  • People experience anxiety in different ways. Your idea of how anxiety appears might not always align with how it presents itself. You may not notice traces of anxiety in someone who grapples with it internally and in private. To end the misconception and stigma, we made this video to raise awareness.
It is important to remember to always be kind, as you may never fully realize what others are struggling with when they are alone. If you are dealing with anxiety, know that you are not alone in facing these challenges.

Totally relate to all of them. My anxiety has led to depression. And has left me totally alone. I have no friends and even avoid family. I can't stop thinking about all my past mistakes. And yes people around me think I am just lazy and don't want to do anything. It hurts so much! And you see no way out or end to the isolation and dread.

Hi Terri. I could have typed your message myself. You aren't alone out there, feeling this way. I have lost almost all contact with friends and family too. Even my cats stay away from me most of the time. Interaction with people for 8 hours a day at work, doing what l now know is "surface acting", leaves me destroyed at the end of the day. I come home, microwave something, then drink a bottle of wine and stare at the wall, instead of cleaning my dirty house.
Then, l have a panic attack when my alarm goes off the next morning, and so on.
I am so sorry to hear what you are going through. I bet you are a really beautiful person that is a lot of fun to be with, but this disorder has taken that truth away from you, like it has from me. Just remember that you are awesome. And it is ok to be awesome all by yourself! Or at least with people like us who "get" you! I bet you are full of great qualities like a sense of humor no one gets, are really smart and emotional, and have a smile that lights up a room. 🐱
I don't see a way out for myself and have lost myself in depression too. I am probably a lot older than you and it is too late for me to find "happiness", whatever that is, but l bet you can. I hope so. I may just be a voice in the wilderness but l am pulling for you, Terri. We can do this.

It feels like a curse at times. Not being able to do something because of anxiety and then feeling left out or annoyed at yourself for not doing it. Plus overthinking makes you really tired but keeps you awake because you can't calm the thoughts. It's an uphill struggle every day but at least there are healthy ways to tackle it 😊

Hey there, you are right, there are healthy ways to tackle it! If you're dealing with anxiousness, I want you to know that hypnotherapy can really help. It works by accessing your subconscious mind to address the negative thoughts and beliefs that contribute to anxious feelings.
As a hypnotherapist, I help clients with hypnotherapy as an effective and natural treatment option that can give you back a sense of control and confidence.
So if you're struggling with anxiousness, consider giving hypnotherapy a try. It might just be the breakthrough you've been looking for.

Yep, same. When I was in highschool the people I used to hang out with, people that I thought that were my friends, they would constantly go out together and not invite me (most likely bc they already knew that I would refuse it) buuuuut they could have invite me anyways. I already know I'm an outcast but they would put me even more as an outcast.. It was sad. Another thing with me is that I don't really know how to express feelings or to feel empathy towards people, I don't really know how to react or how to "talk" cuz it gives me an extreme amount of anxiety so people think I'm rude.. Which it's not the case but people don't understand it at all and it's so annoying sometimes.. But oh well.
Nowadays I'm friendless and honestly I'm not mad about it, it's better than having to deal with people that don't even understand you at all.

I can relate to all of these. And one thing that wasn't mentioned is when I force myself to go out and interact with other people, when it's over and I go home I will pick apart every single second of the interactions I had until I convince myself that I looked like a total loser and sounded stupid, and whoever I had the interaction with thinks the same about me. Even total strangers! It could just be an interaction with the cashier at the store which seemed pleasant at the time that sets me off. It's all very stressful and makes the anxiety worse. Does anyone else experience this?

I recall once having to go to a social event and my jacket got snagged, nothing big but I remember getting upset and the evening hadn’t even started. My mom, bless her soul, said to me, “Many will see it but no one will notice”. Did you read through the other comments here? Everyone has their own insecurities and anxieties to deal with. Don’t let life pass you by. And if you do encounter any negative or judgmental people, ignore them, or better still, block them like you would a call or text. Look for people who think positive, are kind and genuine and collect them as if they are treasures you found. They will help elevate your soul. YOLO, so don’t be afraid to go out there and claim your life. 💖🌺☺️

I suggest that you are made for much greater things than this world can offer. This life, in this bodily form, is merely preparation for what is to come. It is in this life that we may first touch the divine.

