Had he been able-bodied he'd have gone any of 1000 other routes but he'd not be the man he is today. As the baby son he'd also be heir to Castley Rock..thus removing all the motivation for his story in the first 3 books
@@criert135 I'd like to think Tyrion would be a Tywin clone. He was a lot like Tywin as it is but was more compassionate and insecure because he was a dwarf and had been mistreated because of that. And even Tywin knew deep down Tyrion was the most like him. Without the bias Tywin would have raised him to be exactly like him.
He also loved his wife more than anyone. Tyrion's birth caused her death (no fault of his own ofc). She already was fragile for months after Jaime and Cersi's birth, so she passed away after giving birth to Tyrion. I think besides Tyrion being a dwarf, the most similar to Tywin, and being the only one able to pass on the Lannister name since Jaime is a White Cloak and could take no wife, combined into Tywin having unreasonable scorn for Tyrion. Mostly his wife's death.
In the books the best part about this scene is that Tywin paces to the window afterward. Tyrion can tell that this interaction, Tywin seeing Joffrey's uncontrollably petulant and immature nature, had actually shaken Tywin. I like to think it was at this point Tywin realized Joffrey was beyond saving and would be a terrible ruler.
And if he grew up to his majority and was allowed to rule by himself, he’d be another Maegor or Aegon II or Aerys II. A real life example could be found in King Edward II of England.
@@gfilmer7150, let’s leave Aegon II out of this. He had little control over the dance of dragons situation. The seeds for that had been planted since near the end of Jaehaerys’s reign
And all that is why Tywin did not shed a tear for Joffery's death and quickly took Tommen under his personal tutelage. If the young king had not been assassinated at the purple wedding, Tywin might have ordered the hit himself.
you can really tell that Tyrion inherited the intimidating and threatening side of Tywin... he's the only one who could shut Joffrey down like that apart from Tywin with just a few words
You are not wrong at all. in fact Tywin's sister pointed that out in the books "Jaime, sweetling, I have known you since you were a babe at Joanna's breast. You smile like Gerion and fight like Tyg and there's some of Kevan in you, else you would not wear that cloak... but Tyrion is Tywin's son, not you. I said so once to your father's face, and he would not speak to me for half a year."
I dont get why Tywin hated Tyrion so much. I mean I know the reasons, but he's so good at stuff and if he would have gave him more responsibilities he'd been killing it
@@slicingonions4398 In the book tywin blame him for the death of his wife, and have suspicion that tyrion is not his son but his wife has been raped by mad king because tyrion hair color is all weird (Golden hair, Brown eyebrow, etc). Tywin didn't even blink. He demands respect without words. They know what Tywin is capable of. He is a killer. Everyone knows that except the idiot King Joffrey.
It's the irony of their relationship. Tywin resents Tyrion for killing his wife and being a dwarf, but while he treats Jamie as his favourite son and heir, it's really Tyrion who is most like Tywin in thought and intellect. Tyrion is the best heir Tywin ever had.
Cersei and Tywin are the secrets to Tyrion's power. Spending his entire life with a sister who wanted him dead and a father who was indifferent dulled his fear of death.
I love Joffrey's facial expressions in this scene. This confused look of "he didn't really say that, right? I Am the KING!!" Is just perfect and suits his character very well in my opinion.
In Joffreys little mind nobody has the right to say anything like that to him, then 2 people give him a verbal smack down in mere minutes of one another, one of which being someone you didn't even realise you were actually scared of.
Jack gleason deserves so much more love and respect for his performance. He is seriously the most underrated actor in the show. He goes from joy, to anger, to fear, to frustration and then embarrassment. Bravo!!!!
There were more impressive performances in the cast, but Jackie Gleeson did a phenomenol job yes! Dont forget Charles Dance as Tywin Lannister, who literally OWNED every scene he was in! Written scripts are one thing, but embodying a character like he did, is just top-class acting! Or the 2nd-most hated character in the show; Walder Frey, played by David Bradley. Another veteran actor, rather unknown, yet he brought life to the despicable Walder Frey in a fantastic manner. Alfie Allen as Theon Greyjoy was great as well! Iwan Rheon as frikkin Ramsey? Michael Mcelhatton as Roose Bolton was an eerie, cold character too...(imho given too little screentime! McElhatton áced the part!) Lena Headey whas phenomenal as Cersei! Pedro Pascal, as the flamboyant Prince Oberyn was also pérfectly cast, and spectaculairly performed! and even that their roles were small(scrapped mostly?) Alexander Siddig as Doran Martel, and Indira Varma as Ellaria Sand were amazing too! Stephen Dillaine as Stannis was sólid! Mark Addy as Robert Baratheon!! He had a great chemistry with Sean Bean's Ned Stark, and afterwards, the showrunners regretted to not stretch out that story a bit as they were just a sight to behold! Ciaran Hinds as Mance Rayder? James Cosmo as Lord Commander Mormont? Owen Teale as Ser Alliser Thorne? Bella Ramsey as Leana Mormont! She was amazing too! Kristopher Huvju as Tormund Giantsbane was great as well! Ben Crompton as Dolorous Edd? Iain Glenn as Jorah Mormont(who also tutored Emilia Clarke during the show!) Gwendoline Christie as Brienne of Tarth! Peter Dinklage as Tyrion Lannister Niklas Coster-Waldau as Jaime Lannister But one of thé biggest surprises in this show was the rather unknown Rory McCann who ábsolutely ACED it as Sandor 'the Hound' Clegane! Why McCann never got an Award for his magnificent performance, is beyond me...
Tyrion owned him so hard he didn't even know how to react or what to say for a good 15 seconds.....but tywin was the one whole hit the own age nail on the head....just with that look he gave him when he said that....and on a side note....when an actor can basically intimidate the AUDIENCE and make every say oh shit just by giving a look, saying Charles dance was astounding wouldn't do him service
I think the first time, I was like, "Oh Shit, he did not say that to Tywin." Now though, I actually find it funny. Nonetheless, you are right. Charles Dance is so damn good at acting.
This is such a great scene, Jeoffey finds out he stepped over the line at 2:08. His facial expression reveals he can't bully Tywin. Tywin's stare shows he's the boss.
Robert was the best king ever he knew he sucked at ruling so he found someone who could and he was great at getting people to follow him those are the qualities of a true king on the other hand you have dany who is an active ruler thinks she is good at it but is actually causing nothing but chaos
@@PR--un4ub Not a great king, but a strong one no doubt. He commanded respect from all and held the realm together when at its most fragile. When Barristan sees Hizdahr bending to Yunkai's demands he immediately thinks of Robert and how he'd have never reacted so meekly to threats.
"Any man who must say I am the king is no true king". Something about the line, the delivery, it makes it probably one of my favorite likes in the entire show. Tywin just sounds intimidating just saying that.
Imagine being in charge of something, yet so insecure and child-like that you must announce to the world you're the boss. Everyone who hears it knows it's being said out of fear and a need to intimidate. Which sucks the life out of the statement, and turns everyone against you.
@@kaleemjay7464 Yeah, so many people here saying Tywin owned Joffrey, but I think Joffrey one-upped him in this one moment. He rightfully pointed out that for all of Tywin's posturing, he hid out on Casterly Rock during Robert's Rebellion and left Robert to do the heavy lifting, only aiding when he was sure Robert and Ned would win. You can tell how much of a nerve this strikes in Tywin, and him sending Joffrey to bed reeks of him trying to assert his superiority again.
I agree it would be wholesome, except Joffrey was only using this knowledge to make himself look better. Given Joffrey’s character, basically I seriously doubt he was sticking up for Robert. More like, taking Robert’s accomplishments as his own I’m guessing. But, yeah I think you’re right that Joffrey for once in his life actually successfully burned someone…that someone just happened to be one of the most dangerous people at the time in the entire kingdom-the only one who still had some control over him and was literally leading Joffrey’s military. I definitely think Tywin was strongly considering killing Joffrey.
This is such an interesting scene. It appears that Joffrey really did love Robert Baratheon. At the very least he was one of the few people he respected.
He's always made that clear, Robert was the one that taught him how to be an asshole, Cersei was the one that taught him how to be the spoil brat, the scopath part was due to the power of the crown.
For all of Joffrey's faults, he loved Robert and he really wanted Robert to acknowledge him. He was trying to be the kind of ruler he thought would make Robert proud. Now granted, he did not do a good job of that. At all.
@@somestrangecircus5505 that is very true, he had a very masculine of how to rule... dont listen to women and their wails, the commoners will make do, and should bow before absolute power... I very much liked your statement
Yes, one of show Joffrey's few sympathetic moments was when he was with Robert at his deathbed and he was genuinely sad at the loss of the man he considered to be his father.
In this scene, you mess with one Lannister, you have to deal with all Lannisters, but why oh why did he had to try tywin? Everyone including his stupid mother knew at this moment....HE F***ED UP, and had to scurry him to safety before tywin shows him who's the real monster. He does fear . That's why he was indirect about it. He is no fool. No matter how brave you are . As a king Joffeey, can kill him whenever he wants. So his threats are indirect.

