How Sacha Baron Cohen Perfected The Art Of The Prank
Вставка
- Опубліковано 25 сер 2024
- Sacha Baron Cohen, known for his roles as Ali G, Borat, and Bruno, was one of the pioneers of the modern prank show. Of course shows like Candid Camera existed before Ali G took screens by storm, but Sacha Baron Cohen was able to master the art from and inspire countless others like Eric Andre, Punkd, or the cast of Jackass. Even transitioning to the big screen with all three characters, Ali G, Borat, and Bruno cemented Sacha Baron Cohen as the king of the prank show.

That man is what every prank bro youtuber wishes they could be.
Mizzy this is how you prank someone.
It's not just mindless SHOCK PEOPLE stuff really, it is also meaningful satire as well as funny. He either harmlessly messes with people or gets people who deserve it to expose themselves.
And unfortunately tries to
I like some of sacha’s stuff but for the most part, most of the people he “pranks” are in on it. Just like some of jackass pranks were faked and the people were in on it. Sad to say but true.
@@thathertonfuels8355 well some of the stuff is obviously faked/scripted but much/most of it seems authentic. As long as it's funny, honestly. Imo his crowning achievement is who is America, because he pranks people that there's no way they could be in on it.
Cohen gift is being able to make the most normal people so relaxed with cameras they let their guard down and act like themselves.
And destroying their lives.
Remember the red neck interview? Lmfao
He’s funny but he’s just another self righteous left wing douche bag.

I know a guy who used to produce film festivals, and one time about 20 years ago he had an unusual Austrian reporter called Bruno staying with him for the weekend to cover one such event. He only realised some time later that 'Bruno' had indeed been SBC in character for the whole weekend without once slipping up, hanging around with people familiar with TV comedy and the Ali G and Borat personas. A true master of the craft.
Fun Fact: The police were called on Sacha Baron Cohen ninety-two times during the production of this film.
Which film?
@@mattlo9443likely borat
@@mattlo9443 Borat
How does he always get away you might ask? He's a Jew.
@@mattlo9443Borat
Worth a word as well just to say how brave Cohen is with some of his comedy. He's made a career where he could have easily got his head kicked in or worse in the name of satire, and I think there are very few comedies in the world who could play the parts he does so completely straight-faced and without ever breaking character or losing their nerve.
He takes "pranking in the hood" in a classier way than these UA-cam prankers.
This man is also able to be a great serious actor. In the Trial of the Chicago 7 he gave an excellent performance
You should see him in the TV show The Spy. Superb.
@@loungekillercame looking for this
broo the trial of the chicago 7 was such a good movie
He was in a Scorsese movie called "Hugo" he played an officer very well in that movie
@@LebahG4nteng very abstract having a man play a building, I'll have to check that one out
SBC does a great job of being able to toe that line where he can convince people that he is what he says he is despite how absurd he is acting during interviews. I think a big portion of that is actually being very explicitly "not American" during them, where people are willing to just buy that this person is from a different culture and are just being ignorant to American norms. If you took someone like Knoxville and had him do the same interviews, he would probably have far more people stepping away because the feeling of "this is a prank" would set in faster. Being Ali G or Borat puts people in a bit of a false sense of security that this is going off the rails, but is not a prank.
Amazing improv actor and so fast on his feet. Still amazing when he can get high profile people to agree to talk to him, feels like once you are famous enough part of scheduling interviews has to have someone on your staff do a "Is this SBC" check just to be safe.
Americans try to help out and not be biggoted yet he exposes their bigotry without even trying lol
Sacha Baron Cohen is a comedic genius. I don't use that term lightly. He was definitely robbed of a Best Actor Oscar for the first Borat movie. His ability to remain in character even as he risks grievous bodily harm from the people who he interviews and/or exposes their bigotry is unmatched.
You failed to mention his last series: Who Is America
7 interviews with people from all corners of the american life, with him disguised as 5 new personas.
Brilliant and frightening.
The very first clip in this video is from _Who Is America._
I loved Da Ali G Show, and always thought his ability to keep a straight face and stay in character was one of the greatest feats in acting I've ever seen. His skill and, that show was completely underrated.
""When Brooklyn grows up, is he going to be a footballer like his dad or a singer like Mariah Carey?" one of the funniest lines ever
I used to watch borat as a kid and find it hilarious because of how dumb it seemed. When I rewatched as an adult I found it even more hilarious because of how the movie is so self aware of it’s at it’s stupidity except for the people that interact with borat.