Not trying to sound like an asshole but try changing your mindset to "it's not about me. You're here to serve others in this life." Whether you want to agree with that notion is up to you, but the intended effect is to help people, not only for distraction and sense of personal worth and well-being, but to shift your values and get yourself out of your head. You know how much time we have wasted overthinking shit?? Try volunteering at some local organization. You'd be surprised how attached people get to when they see people want to donate their time and effort.
Something else to keep you thinking: We likely all have an ideal person we want to be, right? If so, be the change you want to see. Nobody, and I mean NOBODY, is going to do that for us. We have to figure that shit out. Let's get there!

Hey there!

I have been diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder and it's always surprising to me what I don't remember in the aftermath of an anxiety attack. Sometimes I'll even forget how to say words, respond in a face to face conversation in a timely manner, or process what someone has just said to me. It's really interesting but also really difficult if people don't understand that I'm anxious. I find myself lying and saying "I'm tired" a lot so I don't have to explain myself

For a better life sit on a chair, neck straight, eyes closed and observe the sensations of your incoming--outgoing breath at the entrance of the nostrils for 5-10-15 minutes or more. Don’t fight your thoughts. With daily practice the mind will relax. No deep breathing needed. Do the practice without any expectations. Change happens from within by itself. Day or night, when taking a walk, at office, sitting in a park, when reading, before sleep etc sit or lie down and observe your breath. Like me, make this a lifetime daily habit to have a good life. Mostly because they are very smart and their anxiety causes them to fall back on what they know. and that makes it sound like all they can talk about is themselves. I am autistic. My son & father are aspies. Having a conversation with either of them takes a freaking year it seems! I am the incredibly high energy type whereas they are both the sit and overthink it forever making people lose interest in conversing with them. causing the anxiety. Focus on your autism - most of these idiots out there dont even know what autism is. Its certainly NOT retardation - we just think differently. we see things differently. even tho my mind runs a mile a second - I still go back and reread everything I've written to make sure it comes across the right way!! LOL it takes me forever to send an email - or type this response -because I am always double checking its perfection. If you cross-reference all of those 'dis-orders' you'll see they all present the same way. Ergo - they are the same thing. They just want to put you on 20 different drugs to "fix" you - and there is nothing wrong with you. if they can keep you messed up on their pills, they keep getting your money.

I keep feeling bad about staying in my comfort zone and not hanging out with people, they get angry or annoyed at me because i couldnt do it and they dont understand why. I feel so bad that i leave them hanging, i often apologise or feel overwhelmed, then the next time they want to hang out they say “you cant come as late as last time again” and i do, because of procrastination and worry of going out of my house. Psych2Go, thank you so much for helping people better understand anxiety! I struggle with anxiety extremely bad, and the thing that I hate is when people act like it's not a big deal, or don't understand how much it effects my day-to-day life. This is extremely accurate as well. To anyone out there who has friends/family or just knows people with anxiety, please treat them well. Anxiety is absolutely terrible, and I wouldn't wish it upon the most terrible people in history. Nobody deserves to suffer from it in my opinion because it literally keeps me from enjoying life the same way that others do. Never sleeping enough. Never relaxing. Always worrying.

It kinda felt like you had all the words I could never quite explain to others, for how I feel. Thank you I have got to share this with my dad so he understands better. He never used to struggle with these things like I have, and since his stroke he has been coming to me for advice. Kinda odd how things flipped but I am super proud and happy that he actually watches these when I share them. Then we talk about it together and find where there are things he struggles with now and has no words to help term what he is going threw or feeling. So a big huge thanks to you guys!! Epically done!

I am currently self-diagnosed with social anxiety because, well...
I can't even talk to people (even my family, especially when it comes to serious stuff), and I have nearly all the symptoms of anxiety you could find.
I make up future conversations in my head, only to end up not even starting the convo because I get too scared.
I start sweating and my hands start shaking when I have to talk to someone (an example is last Friday (12th Nov) when the boiler man come around and my mum gave me a warning 1 hour before when I was in school because she was working, so I had to deal with it myself)
I don't usually go outside without my mum (unless I'm going to school) and I get really nervous when I'm about to go out without her.
Any time I do presentations or get picked to answer questions by my teachers I get clammy and sweaty, my heart rate gets faster, and my hand start shaking.
(these are only a few examples but the comment is long already)
I really should get a proper diagnosis because it gets really bad sometimes, but I'm too nervous to go to the doctors, or even tell my parents.

