That’s a great mod, Plug & play. Thank for sharing. The learning of the remote it does work but it’s very stubborn, you have to try many times or sometimes works with the first try.
There is a learn button on the garage door opener on the ceiling that you need to “set” for the home link to work
That brand does work, took me about three attempts

Not sure why I would need a compass in my mirror, but the garage door opener would be useful and the E39 mirrors with GDO are ~10x more expensive than the E60 mirrors!

in the UK the Rover 75 car uses a bmw e46 auto dimming mirror so these are a straight swap if you can find one.

Pre 2018 HomeLink transmitters will not work with newer garage door openers. You can get a HomeLink Compatibility Bridge (look that up on UA-cam and Amazon) for $40 and this will allow older HomeLink cars or remotes to work with newer openers. Did this on my e39 540 touring.

You need to buy an adapter for your garage opener that has the older version of homelink protocol and that will fix it. That's what I had to do.
There is a program set button on garage opener motor . google the procedure for your opener motor and when garage motor starts blinking run back to the car and press the button on your mirror.

This is like buying a new remote opener, you will need to pair it with the opener motor. I believe !!

So for my e90 all I need the mirror I don’t need a new harness or anything I’ve seen other videos you have to move a wire to another harness
I have tried 2 separate mirrors on my 325i 04- none of them power up I don’t know why

Yes it should work with any vehicle that already had the auto-dimming function! Good luck 👍
My 2000 528i has a module mounted directly in front of the mirror mounting bracket on the windshield. It is encased in the plastic review mirror bracket cover. What does this do? It complicated the mirror switch as it is right next to the mounting bracket. I was able to do the switch without removing the mystery module however.
These mirrors are currently selling on Ebay for 20 bucks

Love your video! So before I set off on this treasure hunt... will the Homelink buttons on the mirror work on my 2004 E46? I know the car is prewired in the over head (did not come with the HomeLink panel there) but is the mirror bundle also pre-wired for HL? I fear not but you never know about these things until you ask the experts! I would love to have both the compass and the HL in the mirror instead of having to do both mods (adding HL panel to overhead). I have the SOS feature in my current mirror and that seems quite worthless at this point and the mirror glass has died so the mirror replacement needs to be done regardless. Thanks!!!!

I have a 2004 330xi and want to upgrade the mirror. It's an auto dim but mine has an SOS button. I read somewhere that it could be an issue? Is there a specific newer compass auto dim mirror I should look for?

You can find them in 5 series, 3 series, or X5! Just check the bottom for the little hole where the calibration button is, and you'll know you have the right one. These only work on cars that already have the "auto-dimming" feature in my experience. Good luck!
Did you end up getting homelink to work? I'm having exact same issue on my e38
Maybe it's the homelink version? One version had rolling codes that wouldn't be compatible with the other version.
Possible, I'm going to do some more research and I'll update in the description when I get it working!
@@TheBimmerBarn I'll be following because I really don't want to buy the transmitter that goes overhead near the sunroof switch. I've retrofitted all my vehicles with homelink mirrors and it looks much cleaner.

Bro i bought both versions of the homelink compass mirrors, but after installing them, they both dont work. meaning the compass dont turn on and the homelink light doesnt turn on when pressed. i check the fuses, but still no go! 2005 330xi.
Hmm, that's weird! I could try my compass mirror on my e46 and see if it works, don't see why not? Will update you when I get the chance
I updated my RV mirror to the one with the compass. I plugged it in but it doesn’t turn on. I have a bmw 325i 2006
I think it only works with cars that came equipped with auto dimming RV from factory. Is yours?

Hi I have BMW X3 E83 and what color cables is for the compass?
The compass just uses power and ground from the harness on your car, if it was equipped with the Electrochromic feature. There are no separate color cables or wires for the compass feature, hope that answers your question!
When you got the mirror with homelink (without compass) did you had to do put any wiring into the pins or it was everything plug n play (like the compass one in the video) ?
It's plug and play if you have a vehicle that already came equipped with auto dimming mirror.

Does the new mirror work with the light, or the Light-Rain sensor on the e39? And did you connect it to the pre wired home link connection, or are the cables already there by default
The auto-dim works I just tested it, and I have to do a little more digging with regards to the homelink.
@@TheBimmerBarn I had the same issue on a 2008 Toyota Sienna. After using a 4th garage door remote (Genie one) I got the car's opener to blink rapidly. It turns out all other remotes sent a short signal, not continuos like the Genie does. Try a different remote.

I think all e46 m3's came with auto dimming mirrors, so it should work great!
