Important to note about realshatter:
The lack of damage is entirely intentional, in the shell models theres lines saying "shrapnel generation" and "shrapnel damage" and both are set to 0.3 :)

this is true however there are cannons that are still substantially better than others, GSh23L and Colt Mk12 are now currently the best guns in the game, because after Realshitter update the F-4s and mig23 ML have been sold like no other plane in WT history.

@@Ccaraaa gsh23 hits much harder than the Vulcan and AN-M3S hit harder than Type 5 30mm. GSh is a delete rig gun. If it deletes the end of a chain it removes such element but if it deletes the beginning of the chain the whole chain is destroyed. This said if you aim at the center of the enemy aircraft you simply delete it from existence. Vulcan will give you some hits and a fuel tank fire that gets sealed instantly. I can get more clean gun kills with the yak38m than with the F-5C and these aircraft are the very opposite when it comes to flight performance and gun type/placement

The SMT blew me away with how easy it was to play. I got a 5-6 k/d in it despite rarely having over a 2kd in most planes. The flight performance is on another level.
I got the german equivalent, the 21mf. I just finished spading it, and it has been a really fun jet to use, but tough to grind with bc.... tech tree vehicle.
snail blessed me with a talisman on the mf about a day after i spaded it, so far its gotten me all of teir 7 and the mig23 because i had started researching it before it went into teir 8. cant buy any of them tho LOL

as a person who has played literally every russian fishbed other than the PFM, the GSH-23 was hit hard. the 30 mil guns seem… ok? i still can get nice slaps but its very inconsistent. GSH 23 is a different story, was in the 21bis (USSR) and i legit dumped all 250 rounds into one A-10 and he still was able to fly and gun me down. his entire plane was pitch black and he was literally on fire.

I think the BR changes also affected the SMT. I can still manage to get some good games with it but definitely not as easy as previously. Before the BR changes the SMT faces premium US attackers all day, after the changes the US teams got a lot more folks playing fighters and it’s certainly a lot tougher.
as a big fan of the mig-21smt it was quite shocking to come back and experience how much it was affected by the last updates, it still is a monster but the way you need to use it makes it feel like an entire different jet, i won't stop using the mig-21smt or other planes that got heavily affected but i just wish we had our old jet performance back :(
this and the f8u2 were my favorite jets for a while and helped me grind both tech trees jets a lot. both are 1/2-1/4 of what they used to be. miss them being good
Im sad now, cause my F-5C and A-4E are fun but after this video i now understand why i should enjoy them as much as i can. Thank you Walvis for this game changing tip, for me not to care about repair, but about my favorite jets that dont seem to have realshitter yet.

I started playing the Swedish mig21 bis about 2 weeks ago and there's no other word to describe what I went through except "suffering" I got so angry because the plane I thought was going to be my favorite turned out to be the worst and all because of Gajin's stupid evaluation of putting the plane on the 11br and now I'm facing the damn mig29 And the f16....they made my life sh*t

Rare high quality war thunder content, love your vids man.
Been playing Mig21 MF for 3 weeks (omw to unlock German Mig29), that plane turned out to be one of my highes k/d ratio (right after Komet lol). Yes, the gun sucks ass, but R-60 are still good if you know the timing when the enemy has their pilots blacked out so they cannot use flares. And shooting in the right time - BOOM enemy down. HOWEVER, I had really many times when R-60 did almost no damage to planes at all, and I got my kills secured by teammates because of it.
The real issue is with the next jet - Mig21bis. While it is better than MF version in all aspects (R60M, 6 of them, more engine trust, 50 more ammo), my games are really becoming 50/50 at this point fighting against F16 that I can't flare off, or Mig29 that simply outrun me. Also R13 are pretty good missile when you are perpendicular to the enemy at more then 3km, but they also lack damage.
Regarding the gun, it is top tier in head-on fights. The bullets are fast and the damage is high enough to knock out pilots (around the fifth of my total kills was done in this way). But don't even try to blast the ass of Su-25, it is literally impossible to do so. Better to get alt and strike its wings or wait till it turns.
UPD: Forgot to mention the repair costs. You will not make huge profit playing any version of Mig21 (except premium ones, ofc). Even with premium bonus. It takes around 2 kills to cover the repair expenses and after that the bonus is pretty small. I was so mad when they increased the repair cost up to 21k , it was a struggle to find joy flying that jet. Thanks God they reverted the changes.
While its weapons are indeed in a pretty sad state, the Mig-21SMT is still a very good plane.
If you compare it to the J35D, you get shorter range missiles that pull harder (which can be a blessing and a curse).
A similar amount of cannon ammo (they deal less damage, sure. But the placement is better compared to the gun in the wings. Both take some time to get used to).
Similar flight performance, but the SMT can pull harder nowadays it seems (which also eats up more energy), similar top speed and acceleration.
However, unlike the SMT the J35D does not get flares (or tracers). Which can make a pretty large difference in surviving an encounter with.
Aim-9J's range currently isn't even that much better than R-60's range or it might not even be better just on par with it