Fun fact: In contrast to his characters, SBC is a soft-spoken, gentlemanly Cambridge man who considered pursuing a PhD before going into comedy.
I wouldn't say SBC is softly-spoken. In most of his interviews he's pretty animated and loud. I haven't met the guy but he seems like an extrovert.
His Harvard speech as Ali is magic, it’s made even better in that he fluffs a line and is obviously nervous but keeps it up and smashes the performance
I like how he trolled people in the theaters. My friend and I went to see The Dictator when it came out. We noticed an elderly couple enter the movie. I started laughing and told my friend, "how much you want to bet those people think this is a legit and series documentary about a dictator?"
Once the movie reached the scene where he ziplines naked and he hits the window on the other side, the elderly couple walks out and never comes back. I laughed even harder knowing I was right.
Was watching Borat last night, i couldn’t help but notice all the influence of modern day prank culture that was taken from Sacha Baron Cohens incredible talent
Sacha Baron Cohen was great at showing people to be hypocrites or not as knowledgeable as they thought whilst never making it feel stupid or nasty. Eric Andre for example always seems to make people feel uncomfortable to get them where he wants them. where as Sacha uses his great character acting to make the person he's speaking to think his character is clueless on the topic, and lowering there guard which makes them speak more freely as he sets up a question that will surprise them
He's also great at being one himself, such as not telling people why he's filming, not getting peoples consent to film in impoverished villages, making fun of poor people, making fun of gentiles but throwing a major fit when someone makes fun of the chosen people.
@@jasonhymes3382 everyone is a hypocrite in some way, it's human nature
@@jasonhymes3382 None of that is wrong...
You should look into Chris Morris’ work if you like Sacha B Cohen. He fathered the modern British comedy scene with his shows On the hour and Brasseye. His movie Four Lions is a masterpiece.
^this. Chris Morris is the master of satire x
The Paedogeddon episode on Brass Eye will always be one the most funniest pieces of satire I've ever seen
four lions is top tier
Wow, never knew I appreciate this guy in a core level. Don't judge a book by its cover
His brilliant social commentary should really be celebrated more.
Anyone else catch that “master of baiting” joke our boy dropped? 😅
I have never seen any of Sacha Baron Cohen's movies, but I'm still familiar with his work and he has done an excellent job. The imitators fail to understand what makes what he does so good vs what they come up with. Which reminds me of videos I've seen, I think on this channel as well, pointing out how people try to copy what they thought made something good, but missing the context behind it. LIke the Home Alone movies that followed the first one.
If you haven't seen borat, you need to. Masterpieces. Both of them.
I think it's a bit reductive to refer to what he does as pranking. He is so much more than a prankster going so much deeper with satire. He often spends hours in character getting the subject to be lead into a false sense of security.
I remember watching a hero's of comedy show with some huge name comedians like John Cleese and Ricky Gervais saying that he was the bravest comedian out there cos he'd do things no one else had the balls to. How he hasn't been seriously hurt before is incredible
This video was a brilliant and eloquent deconstruction of Baron Cohen’s achievements. Just perfect.
Pranks serve a social purpose and most effectively played on people who are so out of touch with our shared reality it snaps them back
No that doesn't make sense
He's the most funny, thought provoking and ballsy of any prankster ever, he's the GOAT!
It inspired Diane Morgan with Philomena Cunk, which is a brilliant successor of this type of prank interviews....never gonna forget Arthur of Camelot interview; Comedic Gold.
I gonna start watching his astounding
Work and major respect for him
Ok SURELY there is some way we can get him Sacha to see this vid like a hashtag or something. I feel like he would heavily appreciate such quality put together and summed up amazingly about his work and impact to such a deprived form of comedy.
Diane Morgan as Philomena Cunk is doing a great job in the prank interview genre with her show Cunk on Britain. I'd highly recommend giving it a watch.
Ah show like Candid camera is still running in Germany. It's called 'Verstehen Sie Spaß?' and is on air since 1980 4 to 7 times a year.
What's most impressive about SBC is how much he commits to the role to the point you'd think it's a real person. Being able to stay in character while feigning the level of comical ignorance Ali G or Borat have is almost a super power.
his interview with kobe is one of the funniest interviews imo becuase if you dont know the actor you'd be confused by the clips from the interview which makes it so much better 🤣🤣
I hope he still gets to play Mephisto.
