Here's Why Andrew Zimmern's Bizarre Foods Was Canceled

- Since 2006, Andrew Zimmern has been taking Travel Channel viewers on a journey around the world to find some of the most unique and interesting foods as the host of "Bizarre Foods." In his decade-plus time with the show, Zimmern's eaten everything from insect-filled nuggets to stuffed lamb spleen. But in 2018, the show was moved to a less-watched time slot on the Discovery network before ultimately getting cancelled in 2021. While some believe that Zimmern's controversial take on midwestern Chinese food restaurants was to blame for the show's move and ultimate demise, that's not the case. Here's why Andrew Zimmern's "Bizarre Foods" was canceled.

Andrew Zimmern and Bizarre Foods was such an entertaining show. We all loved it in our house. It was very educational too. We miss it.
Me too they even erased all the episodes 😢 which really sucks i knew i shouldve
Downloaded them
❤️✨ditto😢
Agreed! My dad always watch these shows, when I was a kid, it was enjoyable, I really miss it.
Andrew Zimmern, Samantha Brown, and Anthony Bourdain were why I loved the Travel Channel. Haven't watched it in years, since they started bringing all that ghost hunter garbage.
Ah, Bourdain was my favorite
Same
Dang, I nearly forgot the crush I had for Samantha Brown.
Amen. The Travel Channel is now The Ghost Channel. I don't know why they just don't change their name.
I'm with you I miss watching Andrew Zimmer on the Travel Channel now the only thing the Travel Channel shows is Ghost Story trash
Bring him back on we love watching Andrew Zimmerman been listening to him for years
Zimmern
Lol For years, I called him Zimmerman. Only a few months ago I realized that I was wrong.
So he doubled down on stupid by insulting White people instead of Asians. How thoughtful of him. Turd.
Don't want to work for Greedy Reptilians anyway !
You can have lil Twinkle toes...
As a person from the Midwest I totally agree with Mr. Zimmern
As an Indian living in the Midwest, I agree as well lol
Truth hurts.
Anyone who disagrees is too thin skinned or doesn't want to accept the truth. American Chinese (and even Indian) restaurants aren't that authentic at all.
But, it is what it is. Owning and making a restaurant profitable is tough, esp for authentic cuisine. Not everyone is going to like it. And you may not get that stead stream of patrons.
What he said was true. I watch reruns all the time.
That just figured. I believe in Andrew Zimmern over any greedy network!
I HATE supernaturalfake crap. Bring back Andrew!
Miss Bizarre Foods. It was really interesting to see all different places and cultures
What is he is saying is true though. About 80% of Chinese restaurants are very low in quality.
I love Andrew Zimmerman!!He is awesome……….
Discovery ink should read the comments and take ( some advice, which they won't) the nonsense that most ppl dont watch off Travel HD.
Adam Richman (Man v Food) & Andrew Zimmern are great at what they do and were my absolute favorites on the Travel Channel. I could watch their shows all weekend long. Discovery made the wrong moves by letting them go. No disrespect to Casey Webb as a person, but Man v Food is unbearable to watch since he took over.
I found Andrew very entertaining. It is what it is.
Ill watch reruns of bizarre foods anyday over them fake ass ghost shows
I hate those fake ass ghosts shows they're so repetitive and annoying and boring
Absolutely
Me to.
I will never understand how they thought booting off this show for that dumbass fake shit, or "ghost hunters" would up the views.... To this day they still continue to show that bland ass unrealistic show 😑
Count me in
The Travel Channel has absolutely nothing good to watch anymore. It’s like the Paranormal Channel now.
I quit watching the Travel Channel long ago as well as TLC and Discovery.
SpookTV
Geez - why would you want to watch things on the Travel Channel that involve...y'know...travel?
Yes, the channel of the ghosts and UFOs
I ditched it for the same reason. The "play up to ignorance for profit" channel
Frankly, I quit watching the travel channel when they changed their programming focus. The name is the travel channel, not the ghost channel. When I tuned to the travel channel I wanted to see programs with Andrew Simmering or Anthony Bourdain trying cuisines around the world. I wanted to see travel information to places I would like to visit, not haunted houses I would rather avoid.
Right that’s what turned me away too
Exactly. Totally agree. Remember Lonely planet in the 2000s with Ian wright? This was a fun show to watch. America has to ruin it by some stupid race issue.
