
Actually, I think it's one of the best things that could happen to cinema. Hollywood is notorious for trying to copy a success and tack on uneccesary sequels. It'd be a tragedy if this film was successful because there would be so many terrible replications of this film.

George Daugherty No I think it's a tragedy. While what you say is certainly true, the other result of the box office failure and more likely the more prominent one, os that true artists like deni villneuve won't be allowed to take creative risks with big blockbuster movies like this one. 2049 really was an expression of pure artistic talent and integrity and it was certainly helped by the large budget provided by the studio. But now they might not take the risk to let an artist like DV create their vision because it doesn't conform to market analysis. And that is the true tragedy.
It didn't really fail. It's made over $200m worldwide so far
Yeah the only fact that a shitty super hero movie like Homecoming makes more thab this masterpiece shows how much the human race is doomed.
The philosophy of Blade Runner, which is extended into 2049, is summed up for me in Roy's "tears in the rain" monologue at the end of the first film. He's saying that it doesn't matter whether you're human or replicant, it's your experiences which make you who and what you are. If you live a human life, you are as human as a human, even if you're a replicant. You can see on Deckard's face that he grasps this at this point, and realises what he has been doing - not "retiring" replicants, but killing human beings who have all "seen things you people wouldn't believe". It is this speech, and Roy showing how human he is by saving and then sparing Deckard, which makes Deckard realise that it's ok to love Rachel, because she is as human as he is. And that's why he goes back for her. This theme is just explored from different angles in 2049 to add even more layers and facets to this. It was a sequel that really needed to be made, and I absolutely love what they did with it. The only regrettable part about both films is that Philip K Dick didn't live to see either of them.
We are imperfect machines that many times strive for "improvement" the illusion of perfection. but most always end up with unintended consequences in our quest for that illusion.

@David Parks there will always be unintended consequences when you enter any uncharted territory, human beings in general are not very rational thinkers, we are prone to mistakes. there is always a double edge sword. we are not very good at wain in the cost benefit a small mistake can be very costly. good point!

The lie for K was “I’m unique. My experiences differ from others like me. I was chosen.”. And for those reasons, he chose to save Deckard instead of eliminating him, which ultimately made K “different”.

The purpose behind Ks storyline was to say even though you might not be the "one" or percieved as special, you can still find purpose in a goal, setting objectives and completing them to further your passions are what makes your life worth it to you
I think K's loss of Joi hurt the most in the entire movie. I felt that.

I disagree. I think it was when K was physically beaten and stared at a giant hologram of Joi. He knew that no matter how large Joi can be she is just a hologram that anyone can buy. She is an example of consumerism, an iphone, a PS5, Pornhub. Even the hologram Joi said, "You look lonely, I can fix that." K then realized she was truly not authentic so even her memory stick getting crushed didn't matter as Joi was not real to begin with.

When my dad turned on the tv and said this is what we are watching I was like “Blade runner? What the hell is Blade runner?” Now it is one of my favourite films ever

I feel like I’m in the minority who loved this film’s lack of information beforehand. I went in genuinely blind to the plot points and would say it’s my favourite film this year. I wonder how ticket sales are currently doing?
My favorite kind of story telling... The one that makes you WANT to discover whathehell is hapenning, instead of just shoving it down your throat.
Environmental Storytelling, that's what Blade Runner 2049 does so well.
There are some of us. I try to completely avoid the hype before a movie I really want to see. I don't watch interviews, reviews etc. anyway. I love it that I knew nothing except the name of the movie.
I am also one who likes just enough info from a trailer for me to get an idea. A trailer should be like reading the back of a book you are wanting to buy. Now days I end up getting far too much from a trailer to enjoy the movie. Well most movies I don't enjoy due to the lack luster story telling people do these days. Everything seems to be treated like an action film.
I went in to 2049 knowing nothing and I loved it
The original Blade Runner didn't become a success overnight. It took years before people started noticing it. The same might be true for the sequel.

There's no problem with them. But it won't take years for people to notice the sequel, as everyone new about it on release and it received nearly unanimous praise. It didn't bomb at the box office, just performed below expectations so it's already been a success
Well a lot of normies thought it was boring, probably the same kind of people who would’ve said the same about the original.
Simple fact is that it's not a movie for everyone. By its very nature it will not become massive because of its limited target audience.
This movie is not intended for general masses. It is intended for those who have seen a miracle.

It's one of the few dystopian scifis that literally make me sad everytime I watch. That means it's damned good.

