I think Tywin struggles to be a father to his own kids because they don't match his expectations. Arya on the other hand is a pleasant surprise, a highborn girl posing as a commoner makes him interested to learn more, and her intelligence and sheer nerve made him respect her. It's respect for someone that allows him to be kind, or at least something resembling kind. boils down to GRRM and his ability to create such captivating scenarios that push the limits of all characters. Although he did use Roose Bolton in the books, D&D def made the right choice with Tywin here.
“You’re too smart for your own good.” It sounds like a straightforward line to conclude the conversation but there are layers to it. Tywin is a man who appreciates wisdom, as stated later on when he gives a lecture on its importance to a great king. At the same time, he is also very experienced. Wisdom grants the ability to derive more detailed and impactful lessons from experience. A combination of these traits during wartime can take a heavy toll on whomever possesses them. It’s perhaps not the best thing for a child to have… especially one who seems to be as inquisitive and impulsive as this girl whom he’s growing fond of.
@@StuntcatTV Intelligence is the foundation of wisdom. If Arya demonstrates a high level of intelligence, she thus possesses a high capacity for wisdom. Someone like Tywin would definitely recognize that.
Tywin is able to recognize that Arya is not only whip smart (dressing as a boy, speaking her mind, even lying about where she is from) but book smart (literate, knowledgeable about history, and speaking properly). The last three are only available to girls of a certain level of wealth and status. Tywin tries to trick her many times into Arya revealing herself as a Stark.
Tywin is fond of Arya, but he doesn’t suffer sentimentality. Some think he’s being kind by allowing Arya to eat, but in a scene before, the commander died from poisoning, so Tywin is using her to see if his food has been poisoned as well. It’s such a wonderful, subtle moment that shows that Tywin has the capacity for kindness, but his practicality and self-preservation are still his major priorities.
But also testing her by turning his back while she had sharp knife. Testing her mettle with dialog, testing her courage with the potentially poisoned food and testing her patience by leaving her with the knife.

You see, of one's kin one entertains 'expectations'. And THOSE are usually a damper on most relationships. He has no expectations of this servant girl. She piques his interest and constitutes a pleasant distraction from his duties and obligations. That is all. After which, her destiny is not on him.
It’s almost cute when you realize the only time Tywin laughs in the series is when Arya makes a comment that reminds him of Cersei. Almost like he’s remembering his daughter fondly. Adds an affection edge to an otherwise cruel father
In the books I believe it's said that he was so humorless that with the exception of his wife, that he adored - he'd only laughed twice in his adult life.