The scientist from South Park?

Sasha getting the recognition he deserves!! Also was that Martin Freeman in the last scene? lol
Yep. one of his early roles, right around when he hit with the office (uk)
Did you read my mind? All I’ve been watching for the past 2 days has been Da Ali G Show episodes and Bruno clips
I hope the rumors are true, that he will play Mephisto in the mcu.
That role would fit perfectly. :)
I hate this. He the world needs more exposure to his genius but the McU is not the way, he tears down ridiculous things
@@RoboCatTrainer just playing a part in the mcu won't end his career. Best case scenario is, that he will get some more roles after that. Disney is know for casting smaller actors and in a lot of cases they got hugh stars afterwards (for example: Tom Holland, Chris Hemsworth, RDJ).
@@Kennydustin333 i dont think a part in the McU would end his career. I think it would go against all he is & believes in. Ok every actor wants success & £££ but hes primarily not an actor hes a satarist. I can see him in a McU parody just not the real thing
Does such footage exist of him actually being recognized when he's playing one of his roles? Because I would really want to see it. :D
google ali g and david beckham
I think _Borat 2_ had a some scenes of that.
Yeah, in "who is america?" He goes into a gun store and they knw who he is 🤣
Sacha Baron Cohen is a genius in what he does.
The true belly laughs of borat may be the best times I’ve ever had in a theater. That and when Allen comes down the escalator in hangover
Sacha is on another level, Jackass doesnt compare
Sacha Baron Cohen would have been a dead ringer for Freddie Mercury, it's a shame that movie didn't get finished.
Baron Cohen is a genius, one of the greatest comedic actors in history.
I think Nathan Fielder and The Good Liars also belong in this category. Bringing out truths in people without being obvious or overly antagonistic.
Pretending to be dumber than the person you're talking to while asking incitory questions in an innocent way is a fascinating way to uncover a person's honest beliefs/behaviors.
I'm pretty sure Sasha Baron Cohen directed a few episodes of Nathan for you and Nathan Fielder a few on "who is america", the 2 most genius pranksters of all time imo
Nathan Fielder is one of the best of our generation too i think.
Early videos of Keith Apicary during the GameTrailers era were my favorite prank videos
So I found out he was supposed to direct and act in the Freddy Mercury biopic showing Freddy’s party side including parties with little people carrying around platters with c0caine. the surviving members of Queen didn’t want that image of him shown so the deal fell apart. for context, this goes against what Freddy said when asked what he wanted done with his work after he was gone. when asked, he said ‘remix me, revamp me, reuse me, just don’t make me boring.’
I never knew candid camera was a actual show 😮mind lowkey blown
This is what a Tier 10 actor and entertainer looks like... god bless this dude!
SBC had developed and elevated the characters through years of hard work and preparation. You tubers just create a spontaneous Ill thought out act that took seconds to create. Having said that I do like the Tree Guy
The Borat character is on another level
I loved this guy growing up
I think Stuttering John on the Howard Stern show late 80s through the 90s was the early template for modern prank comedy
Tbh, a lot of the ali g interviews with celebrities is both parts knowing its a character but he just doesnt go out of character
Watching borat for the first time was such an amazing day
So glad i own the dvds of Da Ali G show.
Bro is so good at pranking he pranked a whole country lmao
Take a look at Norman Gunston. A character created by Australian Garry Mcdonald back in the 70s. Not only did American Celebrities not have a clue if he was serious real or not but he was also present at one of the most significant political event in Australian history…in character.
In the UK in the early 200s we had Dom Joly and his hidden camera show Trigger Happy TV. It was brilliant
It’d take a hell of a budget and a ridiculous amount of safety oversight but I’ve always wanted to see a hidden camera superhero movie. Basically a candid camera prank show but instead of pranks the producers set up elaborate stunts and effects to make it look like people have super powers and then catch people’s genuine reactions to it.
Imagine just random people going about their day when two dudes wearing colorful spandex run in and start yelling at each other and everyone’s just laughing and filming on their phones thinking it’s just two crazy people being stupid when all of a sudden one of them like actually shoots lightning out of their hands or lifts up a car and everyone’s just like “woah, what?”
I think it’d be funny
That's a million dollar idea right there
He's a Legend for comedy
The interview with Tony benn is probably the best
Dom Joly had a show in the early 2000s called Trigger Happy TV. I loved it. The pranks were absurd but endearing, like a comic strip. They tried it in America and it just wasn't the same. The jokes had a little less heart, and seemed a bit more crass or raw. They went from confused to annoyed. Anyway, I'm sure there are vids somewhere on UA-cam.