Same here .
Same with the history channel
Ghost channel is traveling into abandoned buildings in dark rooms in the middle of the night in the witching hour. Bunch of noises crying screaming. Good foods passed to unseen dramas.
shows like Bizarre Foods and No Reservations were a staple of the travel channel. Having a couple shows like this does not change the format of the channel. I loved these shows it actually taught people about different cultures and foods.
agreed!!
They always cancel the good actually interesting shows for garbage.
Exactly.... those days, I mean, 10 yrs back, most of the channels like TLC, discovery, travel channel, national geographic had some good quality TV shows....
Like the history channel went all reality show. What the hell does fake reality have to do with history ?
I had hope for History Channel when I saw Morgan Freeman promoting it. Sorry, same crap.
Television is a good mirror of society.
Thats hollywood
Zimmern was 100% right ... If you ask a Chinese from mainland China (that knows how to cook), s/he will tell you that the way they cook at home is very different from what you get at the Americanized 'Chinese restaurants.
Ive seen the Chinese restaurants owners sit down in their restaurant during lunchtime eating completely different food then what they serve lol
For that matter, any Americanized foods. Mexican restaurants that are widely known like Taco Bell are rather referred to as Tex-Mex. With many authentic Mexican recipes omitted from the menu.
@@nathanrspain how?!
I was in China a few years ago and while eating at a restaurant I overheard someone order fried ice cream, the waiter was confused, he got the chef, the chef was confused, he got the manager, the manager actually spoke decent English..... but was confused.... because why would you fry ice cream.... so the guy ordering got confused and that basically sums it up.
@@Fellowrser i worked at a Chinese restaurant and you are totally correct.
Meanwhile, the Travel Channel has zero shows pertaining to actual travel, the whole reason why we loved the channel in the first place.
True lol. That's why I still watch Rick Steve's Europe. I wish he'd do Asia though.
The irony
Great guy. I miss the show. We loved his personality and the shows content. Very fun.
I loved that show.
Me too. It was a show I never missed watching, since we had our IPTV connection....very sad that we are going to miss it....😢
same, and people can be triggered all they want, Americanized Chinese Food really is bullshit... sorry/not sorry.
I went through a hard time back in 2011, and Bizarre Foods was a release, and I shared it with him on UA-cam comment. He gave me a heart- and that heart meant so much..
I stopped watching the travel channel when they took off a real show like Andrew's for ghosts.
This was really one of my favorite shows growing up and it legitimately got me excited about trying unusual foods whenever possible.
Some of the things Andrew zimmern taught us through bizarre foods:
1. Make use of every part of the animal in cooking
2. The art of foraging
3. Sustainable agriculture
4. Sustainable farming
5. Cheap, nutritious, often underrated food, that can be found in your backyard
6. Sustainable harvesting of materials
7. Alternative food sources
8. Dying food traditions and cultures, some of which being actually good for you
And many more....
Year 2021: travel channel goes all the way to ghost hunting
Don't forget, nutty,and irony,in a good way
Nowadays
Mtv no music
History Channel no History
Travel no travel
Y' MAN HAS TOP RESPECT , .
You are absolutely on point on everything you pointed out on Andrew Zimmern. @Gimhani Kuruppu! I was obsessed with this channel. Bring it back!!
Hmmm, I don't know what you've been watching but Mr. Wokey Dokey only taught me how to mug for the camera and play up some insincere woke garbage.
I enjoyed that show.
Me too! I love that show
wtf do ghosts and supernatural nonsense have to do with travel?
it doesnt, but it gives them ratings, so it's SpookTV now.
What he said about Chinese food in the MID WEST was SPOT on and did NOT need to be APOLOGIZED for...PERIOD
Exactly! Not all are gross, but most! Crazy how speaking truth gets you cancelled.
@@Laura-nx4dm As much as I love his content, the reason he was getting cancelled was they knew would fold.
He could tell in his apology, that even toted the white guilt card.
He should’ve just kept it moving, if he wanted tl apologize, he should’ve been like, “Hey sorry I offended some but this is what I’m about. Oh well. “
The only reason I ever watched The Travel Channel was for people like Andrew Zimmern and Anthony Bourdain, God rest his soul. I still watch Andrew Zimmern on his UA-cam channel! Keep up the great work Andrew!
