I'm no hockey expert, but I'm sure there's no rule saying a player is not allowed to slap a puck into an empty net. Of all the possible choices, a cross-check to the head is one of the worst decisions. that should be a 10-game suspension and the only thing they should be frustrated about is losing to a 28th place team.

Besides, it was an Ottawa home game so nothing wrong with the slapper into the empty net to emphasize a win in front of the locals (and a season-series sweep actually) against your provincial rival. That play by Grieg deserved a response but would rather have seen it cleaner than a crosscheck to the head. He should get 5 games for that. I'm saying this as a Leafs fan.
Having played 5 years of Junior and years of Senior after, I don't understand how a Slapshot into an empy net is objectionable. What "message" was Ridley sending??? Can someone who played the game explain it to me? How is it any different from a backhand, snapshot or push? If the heartless Leafs showed half the passion during the game as the did after, maybe the outcome would have been different.
I've played the game all my life, true, on amateur level, but yeah, a player is entitled to score an empty-netter whichever way they choose, even a Michigan. If you don't like it, don't give them the puck in the O-zone (Willie?). You lost, you allowed more goals, deal with it. But in the locker room. Not through cross-checking a guy in the head when the play is dead.
It can be interpreted as showy and unnecessary. I guess it's kind of like if someone did a spin-o-rama before scoring an ENG or an overly dramatic celebration after. But I see it as more of a release of emotion rather than showboating/taunting. Clearly Rielly had some emotions he needed to release too. The league should give him a few weeks off to decompress.
EXACTLY! As a player myself I fail to see how a slapper into an empty net is a problem. You have to be a real special kind of triggered snowflake pussy to let that bother you. Leafs used to me 2nd fav team, now I hope that they tank the season.
Deserves a response, that is B S, he scored on an empty net. Keefe was once again out coached, he has yet to figure out how to get the Leafs to play team defense. The Leafs will continue to go home early because they don't realize playing defense is a job for everyone in all three zones.
Ultimate scumbag move by the coach.... This is 99% of the issue with headhunting in the NHL when coaches put their goons out and encourage unnecessary violence like this. Usually from no talent players. But no talent coaches that think violence will solve their teams inadequacies should be getting fined whenever a player under their coaching goes too far like this. Trickles down from the top every time.
X-check to the head is crossing the line of your made up sports term. Drop the gloves. That is how it is handled. Or there is also the option of laughing it off and taking your loss like a man.
No, 99% of the league would not argue an attempt to injure headshot is a necessary response for a slapper into an empty net. I say this as someone who grew up watching the Leafs and it’s the most disappointing things I’ve seen from our team since I saw Tucker headshot Sergei Gonchar live. Especially disappointing since it’s so uncharacteristic of Reilly, the play has Keefe’s fingerprints all over it and I can’t wait till he’s gone.
Keefe is the reason the Leafs are so unilaterally hated in the league. Has nothing to do with how bad their record is, or how long it's been since they won a Cup. It has EVERYTHING to do with a coach going "yep, perfectly ok to slam your stick into a dude's face, nothing wrong about that". I always try to root for the underdogs, but after that hit, if Reilly doesn't sit for several games, the NHLPS is going to be even more of a joke. Anyone who has played real hockey agrees this is what you expected to happen and it is what should have happened. That’s Canadian hockey, if you don’t like it then educate yourself on the history of hockey and how it was created.
This was FAFO. That said, the suspension will have to be atleast 10 games, and when Rielly comes back he'll have to answer the bell against Ottawa. The Thrasher has spoken.
