This is excellent and more shotokan schools should have this kind of approach. Oss!!

I’m a Go Jyu guy and also have these same principles of moving from traditional basics which can be very robotic as well to more free flowing functional. Love what you’re doing and keep up the great work and videos Sensei!

No heresy at all. JKA, especially Naka sensei, teaches the same. Keep up the good work. Osu

Excellent video. I am Matsubyashi Shorin-ryu practitioner. Our practice is very pragmatic and self-defense focused, Much of Japan mainland based modern Budo has become sport oriented...very unfortunate. When will people realize that you are watering down an art when you make it a sport? You loose the essence and people are not learning effective self defense. Nice to see a Shotokan practioner focus on reality based training.

Yes, that myth, that sport karate and SD are the same thing won't go away. They are two different skill sets.

Great - the idea of functionality in kihon. Your opinion about tradition reminds me of the 2 you tube vids of Abernathy. (sorry, my English is errrrr....) 😅

Any time someone compares me with Iain is a sign I must be doing something right! Thanks.

Great video. Especially like the final section on Age Uke/Gyaku Zuki.

Hi, I like the video, and i have a question if you could share your thoughts. In our school we really focus on the functionality of kihon as well.. What caught my attention is the oi tsuki, which you say you do before you actually finish the step. Does this not diminish the grounding and the strength of your punch? I transitioned to Kempo from taekwondo (I am a black belt in both) and found that I needed to change some of my TKD kicking techniques specifically because of lack of being grounded and being able to transfer more of the power in the kick. Thank you for your thoughts.

First of all, there are always a million variable when considering bio mechanics/ It's never black and white. Here is how I look at it. When your foot plants, your upper body tends to want to lean forward. In Shotokan, the way we are "supposed" do an oizuki is to finish with square hips and an erect posture to hold "good form". If, as your foot lands, you allowed your upper body to naturally lean forward then the 'breaking' effect of your front foot may contribute to impact because your shoulders are still moving forward. Of course, there is a tendency to have ALL your weight on your front foot and be off balance which is no good. In my video, I mention that the front foot slows your forward momentum. This is what I have had most success with on the heavy bag. Hope this helps.

@@AppliedShotokan Thank you very much for your reply, I was interested in your logic behind this execution and can understand your approach. Like you said, there are a lot of factors to consider. Thanks again

Tip: put the camera up at eye level instead of talking down at it and get a wireless lavalier mic system. A good one for 195 CAD: www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B07T95R1JT/ref=ox_sc_saved_title_7?smid=AU14N51PPEZY0&psc=1