Ive watched some of Andrews Chinese cooking on his channel. I've been all over Asia and his Asian cooking is the real deal.
Bizarre Foods was one of my favorite shows!!! It was so interesting seeing what other people eat around the world. I don’t even watch that channel anymore because of all the awful ghost shows that seem fake as hell.
I think Andrew was responding to ppl who think American chain places like Panda Express is legit Chinese food when it's not. He wanted to make a chain of authentic Chinese places (with authentic Chinese chef/wait staff).
Chef Andrew Zimmern was, and always will be one of my food heroes.
He and Tony Bourdain got me out of my comfort zone and try new foods.
I used to watch Bizarre Foods a lot as a kid, it grossed my parents out so much XDDD But i found it fascinating and inspiring, plus i love cooking and food shows in general, so i was sad to see it was cancelled.
I always liked this guy and learned a lot about different foods and cultures from him. Hope he comes back to tv soon!!!!
My two favorite shows on the travel Channel was no reservations and bizarre food
Zimmer actually does follow authentic Chinese mastery of making food. that was his point.
I guess ghosts makes more money for the Travel Channel than travel, but I no longer watch it. Ghosts aren't real. Boo
It's minerally with a gelatinous texture. You can taste the farmyard where this animal lived. - Andrew
In the south we get the bastardized Chinese food as well. Chicken nuggets with a different sauce on it. I was spoiled in San Francisco with the many Chinese restaurants from different regions with authentic food. They haven't convinced me of finding a ghost yet. Waste of time with the paranormal shows. Reminds me of big foot shows..
Ah, the good ol' days. Andrew Zimmern, Anthony Bourdain, Adam Richmond, and for a dose of the less bizarre - Alton Brown and Emeril Lagasse. My wife and I used to watch those shows every week. Now, I hardly ever catch a cooking show.
Andrew made me love experiencing new food as child growing up… Will forever be grateful to him!
How appropriate....the Travel Channel only showing "paranormal" shows😒😒
yup, they're on their way out, G4 used to be about Video Games but then they traded their identity for some ratings, that's what you get for betraying your audience.
the chinese food in the midwest is pretty bad though..
can confirm...
Do your thing Andy... we'll follow
WHO THE F@CK IS ANDY?!?!
I LOVED his show. Then he got a little...pretentious, I'll call it. He just seemed to become a bit of a snob.
True. I noticed that too
I think when the show got big, so did his head. Guy Fieri, now that guy is pretentious.
@@squidusn71 Yes, but it kinda works for DDD, wouldn't you say?
@@misplacedcajun2325 It doesn't work for me. At least Andrew tells it what it is especially when he doesn't like something.
@@squidusn71 and a major DB....
Travel used to have travel, History used to have history, Syfy used to have sci-fi, Food used to have cooking, not competitions, HGTV used to have decorating, not real estate, etc.
"It tastes a little gamey."
YES 😅
"Grainy, irony" 🤣🤣🤣 man I loved that show.
I'm a culinary school graduate and all 'round foodie who lives in South East Asia. I eat allot of real Chinese food over here and I love it...however, I also love American Chinese cuisine and often cook it at home. Got to scratch that itch! Nothing wrong it.
except all that MSG addiction...
I grew up with travel channel. Andrew Zimmern, bourdain, and Samantha brown would bring the world to our living room and urged me to want to explore and discover other cultures. I remember zimmern said when you travel don’t think like a tourist, because anywhere you go people work and live their daily life, instead focus on the moment and the experience and people who you are sharing it with.
He didn’t say anything offensive
Honestly, I'm Chinese and I relate to what he had to say. Many of the Chinese restaurants in the US (Especially the take out places) are dishes that are Americanized and not authentic Chinese cuisine. I loved watching Bizarre Foods and could have it playing on the tv all day. I think Andrew is a genuine guy but this "woke politically correct society" has made it to where many want to just stay out of the limelight. And personally, I don't see what Ghost hunting have anything related to the Travel Channel.
Even though I’m a big paranormal fan, this show was great. I loved watching Andrew and all the unique places and food. Travel Channel really screwed up when they took this off the air.
I don't know of anyone watching the "new scary travel channel" waste of a network!
