In this video, we break down the biggest news of the NHL off-season & how the Tampa Bay Lightning seemingly 'disrespected' their long time captain Steven Stamkos. Let's take a deeper look as to how this affects both teams on & off the ice...while potentially changing the way NHL teams construct their roster in the future.

@briantampa1164 Losing Stamkos is a massive blow. It's close to the Ryan Smyth leaving the Oilers feeling. And that hurt me as a fan of Smyth and what he meant to Edmonton. Stamkos deserved better than this

you would be the exact same person that would bellyache if JBB kept stamkos "no matter what" and tampa got worse as a result.
it's funny seeing outsiders and casual tampa fans saying "KeEp StAmKoS No MaTtEr WhaT" lol. the romantic storybook ending would be great in if it entailed having stamkos stay with tampa, in a way that would allow him to continue his career at a fair labor cost, and in a way that allows TBL to ice a competitive team. the reality is with their salary cap situation, and all the years of deep p-off runs, lack of draft capital, and poor prospect pipeline, it wasn't possible.
and even with his skill level at current age of 34, having scored 40 goals, steven is NOT going to be worth $8m in a few years when he declines. factor in his powerplay points from last season and his goal scoring has dropped significantly 5 on 5 the last 3 seasons. 19 of his 40G came from the pp this past season, where he benefits a lot from kucherov and hedman. TBL needed to improve with even strength play and stamkos is on the decline at this point of his career in that regard.
you can't rely on power plays to go far in the p-off's, as there are less PP's that become available. while steven won't be easy to replace, TBL needed to get younger and more versatile players to fill his void.
tampa was also dogshit on defence. hence JBB in going to extend hedman july 1st, is the correct business decision. bringing back mcdonagh was ok too. tampa was going to have to find a d-man, so they already knew what they are getting with ryan. even with his high price tag, he still played well for NSH in 2024, and he's on the books for only another 3 years. mcD and tampa never wanted to split up in the 1st place - he was a salary dump back in 2022.
tampa is very comfortable in how they handle their business, and they don't want to repeat the situations that mid-2010's DET went thru, and PIT of today is going thru.

@@randombutrelevant valid points. i def know that JBB was set on what he wanted to do. steven def wanted to stay. however if you watched the JBB press conference on july 1, he mentioned that steven had a "financial expectation" of what he wanted to get paid. so it was def more than $4-$5m/AAV.
keep in mind he's already made over $100m in salary b4 the NSH deal, so stamkos isn't going to end up at the soup kitchen anytime soon.
i'm glad that steven got one last big payday. i'm also glad that tampa dodged a bullet because steven's contract is going to age like room temperature milk in 2 years time, maybe even less.

    • @carparthero
      @carparthero 6 місяців тому +10

when steven retires, he will get his number raised, and a statue built outside amalie arena.
for the time being, the lightning still have at least 3 first ballot HOFers on the team - so the p-off window is still (slightly) open. JBB would have been wrong to hold onto stamkos until he's 40 just because he's the "captain".
TBL are not going to be like the pittsburgh penguins where it doesn't matter how long you extend them because in a few years they're gonna tank anyway. or like ken holland, when he was in detroit giving loyalty contracts to guys like justin abdelkader.
as a tampa fan i'm happy for steven getting one last big paycheck. i'm also glad the team dodged a bullet if that was the price (NSH - $8m AAV x 4y) that was required to keep steven under contract, because stamkos' contract is not going to age well by year 3 or even year 2.
steven is a declining 5v5 winger whose specialty is the PP.

His defensive play with Hagel and Cirelli is especially of note, since those two are an absolute nightmare to play against while they're on the PK. Tampa was already one of the older teams in the league, not to mention they had an abysmal defensive end. Adding Guentzel in exchange for Stamkos, while it may hurt, could end up being just what the Bolts and Preds both need to elevate their teams to the next level. Now he's going to make 32 million over 4, and possibly even sign something after that to add a little bit more to that tally. They disrespected the man after everything he's done for them. Stamkos scored 40 goals and 40 assists playing on a line exclusively with a guy who put up 144 inflated his stats big time. I get he's a future hall of famer, but in reality this has been Kuch, Hedman, and Vasys team the last 5 years. They won a cup basically without him, and he has never produced in the playoffs in the same way that he has in the regular season. They're replacing him with a guy who's 5 years younger, who has always been better in the playoffs than the regular season. I don't like the disrespect, but i mean he has made 100 mil, and they offered him to get a nice pay check into his 40s. Good for him to get his money but there's no way that contract looks good years 3 and 4, and I'd be shocked is he sniffs 80 points again with the dowgrade in linemates he'll have in Nashville.