Vinicius Villela he absolutely wouldn’t have her executed. Otherwise he’d have had Sansa executed too. Having a live Stark was much more valuable than a dead Stark
Arya making tywin laugh with such a throwaway comment is actually one of my favourite moments in the whole show. Tywin wasnt half as evil as everyone makes him out to be. He just had the rotten luck of having a stupid father and spolit children. With nothing else to invest in, he simply did the best he could to secure the next generation.
Oh no, Tywin was absolutely ruthless and evil. But people are multi-faceted, and even cruel, manipulative, and ruthless people can have things they like, and people they care about, and things that bring them joy. That doesn't make them less evil, it just makes them not a one dimensional cartoon villain. Tywin is the *reason* his kids are the way they are. His neglect, pressure, and abuse made them into monsters in his own image.
Tywin has a fondness and admiration for Arya to the point where he won’t bust her for obviously having an agenda. Tywin is not fooled for a moment, even after her clever cover of why she speaks proper (properly!) He knows she’s high born and undercover for some reason, but doesn’t feel threatened and so enjoys his time with her, with no intention of outing her.
I don't think he thinks she's undercover, he figured out she was posing as a boy for safety reasons earlier, he's making the same assumption again, that she is posing as a commoner, because if it became known that she's "high born" someone might think of using her for a ransom. He respects her thinking, he doesn't think she has a nefarious reason for hiding who she is, just that situations have happened, and that she is doing what she needs to do to survive. The good thing about this scene is that it really establishes that there are noble houses beyond the major ones, something that you see with Robb Starks eventual wife and Brienne. (and played upon much later in the series)
That moment at 4:34 between Arya and Tywin is incredible. So much is communicated in those few seconds and words, great chemistry between these two characters.
It looked like he was as warm with Tommen. It's just the tragedy of Tywin that if he had worked as hard raising his children and grandchildren as he did "preparing their legacy", things would have worked out better for everyone.
After seeing tywin interaction with arya, i can't help but think that part of Tywin's bitterness towards his children was caused by the lack of "worthy" grandchildren. Joffrey was a spoiled lunatic, Myrcella begun to show some intelligence later, and tommen was a bit of a pushover. I think that the big old lion, could have secretly yearned for some grandchildren with whom he could spend some time with and mold them himself.
This will always be one of my favorite scenes in the entire series. It's a delight how Arya showed her wits against Tywin. Tywin has this "proud dad look" when Arya retells the story of the Targaryens
This is one of my favorite scenes from either character, the show's creators made an excellent choice in deviating from the books to add these little compassionate gestures from Tywin Lannister.
It's neither. Cersei hated being female. She wanted to have Jaime's life. Part of the reason she is so bitter is because she was forced into being what women were forced to be. I'm sure a similar exchange happened between her and Tywin many times when she was young. We shouldn't hate Cersei so much. She serves as a reverse mirror to many characters. This is just one example. Arya got to live the life she wanted, Cersei didn't. There are many other instances that formed her to be the mean, resentful, hateful woman she is as an adults. She went through most of the same things the protagonists of this show suffered through but with a key difference. Cersei never had 'good' parents to guide her, only Tywin's ruthlessness was really taught. Not honor or kindness like the stark children. The stark children recieved many gifts to make them likable. She did not.
Love how they’re supposed to be natural enemies and would give each other up in a heartbeat should the circumstances of been different yet admire like and unwittingly learn so much from each other. So many reasons why early thrones is a masterpiece
To all of you who find this cute or humanizing: you *do* realize that regardless of the dinner conversation, Tywin was mostly just using Arya as a taster in case the food was poisoned as well, right? Remember what immediately preceded this scene, and then remember how pragmatic Tywin is.
He is a powerful man so it shouldn't be surprising that he valued his life more than a simple servant girl.He had to be cautious especially in that environment.
"You are too smart for your own good, has anyone told you that?" He knows she just pulled that out of thin air but its such a good lie, he is just going to play along with it. Love this whole scene!!
This is my favorite Tywin scene in GOT. It proves Charles dance (actor for Tywin) right. He’s not a bad man, just a strong and intense character who does horrible things for the betterment of his family
he sentenced his son to death then slept with his girlfriend the night prior to the execution. all this while knowing tyrion was innocent and preaching about not allowing whores into the castle. oh, and lets not mention what he did to tyrions first wife. tywin is probably my fav character but lets not sanitize him
not to be pedantic, but doing terrible things for the betterment(read, financial/political gain) of your family makes you a bad man. stealing a loaf of bread to feed your starving kids is one thing. murdering thousands of people just for political gain is a completely different thing.
It's funny. At the end of this, he gently (at least by his standards) tells Arya "Go on." Whereas everyone else ever in the show he commands them "Go." Subtle writing choices like that are what make it a great show, I can't wait to see the last few seasons!
Love their chemistry. Tywin was able to catch some of her lies throughout their time together and I believe despite being enemies, they could’ve been friends
What I found most interesting is the fact that they both found some sort of safety in each other's company. Arya is telling the stories of the Targaryans with a child like wonder. You don't see much of that at all after Ned is killed. But she felt safe to be a child with Tywin. She knew he wouldn't hurt her from the second he saved her from one of his guards. And though Tywin knew she wasn't who she said she was, he was enough steps ahead of her to not worry about it too much. He really liked her, and gave her a side of him he gave no one else in the show. It was like it was the only place for both of them to drop their defenses and just be human again for a bit.