Apparently Bob Smith, who owns the Jade Dragon all-u-can eat buffet at the hillside strip mall in Topeka, Kansas was insulted.
Go to the back of any Chineese restaurant and compare it to a fast food joint. Food and grease and junk all around the rat filled dumpster. The truth hurts some people.
Fast food joint are clean for the most part. They got a big corporation watching their franchise.
I loved watching Anthony Bourdain and Andrew Zimmern. Not a fan of the current shows, so I'll endlessly watch reruns anyday with utmost pleasure
the 2 dudes @ joe beef hated this man lol
I used to work in a Chinese restaurant and one day the owner was cooking something totally I never seen. I said that’s not on the menu. He said I know, that’s for me. What we eat is different and we have to Americanize the food for Americans liking. I said oh I understand.
I would have asked for some to try.
Lol well he isn't wrong about Asian food in the midwest coming from someone that lived in Wisconsin for 2 years
I want him to go on Hot Ones because he loves the spicy stuff.
EDIT: He did!
If you walk into a western Chinese restaurant and don't hear cleavers chopping away madly turn around and run.
Andrew and Anthony are one of the few Americans in the food world I can respect for their understanding and respect on different culture foods while stepping out of their boundaries to try things most wouldn’t.
Andrew’s not wrong for calling out the fake Chinese food in America but he may have come on too strong or passionate in his defense. American Chinese food is in a category of its own just like Tex-Mex Taco Bell, it’s good as a fast food joint after a night out drinking or munchies but authentic cuisines are reserved for a true taste of culture.
Call Andrew Zimmern come to my house? I love his show also. Don’t forget the Indians.
Who cares if he makes Chinese food, as long as it tastes good, I'll eat it. Nothing wrong of criticizing American Chinese food not being a real Chinese food. If he wants to make real Chinese dishes that he learned from making them from China, let him do it.
That was a very entertaining show
Loved that show!!
Andrew did a tremendous job of running a high caliber food show. However, by 2019, people were watching less TV AND were probably burnt out on the "bizarre food" genre of tv shows. After all, how many fried cricket shows can you make?
Chinese guy here. Lived in Oklahoma. He's 100% right at least in regard to Tulsa. I ordered dan dan noodles and recieved what could only be described as diarrhea on spaghetti.
Frankly if Chinese people think it's ok to make and serve shit, I have no issues with Andrew doing what he wants.
I'm Indian, and the same goes for many Indian restaurants, lol.
It is what it is, I get it. Easy to mass produce certain dishes to make money, because you have to. The restaurant business is probably the most volatile of any small business.
Zimmerman is totally right. It's funny how angry people get over the truth.
He's not insulting Chinese cuisine or Chinese people, but the Americanized version of the food.
However, I understand why it is that way. Not everyone wants authentic ethnic foods. And when they do, they may not dine regularly. Restaurants need a steady stream of customers for revenue or else they tank, quickly. Plus, good quality and authentic food takes time, experienced chefs, and the best ingredients.
It's all about location.
That's why the better alternative is to make friends with people whose parents are foreigners, lol. BEST food is home cooked, no matter what cuisine you're into.
Fool whitey ,he doesn't know any better. 😂
I can still remember the show where he was served pickled whale blubber by an Alaskan indigenous family. He was always so gracious for families that invited them into their homes, but I don’t think he was really excited about eating that. I remember one show he said the worst thing he’s ever eaten was a tropical fruit that had a complex putrid smell. I remember him marveling that of all the gross things he’s eaten, the worst ended up being a piece of fruit.
Durian is the fruit. We have plenty in my country and I also do not like it.
He plays disc golf as well. Enjoyed watching him when they had celebrity game at Ben askrens course.
So glad to see the ghost "hunter" was wearing a mask, as to not catch COVID from any free floating apparitions.
Yeah, because, when I think of travel, I always think about ghosts and the supernatural. I swear, cable TV has become yet another wasteland. The nimrods running these cable channels have their heads completely up their asses and have zero talent in programming television. Why is "Tombstone" regularly showing on Syfy, for example? I thought that was a channel dedicated to science fiction, not Westerns. And so often it's just marathon after marathon after marathon of shows. Day-long marathons of Pawn Stars on History Channel, to cite only one common example. Every week. I'm beginning to think that actual monkeys really could program these channels with greater creativity. And the same movies get played TO DEATH on both regular cable channels and the premiums. I literally have to hunt and hunt for decent programming some days. It really sucks. TV used to be more interesting and creative and diverse when there was just 3 networks, a couple of PBS stations, and 4 or 5 independents.