In my heart, I feel that 2049 was a complete modern masterpiece of sci-fi cinema. Not only did it completely capture the feel and universe of the original accurately, it felt much deeper into the personal questions of what is real and what is love. In fact, after the “VR sex” scene between the two where she needed to use a proditutes’ body in order for him to “feel” her, it blew my mind. It gave me a totally different perspective on the capabilities an possibilities of cross-oner between VR and reality a future where things are not clearly black and white but where love can even transcend reality itself. It was a profound feeling. Selfless love was expressed in several ways in this movie. But one of the guiding points I think was if selfless love can exist that isn’t “real” does its realness really matter when the love itself was self-less? Aghh.. How to word that…. I’m confused still by some of it. But I think that’s the hallmark of a truly great movie, something that can actually invoke confusion and conflict into the feelings of the viewer and doesn’t hand over the answers but lets the viewer reach their own conclusions in a way that feels profound. Very few movies have ever done this in my book. For me, it makes 2049 a legend, a landmark piece of cinema. The best things in life are usually the most undervalued things. This Is not exempted.. but a perfect exemplar of that.

@David Parks robot can't feel love it doesn't have a heart just like the o.p referred to ,what is all this mental masturbation people have about this film. imo it was drawn out self-indulgent waffle that raises a heap of questions but only answers a few,not satisfying, mostly just Gosling staring at something or someone with the same expression, for me it was watchable but not a masterpiece and did not do the original justice

Yes, but I think that you miss the fact that the VR girl probably never existed. It was left very doubtful that the VR girl experienced anything or did anything other than what Joe would have expected of a 'Best Girl'. The prostitute tells Joi that "there is nothing really in here". And it's not answered whether Joi actually was sentient or had feelings or had made choices and was not just in fact a well-designed chat bot. If Joi had no sentience, then nothing she did was self-less. There was no self to sacrifice.
The original "flopped" too. They're still the best 2 sci-fi movies ever made

@GIT GUD Traditionally, the masses prefer the mundane, like McDonalds is one of the most successful restaurants of all time. The exact opposite of a master restaurant. Masterpieces are almost universally misunderstood and criticized until some meme starts to catch on.
Blade Runner was a box office flop too, but it was one of the greatest influences in science fiction of all time, and is now hailed as one of the greatest movies of all time. It's entirely possible that 2049 will have a similar status in time. I think Mr AtZ has it just right.

I’m kind of okay with the box office bomb because it’ll mean no tacked on sequels. Like the director said. It’s not about making it a box office success but making it a success to the people who view it, no matter how big or small.
I loved 2049 and it was a success for me on a personal level. Just like how the Original Blade Runner wasn’t a box office hit but it influenced science fiction for years to come.
well said... and blade runner 2049 isn't trying to make a sequel. It is, in its own way a movie. It doesn't cash on its predecessor(like every mother fucking F&F movie) but continues its question-making and that's a good thing.
if there are box office bombs like this, studios doubt the quality of movie and go with the quantity of cash it can generate and that's very bad thing.

i could agree with you, because idc about the success of a movie. But the problem is that if this movies (movies that take risks and challenge you) dont get the attention and money that they deserve, people will give them less attention and support or even worse: stop making them . Thats the problem :(

blade runner 2049 was one of the best movies ive ever seen. certainly the best sequel ever made.
idk if its just me, but i fucking love the blade runner universe on a personal level so much. I literally see the rain and the dark neon city and feel connected to the atmosphere, almost as if Ive actually been there. Ive never felt this feeling so strongly with any other movie.
SUPREME LATITUDE I think the retro aesthetic of the future reminds of a better future in contrast to the one in real life despite the slight corporate corruption. We have way more problems, most of them meaningless and annoying in our everyday lives.

It however is completely out of step with modern sensibilities - Den' made a Hipster Movie and that is why it failed - it "Might" pick up fans long term - it might not. It probably as likely to be completely forgotten about as Ready Player One is likely going to be.
Also it's interesting to note that they reverse can happen too you can make loads of money and be forgotten about too - I.e. Avatar is pretty much forgotten about.
I'm not sure what there is to latch on to in this movie other than visuals (and that is likely true about the original too) If it was a Genre of Music it would be Improvisational Jazz.
Some people get very immersed in that others are bored to tears and find it discordant and annoying.
I do think for me the time the Movie annoyed me slightly trumps the times the Movie was visually engaging - I also STRONGLY disliked almost the entire last 3rd of the Movie.
I don't know if i'd call the movie Controversial - as I think it really just passed with little remark and many people likely don't even know it exists at all (any more than they do 'Soldier' does).
A slight shame - I will however neither decry or champion the Movie - I'll let time decide.

Seeing this movie in IMAX was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. We turned around and saw it in 3D and walked out in disgust. IMAX was MADE for this movie.

