- In a game that saw 8 goals with plenty of entertainment, it was the final 5 seconds that will be remembered from this Battle of Ontario matchup! As the Toronto Maple Leafs came into the Ottawa Senators barn, the stage was set for a great Hockey Night in Canada..and it was. From Auston Matthews getting the scoring going with his 42nd, Shane Pinto having himself a great night with a goal two assists, Sheldon Keefe mocking Tim Stutzle for diving and of course Morgan Rielly responding to Ridly Greig's empty net goal with a brutal cross check to the head in a play that has no place in the NHL. I cover it all in todays NHL hockey video!

Went to a game last night, so I'm late on this one but how many games does Rielly get? In person hearing scheduled, so I'd imagine it's 5+
Rielly is an all-star and a lady byng candidate. Greig is a skid on a trash team and was super greasy with that empty netter. Lastly, Larry Tanenbaum is deep with NHL brass. Calls will be made. Rielly will get 1 game, 2 games max.

why even drop the gloves ?? Scoring a goal is not something that has to warrant getting attacked in any manner. Dale Hunter did that tears ago, the most despicable thing in hockey history. Hit a guy after he scores a goal !!
@@johnmorrison9758 Can't disagree with you there. I would rather that they get rid of fighting, which is long overdue, and allow hitting. When you watch an older game, there are a lot of hits and guys just keep going. I agree that the speed of the game probably requires a renewed look at the rules, especially regarding "vulnerable hits" but an obligatory "fight" (mostly grabbing/wrestling anyway) after a hit is a modern invention.
But... I would still choose a fight over a crosscheck to the head.

@@JB-1184This childish “tough guy” posturing is what has made the game soft - yes, they have left in the fights which are hardly even fights - guys with face shields basically wrestling. At the same time they have basically removed hitting. Very few fights in the NFL but that is a MUCH tougher game of contact. The game has more skill and speed than it ever has, but the lack of contact has made it boring. This is why the playoffs are so good - basically no fighting but everyone on a team not named the Maple Leafs is expected to take the body on every play. But if you prefer the regular season games for the fights, that’s up to you. I watch the UFC when I want to see a real fight.

I'm a die hard Habs fan. When Gally elbowed that player recently I was so pissed at him. He got suspended and he really deserved it for his utter stupidity!!! But laffs fans are quite a different breed apart. We all know that for sure.

a lot of people are delusional and forget that hockey players on the big screen are real people, but I've also personally put opponents in hospital on "clean" plays at the time. In the moment you're trying to take momentum and or remove a good player from their ice time, and boy does your team appreciate it. It's like scoring a goal x10, literally everyone on your team is giving you endless props for the next 3-48 hours. That said, I've never tried to hurt someone after the game was over... And in retrospect, it's not cool to hurt someone who was just trying to play a game that a lot of us love (but it's weird because a lot of them were trying to do the same thing to us).
No what's really sad is how many people still don't know fk around and find out. Kids are too soft and let off the hook these days. Generation or over purelled and under pu ished babies thinking they can do whatever they want without consequence. Cross check to the face, yes too much but be prepared to fk around and find out always.
The cross check to the head is just retaliation for a bush league play. It’s a tough game and way worse things have happened when trying to show up the opposition. If Greig had done that against the Bruins or Panthers that’s a pier six brawl and the kid gets the crap kicked out of him. Doing that against the Leafs who are the softest team in the league doesn’t take much courage or smarts. Bush league play for the few Senators fans at the game.

Having played 5 years of Junior and years of Senior after, I don't understand how a Slapshot into an empy net is objectionable. What "message" was Ridley sending??? Can someone who played the game explain it to me? How is it any different from a backhand, snapshot or push? If the heartless Leafs showed half the passion during the game as the did after, maybe the outcome would have been different.

I've played the game all my life, true, on amateur level, but yeah, a player is entitled to score an empty-netter whichever way they choose, even a Michigan. If you don't like it, don't give them the puck in the O-zone (Willie?). You lost, you allowed more goals, deal with it. But in the locker room. Not through cross-checking a guy in the head when the play is dead.
It can be interpreted as showy and unnecessary. I guess it's kind of like if someone did a spin-o-rama before scoring an ENG or an overly dramatic celebration after. But I see it as more of a release of emotion rather than showboating/taunting.
Clearly Rielly had some emotions he needed to release too. The league should give him a few weeks off to decompress.

Attempt to injure is a disproportionate level of disrespect to a goal celebration. That Keefe thinks it’s appropriate is just another in the long list of reasons he shouldn’t be coaching the Leafs.

