I have admired this man for many years. Being a huge fan and watching all of his tv shows, I often wondered why he never sipped any wine or drink alcohol on the shows. Now I know. And I especially didn't know about his drug use. Regardless of what I have learned from this video, I haven't changed my views on the man whatsoever...in fact I admire him even more.
My family can not be the only one where the whole family watched every episode of Bizarre foods. I actually researched an address and sent him a letter once to thank him for an episode that meant a lot to us. He always seamed to be gracious, and genuine. You could tell he had faced challenges, which only made him feel like a real person. I know he was a big influence on my son, not to mention myself. Sorry to hear about his business failure, but I for one do not count this guy out. Just needs the right spot. We'll be back! Thanks again Andrew!!
So what? You rather see him not take advantage of an opportunity presented to him? Knowing the people in both sides of the struggle...it wouldnt surprise me if you said yes. Exactly why sobriety needs to start from you.. bc the battle is from within. But I tell you what. If you've never been in those shoes than you're just a fool...but if you're going through or have been in that position...you're represent hate on a whole different level.
Exactly..I like him, but this story is little strange to me..She keeps repeating he was a sever drug addict. Plus alcohol, pills etc...from the early pictures he doesn't looks a sever addict at all. i think he had some struggles like many, that's it. He went college, study abroad, holidays... i think they exaggerated to make the character more interesting..
High functioning. Bourdain said he was a heroin addict until cooking saved him. That and being broke, as he put it, it's hard to use when you can't earn.
Don’t scare me like that! He’s definitely controversial, but I still think he’s a pioneer in defeating the struggle of trying before denying! He’s one of my faves 😊
A.Z. is an extremely intelligent and articulate man. I enjoy his insights to many cultures via his food travels. His work provides an excellent education and promotes diversity and tolerance so lets give him a pass of those transgressions and move forward.
Transgression? He just told the truth. If the weak could jot handle the truth, then it is THEIR problem. Chinese or any other cultures' cuisine has been bastardized for so long in America by people who wants money more than integrity. That has to be changed.

The difference (I recently learned when I asked someone) is that a house (a building providing shelter and an address) and a home (a place providing familiar comfort) are not the same thing. Check this out. When there's talk about providing homes to the homeless, people bitch because they envision paying for creature comforts and luxury comparable to THEIR home. People make a different picture in their minds when talking about providing housing to the unhoused vs providing homes to the homeless. Try it with someone. Ask them to picture housing and then picture a home.

Please bring him back! He was so entertaining and knowledgeable. Loved his programs. They should have let him make a tour of those bad restaurants or send in Ramsy!
It's horsesh!t that anyone was upset about the Chinese food poser statement. He was 100% correct and the Chinese people that run these restaurants know it. They make Americanized Chinese food, it started in NYC with a chef who realized most Americans did not like actual Chinese food. He began to experiment with different ingredients and adding more sugar to sauces which pleased the Americans. There are a few "authentic" Chinese places where I live and even those have gone downhill as they need to make money and most Americans simply dont like actual Sichuan food for instance. I love it, but these good restaurants are forced to add crap like General Tso's chicken to their menus which does not have origins in China, to satisfy the Americans who expect to see the same crap on every Chinese menu...and thats why you see the same crap on nearly every Chinese menu. As a commenter below said of his family who owned one of these Americanized places...THEY dont eat that crap! You will rarely see them eating in front of the patrons but when you do; do you ever see them eating General Tso's Chicken? Not likely.
To your point, you said the guy in New York realized Americans didn’t like authentic Chinese food. So, after trying to stay true to your culture and serve authentic food, you realize people aren’t buying and you switch things up, because if you don’t your restaurant fails. Thing is, that person did the work, went through the trial and error process, and “Americanized” Chinese food was born out of necessity to provide for their families, not necessarily to dumb their authentic cuisine. So for an American to criticize actual Asians who did the “trial and error”, and adjusted out of survival, it’s disingenuous. He hadn’t done the ground work to understand why those restaurants had become “Americanized”, so to act as if he would be the savior of Chinese cuisine in America was wrong. Maybe he finally realized why they weren’t selling authentic Chinese cuisine when he opened his restaurant, that’s why when he reopened it, it had other Asian cuisines on the menu.
