As a second generation Irish American, this film has always had legendary status in my 58 years on earth.
My grandparents left Sligo in 1917 and headed for Brooklyn like so many other Irish expats back then. I think I’m the only one of my huge family that hasn’t been back to visit Ireland.
To see White o morn in such a state is heartbreaking. I hope that the necessary steps are taken to protect what’s left.
I’m hoping to go visit there myself before my time is up.🙏🏻🍀🇺🇸🇮🇪❤️

It was bought by an American years ago who let it fall apart and refused to sell it to any interested party.

It would be a huge undertaking to put up a sign telling people not to take relics and stones from the site. We understand of course because this is Ireland...

"Take pictures only!" would do about right for most people."$50,000 fine" might do better for the more culturally challenged folks.

Despite repeated requests Galway County Council has taken no action to enforce the protected structure status of ‘The Quiet Man’ cottage - a heritage designation the Council itself unanimously voted on and put in place more than two years ago!
Under the heritage designation, the owner is legally required to maintain the current ruin and take action to, at least, stop it getting any worse.
The Council has the authority to officially request that he does so - but they won't even take that simple first step.

"dilapidated state of the cottage...", there's an understatement. The rocks, however, are in fine shape.

So then, why would the owners have ever let the cottage go to ruin? It was always a special place after it became famous in the movie. I don't understand it.

      It almost hurts the heart.

Because many owners do not have attachment to it as people who loved the movie do. Also, it goes to ruin because too many people as narrator want to take a piece of it home. As a retired professional archaeologist, I have fought many a battle with hikers, tourist and bottle hunters trying to protect historic ghost towns where I live in California. Everytime I did lectures before these groups and urged them not take souvenirs from the sites, not only because it damaged them, but because it was against the law, I would get the same blank stares and question, HOW DOES MY TAKING ONE PIECE OF THE WINDOW FRAME, OR THESE BOTTLES HURT THE SITE. Now you can see why.

Here's what happens so often (and that's why I say we have to fight for this "easy" way of life for most and those that died for us to have it) is that back in the day, outside of archaeological people and the like, people liked movies but also had a full life "making history" and had a lot on their plate with hard work and so forth. Today, all you hear are people saying I can't wait to vacation or they do woodwork and making models or some other hobby instead of helping the family and not worrying about going on vacation. Outside of a few people, very few people traveled outside of a 100 miles back in the day and if they did they traveled in a car in their country. What I'm saying in a long winded fashion (lol) is that we not only have so much free time (and we can't let that get away because the people before us worked hard and fought so we could) but also we want to be a part of a time that was (outside of medical advances) usually better and that is the truth.
    God Bless!
P.S. I love the movie, but unfortunately there are others, especially in other countries that never saw the movie and could care less and that's where an association has to be made and put constant pressure to keep things the way they were for all to see.

This video is 6 years old I see. All the suits turned up for their few minutes on camera, then went home happy. Now with protected status... Nobody is allowed to touch this ruin or restore any part of it without planning permission from Galway CoCo. So job done. They all go home happy. Compulsory purchase order should have been enacted decades ago on the owner. One wonders if there is an elephant in the room re right of way. There is a modern home built quiet close to the ruin. There is a politician and former Gov minister minister living in the area and insofar as I know he is also inert. We are a nation of vandals
