Sorry, but Greig should NOT expect to be cross-checked in the head by a hothead in Morgan Rielly. And here's the thing. It was a slapshot into an empty net. That doesn't break any code. It's just baloney that's completely made up. It was a way of signifying the fact that the Senators had completed a great season for themselves specifically for asserting bragging rights over the Leafs. There's nothing wrong with that. But Rielly couldn't handle that, and stupidly overreacted. Perhaps if he gave Greig a talking to or a little push, that'd be more accepted. But what he did was completely over the line.

Sens fan here - this is the right way to view this all. Rielly should have roughed him up and at most, drop the gloves. Greig knew exactly what he was doing but disrespecting a team by not abiding to an "unwritten code" does not warrant taking a cross check to the head.
Rielly took the bait and Greig got the last laugh. Plus he'll still challenge Rielly to a real fight when they play next year.

Exactly. So asinine that players can't slap a puck into an empty net. It's not like it's hurting anyone, other than the empty net. It's disrespectful to the empty net for sure, but I don't think it knows how to feel.

    • @mattypark5725

I think it’s because in most cases EN’s are scored from a distance, just like a clear attempt, but with the purpose of putting it on net. Other times they’re scored by actually taking the puck up into the offensive zone to legitimize the chance of scoring on the play, but none of those show this sort of “fuck you” way of capitalizing on it.
Personally, I would care less if I were on the Leafs in this moment, but it’s understandable on why it does warrant that response.
Greig could have just did a weak wrister, or slid it in, but when someone goes out of their way to slap it like they’re taking a clap bomb from the blue line; then I think they’re doing it intentionally to send a message

Team Rielly or Team common sense, What side you on? It's not seen as "soft" to have sportsmanship. They're supposed to be professional athletes. I fully support clapping pucks into empty nets (it's the NHL's equivalent to a victory dance). Only insecure or immature players would take that as a sign of disrespect. The point of the game is to get pucks across the goal line (at what velocity they cross is irrelevant). Hope he gets 6 games, other players take notes & everyone in the league starts slapping pucks in on empty netters.

    1. There is no rule for how you score an EN goal. If he wants to slap it from a few feet out, let him. Nothing unsportsmanlike about it, even wit a 5.1 left on the clock. Now if time expired, or it was offside, that I get.
    2. I appreciate Morgan's response, but yeah, going for the head ain't it.

Also taking the action out of the picture the player in question has 225 penalty minutes in 769 nhl games played and has never been suspended. Those goals represent a way for a high skill player to score a goal in an unexpected fashion. If Zegras for example just attempts a regular wraparound or a pass to the slot, the chances of that being successful are less than the Michigan, (for him) in that particular type of situation.
With this ENG, scoring was not in doubt.

Thank god someone finally said this. Was the response too much? Yep. Was SOME TYPE of response warranted? Yep. People pretending that the slapper was nothing are fucking deluding themselves, but at the same time, that crosscheck wasn't the move. He should've dropped the gloves and scrapped the kid to send that message.
It truly blows me away that some people hate the Leafs so much that they can pretend that slap shot wasn't classless and full of disrespect. Even if its just a dumb rookie getting too excited, thats still the message it sends. I don't think Reilly meant to actually tee off on his head there, he doesn't have 2 hands on his stick when it makes contact and it rides up his shoulder... but still, you're responsible for your own play. He should get some games for sure. I think with his record and the context of the situation 4 would be reasonable, but sounds like it might be 6 or 7.... who knows really?

Disrespect? Disrespect is hitting a guy from the blind side in the head. The slap shot is actually nonsense. Rielly can take care of that after the game just commenting that he was surprised he actually hit the net, and he can practice his shot more while the Leafs are in the playoffs. You counter annoying pest stuff by being annoying. Now he is looking at at least 6 games AND next season a fight with Brady Tkachuk.

I still am so bewildered as to why anyone cares about a slap shot into an empty net. "DOING SOMETHING LIKE THAT, HE KNOWS HES GONNA GET A RESPONSE" bro, he did literally nothing wrong. Some people make it sound like its somehow a massive diss to Toronto. But What difference does it make? Are we out here just worried that the netting will have be replaced, and Rielly is just out here standing up for the equipment manager? I feel like if he did nothing in response to the goal, NOBODY would care about it. I don't think anyone would say "Oh the leafs let him slap it into the empty net, they're such softies." because how mentally cooked do we have to be to think shooting a puck into an empty net is some sort of capital offense?
So to me, its insane that the take I'm seeing is "Greig shouldn't have done that, but Rielly went too far" instead of "why tf did Rielly assault a guy for literally doing nothing wrong?". I feel like this is like a much stupider version of baseballs "Oh, your pimping your homerun by staring at it for slightly too long. Greig had it coming, but "it" was not a cross check to the head. Even if had dropped his gloves, started punching Greig, and Greig just turtled (it sure looked like he would have), the game was over, and he would have gotten 5+2+game, and maybe a 1 game suspension for last five minutes (maybe not though since Greig earned it).