@@PatienceLove Yea, most of us get it. The point is his comment was no worse than a Texan saying all ribs except those you get in Texas are horseshit. To a Texan, their way is the correct way. It works that way all over the world. I was looking at cold beet soup recipes one time and the arguments in the comments about where it originated from and why this recipe was "not authentic" were funny. How a tiny Baltic country can be so belligerent about how another Baltic country claims their cold beet soup as theirs, is...interesting. You can bet a Lithuanian having cold beet soup in an American restaurant is going to have an opinion of how "authentic" it is...possibly calling it "horseshit". You can bet there are no Chinese people who think Americanized "Chinese food" is actually Chinese food. In fact, the only place I have ever seen what appeared to be an actual Chinese family eating in a "Chinese" restaurant is one that purports to serve "authentic" Chinese cuisine...and thats why I was there...actual Chinese cuisine. Sure they have General Tso's chicken and all the other "stuff" you see on every Chinese takeout menu for Americans, but they have have a second menu of ACTUAL Chinese food. That's the menu I order from, and so little English on it I have to have the server explain it...best she can in her limited English. Zimmern being "cancelled" for sentiments that even Chinese people would agree with is a construct of idiot Woke white Leftists who have nothing better to do than manipulate and ruin people.
General Tso's Chicken is basically chicken nugget with sweet and sour sauce added red food coloring. There's nothing Chinese about it LOL. I only see them made here.
@@PatienceLove The only criticizing I or Zimmern did of any Asians is the crap called Chinese food in America (and likely in the U.K./Europe) compared to actual Chinese food. To actually call most of it "Chinese food" is what is disingenuous. But to some degree, a lot of ethnic restaurants do a similar version of Americanizing their menus. To your point, that's American's fault. Many like to think they are eating ethic food, and "call it" Italian, Mexican etc. because that's what the restaurant's name themselves, but much of the menu is tweaked with the American in mind. It would be good if we could just enjoy the actual cuisine of the world the entrepreneurs came from. We bought some discount vouchers advertised for a Salvadorian restaurant. My parents love the place but I had only been there once and thought the food was just OK and the service was very slow even though they weren't busy. We needed to eat there 4 times to use up the vouchers and again, my fist impression was the food was bland and unremarkable. We started bringing our own hot sauce because they only offered habanero, and my wife always also has Tajin in her purse. Those amped the flavors up to where we prefer. Over three more meals we found the level of flavor varied but generally, most things still bland. Over that time I did a little research and found that Salvadorian food IS much more mild than Mexican food, so they seemed to be sticking to their roots and their reviews are fantastic. Apparently most people like bland, unremarkable food!
He and Bourdain made me want to get out of my comfort zone and dive into different cultures and food. I have no ill feelings to what he said, nor did I think it was that big of a deal. I really appreciate both he and Bourdain for pushing me to try something different.
That’s the problem with the United States today. We say you have free speech, but when anyone speaks their truth, they get canceled. What he said was not bad at all!
"Free Speech" means that you have the ability to say what you want, it doesn't mean that you are "free" from repercussion from what you say. He expressed his right to free speech by being able to say what he said in that interview, but was then had to face the repercussions from saying what he said. Our right to say what we want is protected by the 1st amendment, but the 1st amendment does not protect us from the reactions to what we say. Do I believe he deserved to what happened to him, No, not at all. As long time fan of him and his show, and who's life story really was inspirational to me, it really sucked to hear what was happening to him. But what I do believe is, that everyone, especially those have such platform where their words reach so many people and have such big influence, should understand what they say has repercussions, both good or bad, and we always need to remember that.
Usually in the US and other Western "Democratic" countries, if someone mentions another culture in less than glowing positivty, it is usually people from other cultures that get upset and cancel. I am sure it is not Asians or Chinese people that cancelled Andrew, but the liberal, woke, less than bright people we see more often nowadays.

I'm glad and inspired that he recovered from all this stuff . I wish him well , and thank him for all the enjoyment he gave me with his food shows.
Enjoyed many of his travel shows, many were too bizarre. Wasn’t aware of his childhood challenges. I pray for him and that he prays for himself. Thanks

My husband and I watched him often and really like his personality. I never knew about his struggles with addiction but I'm familiar with addiction. Sad life growing up and I felt bad his marriage didn't work out also. Thanks for the Video!