Life long Lightning fan here. I love Stamkos just as much as other fans, but one thing we lacked the past 2 years has been the ability to defend and keep Vasy from taking so many shots. This is where McDonagh comes in. When we got rid of McDonagh, it became apparent that Ryan was like a second goalie on the ice. He blocked shots and cleared pucks better than anyone. He may not have the offense that Sergy had, but he’s a much better defensive defenseman. This leads me to Stamkos. When a turnover happens and comes back the other way, Stamkos was almost always behind in the play, and when he did get back in the defensive zone, he wasn’t as effective at defending the set up plays. Jake Guentzel has similar offense 5 on 5, but also reacts better to the defensive play. Jake is not a replacement in leadership and off ice capabilities, but he provides a top line, two way forward similar to that of Barkov, and we saw how effective Barkov was in the playoffs.
Vasy is still one of the best goalies in the league, but his numbers have gone down for multiple reasons, but on ice, he needs a better team defense in front of him when 5v5, which is where Vasy struggled the most this year, especially when plays broke down offensively and came back the other way. When Stamkos is on the ice, you bet other teams are running their 1st or 2nd lines, which can be equally as talented. If you can’t play a 2-way game, it leads to goals against. Stamkos has shown that weakness, and not just this past season.

They needed to change things up. Stamkos regressed 5 on 5 and was only really useful when on the powerplay. Even then, that powerplay runs through Nikita Kucherov and would likely have the same success without Stamkos. Guentzel is a much better player 5 on 5 which is what Tampa needs and the main reason he didn’t record many powerplay points was being stuck on the pens for most of the season who had a terrible powerplay. Guentzel could realistically score around 95 to maybe even 100 points with Kucherov and Point while being better defensively than Stamkos. Tampa also now has a playoff caliber defense with McDonough and Moser. Dumba was god awful and we didn’t even truly have Sergachev after he got injured in December. He only played half a regular season game and 2 playoff games in 2024. Vasi is now healthy too. I’m not gonna call them a cup contender until I actually see them play, but on paper this team should easily make the playoffs and have a realistic chance of going far as other eastern teams like Florida and Carolina lost key pieces.

As much as I love Stamkos, you have got to be out of your mind if you watched the Lightning last season and said he was the best player on the team. Kucherov is out here catching strays from his own fans.

I agree i dont see them making the playoffs. Moser is decent but sergachev was no doubt better for the team now

Players are never bigger than their teams.
NHL is by far the best hockey league, and at the top level teams outside of champion window obviously look for continuity, so if you can't adapt what the team needs, go to another team or retire. When you were at the top, it doesn't mean you should be at the top until you retire.

I am a huge stammer fan, (not a lightning fan at all) and I hope the preds win the cup next year while the lightning take a spot as a bottom feeder. Same to VGK

Yeah except for all the reports that there was tampering and that he already picked out a house in Nashville before the Lightning even gave him an offer. I love stem coast and I'm sure he'll be back to retire in Tampa in 4 years, but can't win a Stanley Cup when your team relies on the power play to score. Defense wins championships in every sport and Stamkos was at a -18. $24 mil was not an insult at all, but $32 mil for your last good years is pretty enticing.

An then there is the Leafs with their run it back mentality.

Personally, I don't think it's as much about the fact that they didn't resign him as it about how they went about parting ways. The contract they offered was pretty insulting, but when you're MVP of sixteen years, the last ten of those with him in the captaincy, and you choose to not resign him AND maintain radio silence about all of this...that's a bit much. The fact that there was no video tribute, no tearful farewell from the Bolts, not even just a passing mention of how monumentally important he was to the team and it's coherency, not even mentioning how crucial he was to their last three cup runs? That to me speaks of not just poor player management, but also of an ignorant approach to public relations and the image they are presenting to the public and all of their future players.
Granted, maybe I'm too emotionally invested in this and I'm making mountains out of molehills, but my gut tells me that I'm not too far off from the truth.

How is offering a ageing player 24 million dollars insulting

@@allannixon5113 I would say it's the fact that they tried to offer him a longer term but not a pay that's fair to the captain of the team. In my opinion, I would have said something like 4 or 6 years at 5 would have been fair, still less than he was making before they let him go into free agency but at least it wouldn't have been so low that it would have come across as lowballing.
Again, all of this is just my opinion, and I agree that it was still a lot of money they offered to him, but I just don't think their offer was equal to the work and performance he had given them.

I wish the lightning could have worked something out with him. But have to look at the facts. He became a liability on the ice from a defensive standpoint. Take a look at the numbers when he was on the ice in five on five situations. His plus minus did not warrant a big contract unfortunately. I was brokenhearted as any Tampa fan at him not being there anymore. I will be still be rooting for him except when the preds play the lightning
