The Rise and Fall of Meta Knight - The Most Overpowered Character in Smash Bros History
Вставка
- Опубліковано 20 чер 2024
- Meta Knight was once the most powerful character in Super Smash Bros Brawl, and perhaps the most overpowered character throughout the entire Smash Bros series history. Fast forward to the modern day and he remains a shadow of his former self. Today we'll be discussing the history of Meta Knight, from his rise in Brawl to fall in Ultimate.

Oh woops lol
Please don't give the Smash Remix devs any ideas...
@@arandomperson12345 please do
you should do "The fall and bigger fall of ganondorf"
It would be more like "The fall and stagnant misery of Ganondorf".
You can't really fall further than whatever Brawl Ganondorf was.
fall? yeah he's falling alright, with that recovery
To be fair ult ganon is much better then brawl ganon
@@wishtymethat's not hard to do
Lmao hell yeah, show the world the Triforce Tiers
The funny thing about how Meta Knight ended up the way he was back in Brawl, is that this is no case of a character being made later thus had less playtesting to work off of. He was the FIRST newcomer to be reveled for Brawl and the FIFTH character overall to be shown gameplay footage, meaning that he was one of the earlier developed Brawl characters thus had more playtesting than most other characters. This isn't even the case of Ice Climbers who is only broken in the context of 1v1 competitive singles, which is not what the game was aimed towards in the first place, as MK busted even in the casual level.
How the character endured 2+ years of playtesting yet still ended up in the state he was in the final game is still one of mankind's greatest questions that will likely never be answered.
sakurai wanted himself as a playable character at that time, just in the form of brawl meta knight
His playable self would likely be in the form of King Dedede, since he voices the character.
I do like the idea of a fighting game dev intentionally making his main broken. lol
Brawl Meta Knight and Marvel vs Capcom Vergil would be great friends
bro not marvel 3 vergil..
Vergil second battle theme from dmc3 intensities.
@@distortiondude7997 both versions are fire
@WalkingTNT yep, they are.
Smash 4 bayo packs their lunches
Whenever I hear some of the Brawl players describe Meta Knight and how expressive he was
I can't help but feel a little jealous and wish we had a small taste of the good that was there buried under everything else
because it sounds like there were aspects of the character that were healthy and would be nice/cool to see make a return
Really the problem wasn't Meta Knight being really good, but everyone else being really bad. (Ok Meta Knight's specials are still overtuned, but even his normals don't need to be changed if his specials were less broken.) If every character had an expressive and powerful playstyle it would be such a fun game. Meanwhile Ultimate achieved a "balanced" game by having every character be very similar.
4:00 I LOVE this scene. Is so silly and encapsulates Brawl perfectly... Well that and the Wobbling sucessor.
5:50 And even that is dubious, as Pikachu is by many considered a winning matchup for Meta Knight.
I hope Meta Knight doesn't go back to being an absolute beast, but at least go back to the high tiers in the next Smash game, I think he deserves that
Honestly being mid tier in ultimate really just means your high tier
Reminds me of Vega, or Claw from the SF series. Vega was extremely powerful in Super Turbo, with high walk speed, extremely good normals for neutral, the wall dive of nightmares, and a super that only spends its meter if it connects, making it extremely low risk. While he wasn't all that bad in Alpha 3, it was a noticeable fall, then when he returned in SF4 he was laughably bad, and didn't get all that much better. SFV didn't really give him any buffs either, and the general joke in the SF community is that Vega is still paying for his Super Turbo crimes.
1:40 ESAM WITH HAIR
5:21 I heard you could unlock Sonic in Melee, but had no idea about Bayonetta in Smash 64.
Actually about Meta Knight and how it is now "portrayed" by player who still played Brawl :
- Yes it is still "the best character" but not by much and there is this debate that "Ice Climbers" seems to be the best. The more "perfect and optimally you play" , the better Ice Climbers gets because "one grab is all they need". A Brawl top player focus on Ice Climbers and won
- Also , other players have showned that "you can beat Top Meta Knight" players with mid tiers if you are willing to play the match up and grind it. Toon Link beat Meta Knight on a grand finals , what a time to be alive lmao
- While it is true that most top players of Brawl on that era transition to Smash 4 and then to Ultimate , a lot of more counter play was developed against Meta Knight and Ice Climbers stock has been rising.
