  • When NBC's Heroes first debuted in 2006, it was drastically ahead of it's time in the superhero genre. Airing 2 full years before Iron Man came out, Heroes was a very different look at what superhero stories could be. Though as the series progressed into season 2, the Writers Guild of America went on strike and Heroes would never recover.

I was recently writing for a video game project where the lead programmer tried to "improve" my work using ChatGPT instead of asking me to edit things myself.
He was so proud when he showed us what he'd done, and after reading it all I could think was: "look how they massacred my boy." The fact that he couldn't immediately tell how shoddy it was made me realize just how blind non-writers are to the complexity of the craft.

I'm of the personal belief that ChatGPT "could" prove to be a valuable tool to writers. However, that is completely marred by the fact that most companies seek to decrease cost and increase profits, even if that means cutting out the human element of most work. The bigger problem with that is they are trying to make a "tool" that replaces the tool "user". A tool is only so good as the one that weilds it

I was so invested in heroes when it first came out. The super power mystery aspects of the story were pretty unique for a series at the time, but I felt by the end of season 2 they had ran out of new ideas and the mystery aspect felt more and more forced and generic. They added forgettable new characters who just made it a bit convoluted, but the occasional new interesting charecters always seemed to go nowhere or be wasted (christopher Ecclestons invisible man for example). I never managed to finish the series, it reminded me of prison break in a way, a good interesting story with a good cast but started to feel monotonous and stale

Hollywood's entire business model revolves around creating stories, and yet they regularly undervalue and mistreat their writers.
Constructing narratives is an incredibly complicated and difficult task, but because it's hard to appreciate the skill required compared to visual art-forms, executives assume anyone can do it. Yet I'd argue bad writing is the only thing that can single-handedly destroy a film or show. A bad actor or special effect can be overlooked, but never bad writing.

I've said it once, I'll say it a thousand times.
Heroes didn't fail because of the writer's strike. That was just coincidental timing.
The primary reason that Heros failed is because they didn't make it an anthology show. That was one of their original plans and they chickened out.
The reason that season 1 was so compelling is because it was about normal people trying to live their normal lives and being thrust into a world beyond their understanding. It was about coming to terms with this strange, scary, wonderful new ability that made them different. That made them unique. It was about coming to grips with a part of yourself that you didn't ask for and maybe trying to live the life you wanted to or maybe make something more of your life now that something has changed.
All of that was gone season 2. It would have been gone regardless of the writers strike. And that was the magical, relatable, compelling part of season 1.
Season 2 failed because it wasn't about a new group of heroes coming to terms with their powers.

It was painfully obvious that Tim Kring never had a plan for what to do with any of the main characters after the whole bomb thing. The show was trapped in painful loops. Claire and HRG ... were just ... kinda doing the same stuff. Claire was totally envisioned around the "Save the cheerleader" thing no arc imagined for her after that. Characters like Hiro/Peter/Sylar had powers that broke the narrative. That wouldn't have been a problem if their stories were allowed to end, but they got too popular.

In my opinion making the show anthology show was a big mistake from the start. When you have large ensemble cast with many great actors/actresses, audience will connect with them instantly. Do you honestly think majority of audience were gonna be ok if peter was killed off even when he was one of the most impactful characters?
Lets not forget they did introduce some new characters in s2 and most of them were complete trash.
As already pointed out Tim Kring never had a long term plan or backup plan for what to do with any of the main characters after s01. The show had a wonderful cast and yet on the show they hardly in scenes together. How many times hiro and peter had a scene together? or peter and claire? or hiro and claire? or mohinder and hiro?

@@hasan_1888 I think Kring clearly built a lot of these characters with the assumption there would be 100 episodes of story about them. Peter, Hiro, and Sylar are ridiculously overpowered. Once you’ve gotten beyond the conceit that they aren’t good at their powers yet, they are basically gods. That is just the beginning of how this show just wasn’t sustainable with the same cast. If anything Season 2 needed to be like “Most of the original cast is gone. But Mohinder, HRG, and the Paper Company still exist. We are following mostly new characters with the potential for cameos. The biggest mistake this show made was waiting till episode 8 of season 2 to reveal what happened to Nathan and Peter. The views already fell off by then because the show shifted focus from the mythology the audience was invested in. On top of that they introduced too many new annoying characters no one gave a crap about.

