    The MiG-21 Fishbed is unquestionably one of the greatest fighters of the post Second World War era. Not only was it Russia's first operational Mach 2-capable interceptor, but it also served as the stepping stone that enabled many nations to enter the age of supersonic air combat.

      For fixed-wing aircraft, single-syllable words denoted piston-prop and turboprop, while multiple-syllable words denoted jets. Bombers had names starting with the letter 'B' and names like "Badger" (Tupolev Tu-16), "Blackjack" (Tupolev Tu-160) and "Bear" (Tupolev Tu-95) were used. "Frogfoot," the reporting name for the Sukhoi Su-25, references the aircraft's close air support role. Transports had names starting with 'C' (for "cargo"), which resulted in names like "Condor" for the Antonov An-124 or "Candid" for the Ilyushin Il-76.

    It seems that Soviet designers were great proponents of the KISS method. Their tanks, especially in WWII, the AK-47 and the MIG21 are robust pieces of equipment designed to last and easy to operate. This plane seems to have some problems but on the whole it fulfills what it was designed to do.

    • @piotrmalewski8178
      @piotrmalewski8178 Рік тому +15

      I heard that Soviets would store their jet fighters outside in frost and then before flight beat the ice off the plane with sledge hammers. What I do know for certain though is what issues Poland had when switching from Soviet MiGs and SUs to F-16. It turned out that our airfields were too bumpy and too dirty for F-16. That is because Soviet jets had heavier, more robust frame and suspension, titanium shielding and sometimes alternative, over the wing air intakes to be able to operate from bombed airfields, so they didn't need well maintained airfields either.
      A similar principle was adopted in design of all Polish jet fighter 'Kobra 2000', that had main intake over the wings and was capable of the cobra maneuver, hence the 'Kobra' name. It never got funding though.

    The development of the USAF 3rd generation fighters led by John Boyd in the late sixties was based on lessons learned from Iraqi Airforce Mig-21 after being flown by Munir Rawffa and landed in Israel.
    The Mig was flown to the US, where every single system/component studied in depth and used later on to develop new concepts (Light Weight Fighter) to counter Soviet military air doctrine.
    The F-16, F-18 was inspired by theses lessons.

    This aircraft is an enduring symbol of freedom and military might. In many parts of the world, the children draw a recognizable silhouette of a MiG-21 when you ask them to draw an airplane. Airshows in Serbia, where I am from, almost always feature a MiG-21 in one way or another. Now that we enter the supermaneuverable stealth fighter era, a MiG-21 is slowly but surely becoming a relic of a bygone age. As many other revolutionary machines, it will always be a beloved aircraft with pilots, ground crews and enthusiasts.

    In my opinion, the mig-21 fishbed conceptually remains one of the most effective combat aircraft of the jet era. Here we see Russian and American aerial self-confidence. Both Russia and especially America demonstrate greed and a deceptive overestimation of the production of weapons as a means of earning money by officials, businessmen and generals. The state budget is the largest monetary resources.
    An example is the latest generation of F35 combat aircraft. As if this plane can guarantee air superiority. These are mostly assumptions. Of course, something new always gives some kind of psychological confidence and motivation. But it's mostly emotions.
    Mig 21 and F 35 and all other types of aircraft fundamentally and technologically differ little from each other. Both the Mig-21 and the F35 are part of a very complex and sophisticated system that requires great moral and physical effort to maintain balance and solve any problems. For example, the same Mig-21 can fight and intercept the same F 35 in aerial combat at long, medium, short and contact distances. Provided that the pilot has passed all the necessary training and education, which gave him a clear and sober picture of the situation with all the pros and cons of the upcoming and full-fledged battle.
    And, of course, a well-organized organic system with proper management, maximum training and a brave team to solve any problems. Especially when the pilot fits exactly into the available time and space, and also makes good use of the current conditions and instantly decides how to safely get out of a dangerous situation.
    In particular, in contact air combat, a modern or superior radar system, avionics and weapons are not critical, one can even say that they are useless in a stressful situation.
    Development and updating take place inside the machine. The machine is practically powerless before external forces and factors such as wind, temperature, turbulence, gravity, air density, optical distortion and so on.

    Good video without an annoying, clumsy robo-voice. Many Soviet designs were brutal on esthetics, Fishbed included. The cone inlet was practical but lacks the sleek design of Western aircraft. Function and quantity has its own quality.

    I always loved the MiG-21. I wish Canada had ignored the U.S. and completed the purchase of the MiG-21. Instead we were saddled with American junk like the F-104 Starfighter, the F-5 Tiger and the somewhat better F-101 Voodoo.

    Ah the Mig 21, not the most effective interceptor in the world, but it was cheap and easy to operate. The ability of the Soviets to produce them in large numbers and export them cheaply definitely was an effective part of their Cold War strategy.

    The metaphor here is the WW2 M-4 Sherman tank. It was never as tecnologically advanced as its German opposition. It never had as good a gun as its German opposition. But we made factors more of them than the Germans did theirs, and it was as simple to maintain as a car, whose engies it used in some models. As a result, the Israelis were using M-4 derivatives in the 70s.

    • @UltraTotenkopf
      @UltraTotenkopf Рік тому

      *Well, if you compare tanks, then the M-4 Sherman is not very suitable for this; the T-34 is the most common tank of the Second World War and it delivered a lot of problems to German tankers; the Germans even tried to copy it when they made their T-V Panther tank !;-)*