You described me lol.. Like you said, there's more for you.. Same with me. There's more for me. I did went to psychologists all my life but I always end up stop going.. Why? Bc I don't trust them, I don't tell them my problems bc I'm afraid to talk. I only talk when or if the other person asks me something and sometimes I don't even say anything interesting cuz to control a lil bit of my anxiety I think about other things (aka I don't pay attention at all).
The "not being able to leave the house alone" I have that problem too. I can only do it and acting fine if I have a person of trust with me and who doesn't force me to talk (mom, sister, boyfriend.. Not my dad cuz he gives me way more anxiety). I can do stuff by myself if I've done them before with someone beforehand (if you know what I mean). But that depends whether it's something with a lot of people around or if I have to talk (ex: I can go on buses and subways - the ones that do the trajectory that I know - but I can't go to a supermarket alone).
There's also that problem when your parents tell you to open the door to the guys that will fix something in the house.. I never know what to do or if I need to say something. All I want is to go back to my room lol all I'm thinking in those moments is: Should I stay in the living in case they need something? Or should I stay in the kitchen cuz it's closer to them? Should I sit or should I stay up? Should I ask if they need something or not? What the heck should I do? Lol idk it freaks me out. Those are a few examples. It's pretty complicated.
Hey! I don't know if you already do this but when I have to leave the house I need to have my earbuds with me all the time.. It makes my anxiety a tiny bit better, at least when walking on the street. If I don't have my earbuds with me I'll end up having a "internal" (I don't like to act as if I want attention from others) panic attack. With them on I get concentrated on my music and not on the outside world.
Try that out, it may work out a lil bit with you too (if you don't do it already haha). Also my last psychotherapist told me one trick to avoid looking directly at someone while talking with them. It doesn't really work with me but I always have that trick on the back of my head just in case I really need to talk with someone and don't act as if I'm rude or something alike. So what you have to do it's pretty simple.. To fake it you just have to look directly to the person's background. They will assume you're looking at them but in reality you're just focused on the view or the wall. But get your eyes focused in just one spot, don't look to the whole wall or to the whole landscape. Focus on a tree, on a something of the wall or something alike cuz if you start focusing in the whole thing you'll end up unfocused. Try it out 😊
      Sorry for the long comment.

Please get diagnosed. And if you have caring parents, ask them if you can get checked for anxiety.
I’m not a doctor, but I am someone with anxiety, and all of that you’ve pointed out could just be a sign of shyness, or you’re just introverted.
I’m not exactly the best person to describe how I feel when having anxiety, but search up symptoms of it and if it relates to you, please get it checked before it gets worse.
note: and NEVER EVER self diagnose yourself with anxiety. It’s so frustrating having it and it’s nothing to be proud of having either. Everyday you’re battling through constant pain. I’m someone with it, and so far I’ve lost all my friends because of it. So for the love of god, never self diagnose yourself with ANYTHING ever again. Cause it’s not quirky, cute and neither a flex to have it. So don’t say “I have it” when you have done nothing to prove that you have.

Your breath and mind [brain] are closely related causing stress-anxiety. I promise that. I feel like forcing myself to stop drinking regularly and putting a magnifying glass on me and my inner child was a huge step. I had to answer to myself. Spending time alone with God helped me remember who I am w o anyone else's influence. Trying to reconnect socially and explain my actions, what I've been through and why I am where I am in life is another ballgame. You have to stop beating yourself up. Forgive yourself first like you'd forgive someone else. Give your Self the love you're always giving to others. I'm trying to learn how to do this while recovering from a nervous breakdown. I am hanging in there despite what everyone might think. I have neglected myself too long because I've always been so worried about everyone else. Fill your own cup of love first and the runneth over will naturally spill out onto others without leaving you depleted. Perhaps I should stop looking for a better paying job if the pays more it’s bound to be more stressful…etc and that’s on top of the whole panic over finding the interview location, failing the interview, and the whole new people, new place, new routine fears of course not working causes fears over money.

Have you ever received a diagnosis? I have a childhood friend who took two vacations her entire adult life: 1 to California and the other to Mexico. From NJ. She ended up having the same experience you describe and went home early both times. She has a friend living in South Jersey and has only been to her home one time in 30 years, because as soon as she is 25 miles from home she starts having a panic attack. Every single "Fight, Flight or Freeze" situation she has faced in life when "fight" was the choice, she's chosen "flight" or "freeze" and is in a really bad way now at 60 because of it. She refuses any type of "head meds," and despite more than one physician referral, refuses to enter a psychiatric hospital for a complete diagnosis.