I put 70 rounds into a floating AV8C with the Mig-21S Hit Hit Hit!!! it's unreal how much they crapped on the guns honestly just thought you had some bad luck but christ they are bad :(
Hit a stalled F-89 with 9 or 12 37mm and he flew off slightly smoking.
Gaijin recently buffed 20mm cannon fragments, the gsh23 and Shavaks are way more consistent now.
Due to realshatter I avoid using HE laden belts and switched to those that have more AP and/or incendiary.
The one exception would be German planes with Minengeschoss ammo, since those aren't afflicted by the nerf to shrapnel generation that realshatter caused.
Real shatter made this cannon almost useless also for the mig 23
Lets be real most guns these days dont feel great. I have over 1k matches in the F5C and 90% of my gun kills are from setting people on fire rather than actually sheering off flight controls or wings. And if you think the a-10 is bad the su-25 is so much worse, the amount of Su-25s that it either takes multiple fires or 200+ rounds to kill with would blow your mind. Even the vulcan these days doesnt feel great and it feels so much worse on jets like the F5C where we are meant to get gun kills rather than ever rely on missiles.
I've found that the armoured target ammo does more fatal damage, as in less clipped wing A-10's flying back to base.
They are also cheaper stealth shells as there are no tracers for some reason.
The cannon should be better now, they buffed fragments yesterday for 20mm+ aircraft

21mf and I can tell you this guy is trash talking way too much the mig 21 is still on the best for its tier since most games are full of a-10s
If you think the MiG-21SMT's gun has low damage, try 20mm Hispanos with Britains default belts. You get: practice shell, tracer, HE, HE. Practice shells are roughly equivalent to LMGs, tracers are just practice shells that are tracers, and now thanks to realshatter the HE shells do just about nothing.
Now if you happen to be flying one of the earlier cannon armed Spitfires on top of all that you also only get 60 rounds per gun. You can dump all your cannon ammo on target and they will still fly back to base...
Not playing that until the new economy updates comes

Why do you not take the R-3R? I find that radar missiles catch people off guard at this BR and you can joust with people who essentially don't have the weapon you do, and many people just don't bring chaff

I don't think we can call the current state of 30mm cannon damage "real ". A couple of 30mm shells can completely sever off a wing or a tail. In WT sometimes you pump 20 into someone and they can somehow fly. Also heli damage model is still unrealistic af
if they buff this gun they gotta buff the vulcan too, they balanced them well.

Imo mainly It's the damage model of the F5. Even if you get a missile in or a shot it is often a CRIT that does absolutely nothing to the flight performance. And especially with r60 critical hits is all I get on f5c/e. Imo they need nerfed and obviously they should get a higher br, imo f5c should be 10.7 and get aim9j as compensation, and f5e should be 11.0 and get aim9l. Those are basically like zeros of their br. Not the fastest but turn entirely too damn well. The only reason they have bad overall stats is that lvl5 noobs buy them and they don't even have a good flare/missile key bind.

I disagree. Although the F-5C is extremely good at 10.3, it isn’t outright better than other jets at the same BR. For example, the SMT can decimate a single F-5C very easily in a dogfight. The issue is just that the F-5C plays very well into the meta, as it is very good at staying fast which is very important in ARB specifically.
The F-5E though… Now that is a tough cookie.