The most interesting thing is.. Lord Tywin knows there is more to her. He knows she's lying, and he knows she is not who she says she is. And yet he sees something in her that he likes. Something more natural than what Cersei wanted to be, something more clever, as well as something more sinister. He knew she likely had more nefarious plans than what she was posing as. He instead tested how well she played the game, and liked how she played it. Considering the darkness inside of Arya, she was likely the closest to the things Tywin wanted in his off-spring, almost like the daughter he *wished* Cersei had been. Scenes like this between the two of them really do capture that feeling, he knows she's lying from the get go, and calls her out/teaches her about her mistakes, which would serve her later. I'm guessing he feels, whomever she is, she will go on to do other things when she's done pretending there, but was not a threat to him, so he actually enjoyed the company of a child he likely very much wished his own children had started out being. These scenes are masterful in their execution of it. That was actually a *proud* smile from Tywin at the end. He probably didn't have very many when it came to his own, but he did for Arya, and that says a lot about why he liked conversing with her so, even when he knew she was not who she said she was. That smile he gives at the end it's almost as if he'd wished his other children had been *what* she already is back when he was raising them. Both Jaimie and Cersei's weaknesses(Ambition for Jaime and Wit for Cersei) are Arya's strengths and he saw that in her. In many ways, Arya is the child he wished for, but never got.
Well reasoned! Honestly, the Tywin and Arya scene are probably my favorites from the whole series. There's so menace about half an inch away, and yet on top of that they're witty and seem to regard each other with both respect and affection. The dynamic is *delicious*.
The fact that he held for so long that he already knew what she was and only told her when she got cocky to remind her to watch her steps was a beautiful father daughter moment.
This was one of my favorite scenes from the show, and one of the reasons why, even though he is definitely one of the villains of the series, Tywin is also one of my favorite characters. You see him try to teach his children this as well, but Tywin is never needlessly cruel or arrogant or domineering. Cersie throws her power around just for the sake of reminding everyone how strong she is. Tyrion is brilliant, but his defense mechanisms also make him overconfident and obnoxious to people sometimes. Tywin understands that even your enemies deserve at least enough respect to take them seriously. I always loved this scene because it shows that he is insightful and perceptive. He knows there's something different about Arya, but it's clear he's not interested in finding out what it is. As long as she behaves, he's content to let her keep up her little ruse. And you can see his appreciation for her game after she leaves the room.
I love how layered this scene is. He's a clever man but clearly has no interest in female warrior, particularly Dragon Riding Queens- which is why Dany was able to grow so much in power while he was about.
This scene here actually makes me think.. Was tywin really an evil person or just someone who would go to any extent for his family (like everyone else on this show)
Is everyone forgetting how Tywin sicced the Mountain and Co on Princess Elia (raping/murdering her), Rhaenys (being stabbed 50 times) and baby Aegon (head smashed against the wall)? You might not say that's evil because it had to be done, but I'd disagree.
It’s insane that Tywin is fully aware that she is lying and does nothing. It’s almost as if he’s aware of his role in the story and knows that even though he will be who he must for the narrative, he knows the story isn’t about him
When she says, "from my father"......man. I didn't know three small words could be so powerful. Maisie was an incredible actress for the first 3 seasons specifically
I cant help but imagine that these 2 would have had an incredible arc together. Arya could have learned so much from Tywin about strategy and war. I really wish they had found a way to make this duo have a bigger story.
Notice how at the beginning, Tywin is drawing out the conversation while Arya eats. At first he's only trying to discretely test the treachery of the cooks at Harrenhall, but as his curiosity piques, he sits down and starts to wonder about this girl, so much so that he ends up giving her subtle warnings on how to pull off a more convincing act. Tywin was forged by fire and learned to do unspeakable things for family and legacy, but he was a far cry from being an evil man.
I love Tywin’s subtle little gesture right after the “taught us how to speak proper- properly!” in 4:31. You can tell he’s got her game figured out, but he’s fond of her enough to be amused when she quickly thinks up a way to get herself out of the pinch. Tywin respects a resourceful person who’s quick of feet and mind. It’s a shame his flaw is caring about the Lannister’s name and legacy so much, otherwise he’d have been an amazing statesman, military commander AND father (he already is the first three). Also, Charles Dance’s interpretation is absolutely stellar.
Honestly I feel like this is one of the best scenes in the series. It shows a different side to Tywin and gives you sympathy towards his life and his goals. It showed how names determine your allies and enemies, not ones person.
Gods be good, this scene is amazing. It's incredible the chemistry that Dance and Williams are able to conjure despite their vast age / experience difference. Tywin seems genuinely fascinated by Arya. It's wonderful.
I honestly love seeing these two together. He immediately caught on that she's a high born girl posing as a commoner but instead of having her head or prying what her real house is, he simply enjoys sparring with her through words. Meanwhile, she's learning how to navigate in a situation like this while also learning a few tricks from Tywin because he is guiding her and teaching her how to think through strategies and act as a commoner, a role he only has observed from afar but well enough to help her better her acting. The fact that she could be clever back is a whole other thing tho haha
Class rank is difficult to hide. Tywin picked up on it right away. One of the reasons Trump carries the giant bolder on his shoulder. He's too dumb to realize class doesn't matter, yet smart enough to know it does in the ways he wishes he had it. I only wish they had carried on with this storyline a bit further. Both actors were exceptional.
Tywin is the essence of what a good lord, and man by extension, should ve. Strong and fearful when necessary, but respected, honest in what he says and means to do, and empathetic when it is properly called for. Those who end up meeting him know right off that this is someone who isn't to be trifled with casually, but also someone who if presented with diligence will be met with friendship/assistance.
I absolutely adore this relationship, and I'm glad they changed the book's narrative slightly to include it. Part of me kinda wishes they'd met again, when Arya wasn't hiding who she was anymore, just to see how Tywin would've reacted. I think he would've had a lot of admiration for her, or at the very least respect.
Love the back and forth, the subtle meanings behind everything, the changes in expression. Really fantastic production. Wish there were more scenes between them.