- Most players that pick up Meta Knight , do it to counter Ice Climbers because on how opressing Icies can be. If you "banned" both Meta Knight and Ice Climbers , you will see King Dee Dee stocks rising.
They reason for that is simple: Since everyone plays against almost exclusively Meta Knight and Ice Climbers, it's easier to learn how to play against them than their raw power would suggest.
In general this debate reminds me of Who is the best in Smash 64; Both Kirby and Pikachu are good against the entire cast, BUT Pikachu beats Kirby so he's better (that being said it's better to co-main those two).
If you ask me, Brawl has *only 2 top tiers* (Ice Climbers and Meta Knight) 8 high tiers, 10 mid tiers, 11 low tiers, 5 Bottom tiers, and the Ivysaur/Ganondorf tier because they're another level of awfulness. Brawl is the most lopsided Game in the franchise tiering-wise by far to the point it makes melee look balanced (It's not).
PS: If I remember correctly, people seem to care much less about tripping nowadays, which reminds me of Pokémon and critical hits, on how is just not worth worrying too much on them outside Stall; just don't dash dance and that will be fine.
Ultimate Meta Knight is by far the coolest version of him imo.
I think so too but man… I miss Mach tornado being multi-hit😢
@@andimari9194they could at least bring that back it was a cool attack
You say that but then you get 0d to death by him
@@nico2electric374 he’s my main, 0 to deathing is awesome, but I’m happy that there’s more to the character now, because most of his kit in Smash 4 was trash except for dash attack. He feels like a much more complete character in this game, and edgeguarding being better in ultimate than 4 also helps a lot.
Said no one ever
Play MK’s old mach tornado SFX to give a brawl vet ptsd
I don’t know if someone else in the comments has mentioned this, but there’s actually a mod that gets Meta Knight in Ultimate back to how he was in Brawl (granted I doubt it runs on the Switch, I just saw it in a video once). I’d love to see how top players contend with it with all the new things Ultimate has now. Ultimate is faster than Brawl was as we know, and there’s more characters with unique gimmicks. He’d still be a menace, and I’m glad he’s not like that anymore, but it’d still be fun and interesting to watch.
I remember when they lab'd MK in Smash 4 it was discovered that half of his sword didn't even have a hit box on most of his attacks. He had to make contact almost with his hand to land hits.
They gave him Melee Roy's sword but made Sheik's fair longer than Marth's LOL
i wish they would completely overhaul meta knight's design philosophy, brawl was by far too overtuned but at least his kit was complete, ever since smash 4 he feels like he fishes for dash attack and then just spams up air, why couldn't they just make his kit less crazy instead of making 2/3rds of it hot poo poo and the other 3rd of it busted as heck, nowadays he's a one trick pony that barely even works past 40% and requires too much effort for what you get out of him
Just want to say thank you for keep posting smash content. You are genuinely my favorite channel to listen to on drives and I get excited each time I see your thumbnail. 5:21 “Smash 64 Bayo” 😛🤦♀️💀
Great video, Vars. I've been waiting for you to cover this character. Meta Knight's one of my favorite video game characters, but even I won't deny he was broken in Brawl. I feel the nerfs he received in Smash 4 were just and he was still playable. Then Ultimate came and nerfed him again while buffing everyone around him and now he's a shell of his former self which hurts mu soul. I want him to be good again, but like you said at the end of the video I think the developers are afraid of making this character good again in fear of history repeating (kinda like how they gutted Bayonetta).
The clip of all 4 players using Mach Tornado at the same time never gets old
You should do the "The fall and rise of jigglypuff in modern comptitive smash" or "The rise, fall, then rise of jigglypuff in competitive smash". And if you do it you should use the smash wiki because puff in smash 4 has something.
Where is the Belmont video DX, been waiting ages for it.