No he wasn’t. He was criticizing Chinese restaurants that “Americanized” their menus out of necessity. Which he had no room to do, because most Americans would not be flocking to Chinese restaurants if they were serving authentic Chinese food. He realized that after opening his restaurant, that’s why he changed the menu.
How horrible it must have been to have to go through that at 13. I went through similar experiences at 30 when my grandmother passed but luckily I wasn’t abandoned at that young of an age. Im so glad he overcame everything ❤
The title doesn't follow the actual video. Many probably saw it figured that Zimmern is close to death or something tragic like that. He has been clean of addiction for years, so where is that "Sadder and Sadder" part of the story? If anything he recovered and turned his life around - it got better, and better.
So tragedy is basically an unhappy ending. AND your topic is Zimmern "JUST" get sadder and sadder. HE went through some things and his life got BETTER AND BETTER. YOU need to reword you heading b/c it's TOTALLY OFF!!!
What a good man. Shows what a person can do to overcome adversity. He is a very good example to people that use every excuse not to comet getting and staying sober. Thank you Andrew.
I’ve always been a fan of Andrew Zimmern. I’m a Chinese American who loves authentic and good Chinese food which is rare even in california where there are a lot of options. There are, however, lots of Americanized Chinese food which does appeal to many people and which I can appreciate for what it is, understanding that the term “Chinese food” is a generalized term. I think his heart was in the right place, wanting to bring to the Midwest a more authentic understanding of Chinese food. Perhaps his inelegant generalization of Asian cuisine in the Midwest might have not been PC. I am, nonetheless, a complete fan. I wish him all the best.
One thing is for sure... AZ paved the way for many traveling foodies out here now. But he will always be the pioneer of bizarre foods. He accepted bizarre foods first, and we accepted them second. Much appreciation Andrew!!❤
I always loved Andrew Z. The fact that most of us did not know his about his struggles in private life, shows one more time, when you see somebody do not judge.
I was a teenager watching bizarre foods with andrew. Hearing his life story is wild! I never would have imagined he been through all that. Definitely one of best tv show hosts! I wish the best for him
It was an self serving comment that he made to make himself and his restaurant look better. The Chinese food that is commonly known in North America might not be authentic, but that doesn't mean it's not good. When Chinese immigrants first came to North America, they had to adapt their recipes based on what ingredients that were available here. They also adapted their recipes to appeal to more people. Absolutely nothing wrong with that. It is absolutely absurd that so many people are now talking down on westernized Chinese food that they have probably enjoyed in the past.
First impressions of Mr. Zimmern is that of a personable, well traveled, career minded bear of a man. I would never have thought of all the many journeys he had traversed. Kudos and applause for his ventures. Stay safe and remain grateful.
People get offended over the stupidest things. I don’t think he meant harm with his comment on American Chinese food. Foreign foods always taste totally different in different countries and it’s difficult to capture the true flavor.
Ohh my goodness. . I'm devastated at learning of these such things. I found his bravado at being an adventurous taster to be almost a parallel of my own wantings. I'm teaching my granddaughter to be an adventurous eater. Perhaps this will give Andrew lasting hope. Blessings from my world to yours Andrew. 🙏
I don’t think what he said is wrong. I also live in St Paul MN and a lot of the Chinese restaurants really do just make terrible Americanised food that isn’t very Chinese any longer. I used to go to this place called HongKong Garden because they actually had a traditional menu, and a regular menu, and you could order either non traditional dishes or from the dishes that were more traditional Chinese. Everything wasn’t Americanised and you could get congee, and fish dishes that no one else had in town there. I have met Andrew before. He has done things for the community that he does not speak about. He is not racist he just wanted places to serve the food of their actual homelands instead of changing it too much.

He wasn’t really too ostentatious and I thought the shows were great. Addiction is so tragic. I also think that it was unfair to cancel him like they did because of his commentaries. We all know that those Chinese restaurants all over the country are just second grade places. we know this. I hope that he regains some of his stature, and that he can become even more of what he would like to be especially as an ex and as a dad. wow never knew he went through so much. always seemed stable and sure of himself during the prime of his show
May God continue to protect and bless him, and many others who are going through similar situations.
lol He's Jewish.