I love how much of this scene is Arya trying to sort of interrogate and analyze Tywin without realizing it’s the other way around, he’s examining her with almost no questions. She poses as a commoner but eats with a knife and fork and decent table manners, says she eats a lot, knows details of history even he doesn’t remember, and uses polished and formal language. I wish they had a few more of these... it was a brilliant and intriguing plot move to put Arya and Tywin together like this
exactly! i loved it!
He was making her test the food for poison..
I figure Tywin found sparring with Arya's wit more entertaining than anything else he could do when he got down time at Harrenhall, hence why he seemed to spend a significant amount of time with her even when she wasn't performing her duties as a cupbearer.
And now all arya does is one liners and one night stands
Imagine if Arya was the daughter of Tywin. They'd be unstoppable
I think Tywin would be proud if his daughter becomes a faceless man... :D strong killing machine :D with an adorable side too :D

@@thamayor6324 that's what they're saying. 🙄
“You’re too smart for your own good.”
It sounds like a straightforward line to conclude the conversation but there are layers to it.
Except that this scene is about intelligence, not wisdom
@@StuntcatTV Intelligence is the foundation of wisdom. If Arya demonstrates a high level of intelligence, she thus possesses a high capacity for wisdom. Someone like Tywin would definitely recognize that.
This is a top tier comment, of high-born understanding
Tywin is able to recognize that Arya is not only whip smart (dressing as a boy, speaking her mind, even lying about where she is from) but book smart (literate, knowledgeable about history, and speaking properly). The last three are only available to girls of a certain level of wealth and status. Tywin tries to trick her many times into Arya revealing herself as a Stark.
@@courtneywalmsley8284 yes re-watching that scene does make me wonder how much he knew.
That’s a great analysis. Never thought of that being the reasoning before.
This is a game of chess. He knows full well she is of noble birth, though not of which house. He was doing all he could to wear her down so she would slip up. But he enjoys the game as he liked to clash whits with someone with intelligence. She played well, but eventually, had she stayed any longer, he would have gotten the answer he wanted.

One of the reasons I loved the middle seasons of this series. So many great conversations like this.
I’d always wanted him to know who Arya really was before he died just to see the look on his face! A Stark, right under his nose and too clever to have gotten away with it too!
Vinicius Villela he absolutely wouldn’t have her executed. Otherwise he’d have had Sansa executed too. Having a live Stark was much more valuable than a dead Stark
And then right before he does he says, "I knew who she is and where she came from all along. If only I could ha hav.... (Dead)
I think regardless he would be proud of her and not kill her. To him, she was much what he wanted in a girl
"You remind me of my daughter" What he really meant was "I wish my daughter had at least half a brain like yours".
He did order the rape and murder of a woman and her children. Probably one among many atrocities
Tywin smile at the end of the scene... Tells you he enjoys his conversations with Arya... "all the fun with none of the consequences...
He goes into straight grandpa mode by telling stories.

“You remind me of my Daughter.”
Is that an insult or a compliment?
Yes
@@confusedrealm7047 Hahahahahahahah!
She reminds him of the daughter he wished he'd had.
@@uwu-ul9mm Hate Cersei all you want, but she genuinely cares for her children. That's her one redeeming quality.

He is a powerful man so it shouldn't be surprising that he valued his life more than a simple servant girl.He had to be cautious especially in that environment.