I appreciated the Austin powers meta knight tier list, thank yoj
You should make a video on Yoshi and Pacman :)
I still to this day think smash ultimate meta knight is one the most underestimated characters
Meta Knight Video LETS GOOOO
Interesting take but watch Larry Lurr’s video on Meta Knight. He has research and been in the community far longer. To hear it from someone who has personally competed for so long is what makes content like this valued. Otherwise it kind of waters down smash content if you do it without much knowledge
first time ive ever seen esam with hair
I always wondered why with steve and bayonetta they didn't make them like counterpick stages where they're not outright banned but restricted. I think with really problematic characters tournaments could have rules where you can only play him once per set like if you pick say fd first game (just for example) you cannot pick it in following games of that set.
Still love playing him
Anyone else remember when Ultimate was released three weeks early in Southern America and footage of Meta Knight made us believe that he was top tier?
I'm wondering, how good would brawl meta knight be in ultimate ? I don't think he would be as broken as in Brawl, probably a top 5 character but actually balanced
I would say he would be a top 3 character alongside Sonic and Steve. We have to remember how does he work in Brawl though, which is quite different to Ultimate.
Stats: Quite similar overall, except two things: He's very slow in the air and his attacks can't clank.
General moves: The moves in general are faster, stronger in terms of damage and far more disjointed. Brawl Meta Knight was an actual swordfighter, unlike nowadays where he can't really wall out opponents.
U-Air: More reliable as an Anti-Air and up-close, slightly faster, bigger and most importantly, was a kill move KOing Pit at around 135%.
D-Tilt: More range to the point of outranging Marth's D-Tilt, less ending lag, more damage, better tripping chance and in general is a better ROB's Down tilt (Considered the best D-Tilt in ultimate).
D-Smash: Is stronger specially in knockback KOing on ledge at around 115%, is more disjointed and with less endlag. It's called as good as wolf's Down smash for a reason.
N-Air: 3 frames faster, has roughly the same KO power as the Brawl Down Smash and has and much more generous cancelling windows.
U-Air: The best aerial in Smash. ridiculous frame 2 startup, good base damage at 6%, good combo potential due to being more vertical with less endlag, more area coverage, and can even kill by itself at high percents.
D-Air: It's stronger, with more range and is a semi-spike when spaced properly.
Mach tornado: Another ridiculous move, linked off reliably due to massive disjoints alongside fixed knockback, and was a good finisher on the top of the blastzone after a barrage of up-airs.
Shuttle loop/Glide attack: It was still a good kill move in Brawl, just horizontal instead of vertical and only the aerial version works like that (Meta Knight has tornado for that). Glide attack is another reliable vertical kill move, frame 5 with good kill power and autocancels if landing fast enough.
Dimensional cape/Drill rush: The former has a banworthy glitch, but outside of that the move was an arguably better recovery move and only that.
In general it doesn't seem that overtuned compared to blocks, BUT he would indeed be overtuned because of a much better neutral game and high amount of options; Current Meta Knight's problem is his underwhelming neutral due to bad range and oddly high endlag, linear gameplan and punishable moves, something Brawl Meta Knight actually excelled at.
Still would not be despised unlike Steve and Sonic, just like people don't really despise Aegis because they don't cheese you to death and while a lot of disjoint, he still doesn't have that much reach outside D-Tilt and his lack of aerial movement is an actual weakness that cannot be played around. Also, I would see some sort of trinity with him losing to Steve and he winning to Sonic, and he would be the most popular character even if he was only 3rd place because he has the least campy strategy and more proactive strategy of the 3.
There's a mod that had a brawl meta knight playable in ultimate
I have a sneaking suspicion that if a new smash game comes out, Meta Knight will be in the same tier Kirby and Dedede are in as of now
i think this is the first time i've seen meta knight and austin powers together in one video
foxxy cleopatra
Loved Meta Knight in Brawl before I realized how good he was...felt guilty playing as him in friendlies, so was happy when they nerfed him into the ground so I could play him without regret.
Meta knight has one thing that he can do. It's his ToDs.