So this is exactly why hockey doesn't get watched as much as it could. The media's reaction is that the cross check to the head was okay. Families chose to watch less violent sports, period. There is far to much BS that happens after goals, if you make a clean hit on the wrong guy you have to fight a GOON. There was nothing wrong with the slap in the net, its two neighbours in a rivalry game, nothing wrong with putting a little extra on the shot. The problem is everyone thinking there needs to be a response. People do not watch hockey because of all the BS get back, vengeance shit that happens every game. Its the same in a 5 point basketball game with 35 seconds left, buddy gets a steal and goes down and makes a huge dunk, the difference is no one fight or gets cross checked in the head. Hockey culture has a disease, this video proves it. The vast majority thinks its ok to retaliate, to many of you think its ok to head hunt because he slapped the puck. Even the creator of this video thinks that. That is why people do not watch hockey, why hockey is slowly dying in Canada (we did great at the JRs. this year) why hockey players are looked at with contempt. 100% gutless by Ridly Greig. Should have gotten a 1 game suspension minimum for unsportsmanlike conduct. Reilly let him off easy. Making Reilly sit for 6 was a massive overreaction.
I was cheering for the leafs this year. I want a Canadian team to get a cup. But, as a ref, I can’t cheer for a team whose fan base thinks it’s okay to respond to an action that isn’t against the rules with a dangerous rule breaking hit. Imagine if in the MLB a batter got fed up with his pitches and turned around and took a hard swing into the side of the catcher’s head. It would be a suspension for a season at least and probably assault charges. The fact this play won’t even get mentioned in a couple days goes to show you how violent the NHL is.
If the NHL cared about player safety, they would start handing out double-digit games for any non-hockey player that results in an injury or was done with clear malicious intent. All a weak suspension does is tell plays “unwritten rules can be enforced”. There’s no such thing as “unwritten rules”. That’s the logic of the coward.
I agree with the suspension part of your comment, but the rest is just an abysmal take. What made the act wrong was not the unwritten rule aspect. Frankly, you going there shows a complete and utter lack of understanding of incident, what made it actually wrong, and hockey itself. Teams have respect and pride, and should defend that respect and pride. What made this wrong is not that there was some consequence or retaliation. What made it wrong was that the retaliation was way over the top and was inappropriate, illegal, and injurious. A fight, hard check, or something along those lines is the appropriate response. Take away the enforcement of unwritten rules and you get a sport with all the fire and passion of this year's Sharks. Nobody wants this boring mess.
"Take away the enforcement of unwritten rules and you get a sport with all the fire and passion of this year's Sharks" This makes no sense at all lmao. The game has more skill and speed than it ever has, but the lack of contact has made it boring.

This culture needs to change, he just scored a goal to seal it, Y'all need to get over yourselves and ask for a safer, cleaner, more responsible game.
Rielly and Keefe are both clowns
There both gods you softy
takes one to know one
no crying in the breastmilk
@@Nightstriker0404 are you 4yrs old, what is next? 'I know you are, but what am I?'
@@michaelkaster5058 I know you are but what am I
As a die hard Sens fan, this was hilariously and I'm a big fan of Grieg. With that said, if he did that to my team I would ONLY be angry if he did it in MY barn. Doing it in your own arena is fine. Screw Rielly for hitting him the face. Play between the whistles or drop your gloves.
For the next game, we need to ask Leafs to make an list on which goals that are OK and not, so we will have no more injuries.
So where are all the other videos of all the other cross checks that have actually been aimed at the face unlike Rielly’s… if you had eyes and were watching, he cross checks his shoulder and it slides up… I agree the gloves shoulda been dropped, but to say he went for the head is absurd
So it's definitely apparent that with having a coach with no morals you can expect the team and fan base not to have any. What a trashy organization!
They are losers from the top down
AGREED 100% The way the sens player took a dive and curled into the fetal position was egregious! There is no place for that in hockey!
Well we all know what kind of team he’s cultivating after that comment. These guys are going to become the team that hits dirty because their coach celebrates that choice to do that. Won’t be long before shit goes pear shaped.
I hope they tumble the rest of the season. Just don’t tumble as far as the Wild, as I’m hoping they can get a good draft spot.
buddy you coach minor bantam houseleague nobody cares
Has the 60 past year showed you anything? Even since the start of the season the best Canadian team has been by far the Canucks. Just never have hope for toronto and you wont ever be dissapointed.