What’s great about this scene is that Joffrey is correct. Tywin stayed on the rock waiting to see which side was most likely to prevail and decided when he learned of Roberts victory at the trident
I wouldn't call it hiding, rather a tactical decision that would put his family in the best possible position, which secured Cersei's children their royal status. Tywin is almost solely responsible for Joffery being in the position he's in. Instead of going down the rabbit hole, Tywin knows there's no point and just sends the kid to bed instead lol
Even Jaime said to Brianne that Tywin don't pick the losing side. Joffrey was right, Robert won the real war. War in his own definition where you fight in the battlefield and win through sheer strength. Joffrey respects Robert and no one else.
Thats called beeing smart tactician. Why wasting your forces, equipment and resources, when you can save them for later and in one sweep take all? Or rule from shaddows, liky Tywin does!
I love how if Tyrion says something, Cersei would protect Joffrey. But as soon as he answers back to Tywin, its game over for this bitch, he on his own.
It really shows how threatening Tywin is when all the man has to do is stare and say "Any man who has to say he is the King is no true king." So much said in so few words, and delivered beautifully by Charles Dance. IMHO, the white walkers and Daenerys do NOT compare to how amazing the politics of King's Landing were.
Interesting that Joffrey saying “My father won the real war!” can refer to both his fake parentage in Robert Baratheon, as well as his real father Jaime Lannister, as with the former killing Rhaegar and the later killing the Mad King they both have a claim to have won the war of robert’s rebellion. Without intending so, Joffrey still told the truth no matter the angle you look at it. Such good writing in the early seasons.
I think Tywin realizes that Joffrey is totally out of touch with reality. Joffrey has not been groomed for leadership, which under normal circumstances, the next person in the line of succession ought to be - extensively. I can only conclude that GRRM is suggesting that Tywin has been planning to rule the kingdoms through his puppet grandchildren for quite some time, or it might just be a coincidence brought on by King Robert's untimely death. GRRM is such a genius.
I mean, Robert himself would have been a puppet if not for Jon Arryn and Ned Stark being his Hands. An inept ruler, if there ever was one. Somehow, despite being a purebred Lannister Joffrey inherited none of their cunning or industriousness.
@@sudharmansitaraman8377 robert wasnt as inept as he seemed. like tywin said, a good king knows what he knows and what he doesnt. instead of trying to administer a kingdom he clearly had no business running, he chose capable men for the big branches of administration he knew he couldnt possibly handle himself. under roberts reign there was peace and prosperity for the most part with the only major problem being his absolute dumpsterfire of a son.
1:58 Tywin: You fucking little shit! Cersei: I cannot save you from this! Tyrion: Now THIS is going to be interesting Pycelle: Oh dear! Varys: Every man for himself! Joffrey: I'm the king! I can say whatever the fuck I want.