Jay from red letter media brought up an amazing point, that if Deckard wasn't in the trailer, the reveal would've been absolutely fantastic. Yet him being marketed in the film was one of the only ways to get certain butts in seats sadly. I really wish this movie was a box office smash cause it was near perfect in my eye. Denis Villeneuve is creating yearly amazing films so I hope it never stops.
24 Frames Of Nick he wasn't just in the trailer, he was on the posters too and was promoting the movie. I think it was a bad idea. Even people going because of the Harrison Ford would be disappointed by how little he was in it. It would have been like putting Mark Hamill all over the ads for TFA.

Joi is one of my favorite characters in the movie. At first she does come off as a bit artificial and superficial but as the movie progresses there is that apparent desire for her to become more real. I love the scene when he brings her along in his flying car and the look on her face is like a child on a ride at Disney world. If it is a lie it is what Mark Twain said: "The best lie is the sincere lie," and this is the lie that certain characters happen to believe themselves even if they are not completely convinced what they are hearing and seeing is the truth.
The love leaves open the question of whether Joi existed at all, or was simply a projection of what Joe would have wanted in a companion. It's quite possible that Joe and Joi having a relationship was entirely a lie.
@@celebrim1 Interesting point, but keep in mind something artificial that is designed to be a submissive entity might have difficulty expressing itself as a real human might. Joi does try to go beyond what we might think a artificial girl might, but again you may be right about it being a lie, but is it? Keep in mind Joe himself may not be allowed a girlfriend because he's an android and Joi is as close as he can get.
@@schizoidboy Think if you met someone who during their upbringing was taught that if you want a partner, you should become what they want. You enter a relationship with this person not knowing that, to you it just seems like you two get along really well and what luck you like all the same things. Is that not a real relationship?
So JOI is meant to adapt to a person and make them happy. That desire to make you happy was programmed into her, but in a similar way someone who is a 'people pleaser' has been programmed by genetics and upbringing.
But if she can 'feel' disappointment when you are unhappy, when she comes up with plans on how to progress your relationship, when she goes against the law and sacrifices herself for you, she at least seems to be a sapient being, even if her cornerstone motive wasn't something she got to choose in a vacuum.
@@Waywardpaladin Perhaps the question is whether a sentient AI can have/develop feelings. Is Joi sentient? Could she validly pass the Turing test? Is the Turing test truly capable of determining sentience?
@@alanparsonsfan In AI research they are working on teaching programs analogs for 'pain' and 'shame' to motivate them to avoid mistakes, so we will see where that goes :p
Using Frodo as a typical hero is an interesting choice when Frodo is very small, the author, JRR Tolkien, was wanting to show that superficial qualities are not relevant in determining someone's value.
Exactly, the whole point of Frodo being the "hero" is that anyone can be a hero, as there was nothing unique or special about him except that he's a little braver and more adventurous than your average hobbit.

@@glowerworm Nope, being a good person isn't a superpower/ability a select few people are born with, it is something that everyone can become, no matter their background. Also, I can tell your not a big Tolkien fan because you would remember that Frodo DID give in to the rings influence and gollum bit of his finger at mount doom and fell into the lava. There also were numerous times throughout the story when Frodo was overly protective of the ring.
@@bradleywoods3742 yes, Frodo gave in to the ring's influence. But it took a long time for his will to break. Compare that to any one else, some of whom attempted to steal the ring after just *looking* at it.
I didn't say Frodo was immune to the Ring's influence. He was strong against it, though. And it's not because he was a good person, but because he had a strong will. Aragorn and Gandalf were good people and even they didn't trust themselves to ever hold the ring.
It has to do with willpower, not goodness. People are good through their actions. Resisting the ring requires willpower. Different things.
@@glowerworm This is a misreading imo, Frodo was able to withstand the ring precisely because he wasn't special, the trick to the ring's power was corruption, those who were greater gave the ring more to work with, Frodo was able to resist because there wasn't anything to work with, he had no desire for greatness, and wasn't meant for it the way that Aragorn, or Gandalf or Galadriel were. They were all powerful beings who had a war to fight against evil, Frodo just wanted to go home to his friends, and for them to be ok.
That's not something that can be corrupted the way the others could, and it's not something that could be solved by becoming a huge power.
This is why studios meddle with production of movies.
When they don't we get masterpieces like these and people don't see them in the theaters.