Andrew is human, just like the rest of us. He's had struggles and tried to overcome them. Stay strong, Andrew! Minnesota is proud to have you as a resident and neighbor.
I recently saw him on the Jason Show based out of the Twin Cities A few weeks ago. He is still out and about.
I really loved his show
My family can not be the only one where the whole family watched every episode of Bizarre foods.
Good on him and his consistent journey of recovery
Imagine being a drug addict that can study cooking abroad!? Most addicts i know don't leave the neighborhood
@@steve293 why so emotional about my comment? I was simply stating how blessed he was
Exactly..I like him, but this story is little strange to me..She keeps repeating he was a sever drug addict.

I loved watching Andrew Zimmern's show on Travel Channel, and have missed not seeing it anymore. Great show, and I hope he comes back.
I miss Andrew Zimmern on TV, his shows were always exciting. I hope and pray he gets another show. God bless him.
Don’t scare me like that! He’s definitely controversial, but I still think he’s a pioneer in defeating the struggle of trying before denying! He’s one of my faves 😊
Ditto
How is saying "unhoused" more compassionate that saying "homeless?" They're the same thing.
You do know that a “jungle” is a “rainforest”?
Yea I agree w you
A.Z. is an extremely intelligent and articulate man. I enjoy his insights to many cultures via his food travels. His work provides an excellent education and promotes diversity and tolerance so lets give him a pass of those transgressions and move forward.
he is creative af.
Transgression? He just told the truth. If the weak could jot handle the truth, then it is THEIR problem. Chinese or any other cultures' cuisine has been bastardized for so long in America by people who wants money more than integrity. That has to be changed.
I like Andrew Zimmern ! Every time He's on TV, I either watch it or I recorded on my DVR ! I was not only sad , But sad for the reason that Anthony Bourdain took His Own life !!! Another one of the great people that we have lost In My lifetime !
ps. Anthony ? I don't remember My whole year of junior high !!!
You're Not Alone My Friend !
Agreed
Andrew has a lot of support from Canada. God Bless him and his family
He should start his own show. A lot of people are doing it and are successful! Wish him all the best
Unhoused? Is that the same thing as being homeless? Why can't we just say that? This is getting ridiculous.
The new democratic word for, they mess up the country and want to throw the blame on someone else.
Ridiculous? Isn't that the same as saying silly? Why can't we just say that? This is getting silly
@@bignickdangerpimp I can't believe she wants us to use the word ridiculous. Can't we just say silly? What's wrong with that? This is getting silly. Who does she think I am, a thesaurus
sure they are. the distintion is in a person's head.

Good luck Andrew. I always enjoyed your show(s)and wish you good luck!
My top two food shows ever have been with Andrew Zimmerman and Anthony Bourdain. Hands down.
Love Andrew Zimmern
I love his show. He brings a lot of joy 😘
As a longtime fan of Bizarre Foods, I'm kind of shocked that I didn't know any of this about Andrew. Wow, my man, you are much more than I ever gave you credit for. Stay strong.
Please bring him back! He was so entertaining and knowledgeable. Loved his programs. They should have let him make a tour of those bad restaurants or send in Ramsy!
I always loved his show Bizarrd Foods. The fact that he could eat things he found gross, he never made the people feel bad. ❤❤❤❤❤
Those awful "Chinese" buffets in the midwest ARE terrible...
Because the world is sensitive
He,is 100 percent correct! The truth hurts, but it is still the truth!
People are way too sensitive these days. Grow a spine, people!
Agree!
Ah yes, “woke” … the favourite idiotic hate word used by fragile little … well…. gullible nuts.
I've been a fan of Andrew Zimmerman and still am with his show on "Tastemade". I have even more respect for the man after hearing his story. God speed to you Mr. Zimmerman.
Dude is a legend--and overcame the impossible.
Sad - he was shut down for speaking the truth.
America loves a comeback story. Good luck Andrew.
He got cancelled for that? BS, that's ridiculous
Sadly, he’s absolutely correct the Chinese food served in the Midwest is trash.
I stopped at unhoused. The word homeless is perfectly fine and doesn't need to be sanitized. Unhoused implies that it was someone else's fault the was homeless.
Interesting backstory and an interesting guy
Andrew Zimmern .. bizarre foods! Great show!!!!!! 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼one of my favorites! We all have problems and family problems!