“Any man who must say ‘I am the king’ is no true king. I’ll make sure you understand that when I’ve won your war for you.” And this is why Tywin Lannister is such a great character. Incredibly complicated and - at times - despicable as he was, he had those moments where I couldn’t help but respect him. He and Tyrion were the only ones who actually stood up to Joffrey.
The funniest part about Joffrey was how because he was the king whenever he did something cruel everyone around him would play it down or make excuses for him so that the King was never at fault or he hadn't really done anything wrong. Like when Joffrey poured wine on Tyrions head and everyone played it off as an accident but Joffreh kept doubling down like he wanted people to know that he was trying to be cruel.
Just rewatched this scene and I'm absolutely LOVING everyone against Joffrey. Tyrion with the treats, Cersei with the agonizing thought of having such a difficult child, Varys being cautious and sly as always, Pycelle trying to get on the kings good side as usual despite knowing he's insolent, while Tywin for the first time backs up his son and goes against the delusional King Joffrey. What a brilliant scene.
Also note how Pycelle tries to get on Joffreys good side when Tyrion 'insults' him, but stayed completly quiet when the insult came from Tywin. He even looked mostly at Tywin after Joffrey answered. Pycelle may want to get on Joffreys good side (or just get back at Tyrion), but he knows damn well who really has the pants on in this kingdom.
The very reason they are both high in my list of favourite characters. They are both thoughtful, clever, extremely intelligent, have cool voices and epic death glares.
I don't think he reacted, mean based on his earlier statement about monsters and warning Joffrey that messing with them is bad he just gave the expression of, "told you so..." With monotone dead pan look to Tywin as if saying, "hello monster."
Ioved Varys his expressions at everyone, keeping in his laugh after Tyrions treat, the look of "even a king doesn't have to spit in my face" when Joffrey starts renting and the look of "oh shit" after he insulted Tywin.
For once, even Joffrey knew he'd messed up. You can see that look of dawning uncertaimty and fear on his face as Tywin stares him down after that little outburst.
This is one of the only scenes I can think of where Tywin and Tyrion's contempt and resentment for Joffrey was so fierce that Tywin backs up Tyrion and they both smile and laugh briefly together in harmony as Joffrey is put to bed...... In that moment, for just a little while, Tyrion and Tywin are united and bonded by their hatred of the same person. Joffrey was so bad he could mend a broken family to unite against him.