IIRC, one of the reasons Exodus was scrapped was that it did terribly with focus groups in the early stages, when they'd already prepared the "bad ending" to Generations where the virus gets out and had to change it late into development. Which is a shame, because dropping that also meant basically pretending everything Peter did in season 2 never happened.

I felt that the flaws of Heroes started in the first season, and that the second season ended up with a narrative debt that it couldn't overcome. It made for a good first season, but it didn't leave the show with anywhere to go unless it nerfed everyone's powers. While I think Season 2 could have been improved without the writer's strike, the fact is that the writers were present for the first 11 episodes, and yet those problems still remained.

You missed the biggest issues with season 2, which are actually addressed in the DVD extras for that series. The plan initially was for the virus to be released, not saved like it was at the end of s2. This essentially killed all momentum for the story moving forward.
They'd already filmed footage for that happening, with future guy smashing the vial and the virus getting into the airwaves. There's even raw pre-CGI clips, along with storyboards for what they intended to do. With the virus out, Texas is effectively quarantined and Nathan ends up infected with the virus. Angela saying "you've opened Pandora's Box now" was supposed to be in reference to the virus, not future Peter showing up and shooting him.
Remember Maya? The woman who had the power to take and give viruses? She was supposed to go out a hero (pun intended) and take in the virus herself, saving Texas and, subsequently, a lot of the characters who may have been infected. In doing so, she killed herself, closing out her character arc in a neat way after feeling like a failure and a walking apocalypse.
The rewritten story and s3 arc retooled is mostly why the show did so poorly. Season 3 tried to up the momentum and spiralled out of control with a two-part arc and then season 4 was just meh. Such a shame too because it had a lot of potential.

The 2023 strike didn’t effect much just delay shows. And you could say maybe it accelerated the end of some shows like young Sheldon or Blue Bloods but those shows were gonna end anyway.
The 2007 strike happened right at the beginning of the season where a decent amount of episodes for the first part of the season were produced, but it was hard to get production going for the second half because it lasted from November to February. Last lasted from May to September so it was probably easier without disrupting seasons

BUT with A.I all you have to do is basically Google type your idea in and it makes it look great if not better than what you originally came up with. Then you can even build on top of that already inputted idea in the matter of minutes. When it would take my spray paint art 9 hours to make the cut outs and then I’d have to wait for the weather outside to be right, and it would take me like 2 days to complete a project. So it’s like speed and creativity are what A.I has which is bad for ppl employed in that field

I remember watching season 1 as a teen back in 2006-7. Stories were very inspiring and motivational but after the raid on Bennett's house the plot became much more complex and convoluted but the finale was very impressive ! I knew Ali Larter from Final Destination, Adrian Pasdar from a supernatural tv show that was aired on French channel M6 as well as Stana Katic and Zachary Quinto from 24. It was absolutely mindblowing to see the latter going from nerdy tech support to total psychopathic villain ! My respect for him as an actor skyrocketed immensely.
But I never watched any episodes from S2-4, just lost interest after that. I remember Tim Kring apologizing to the fans for the bad plots in the second season and promising more compelling stories after that.

I thought it was because Krieg got sued for plagiarism or copyright issues. They had to rewrite because they were not allowed to follow the original story arc and had to come up with new stuff that did not support the original ideas. That is is why it went downhill from what I remember at least as far as plot and character. I had no idea Season 2 even had that many viewers, it is a different vibe from episode 1.

I think they did have an idea of what to follow up with after season one. I think the studio & the network didn’t trust the idea (basically, seeing a new bunch of heroes emerge to face a new threat in a different, self-contained story) and the producers kept trying to balance what the studio wanted (more of the same thing) and what they wanted (doing the same thing in a different way with different characters) and there really wasn’t a good way to bring them together and satisfy anyone.