"Do you know what a legacy is?"
Yes... it's planting seeds in a garden you never get to see.
tywin never smiles...look at him at the end of the scene =)
This is my favorite Tywin scene in GOT. It proves Charles dance (actor for Tywin) right. He’s not a bad man, just a strong and intense character who does horrible things for the betterment of his family
he sentenced his son to death then slept with his girlfriend the night prior to the execution. all this while knowing tyrion was innocent and preaching about not allowing whores into the castle. oh, and lets not mention what he did to tyrions first wife. tywin is probably my fav character but lets not sanitize him
More like for his idea of family, some abstract legacy. He didn't really give a crap about his own children.
not to be pedantic, but doing terrible things for the betterment(read, financial/political gain) of your family makes you a bad man.
stealing a loaf of bread to feed your starving kids is one thing.
murdering thousands of people just for political gain is a completely different thing.
Isn't "doing horrible things for some reason X" basically what evil is?
Oh boy.
It's funny. At the end of this, he gently (at least by his standards) tells Arya "Go on." Whereas everyone else ever in the show he commands them "Go."
Subtle writing choices like that are what make it a great show, I can't wait to see the last few seasons!
Hahaha, good one.
I was going to say "this aged poorly" but then I saw what you did there. Well done.
Trust me you can wait… in fact take your time 😳
When I read this I thought it was 5 years old, RIP.
He alway gives orders to people, to arya he gave permission. Thus the difference.
Honestly I miss these types of scenes so much. Tywin always had the best exchanges 😭😭😭
We are lucky he died before the writing died, poor Tyrion didnt have that luck
LOL Tywin would despise Arya as his daughter. Just look how he treats Cersei when she refuses to marry, or Jaime because he cannot.
The fact that he held for so long that he already knew what she was and only told her when she got cocky to remind her to watch her steps was a beautiful father daughter moment.
0:00-0:35 is like every damn grandparent lmaoo
Sit! Eat.
"I eat a lot. I just dont grow. " i love that pretty little killer
Nah, he's checking to see how educated she is.
This scene here actually makes me think.. Was tywin really an evil person or just someone who would go to any extent for his family (like everyone else on this show)
Tywin was never evil. Ruthless but not evil. Same cannot be said for Cersei and Joff.
@@MrYouarethecancer bruh idk ab that; cersei and joffrey are cruel

It’s insane that Tywin is fully aware that she is lying and does nothing. It’s almost as if he’s aware of his role in the story and knows that even though he will be who he must for the narrative, he knows the story isn’t about him

I cant help but imagine that these 2 would have had an incredible arc together. Arya could have learned so much from Tywin about strategy and war. I really wish they had found a way to make this duo have a bigger story.
Tyrion is not a fool. I think they carried it as far as they could without making it too unbelievable.
4:46 'Gooooood why couldn't ONE of my kids be like her?!?!'
There is one, but he hates him
When people claim Game of Thrones is well written .. this scene should be used as proof
Yes but RR Martin has no part in season 8, no build up or anything all because he is still writing the book.
YoungV Sinatra24 This scene never happened in the books though.
It was, anyways. The newer seasons are half Michael Bay, half soap opera.
Was
da ra hell no i we want dragons and zombies fuck this slow pace novela
I love Tywin’s subtle little gesture right after the “taught us how to speak proper- properly!” in 4:31.
You can tell he’s got her game figured out, but he’s fond of her enough to be amused when she quickly thinks up a way to get herself out of the pinch. Tywin respects a resourceful person who’s quick of feet and mind. It’s a shame his flaw is caring about the Lannister’s name and legacy so much, otherwise he’d have been an amazing statesman, military commander AND father (he already is the first three).
Also, Charles Dance’s interpretation is absolutely stellar.
I really love their relationship, some of the best written characters in the show. And they play off of one another really well.
It was this scene where I really started to like Tywin. He's harsh and cold on the outside, but has a big heart for kids.
Except for his own son, Tyrion
These Arya Tywin and Arya Sandor scenes are the best of the whole show. Just perfect
Charles Dance is a magnificent actor
Honestly I feel like this is one of the best scenes in the series. It shows a different side to Tywin and gives you sympathy towards his life and his goals. It showed how names determine your allies and enemies, not ones person.
Gods be good, this scene is amazing. It's incredible the chemistry that Dance and Williams are able to conjure despite their vast age / experience difference. Tywin seems genuinely fascinated by Arya. It's wonderful.
The Dialogue keeps me coming back. Simply superb! ✊🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿
I actually like this.,.. he was kind to her... a bit of compassion.
Aegon and his his sisters changed the game, foreshadowing?
Nope
I love how he clearly knows who she is but enjoys her company so much he doesn't even care
man these Arya and Tywin scenes bring a smile to my face, the acting and writting was so good back then.
Too bad that he never learned who his cup bearer actually was...
I love Tywin's smile at the end. He very much enjoyed their conversation.
Bloody hell this show was such a masterpiece! how in the 7 kingdoms did they fuck this up so spectacularly?!
I have never seen him smile throughout the whole show except with Arya
One of my greatest sadness is that we never got to see Tywin’s reaction when he realized that he was talking to Arya Stark
Ya Iron Mike would’ve knocked Arya out
Class rank is difficult to hide.
3:37. The slight increase in pitch and the tiny crack in voice when she says 'My father...' is so amazing. She still can't believe her father is dead
