I just found your channel. Watching Apallo's glow up is really something special. I'm so glad you found him. He really needed you and your family. The build up of trust over time is clear.
I found your channel last night and fell under the trance of Apollo's beauty inside and out, and before I knew it I had stayed up for hours watching your channel and loved every moment. I also loved watching you paint, you are such a talented artist and your daughter certainly has inherited your gift too. You have a beautiful chemistry with Apollo and from the 1st video I watched, when you purchased him sight unseen and you saw the photo of his condition, I knew then that the universe bought you 2 together and he is indeed your soul horse. Sending big hugs for Apollo from Australia🦎, Kat🐬, Kai🐨 & Hunter🦘
Oh man, you can tell he really likes his new shoes! Reminds me of taking my kids to get new sneakers. They just HAD to wear them out of the store, then ran and jumped all the way to the car. LOL!! Apollo is obviously delighted. A happy boy!
Nothing feels better than a pedicure and new shoes! Apollo feels like a brand new boy and lighter on his feet. Always fascinating watching your farrier work on Apollo...what a back breaking job he has, but so appreciated. I bet he has some interesting stories. Thanks for another great video, Santiago, and letting us spend some time with your beautiful Apollo.
Absolutely!! He’s actually having some serious back problems and has to have some other farriers help him today. Such a hard physical job! Thanks for watching! Greetings from me and Apollo 🙂
Apollo is authorized a beautiful big boy. I am sure he must know he was blessed the day you took him home. His life has changed so very much. All for the better.
I always enjoy Apollo. His recovery is an important part of his story. I recently found a similar horse, Oliver, that is in similar condition that Apollo was in when he was adopted. Oliver is at the UA-cam channel Homestead Horsemanship. Oliver is a 2 year old stud colt that ended up in the horse trader muck which ultimately lead Oliver to being abused/neglected. So. Oliver now needs recovery just like Apollo did when he was 2. I suggest checking out Oliver to offer a little love and support as he now works on becoming the amazing stallion he is meant to be.
Apollo is as calm (almost bored) like my Clydesdale when his farrier comes to visit. He's as happy when it's all over too. Great job on the custom shoes! 😊
Wow!! That was intense!! I caught myself holding my breath at times!! I can only imagine what the cost would be to have all 4 hoofs being done!!! Apollo was a perfect gentleman thru the whole process 🥰 Thank you for the video !! See you next time! Kathy
I really enjoy watching Apollo get the pampering and care he deserves. He is a wonderful boy, and he has really come so far from when you got him. I just love him🥰
Love Apollo’s spa days, he’s so handsome. Best horse dad 🌹 Santiago, this video is absolutely fascinating. It goes beyond mere shoe replacement, his technique is very precise. Can we have a recorded Q&A (Top10?s) w Apollo’s Farrier one day (what was required to be the Team Head Farrier)? 🌹
I’m glad to hear that what you get goes for Apollo. From the videos that I’ve watched, you care very much for Apollo. That’s great to see. He’s a very beautiful boy. God speed to you both.
Great video. I know what the frog is, but what is the white matter called that the farrier scrapes out? I do know what it smells like when shoeing a horse. Btw, Travis is the cleanest, neatest, most handsome farrier I've ever seen😃 Love Apollo, he's majestic!😍🐎♥️
Beautiful Apollo is so much calmer now than in his first shoeing repair video a few years back! I can't believe the difference! His demeanor was so uncomfortable and wasn't happy to stand for the farrier
It's obvious Travis has been doing this a long time. I can just see myself forgetting how hot the shoe is and grabbing it without a tool. ;) Love the square nails and expert job. 2 questions. 1) Why wasn't Apollo's leg hair secured so the farrier could see more easily? 2) What becomes of the old shoes? I have a pair of very old snow cleat shoes from my Grandmother's work horses. It's wonderful to see how happy Apollo is, running and jumping. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for the questions- I’m not sure why he didn’t secure his hair this time. Sometimes he does but it doesn’t seem to matter to him even if it’s in the way. The old shoes are melted down and used again. About every other visit he will switch out the shoes. 👞 I appreciate you watching and commenting!
I bet the smell from the hoof being singed, it quite intense. Burning hair is very strong, so I can imagine what this is like. Very fastinating to watch this process. Apollo just gets more gorgeous each time. Thank you for sharing.