I've labbed a shit ton of them. People need to apply dthrow slingshot bair more, it's extremely oppressive at starting long strings, nets you ToDs very consistently, and if it doesn't racks up 60+% if applied right, regardless of DI.
For non heavies, dthrow dair up air can work on stage. It's not true, but most floaties don't have a meaningful way out of it
If they airdodge, they eat a dash attack and it resets into up air chains of your choice. There is a lot about MK I know combo wise, but my neutral in Ult sucks complete balls because I've only been labbing combos since the games inception.
Currently learning neutral with pythra. Hoping I can apply it to MK once I get good at the game instead of just having a ton of combos I labbed
Do the fall and rise of Roy
We need a game with only the broken smash characters in their prime.
I started on brawl and yes he was a true demon. Me and my friends would be playing and would always target the MK and it could still win. I think MK should get a small buff but still stay around where hes at.
If I had a nickel for every time a Kirby character was the highest tier in their debut game, I'd have two nickels... Which isn't a lot, but its weird that it happened twice.
Meta Knight da bess
Hey vars! I’m new to smash and as a fellow cloud main you really motivate me to practice and get better at the game love ur content homie :D
It’s minor but brawl actually had the same hitstun as melee it’s just you could easily hitstun cancel with all characters
Vid 5 of asking for why no one plays lucas. Its been a year since u promised!!!!😢😢
It's not so much about mk recieving a second chance but rather if the old main want to remind the rest of us
11:33 🤨
What if fighting games implemented a ban system similar to that of MOBA games? It'll be played similar to stage picking
You have to understand that high level fighting game players don't play 5 or 6 characters. Some pros might have *one* pocket pick aside from their main, but the optimal way to play is to commit yourself entirely to a single character. Naturally this depends on the game, in a game with easier to master characters you could pick up a secondary to cover your main's weak matchups better, but that's an exception, not the rule.
@@kevingriffith6011 as a Luigi OTP, someone banning Luigi would be devastating so I can only imagine how bad it'd be for gimmick one tricks and ganondorf mains
For a Smash 64 character, Bayonetta looks very detailed.
Yeah 5:12

He's still Batman in view.

Meta knight on top🔥🔥
A lot of people who complain about Steve, have no idea how busted Meta Knight was in brawl.
At least Meta Knight had to engage once. He doesn’t have any projectiles, so he has to approach.
Makes him far more interesting to watch, at least.
@@shadestrider1033 Exactly. That's the same sort of reason why Magnus Club in Kid Icarus Uprising only becomes broken with heightened weapon modifiers. I made use of this notion on the last day of KIU's official servers and this was when the Magnus Club opponent was milking TWO Powers that are commonly banned individually. Meta Knight either fights people directly or gets nowhere, and it wouldn't be hard to have provided a rule where Meta Knight would effectively have been playing as White in Chess in the event that neither player gets hit for the ENTIRE match, which assumes that neither player gets poked by a raspberry sponge.
Steve, by contrast, has a projectile command grab that is ARMORED when he already involves building overly durable walls and mining for resources to become even harder to stop if he isn't stopped from doing that.
A perfectly balanced, as all things should be.
I just hope his timeout has been sufficient so we can get Mach Tornado back in Smash 6. I’m not super familiar with values and data, but for me that was by far one of the most disappointing changes from Smash For to Ultimate
Maybe a video why noone plays meta knight?
His neutral is super linear so kinda bad vs good players + incredibly high skill ceiling in terms of advantage state. You need to a alot of shit frame perfect to unleash MKs potential. Also he is easy to combo as well (and decently light)
because everyone just plays top tiers, never got into the game because every character that I like is mid tier (Marth, MK, Shiek, Greninja, Captain Falcon) except for roy, and the characters that I hate the most are top tier, sonic, g&w, steve, snake, aegis, and rob.
Meta knight is really fun, but because the devs made poor decisions he won't be allowed to be good after brawl
And good riddance.
Even if i loved freaking my friends out when i beat him with Bowser.
Don’t use mew2kings gamefaqs as why brawl was a competitive failure, he ended up being the best player of all time of that game? And one of the best still at the end of the lifespan