Agreed. And I didn't remotely mind that the trailers barely told you anything. It allowed you to go in with a fresh mind and just enjoy having the story told to you. It was an outstanding story and visually stunning. Every shot had purpose. Bravo.
I've always said it: Joi is real. She asked K to take her with him even when he didn't want to put her on risk. And when his ship was taken down, her reaction was emotional: she cried and tried to wake him up, even though he was unconscious at that moment. Everybody talks about the billboard hologram scene and how it means that K just realizes that Joi was fake all the time, but to me it is the moment he realizes she was different all the time.
Agree 100%. Many think the big advertisement is a gutpunch because K sees she was just a program, but I see it as the nature/nurture impact on all life. That we all start with some set of code and while that provides a base, it is the experiences we collect further define us. So Joi started as this mass produced base program, as the advertisement shows, but the particular Joi we see throuhout the film gets more and more individual making decisions that wouldn't make sense if she was just following some inherent programming. The relationship of Joi and K feels like the next big question after the first movie's question on Deckard and Rachel (and handled far better than that first movie as well.)
A B Exactly. It makes you wonder if Joi made K human or the other way around. One thing is indisputable: not K, or Joi or Rachel were mere artificial products. They developed a “soul” through human contact. They were able to feel affection and pain.

theres the hooker who says that there isnt much inside joi's head, the billboard scene and a few other hints here and there, but i still have a feeling she advanced past her basic programming.

Great points. To me the absolute heart of the film, its themes that you touched on here, and the 'is Deckard a Replicant?' debate are all perfectly crystallised in my favourite moment in the film: In Las Vegas, when K asks Deckard if his dog is real (the almost reflex preoccupation everyone has in both films whenever an animal is present), and Deckard shrugs and says he doesn't know, 'ask him'. He implies in that moment that it doesn't matter, it's the wrong question to ask, and how the dog thinks and feels about himself is more important than how he was created. That to me is the answer to whether Deckard is 'real', or K, or Joi.

2049 is without a doubt the single most BEAUTIFUL film I have ever seen. Cinematic perfection, every department knew the task. Denis communicates his vision so passionately you feel it. This feeling brings out the best in everyone imo.

The last time I was so entranced by a cinematic experience was Interstellar. It's movies like this that make me love film
Saddly Interestellar ending sucked ass (the original ending from the script was basically replaced by a family friendly one, because money)
But yeah, it could have easily earned its spot as a sci fi classic if not for that
+Gravel Not complaining about the tesseract scene if you paid any attention at all. It's the outcome that wasn't supposed to be like this. After interating with the Tesseract and sending the message to his daughter, Cooper should have died in space (as he would in any realistic script), not knowing whether Murphy has been able to figure out his theory or not. I'm complaining about the "Space rangers rescued you" bullshit, which is just plain lazy writing to reduce the movie's classification in order to sell it to a wider audience - which wasn't Nolan's plan with the movie's direction in the first place. If THAT was altered, then yeah, it would definitely be a classic... Oh, and btw, there's no such thing as a "flawless film".
exact same here. this movie and interstellar are my favourite from the last decade and if they didnt exist all my favourite movies would be from a long long time ago. its a shame they are so rare these days

@lawerence sensei Try watching Silence it's a movie that had be so entranzed the whole time and some of the best acting and cinmatography I have ever seen.
This movie is the antedote to the corruption of post-modernism...even when finding out that your life has no real purpose, you make the time you have meaningful, by doing responsible things...life has no meaning, but responsibility does, and responsibility is hard because true meaning is never cheap. Do not look to the Universe to give you purpose, take your meaning from the Universe by taking on responsibilities, the only way to live a purposeful life.

Mark McAllister Its funny that your statement contradicts itself when you talk on the corruption of post modernism, explaining your views on the world, which is post modern. Those who are post modernists don't believe in absolutes, therefore, what you say is not absolute. It would have been more appropriate if you said this in a subjective way instead of objective.
I've watched 2049 three times. It haunts me. It's like the original Blade Runner. It's really interesting with so much to absorb.
What's the movie's message
It speaks volumes that, for me at least, the death of an AI was the most affecting moment in the film. Holy crap Luv is brutal. And the fact that she dies like a real person because she wanted to be a real person and live a real life? Denis, you’re amazing.
Just found out Joi's commercial literally says "Everything you want to hear", maybe that's why K said "You don't have to say that" when Joi tells him she loves him?
But I'm still convinced that their relationship is authentic.
I guess that's just part of the beauty of the whole idea: there is no definitive answer. For me, I felt like the part where the ad says "Everything you want to hear" and "Everything you want to see" was evidence that Joi was nothing more than programming, but one can just as easily make an argument that she moved beyond her programming when she consents to being moved to her emanator and losing one of her most secure lifelines.
And to K, does it matter?
Yeah, totally agree about the movie without a definitive answer, but what do you mean about K doesn't matter?
Ah, perhaps I was a bit vague on that. By that, I meant does it matter to K whether or not she really felt any "feelings" for him - whether what she did was programmed or her own, independent decision. On that topic, I'm not sure whether it matters to K. On one hand, the end result is the same for him. On the other, though, we can clearly see that he's not sure what to think about it once he sees the massive Joi hologram - he'd rather not find out the answer, in fear that it would not be the answer he wanted.
I mean, you're wrong, but if your interpretation enhances the movie for you then It doesn't hurt anyone.
I was a bit puzzled as to why K was so transfixed by the holographic advert for Joi, it's not like he wouldn't have seen the same sort of advertising before he bought his copy.