I also miss watching Andrew. I think he’s great.
I miss his program..he brought so much joy and fun to the world….he’s been through a lot but he was able to gain the strength to carry on and worked through. We hope to see you again on any platform / social media. In my opinion you would be met with open arms from all who miss seeing you…💕💐
I agree with Andrew about the Chinese restaurant thing. Where I'm from the Chinese food sucks. The rice is like gravel and the chicken is like bricks. It's really salty. The food is horrible bad.
Tragedy ? What a triumph ! Never knew about his life and his struggles with addiction till now. I loved Bizarre Foods . Still enjoy the repeats on TV . I'm a Sri Lankan Australian , and I know where Andrew Zimmern is coming from . We can laugh at ourselves . We know about the food authenticity issues . Anyway . I'm glad and inspired that he recovered from all this stuff . I wish him well , and thank him for all the enjoyment he gave me with his food shows.
Please do a reboot of Bizarre Foods!
He was always my favorite. Bizarre foods was the best show on tv! Paved the way for all the youtube content i know and love today!
Cool chef
Enjoyed many of his travel shows, many were too bizarre. Wasn’t aware of his childhood challenges. I pray for him and that he prays for himself. Thanks
Yep, instead of brilliant and entertaining people like Zimmern, we are stuck with Guy Fieri, and fake ghost hunting shows. I quit watching both Travel Channel and Food Network.
My husband and I watched him often and really like his personality. I never knew about his struggles with addiction but I'm familiar with addiction. Sad life growing up and I felt bad his marriage didn't work out also. Thanks for the Video!
Wow, he's come along way.
Love you Andrew. Miss your show please put Andrew back on tv. Watched his show for years. 2:54
I agree
What was wrong with that statement? He was pointing out the restaurants that poorly try to imitate authentic Chinese style cooking. Smh
I’m asian from the Midwest and there are a lot of horrible Chinese restaurants there.
Thank you for sharing. Bless this family.😊
The title doesn't follow the actual video. Many probably saw it figured that Zimmern is close to death or something tragic like that. He has been clean of addiction for years, so where is that "Sadder and Sadder" part of the story? If anything he recovered and turned his life around - it got better, and better.
It's called homeless. Not unhoused.
Prayers 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
What a click bait title! He is a success as a whole with some scars! That’s what makes him relatable. I appreciate who he is and what he does.
Love this man ❤ never knew about any of his struggles. 🥺
Prayers for him. Hope he gets another show.
"Unhoused"? C'mon
I would love to see him in a new show. I’m so sorry about his divorce. But glad his son is doing better. I love that man.
WHO was serving a 13yr old booze off family credit??? The 60's was wild 😂
I\I’ve been a fan of Andrew Zimmern for years. I had no idea that he faced so many challenges and setbacks.
I miss the days when he was called "Andrew Zimmerman". Mandela effect strikes again!
Right. 🤔
One thing is for sure... AZ paved the way for many traveling foodies out here now. But he will always be the pioneer of bizarre foods. He accepted bizarre foods first, and we accepted them second. Much appreciation Andrew!!❤
Cocaine one hell of a drug😅
I always loved Andrew Z. The fact that most of us did not know his about his struggles in private life, shows one more time, when you see somebody do not judge.
We only see what’s in front of us we never know what’s happening behind the camera -
I was a teenager watching bizarre foods with andrew.
Agree 100.
I always wondered what happened to him. He was one my faves to watch. Thank you. I’m glad his doing good now. 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
I Miss his show and Bourdain watch their reruns wish he could bring it back
That was the saddest story ever told. I cried the whole way through, and as you are reading this, I am still crying.
I think his dad just wanted to have a kid to cross it off his list.
Really sad about his mom. That’s really tough
Great bio on Andrew Zimmerman, safe well.
I never knew Andrew Zimmern had such issues. I have been watching his shows for years and will continue to. Best of Luck to you Andrew!
You are the best and number one to me 💯 when you went to my country Trinidad 🇹🇹 you give out food a 10 and that was so beautiful thanks and much love ❤️ ❤️
What a life! I did not know this of him. I would love to see Zimmern become the host of a new show yes. I loved his home style presentation. Second chances are really really Important for people who have striven to change their lives for the better. I hope he gets that. Best of luck to him.