The seeds for that had been planted since near the end of Jaehaerys’s reign

you can really tell that Tyrion inherited the intimidating and threatening side of Tywin... he's the only one who could shut Joffrey down like that apart from Tywin with just a few words
You are not wrong at all. in fact Tywin's sister pointed that out in the books
"Jaime, sweetling, I have known you since you were a babe at Joanna's breast.

Watching this back years later, I get the sense that Tywin was actually somehow proud of the way Tyrion talked down to Joffrey.
It's the irony of their relationship. Tywin resents Tyrion for killing his wife and being a dwarf, but while he treats Jamie as his favourite son and heir, it's really Tyrion who is most like Tywin in thought and intellect. Tyrion is the best heir Tywin ever had.

I love how NOBODY opens their mouth when Tywin schools Joffrey.
McElhatton áced the part!)
Lena Headey whas phenomenal as Cersei!
Pedro Pascal, as the flamboyant Prince Oberyn was also pérfectly cast, and spectaculairly performed!
and even that their roles were small(scrapped mostly?)
Alexander Siddig as Doran Martel,
and Indira Varma as Ellaria Sand were amazing too!
Iain Glenn as Jorah Mormont(who also tutored Emilia Clarke during the show!)
Gwendoline Christie as Brienne of Tarth!
Peter Dinklage as Tyrion Lannister
Niklas Coster-Waldau as Jaime Lannister
But one of thé biggest surprises in this show was the rather unknown Rory McCann who ábsolutely ACED it as Sandor 'the Hound' Clegane! Why McCann never got an Award for his magnificent performance, is beyond me...
"She is no longer yours to torment". The anger in Tyrion's eyes and voice is great. Excellent acting from Dinklage
I like it how everyone was nervous when Tyrion threatened Joffrey, but everyone was TERRIFIED when Joffrey insulted Tywin.
Even Cersei knew that Joffrey crossed a line with that insult to Tywin.
Lord Vary’s reactions throughout the whole scene is gold
Tyrion owned him so hard he didn't even know how to react or what to say for a good 15 seconds.....but tywin was the one whole hit the own age nail on the head....just with that look he gave him when he said that....and on a side note....when an actor can basically intimidate the AUDIENCE and make every say oh shit just by giving a look, saying Charles dance was astounding wouldn't do him service
I think the first time, I was like, "Oh Shit, he did not say that to Tywin." Now though, I actually find it funny. Nonetheless, you are right. Charles Dance is so damn good at acting.
0:51 "EVERYONE is mine to torment..." Sums up Joffrey and his view of the world quite succinctly.
This is such a great scene, Jeoffey finds out he stepped over the line at 2:08. His facial expression reveals he can't bully Tywin. Tywin's stare shows he's the boss.

It's lowkey wholesome that Joffrey stood up for Robert Baratheon. One of the few times he shows a certain amount of humanity toward anyone.
Rs he lowkey read his grandfather like a book
He didn't do it for any other reason than to clap back. Joffery used people in his game that was all.

All Joffrey wanted was to make Robert proud

The acting in this show is out of this world. They are all SO good. The tension, the looks. Amazeballs
The look of pride on tywin's face and coming to Tyrion's defence. Excellence, and a teachable moment for everyone present.
He's right but that doesn't mean Tywin is any less powerful.
Even Jaime said to Brianne that Tywin don't pick the losing side. Joffrey was right, Robert won the real war. War in his own definition where you fight in the battlefield and win through sheer strength. Joffrey respects Robert and no one else.
That’s tactical Decision you idiot!
Thats called beeing smart tactician. Why wasting your forces, equipment and resources, when you can save them for later and in one sweep take all? Or rule from shaddows, liky Tywin does!
when joffrey talks about his father it took me several moments to realize that he still thinks Robert was his father - i immediately thought of Jaime
Even Cercei was like “Oh shit. Let’s get out of here.”
The fiercest look i’ve ever seen when Tyrion say “No, she is no longer yours to torment”. Love it.

Damn I miss Tywin. That death stare he was giving Joffrey and the awkward silence afterwards 😂