Blade Runner 2049 was the best movie I've ever seen in my life. It was a success in my heart, screw the box office numbers, the art is all that matters and Denis even says that he makes movies not for the money but the love for the art form.

Here's a question to ponder. Is Joi's desire to go out into the world via the portable hologram device an aspect of her will, or is it a desire programmed into her to get Joi owners to buy the device?
As for the box office of the film, I think in the long run it will be deemed a success because 30 years from now people will still be watching and talking about it. I don't think the same can be said for most blockbusters, regardless of how much money they pull in.

The emanator opens a world for Joi that I doubt many Jois get to experience, though it certainly is possible that her "cabin fever" was a ploy to pressure K into an upgrade.
I asked this very same question myself. Lets take it even further though, could there be some sort of planned / promoted obsolescence built into Joi’s programming? With the ability to take Joi with you anywhere on a device that can easily get lost, stolen or broken combined with Joi’s request for K to tear her from her home console, couldn’t Wallace Co plan on people desperate enough to buy their products to get a taste and hook them and get them dependent on the experience Joi provides? It would definitely mean more business / profit for Wallace.

The main character is the character you're meant to identify/empathize with. If that's not k than i must have been watching a different film. I thought the story between K and Joi was beautiful in a tragic sort of way.
Art should never be judged on how much money it makes. It has everything to do with how it makes you feel. This film is so beautiful, and has every major creative involved working at the peak of their powers. In time it will be seen as the classic it is, and a brilliant addition to the original story.
I thought you were going to talk about how Joi points to K and calls him Joe towards the end... to me it seemed like Joi WAS just an A.I. as much as I would like their love to be real.. that's just my take (:
something that has stuck with me that the original Blade Runner taught me that was really explored in the sequel which made me love it is that if you yourself are not sure whether or not you are authentic to the point where it haunts you and you worry over it doesn't that in of itself show some degree of authenticity? And even if you are human and don't worry about it at all doesn't that lack of curiosity make you less authentic? How real are you really if you are never truly sincere or at least try to be? These questions are what makes me love both films

Seen the film 3 times, planning to see a fourth. Obviously you can tell I hated it...
Anyways, I’d like to think that K is the main character but the story revolved more around Deckard and Racheal. Like you boldly stated how he’s a slave based on who and what he is, but once the opportunity arises on the possibility of being something more, he gains hope from that. Him at one point believing that he could be that Replicant-born child. However, once he discovers it’s a lie, he loses that hope and he’s right back where he was at the beginning of the film.
But due to the relationship of him and Joi (which I believe she was becoming sentient, since her last words were “I love you” before she dies), he makes that decision to save Deckard HIMSELF. That decision was special and it pays off since “dying for the right cause is the most human thing we can do”. By reuniting a father to his daughter. Nothing super duper extremely big where he saves the world, but a simple cause such as that.
Dying in the snow meant he was at peace within himself, and he accepts it. I like to think the film was about K discovering his humanity. Except that moment won’t be lost in time like tears in rain, but will be remembered by Deckard, which is another form of a meaningful existence.

I believe joi was sentient because she behaved as if she loved him when he was unconcious.
I didn't like the way ford took over the picture once he started and would have preferred K remained the focus.
K doesn't have to the chosen one to be the protagonist. But it is irritating when the protagonist for 2/3 of the film is shoved aside for the big name star. Ford essentially became the protagonist. They did the same thing with him in TFA.
On star wars main trilogy of trilogies-- it *was* the story of the skywalker clan and how they balanced the force.
What they did at the end of TFA and in the beginning of TLJ was a complete canon reboot. It would be akin to reading a book for 30 chapters and then in the last 10 chapters they kill all the existing protagonists and their antagonists, dumped all the philosophical concepts the story was previously exploring, even dumped the existing "rules of the universe established for the prior 30 chapters", and finished the story with new protagonists, antagonists, new philosophy, and new ground rules for the universe.
It would be like if in book 6 of harry potter, *everyone* died including voldemort and the last story was about the characters from the french school making a new technological bomb.
it would have been better to set this story as *not* part of the trilogy, much further in the future. Don't say you are going to finish the trilogy to get fan's money and then reboot it.
i got the same feeling there was definitely a bit more to joi even though they hinted multiple times that she was just some bot that had been programmed. the last big reveal is where the huge joi hologram on the street calls k a "good joe". that doesnt really mean she wasnt sentient, just that they start off programmed the same but she still might be capable of having her own thoughts at some point.
something else ive been thinking about; she seemed to get the concept of the replicants being able to reproduce without having it explained to her. this wouldnt have been anything she was programmed to know about since the people who programmed her would not have known it was possible at the time. but i suppose if she was a really advanced ai then that might explain it

Man I LOVED this movie so much. This video made me appreciate the movie that much more too. Denis Villenueve is one of the best directors working today. Dude hasn't had a misfire yet. Blade Runner 2049 proves just how talented he is.