I stopped playing with real shatter. Made the MiG-15 i loved so much just not worth it. Got 3 37mm crits on 1 plane and just gave up.

I started doing YT to make videos exactly like those. However, in order to further grow my channel I think it is important to also upload more consistantly in-between bigger projects.
I was actually working on a very elaborate 'best way to grind the US tech tree video', but that has gone in the bin due to the announced economy changes.

Another thing I’ve noticed is that the teams are horrible. Especially at 9.7-10.7. You are the main fighter force against F5E and F5C. Your team doesn’t have a 10.7 fighter. The Americans all have flares, and your R60 and gun are just not reliable.
I love focusing SMTs in my F-5E.

The problem isn't realshatter itself, but rather the fact that it's only applied to specific autocannons while others keep using the old shrapnel model. Realshatter makes shells produce more realistic shrapnel damage, as IRL a 30mm HEFI shell would make a very big hole in the fuselage rather than exploade the whole aircraft.
It is a mechanic that should've been introduced to all autocannons at once, and not just to a few at a time. This can be said for many mechanics in War Thunder.
This mechanic should just not have been introduced in the first place. All it has done is degraded my WT experience.
@@WalvisYT I honestly don't see a problem, as long as all jets get it at once. Guns don't do less damage, just less spall, so where you hit matters a lot more rather than just a single graze making the aircraft exploade.
@@ofekk213 In my experience all of the guns that would one tap a plane into fragments still do that (German cannons with mine shells for example), it's just now any faction that isn't blessed with hand grenades for their cannon ammo, or relies mostly on HMGs, needs way too much time on target to get a kill or even enough damage to degrade their targets performance.
It makes it so that if you start a fight at a disadvantage then pull a great maneuver to get guns on, they fly though your guns and don't care so even though you out flew them they still win the fight. This can be especially frustrating in an uptier where all your fights are likely at a disadvantage because your plane is just worse than everyone else's.
Weather or not it is realistic it still makes the game worse.
the problem with the delta MiGs is that they've been nerfed over and over. SMT is at the moment just a less maneuverable and more powerful F-8E. I prefer the Phantoms because they have roughly the same TWR while being able to switch between full ER (holding mach), 13G rates at 1100 or one circle slow speed dogfights against MLD. MiG21 SMT was once really good at slow speed but now not really. Bis got all it's multiple stage afterburner removed because phantom mains kept crying because bis caught up at low altitude.
Edit: oh and the R60 is useless if the target is 2km away moving faster than the launch point. And AIM9 series haven't been affected as much by the drag nerf, I keep getting killed by unspotted AV8As from 6km away at 2000m on my MiG19.

Nah bro tripping a little bit. Yes, real shatter made the gun worse, but compared to some of the others, it still does great damage. Tier for tier, still the best MiG-21, and the big maps actually made it better, you just need to change the loadout a little. I take 3x R60 and 1x R3R.
With its better fuel capacity, take full fuel, climb, zoom at Mach 1.6, yeet an R3R, and orbital strike the rest of them with R60s. Farming bozos has never been easier.
on god that. I'm seething really hard because I can't do anything with Vulcan, if I really wanted to kill people with the gun I'd rather (and do) go out in Yak38M and engage people, use VTOL and 1 click them out of the air. It is funny because when I get the Phantom I get 4 kill assists with 1200 Vulcan rounds but when I manage to outplay people in the yak38m i get 4 gun kills with the four r60s still hanging from the wings and only 90 out of 160 belly gun rounds.
GSh23L and Mk12s haven't seen Realshitter and if they did they got reverted because of the mig23 ML and F-4S. These two guns behave this way: whatever they touch, they delete it and the parented components. This said, if you touch a flap you remove the flap only because it has no children attached. If you aim at the wing root you will remove the entire wing because you are deleting the root that has the wing as child and the wing has the flaps and ailerons as sub children. If you shoot at the fuselage the aircraft blows up in every piece and it is funny because GSh23L does not cause fires, it cuts in half.