A good farrier is a task master to behold. They take a straight stick of metal and turn it into custom, orthopedically correct, footwear. Pretty amazing.
I recall you once mentioned that the soles of Apollo's feet were very thin and required specialized padding. Has that problem resolved itself? That off side hind looks healthy and strong.
Great camera work and liked it without music. Have two questions, why 3 nails on one side and 4 on the other ? Watched the farrier who tried to fix the bad shoeing job that Apollo had and he put like saran wrap around his feathers to keep them out of the way. How come not this time ?
You want to put as few nails as possible so it’s about just enough but not too many. Not sure why he didn’t wrap his feather this time. Great observation! Thanks for watching. Greetings from me and Apollo🙂
I've seen several other videos of farriers before this. One thing that I notice that other farrier do is that they tie the hair back so that it does not get in the way as they work.
Love me some big drafties. I used to want to retire to breed Shire & Clydesdale mammoth mules, but health got in the way. Still, I'll always have a special place for the big boys & girls.
Wow that is such a long interval, in Australia the standard shoeing interval is 5-8 weeks (with most being 5-6 weeks, and 4 weeks for remedial shoeing).
😮 How much of the hoof could he dig out before it became a problem? Do they normally wear gloves? and do you ever trim the feathers back a bit or just let it all flow? 😊
The farrier MUST make sure the shoe provides equal distribution of weight. And the rasp is CRITICAL for him to "even out" the base of the hoof as well as ridding it of loose or compromised "cuticle." That's why a good fitting is essential... because it leads directly into the next time you shoe the horse.
Minimum 10 weeks between re-shoeing? Huh, that is a long time. Do his hooves grow that slowly? My boy hardly made it to 8 weeks (he was a bit on the very heavy side of an Andalusian, most likely somewhere drafter got mixed in). Luckily, I always had a good ferrier for the first two years. When I moved in with my husband, I found a master of his craft. He was also a hoof orthepedic and slowly we got rid of his horseshoes (he had a rip in his right front hoof and thusly had to wear shoes on his front feet until the gap grew out). After that was grown out, he said my horse had basically good horn quality and his legs were straight enough to try barefoot. We never went back, despite intensive dressage lessons.
Apollos hoof could be twice as big as your Andalusian so perhaps that is why we can go longer. It feels all too often on the pocketbook 🤑 I would love if he could go barefoot and we have tried but… perhaps the 2000lbs doesn’t lend itself to not having shoes on. He was almost immediately sore. Thanks for watching! Greetings from me and Apollo 🙂
I always loved to watch the farrier when my horses were shod. They really beat those shoes to death and I never could see the difference after they were through, lol. But that is why I didn't did it myself.
Just a suggestion, your Ferrier should take a men's large tube sock cut the toe out and slip it on to the hoof and pull it up to pull the hair out of the way .
How fast does the horse's hoof grow? And I guess a horse that were in the wild would naturally wear down the hooves at a natural rate, but what is it that make shoes necessary? Is it riding in itself or does it depend on what surface the horse walks on?
I'm always amazed that there are people that ask the same inane questions over and over and my favorite is, "does it hurt the horse?" If it hurt the horse do you think any Farrier in his right mind would work on a 2,000 pound animal that could and would kick him to death and beyond? You might want to put a disclaimer in front of your video that clipping your hair, toenail and fingernails doesn't hurt either and neither does pounding nails into the same substance as what our hair and fingernails are made of. My gosh, has no one any common sense anymore? The same goes for cows toes/claws, same material. Apollo is a fabulously gorgeous animal. Great genetics
Apollo has lovely feet and is very well looked after. Wouldn't it be easier to tie or wrap his feathers up just to keep them out of the way. Thank you for not using music. Not everyone has the same taste in music, and what your personal choice in it may definitely not be a good fit for the people you would like to join your channel and would make it hard for them to stay until the end as it would for me. All that said, you have one beautiful, amazing horse and have always been my favourite breed, then the Friesian.

those shoes are just so perfect... his feet look so good. Must be a huge difference for Apollo. One very happy horse.

Horseshoes only last 10 weeks?
How old is Apollo? Young, middle age, senior and do you plan to breed him so that he can have a line of Apollo's after him?
He was gelded before he came here. He's maybe eight by now.