I was in the midst of a horrific divorce when I saw Blade Runner 2049. The first scene showing K and Joi together was one of the most inspirational portrayals of a pure, innocent love that I’ve ever witnessed. It gave me hope of experiencing something similar someday.

Ive watched this movie over 50 times since its release. It’s my favorite movie of all time, and in my opinion the greatest sequel of all time. It’s a beautiful movie with an even more beautiful message. Every performance was masterfully acted to point where it doesn’t even feel like it’s an act at all. The cinematography is the best I’ve ever seen. Truly one of the greatest movies ever made.

I remember being really moved by the last minute or so in Blade Runner 2049, but I couldn't figure out why. All I can do is wait a couple months and watch it again. This is truly the best movie of 2017, and maybe for a few years to come.

I couldn't wait to move to the exit. Loss aversion for paying for an Imax ticket I guess. I noticed many in the audience didn't have the same aversion.
Same reaction as you, here. The first time around, I felt something about the movie resonated deeply with me, but couldn't quite tell what. In subsequent views, I was able to form my understanding of the story and catch meanings, metaphors and aims. Blade Runner 2049 is thoughtful on many levels, it offers multiple layers of interpretation, and yet the plot manages to be round, concluded and coherent.
The other reason that drew me to the movies three times (with a fourth scheduled for the end of the month) is the audio. I don't have an home theater yet, but can't imagine this film played on anything less than an expensive Dolby Atmos system. Wallfisch and Zimmer's score can't quite stand on its own like the legendary one from Vangelis, but as a complement to this particular movie it's just perfect.
It adds a raw kind of power that honestly, I had never experienced before at the movies, let alone a tiny room. I have no regrets paying for another ticket for this reason alone.

This film made me feel such surprising feelings I've not gotten from a film since "Grave of the Fireflies." I left this film feeling empty yet somehow glad I was empty. I liked it so much when the twist revealed. He's the main character that we see but he's not 'the one', and his decision afterward is his own decision. it's kinda soothing and reassuring to have this kind of character sometimes 😊

The fact it didn't do spectacularly in todays Hollywood fast food special effect machine climate is the absolute ultimate accolade. A beautiful and thought provoking film that continued seamlessly from the original. Most moronic cinema goers want easy to follow plots with all the answers immediately but this classic film serves up long term gratification, leaves the viewer with more questions than answers and is an absolute modern classic. Incomparable to anything contemporary in the sci fi genre and outside. The whole film is littered with philosophical beauty following the originals prose. Utterly love this film, the cast, the director, the pace and the beautiful imagery. Totally amazing....
BR2049 was promoted as an action film and it wasn’t. It was a mystery suspense film with action scenes, big difference. Is intense with a lot of character development and the Director threw in some action sequences to spice it up a bit. I personally believe it is too slow for most audiences. With that said I thoroughly enjoyed it.
I wonder if it didn't have as much cinematic success as we'd like is because people don't watch movies because they want to think and be challenged but because they just want to be either hyped or relaxed.

I think at times many don't seem to see how Joi is not simply programed to adore K, but she is in essence a reflection of K''s own changes in so much as how he has been programed to follow orders, designed to do what he is told to do, him being the same as Joi, yet somehow breaking from that programing allows his relatiionship with Joi perhaps more real than those who own a Joi but are not a replicant and or doing treat her real for they themselves are not real as well. I think Joi's love for K eventually went beyond her programming and therefore her programming is rewritten how she decides it to be. When K sees the hologram advert of Joi near the end, I don't think he thinks that was only a lie when he sees the copy of her ad, "everything you want to hear, to see" isn't reminding him that she is fake, but that is how he is viewed, but his Joi some how moved past that, and perhaps so can he.

I know this is an old video but I have to say, I like spoilers because in this day and age of so many BAD films, I want to know beforehand if I will like a film. Knowing plot details and the like helps inform me as to if I WANT to spend my money on a film.
Finally sat down and watched it for the first time like 3 days ago. I was vaguely aware that it existed already, that it was a sequel to the original which I had seen like 15 years ago, but I knew nothing about the plot so I went in practically blind.
It was slower than I wanted, heavier than I expected, and all around mostly more, I don't know, different than i think it should have been.
I wouldn't change anything about it though. I loved it, and it definitely gave me a lot to think about the last few days. I think going in blind like I did really elevated the experience of the movie for me, and I really want more movies like this to be more popular

Yes Joi is an AI, yes she was programmed to be the girl K wants her to be, but speaking for myself I felt something when Joi was killed by Luv. No matter how artificial it may have been, what Joi and K had felt real. So if you have to ask if it was real, does it really matter if it was or not?