You completely forget to mention Tom Green regarding the innovators of the genre. Tom Green was doing this type of comedy skits on community TV well before the Ali G show.
And Andy Kaufman did similar things about 30 years before that
Tom Green was shock value. Raw, Freddy Got Fingered shock value.
My most vivid memory of the show he had was when he unveiled the,
"Where's My Dinner, Bitch?" statue.
It was a man grabbing a woman by her arm while about to strike her.
As a kid I thought it was kind of funny for just being so openly fucking absurd. As an adult it's just annoying how shock value it was, and for no real reason
"whats the probl m with ICE cream?"
"It drips"
This man a menace 💀💀
i'll never forget when he called Buzz Aldrin Buzz Lightyear haha so good
- I like you. Do you like me?
- I am not sure!
I think one of the best to take Sacha’s and jackass’ style and flip it is vlog creations his videos are halarious
I remember when I went to Bruno with a friend, we were laughing our guts off
I’m surprised that Andy Kaufman was not brought up at all in this video. Out of all the other “prank” comedians that were cited, Kaufman’s work seems most in dialogue with SBC. Great video though!
Yes, I agree. The line should be from Allen Funt ("Candid Camera") to Andy Kaufman to SBC. Neither _Jackass_ nor Eric André should be in that pantheon.
Borat is my favorite movie.
Ali G bacame popular as the internet was growing. Ali G clips were the ones I first downloaded from napster like programs. I would watch these over and over and over. Good times
I liked the part that he kidnapped Pamela Anderson
theres this youtuber i found recently called "TOO APREE" his comedy style reminds me so much of sasha baron cohen. Definitely recommend looking him up
I didn’t even know about his Cheadle Hulme character- I used to play rugby against them at school
I do approve of a talented prankster sticking it to the man. It makes me nostalgic for the 70s when such guys as Andy Kaufman and George Carlin were doing their best stuff. I don't really know how to describe what SBC does other than to say that he is deserving of a medal at the very least.
With people like that around, I can be certain that things are going to be just fine.
SBC is so unbelievably likeable.
"Master of baiting" - Well said.
Dudes a legend
Tom Green really deserves some love. He invented the shock/prank category that Knoxville jumped on. Mono ville did take it to another level but Tom was much more clever. Pretty much a combination of Sasha and Johnny
Vitally the best prankster
I heard he's rumored to play mephisto in the mcu for marvel can't wait to see his unique take on mephisto
I love him so much!
Nathan Fielder and The Rehearsal was the only thing that came close to SBC in recent years
As a Mancunian its wonderful to hear you say Cheadle-Hulme
hey, nerdstalgic. well put
Sacha Baron Cohen and Nathan Fielder are my favourite pranksters
That "mangled dialect" is a real street dialect from areas of london.
I still use "Dangerous Dave" to describe activities I dont wanna 'fess up to lol
Trigger happy TV deserves a mention here
The plunger to the bald dome 😂
Nerdstalgic could you please cover dirty sanchez, literally jackass but in the welsh valleys and 1000x more shocking, the tag line for the movie was "makes jackass look like the tellitubes" I think they where being pretty modest
Dennis Pennis is another English created character who probably inspired SBC
"Booyacasa this is Ali G, now I'm gonna interviewing agent from FB aight"
"No, no, it's FBI"
*Man, he's so hilarious 😂
Really missed out on mentioning Nathan Fielder., he is basically carrying the mantle of Sasha.
back in the launch of borat I was almost on highschool and couldn't figure what the movie was about... was it a movie? Was it a documentary? Is this staged? The conflicts and the situations he created to expose the other person to a situation in a way that they laid themselves bare and started sprouting the worst in them fascinated me. I remember trying to grab anything he had created prior and managed to find a SINGLE episode of the Ali G show in a bootleg dvd that I watched and marveled to no end...
At the end of the prank ideally everyone should be laughing.
It's the difference between a prank and a scam, you are happy to learn it's a prank but realizing something is a scam makes you more sad.
A movie will never be made like Borat ever again
Garry McDonald played a character called Norman Gunston in Australia in the 70s. Interviewed a lot of big celebs of the day. Sacha is the king though. Some of the funniest TV i've ever watched.
We grew up in an awesome time :)
Poor people who missed this all