Ever team has a guy who's taken a cheap shot at someone, nobody cares about a fair weathered fans opinion
@@wildwilie I’d like to see the Canucks or Oilers take it. Even at the detriment to my favorite two teams, the Wild and Penguins.
@@dylanm9981 I don’t coach any league. I’ve reffed everything up to NCAA though. And if you don’t care, why’d you respond?
This is the first correct take I’ve seen on this. I’m appalled at all the people justifying this. If you want to fight somebody drop your gloves, call them out. Don’t jump somebody from behind.
I really want Jacque Martin to troll the media and have the players practice the proper way to score an empty net goal.
There is no proper way to put the puck in the net ,just get the puck in the net ,bunch of pansies ,what’s this world coming to .the slap shot goal was a bit overdone , but Reilly’s cross check to the head was over the top dangerous and completely classless ,multi game suspension coming .comments by the leaf coach on this incident leave into serious question about his own mental stability and sense of judgement
Far from gutless. Guess u don’t appreciate old time hockey. Ottawa’s Captain even said it was wrong to score an empty net goal like that. Guess u missed that point.
Not trying to be “that guy”but to be “that guy” you called Max Domi Ti domi his father
They've been saying there's an unwritten rule. T00 many unwritten rules in hockey, especially in Canada
I’ve played a lot of hockey over the decades, and I still don’t recall an unwritten rule that if somebody scores on an empty net, and they slap the puck in too hard, you get to try to paralyze them.
Tie Domi scoring at 54 years old is ridiculous. The guy is just built different.
Freak of nature!
If you're going to get your feelings hurt over and empty netter, maybe don't pull your EFFing goalie
That should warrent 5 games easy
Classless DIVE!
Nice response Sheldon, let's see how you like it when someone knocks the teeth out of one of your players for something absolutely trivial. What a joke
Trivial but yet Josh Norris said they be just as pissed if that would have happened to them?
Like one of Matthews' totally needless over-the-top "look at meeeeeeee" goal celebrations!!! If someone cross-checks him to the head for it, their coach can just shrug and say "our team has a right to respond".
And that makes it excusable? He probably won't even get a fine for the crosscheck, let alone a suspension, nhl discipline is a joke. They literally encourage this shit by not holding players accountable @@btgkg9639
Good job Mo! Everyone knows the leafs are wimps. Glad to see you have it in you. #44 the real Captain. If I see him out on the street, I'm gonna ask for a hug.
Ya...and you know hockey there hunny ;)
Zadorov got two games for his hit on Raymond yesterday. Was at the game, and watched the replay. Seems about right. Rielly's hit is far worse, and IMHO far worse than Perron's hit that he got 6 games for in December. If the league cares about player safety and is consistent, (I know - they are not) then Rielly should get at least 10. What is the under/over on Fan Dual???
Right on Reilly
Not gonna be sad when the leafs fall again.
Keefe's a goof coach
Torts got fined $25,000 for this one.

Vs Keefe sanctioning as "appropriate" dangerous and suspension worthy conduct. (With calculated and prepared statement)
What will Keefe get fined?
What should his punishment be?
They should make his fine and punishment taking you out for dinner (vegan crap is expensive)

"Take away the enforcement of unwritten rules and you get a sport with all the fire and passion of this year's Sharks"
This makes no sense at all lmao. The passion doesn't come from stupid unwritten rules, it comes from wanting to win. Respect and pride also have nothing to do with unwritten rules. There's nothing "respectful" about being a little bltch when you get scored on in an "unacceptable way".@@samhutchison9582
Toronto should be banned from the NHL, please do us all a favor and dissolve this team.
I just lost any respect for Keefe that I every had.
lol you respected keefe?
the cross check to the face was the right play. and im not a leafs fan.