Joi's "desire" to be a "real girl" is something her coding established when during the initial boot process when K bought her. Those programs have a very sophisticated personality generating routine that picks up on the wishes of the owner.
but does it matter why? She did become more than just a program. You can see her seemingly having consciousness and being curious about things even when K is away or not paying attention to her. Like how she's looking around while in the flying car, looking around Deckard's place, asking K questions about dna, the horse and las vegas

She is a sophisticated video game npc AI. We are told this. She asks questions! Of course she does. She looks around! Of course she does. The company that makes her, also makes the device to let be carried around. We don't know that she "became more than a program" and we wouldn't because we aren't given that information. This is one of the themes of the movie.

I like to think of her as a person that just has a default personality, but that doesn't mean you can't change it. You can see how different the joi in the ad and K's joi are.
So since she's able to learn, that makes so much stuff possible.
She tells K that she wants to be like a real human and you can see she tried by comparing her to the joi in the ad. It's impossible that she was programmed to act 100% just like a human. No, she learned it. Joi in the first scene definitely looks a lot less like a human than later on

I appreciate the conversation about it. It's kind of dumb that we can only do this sort of thing here on YT - and there's not a better SM structure for conversing and tracking.
The part of the story where she does grow and become more "herself" and the obvious affection that K feels for her is very important. Is she moving from simulation to "real"? We are intended to ask that. Does K really feel "real feelings" for her or is he also a sort of simulation in a fleshy body? That's also a theme of the movie. Replicants are not being treated like they are real, but we, the audience, very easily accept them as people. By contrasting our easy acceptance with the harder question about Joi... we get some fun juicy philosophical questions rolling. Why accept him and not her? Why deny her and not him? Is self a spectrum?

In that sense the questions a film like Blade Runner 2049 raises are far more important than any hard answers it provides. We watched this movie as a family for my brothers 17 the birthday and all us fell asleep half way through the movie
Nowadays society is sick... Box office, high reviews, great advertising, familiarity, formulas... it's all machinations and the real thing remains in the background. A great movie nowadays is either a blockbuster like Avengers Infinity war or a cinematic experience, trully artistic yet not so easily accepted movie like Blade Runner. IW works not because it's a follow-up or a culmination of a huge project, not because it features well known characters- of course these all help for the financial succes. But IW, just like Blade runner, was done with passion for the story and characters, by people truly involved. Sure. One will be regarded as a box-office hit, the other a failure. But then, one will be remembered as a great action flick, the other as a straight-out classic. Why can't people realise a good movie is that which is more than meets the eye? Which has a story behind the story and a message to tell...
This move is so underrated! It will be a classic soon...

i think part of the reason blade runner 49 didnt so well in theaters was that it was so subtley complex it was hard to absorb in the first viewing. i saw in the theater, and after a couple hours sitting in shitty theater seats surrounded by flattulent mouth breathers i could hardly focus on the movie. I truly fell in love with 49 when I was finally able to watch it at home... and every time i watch it now, i can barely restrain my tears. I hope and suspect that success will catch up with this masterpiece in its theater afterlife.
Bladerunner has influenced me in my life in many ways, I lived part of my childhood in Hong Kong and feel a real connection to this world. So glad 2049 met my expectations.

Good analysis.
1. In the original Blade Runner, Deckard hunts the replicants as if they were a malfunctioning machine. In the end he is shown that the replicant Batty has human characteristics: he showed him pity, empathy, compassion and mercy. Yes, he also showed him anger, and hostility but in the end when he knew he was dying, he decided to save Deckard.
2. In the sequel, K aka "Joe" like Batty saves Deckard. But this time the replicant saves him not out of pity or mercy, he does so out of a deliberate choice to some higher ideal and goal.
3. Finally, the original film while it clearly has influenced a generation of directors and many film fans, was also not a box office hit and in fact viewed as a disappointment. It simply isn't a film that was meant for everyone. The pacing is very slow, almost glacial at times, in the painstaking way bits of evidence are examined and re-examined. Here, we get lot of long beautiful shots of how much a wreck the world has become. It is not a world we yearn to live in, but rather a pretty terrible place that someone people, replicant and non-replicant, manage to eke out an existence.
I just sat down and watched the original for the first time and had to take a month to see the sequel...now I’m going down the rabbit hole. Thanks

For me both Blade Runner films were portals to thinking and feeling novel things. I thoroughly enjoyed the new movie, not because it gave answers to questions or was simply well made, but because it forced me to think about anything and everything. It made me look deeply into the film's world, and consequently how I look at my own world. Truly one of my favorite movies. And thank you for the insightful analysis, I always love listening to what you have to say.
Any movie that makes us think is worthy of the runtime imo.