Remember every person who ever won or who has been nominated for a Lady Byng is still a professional hockey player and to simply play in the NHL usually means there is a screw or two loose in the brain of almost every player whose played and they’re all capable and willing at times to do crazy stuff like what Morgan Reilly did after that empty netter by Ottawa.

Since you probably cannot math either, I'll break it down for you. The contract is worth $60mil on paper. Cool. What's that after taxes? About $28mil? Now his agent gets around 10%. That's about $3mil. So now he's down to $25mil, or thereabouts, on the valuation of his contract.
He's giving up about 2% of the value of his contract because...a 21yo kid did something 21you kids do. So he tried to smash his head into the glass with a crosscheck. He INTENDED to Injure him. He's lucky Grieg wasn't injured, specifically concussed. What Rielly did has no place in any sport, even ones that allow for fisticuffs.

No, 99% of the league would not argue an attempt to injure headshot is a necessary response for a slapper into an empty net. I say this as someone who grew up watching the Leafs and it’s the most disappointing things I’ve seen from our team since I saw Tucker headshot Sergei Gonchar live. Especially disappointing since it’s so uncharacteristic of Reilly, the play has Keefe’s fingerprints all over it and I can’t wait till he’s gone.
Keefe is the reason the Leafs are so unilaterally hated in the league. Has nothing to do with how bad their record is, or how long it's been since they won a Cup. It has EVERYTHING to do with a coach going "yep, perfectly ok to slam your stick into a dude's face, nothing wrong about that".
I always try to root for the underdogs, but after that hit, if Reilly doesn't sit for several games, the NHLPS is going to be even more of a joke. Especially with their recent "We put the safety of our players above all else blah blah blah" soundbite that was released a couple days ago, due to the rather alarming spat of dirty hits (ie: Marchand, Gallagher, etc)

If David Perron got suspended for a cross check to the head in a much more appropriate moment of the game (still not okay) then Rielly should be too since both instances are very similar.
So since that would be the right call and there is no consistency from player safety, no suspension because the NHL is a joke in this sort of thing.
Reilly’s also getting an in-person hearing like Perron’s which means in all likelihood 6 games or more.

Technically the book says at all times, but anybody watching (and the refs) can see clear as day whose fault this was. It's rarely called that way, I didn't say never. NHL reffing is inconsistent af, and the rule book does not have a specific mention of this exact scenario, but objectively Pinto did nothing wrong. He's less at fault here than a follow through high stick, which is not a penalty.

How many games should have Makar gotten for his hit on McCann last year? Brutal late hit a few seconds after the whistle resulting in significant injury to Seattles top player? Or Pietrangelo 2 handed slashing Draisaitls wrist as he scored an EN goal?
It’s all about consistently in the NHL, and the DoPS has none of it. If you want to give a comparable suspension length to the Scheifele hit on Evans ok fine, but let’s not pretend Evans was both a lot more vulnerable and it was a much more brutal and unprovoked hit than Riellys on Grieg.

So, it can't be dropping the gloves because there is a rule and an automatic 1 game suspension for that. Reilly just needs to keep his stick low when confronting. He didn't so he's getting games off.

As a canucks fan, Zadorov suspension is appropriate IMO. Rielly is getting at least 6 games, it's an in person hearing.

Zadorov got two games for his hit on Raymond yesterday. Was at the game, and watched the replay. Seems about right. Rielly's hit is far worse, and IMHO far worse than Perron's hit that he got 6 games for in December. If the league cares about player safety and is consistent, (I know - they are not) then Rielly should get at least 10. What is the under/over on Fan Dual???

I was cheering for the leafs this year. I want a Canadian team to get a cup. But, as a ref, I can’t cheer for a team whose fan base thinks it’s okay to respond to an action that isn’t against the rules with a dangerous rule breaking hit. I hope they tumble the rest of the season. Just don’t tumble as far as the Wild, as I’m hoping they can get a good draft spot.

I’ve played a lot of hockey over the decades, and I still don’t recall an unwritten rule that if somebody scores on an empty net, and they slap the puck in too hard, you get to try to paralyze them.
I was angry about this at my Dad. It made me memorize the iconic "YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH!!!!" outburst from A Few Good Men that I wish Don Cherry was on HNIC that Saturday night and memorize that like recreating that scene with Ron. He would've memorized Jessup's rants and Ron would've memorized Danny's "I think I'm entitled".

If you want to see how you handle these situations, see the Bellville Senators vs. Grand Rapids Flying Toasters a few weeks back! Grand Rapids over celebrates, Sens look for fights at the end of the game, and the GR players have no problem dropping the gloves.
It has become my favorite senator's goal since bobby ryans ot winner against pittsburgh in game one.
