I worked at Relapse in 94-96 and I can tell you people thought that our office was in a huge skyscraper building because of the "Corporate Death" compilation disc. That was all a big parody of the music business. I guess people didn't get it. We were in a tiny office underneath a strip mall in Amish Country that had a linens shop, an empty shop, and a Christmas shop in it. Most of us made very little cash and spent our paychecks on RECORDS AND BEERS...LOTS OF BEERS. I quit college and interned there for 6 months for free, living on my savings from some illicit products sales. And then after I was hired on, I was making minimum wage. I think it was $4.25 an hour. My bosses were driving like old shitty Hondas and Datsuns. We all worked our asses off there to put out the best music at the time and run a good distro that had a good mix of everything that was underground and extreme. As far as Toxic Holocaust goes, they rule. They would have never been on the label when I worked there because my boss, Bill Y., was against anything that was anything like black metal and to me, they've got enough BM influence that I don't think Bill woulda been cool with it. Especially if I were there still and commented on how much I was into it, Bill wqulda said "No fuckin' way!" haha! I was their 1st "Black Metal Guy" employed there and it really helped out in mail-order.. "War Is Hell" is my fuckin' theme song ever since I did my 15 Months in Iraq. I've been a fan since "Evil Never Dies".
I went to the shop in Philly, loved it. Relapse at the time was my favorite, Today is the Day, Neurosis, Brutal Truth, Soilent Green, list went on and on. Never TH as a Black metal influenced band but yeah well aware they were not a label into that kind of thing, at all. Some industrial or ambient shit sure, but not Black metal. About the comment on Bathory albums being sold almost immediately as they're re-released. I feel like people who say they like certain music only because of peer pressure don't usually buy physical music or the music they claim to "like", so it probably isn't about that why they sell that fast. There's a reason why Bathory has been so liked and adored through the years so of course it sells, and it's good because of that.