it's a paradox because even though K is the "main character" of this movie in the sense that we follow him, in the end he's just a regular 'joe' as said by joi in that big advertisement. the main take away of the movie is that even though joe is not a human, he chooses to act more 'humane' than anyone else in the movie as proven by his last act and that he died for the better cause. he may not have been the character who was "promised to change everything" as he had previously thought so but he definitely contributed to a bigger cause.
@@camille8064 - that doesn’t seem like a paradox to me, he’s just the main character outright. he’s the protagonist, he’s the POV character for the most part, and he’s the only one with a full arc. he may not be the special “savior” character he wants to be, but by making his own choices he achieves his humanity.
perhaps he’s not the main character of the implied Replicant uprising in the universe of _Blade Runner,_ but he’s certainly the main character of the movie we saw.
It didn't pass the sleep test when I saw it in the theater.
But then I watched a bunch of UA-cam videos about it explaining the details and I watched it again and thought it was great.
I watch movies for the story and to be entertained, but practically every shot in Blade Runner 2049, is a work of art. I started noticing it from the second time I watched on to every time after. Every performance is fantastic.
As a degreed fine art painter I agree with u 100%. Every still shot I see of this film I feel like I'm looking at a great work of art. Very few movies are like this and I noticed it in college while watching the movie The Last Temptation of Christ as well.
[SPOILERS] I think there's something tragically beautiful in how letdown K was over his [plot twist]. And it's not just a reflection of him wanting to be human or "the one", but also a reflection of his own need to find his purpose; discovering who he thought he was. In essence that is what makes him become human. Those memories gave him a soul. Deckard and Rachel obviously were not thinking of that when they created him as a decoy. But that's what they, ironically machines (well question mark for Deckard) themselves who escaped their own captivity and became conscientious, created in K. A sentient being. Remember when the police captain said K's "Done fine without one" (Meaning, a soul). In a way it's true because it's not until he thinks he has one and is uncovering the mystery of his own human life, that every existential, -and human, emotion starts to creep up on him. As it turns out, they are more trouble than they are worth in the end. Sad Gosling :(.

Kay became a hero at last. Something special. It was a heroes journey in the making but yet not a fancy one. So simple and plain that it becomes vague with the theme.
This movie, like many others that i can think of age like wine over the years. This movie is one of them.
Let's face it, the majority of the population are simply not intelligent enough to enjoy a film like Blade Runner 2049. Everyone will want to deny this, probably even the creators, but deep down we know it's true. Far more than I heard negative reactions from people who saw this film as the first in the series, I heard general confusion, lack of understanding and as a result, boredom.
Those people have their endless superhero movies and Dwayne Johnson action-comedies, we have Blade Runner, and we get a film like this literally one every couple of years so don't feel guilty for it.
True. Films with thematic subtlety are often overlooked. Audiences tend to want escapism rather than having to think.

OMG you should see the debate/argument I was having with some guy over on a youtubers video on Ex Machina. Just could not wrap their head around the concept of sentience. If it was made of nuts and bolts, it was a "thing", end of story. Then they claimed to be a big fan of Star Trek and that they thought CDR Data was a great character....yep. I even posted a link to the conclusion of the trial where Picard defends Data in court, keeps him from being taken apart and analyzed. Dude still didn't get it.
Yeah. The feeling I got from this film was one I hadn't had in a long time. This movie was made with pure and genuine love. It wasn't meant to be a cash grab. It was meant to be an actual movie. They didn't do it for the money. They did it to entertain audiences. Ford didn't hate his role, Gosling was able to portray a replicant amazingly. Everyone did an amazing job. And I loved every second of it.
Really? I have a Mensa card in my wallet as testimony to my intellectual prowess. Yet I found this movie dull, trite, uninspired. It was certainly far less provocative than "The Arrival". I thoroughly enjoy films that make me think, this one didn't.
this was a fantastic movie! felt exactly like the original, its like nothing was lost in the 30 years we had to wait for a new one. and thats what makes it a great movie. also, I love when movies dont show huge scenes for previews, it gives us a chance to ACTUALLY BE SURPRISED WHEN THEY HAPPEN IN THE MOVIE.

They shouldn't have spoiled Harrison Ford, who appears in the movie after like 2 hours. (It didn't even need a Harrison Ford, in my opinion). I don't even watch trailers, haven't been for years, yet you couldn't escape the fact that he's in it -- and it absolutely didn't have to be like that.
Considering the plot of *this new movie*, whether Rick is a replicant now does actually matter.
Because /spoilers/ whether replicants like Rachel can reproduce with other replicants OR with humans is a HUGE freaking difference. Maybe it was supposed to be answered in future movies, sad that it seems we won't get one.
