    Hi everyone I am new to your channel, like it's just been 24 hours. I am Janet who resides in Yorkshire in the South of the county. I was born in West Yorkshire, the home of "TETLEY" the brewery giant magnates, where, the great and beautiful Shire Horses worked as Dray Horses pulling those great big wagons of ale to the Inns and bars around Leeds and beyond! (Sorry, I am not more knowledgeable on the subject!" However, I adore Horses of all shapes and sizes but the mighty "Shire," holds a very dear place in my heart. Until I found your channel, I wasn't even aware that such shows like this existed, so thank you for sharing! These "yearling colts" are adorable, how on earth can the judges can choose between them, god only knows. The greys are spectacular but then my attention is always grabbed by the black ones too. That's what attracted me to your horse Appollo, in the beginning, by the way you and your team have done such sterling, hard work to bring him back to life, to nurture and give 100% tender loving care. I was enthralled with his story and journey to date! I shall certainly continue to watch your channel avidly, you have just found yourself a new fan! Warmest regards and love!

    Used to show dogs. Only had to worry about them biting a judge not trampling them. I give these handlers a lot of credit for being able to manage with that much horsepower. Such beautiful babies. Would love to see how they look a year from now. I expect it's standard for showing but it's too bad their tails aren't left long. Thanks for sharing your trip.

    Fun fact. Also, to this day Shire horses are resident at Hampton Court Palace. In the Royal Court. One is named Ed and the other Harry. Were seen in Platinum Jubilee as the drum horses. Shire horses have the rank of Major above any other Royal animal. Ed, is now 5 year's old and HM the Queen will be renaming him later this year. He was one along with the other Shire - named Harry. They carry the solid silver drums. In the Platinum Jubilee and trouping of the colour.

      Because Celt, the previous passed away. Not sure if Celt was pure Shire. But, I think Ed is a pure breed aka an ordinal Shire. I am probably wrong. However, Her Majesty EIIR is the patron of The Shire Society.

    Lovely! I'm coveting the smaller of the two greys. :) I do wish they wouldn't do whatever it is they do with their tails, though. It looks as though they're trying to mimic the look of docked tails, which, UGH. Not an aesthetic that does the horses any favours and not one that should be propagated.
    And it's interesting that they all seem to be shod even though they're only yearlings. Is that usual for this breed?

    • @apollotheshire
      @apollotheshire  2 роки тому +7

      These are draft horses, for they most part they are bred to pull. Wagons & plows have a lot of harnessing behind the horse, as in near its butt & tail. They dock or shave because they don’t want ropes and reins and leathers to get tangled in the tail, ripping hair out, spooking the horse creating a very dangerous situation or worse tearing the entire tail off. It’s functional. It’s a breed designed for a job, so it’s advantageous that they are able to perform that job to the best of their ability, comfortably. Without risking injury to the horse or the driver. I like a long tail but there is a reason for short, shaved or docked tails.

    • @candydandy2694
      @candydandy2694 2 роки тому +3

      they can't dock them, it's illegal in England, so although they do look a bit yuk, especially the shaved tails, it's only aesthetic.

    Yearlings can be a pain! Like any toddler their minds are anywhere BUT where they need to be. And to judge they like you said at an awkward stage of growth it can be hard to judge them against the standard for their breed! However, it is extremely rewarding when you see the lightbulb go on in their head and things start to make sense to them!

      @@audreymuzingo933 Yes, I think that is right. They have a lot of filling in to do with that big bone structure. I have found over the years that they don't mature until about 6 years or so.

    • @audreymuzingo933
      @audreymuzingo933 2 роки тому +4

      @@fionamcgregor4268 Yep, supposedly it's 5 years for Labs. Mind you, with them it isn't just their bodies but also their behavior maturation. Like you will essentially have a PUPPY for 5 years in terms of potty training, chewing up objects, taking off down the street every chance it gets, jumping up on people, etc. But if you can handle all that and aren't a complete moron in terms of general husbandry and how you interact with them, you will wind up with the best pet that exists, the epitome of all the good things dogs can be, calm, loyal, smart as a whip, and still pretty puppy-like fun at the appropriate times.
      Now I wonder how many draft horses there were back in the day with swayed backs and other skeletal deformities. If the whole reason to own them was for work, it's hard to picture a poor farmer waiting so long and investing so much grain (even with the coldblood metabolism "discount," ha) and have nothing to show for it for literally YEARS. I mean just looking at the colts in this video; they look like babies but already as large as some saddle breeds, so one might think they could at least serve for riding, when really they should have no burden on their growing spines whatsoever.