Zimmern was correct in saying it. The Chinese you get in the mid-west is an Americanized version with corn starch, sugar, MSG, and lots of deep fried crap. He was trying to bring authentic mainland Chinese style cuisine to Americans. Once they try it they won't go back to the old Chinese food.
That's true. A foreign exchange student took me and my husband to a restaurant "Spicy City" in San Diego's version of Chinatown. We were the only white people there. The menu was in Chinese and the employees' English was limited. The food is delicious, and we go there whenever we want real Chinese food. I refuse to eat the overly sweet deep-fried stuff at Panda Express. It is inedible to me. Tastes differ, and I know other people love it, but it is not for me.
So. They got rid of a series COMPLETELY related to “travel”………and went balls-deep into a bunch of dreck (ghost hunting) having nothing to do with “travel”? Brilliant move, you fools. Used to watch Travel Channel a LOT. Skip right past that crap nowadays.
I miss Bizzare Foods. I loved that show
I've only had bad experiences with Chinese food in the MIdwest. No 1 Chinese buffet was definitely not No 1.
lmao
I'll be honest, I love paranormal shows. BUT.... it's called the Travel channel. Not the Paranormal channel. Please, bring back travel shows.
I used to record his shows for time shifting reasons, then it dissapear Ed, then found it on TRAVEL CHANNEL, now GONE , I certainly loved it cancel culture, I do NOT watch FOOD CHANNELanymore,,it’s plain. BS 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
apparently mashed has whole heartedly and enthusiasticly embraced "woke cancel culture" bullshit. you should be ashamed of urselves, and andrew should NOT have apologized. i wouldnt have. in fact, id double down and say it again. his comment was ENTIRELY based on the quality of "chinese" food in the mid west. authentic, chinese food is virtually impossible to find in the middle of the country, and zimmern should be praised, NOT excoriated...
The Travel Channel used to have great content, with Bourdain/Samantha Brown/and Zimmern all doing their own thing. Then suddenly I feel like the programming changed. So disappointing.
He wasn't wrong, these Chinese food places pander to low income areas and the food is awful 95 percent of the time. He should never have apologized. I might meet him in September when he comes to Ocean City, Maryland!
2006 is long ago in TV terms; he's had a great run. I think he might be back, too. It's hard to keep a good man down.
I always loved his show growing up. It was always nice and interesting to watch his shows during supper time or just to watch when I was bored. I love it a lot.
My Taiwanese wife cringes whenever I order Sweet and Sour Pork...my favorite Chinese inspired dishe. She just orders from the hastily written in Chinese menu on the wall!
Ghosts, monsters, and the paranormal….
Yet they’re worried about their viewers being offended. 🙄
Outstanding observation.
So wait, Everytime I make make an Asian dish to eat for dinner is racist???? But I shop at Asian owned markets I'll stop right away I see the error of my ways.
Love Andrew. I hope he makes a return in one form or another. He was the only reason I watched the Travel Channel.
I die a little inside every time someone says panda express is their favorite chinese restaurant.
OMG, bizarre foods was replaced by so called ghost encounters and things that go bump in the night. 😂☹️
Zimmern should just fund it himself and continue with the show he would make more money than any resturant. People are so touchy its trivial and childish.
I mean even tho his point is valid he didn't have to call american chinesse food horse shit. That's just rude.
I'm a fan of "rude" people lol.
how about teaching birth control and planned parenthood to you citizens so you don't wind up with more people that you can feed and then be forced to eat bugs and tree back???
Tbh I do agree with mr Zimmern. Because the Chinese places we do have here isn’t at all like Chinese food.
I assumed he ran out of places to visit. It’s a great show. Makes me hungry no matter how bizarre.
The Travel Channel made a mistake by axing Zimmern imo. I don't watch the channel at all anymore.
Kudo's to Andrew, from homeless to where he landed is admirable.
Thats why I don't watch television. they take a good program and replace it with junk.
Everyone mind there own business and chill out. You can't coexist if your always looking for a fight that goes for right and left.
Quit watching when he went all political. Constant trump bashing instead of food focus.