Hey there!

Don’t put out empty words for people like me, who have anxiety.
You don’t know how it is like and hopefully you never will, but please don’t post a comment to get some people’s hopes up, because for most, it never really goes away (as another person mentioned). Cause even with medication they don’t always work, and as in my case it hasn’t. And nothing in having anxiety is stressful, it’s painful. So stop pretending that you care, you don’t, and in most cases people like you just want likes and attention and praise for being “kind”. But you’re not. So, again, stop putting out empty words for others to listen to when in reality, you don’t know them, and you have no clue if they actually can get better.
So in other words, you don’t care. Cause in a year or two you’ll have forgotten that you even posted this comment. But others will come back and listen to you and believe that they will, but when some don’t, they slowly start to not trust anyone. So just be quiet, please.

I understand everything most of the comments here are saying and as a Sufferer of Anxiety, Depression, p.t.s.d, Sadness, Empathy, I know what you are all going through. Do NOT let anyone force you to go out, socialize, make you think you are lazy, weird, crazy, you're brain is wired differently. You are a Beautiful Soul and Deserve to be here. If you can get help try please. Just talking to someone you trust would help. Myself I sought help years ago and am ok now even though i am Agoraphobic, I am 100% happier knowing I'm not crazy. I started to really struggle at the beginning of this year, my second semester of my first year in a medical program. At first, the overload of tests, homework, and my job was almost manageable but I started forgetting things on tests, would feel like I was suffocating in the middle of a lab exam, would burst into tears in the middle of doing homework, and wouldn’t socialize because I felt like I had to be on top of my studying and homework at all times; otherwise, I’d fall behind and fail. I can’t even describe the pressure I felt on me from the moment I woke up and all through the day. It was just too much. I had to start seeing a counselor at my school. I wish I’d done it much sooner, but I was embarrassed to admit that I couldn’t do it all. I couldn’t; it just took me most of this semester to realize that.

I don’t watch TV, although I do binge watch UA-cam. I take medication for anxiety, and am able to fall asleep; at times, I wake up in the same position I fell asleep. Frequently I dream, dreams are usually about events in my life that were negative or about being unloved or emotionally neglected. I bury myself in hobbies like sewing, donating what I make. This post was very informative to me. I am not sure what I can do to change things. In a one on one meeting with my Dr. I can present myself as bright and cheerful, then leave and have lunch in my car alone from a drive thru. I would like to add a little tidbit-
For me at least, I have had such persistent anxiety for so long, and have become so good at masking it because it was a survival skill. I had anxiety about going on the bus, to school, because of abuse, but I was pushed onto the bus every day. I couldn’t have a meltdown and become more vulnerable, so I just had to hide it, and it became a habit. I have had actual conversations with people about anxiety, WHILE HAVING SEVERE ANXIETY, and they’ve said something like, “Well when you’re anxious again, just…be like you’re being now! Just be fun, and laugh, and let go a little, you’re always so happy and bubbly when we get you out of the house and go do stuff!”

Does anyone struggle with anxiety for being perfect? There’s no one forcing me or making me feel like I have to be perfect, it’s just me. I need to the best. I need to be a music composer, violinist, artist and writer and I need to be the best at it all. I need to start now at 13 cuz I’m already getting too old. My writing isn’t good enough. My art is just okay. My art is better than most kids at my age according to people but not to me. Even if it was I still need to be better. Even if my writing is better than the average kid, it needs to be better than the average adult. Only then I will get anywhere with it. I need to be everything. Even if people say I can’t be, I will be. I need to make that masterpiece.
I don’t even write or play my violin.
I’m scared to. I know I’m not good enough. Why bother. I don’t know anything about how to play my violin. I’m too old now. It would take too long. Why bother wasting my time. Why bother singing or anything if I don’t use it later in life. It’s a waste of time.
This is why I try not to think about my adult life goals. I go insane.💔

Kona Johnson, To feel better reduce negative thoughts with a simple practice. Your breath and mind [brain] are closely related causing stress-anxiety. Reduce negative social media. Avoid constipation as it affects the mind instantly. Best wishes. Senior Counsellor.
