Kinda feel the need to defend the Black Metal movements of the 90's. While there indeed was a flirtation, as well as overt proponents of national socialism in a fringe part of the scene that stole quit a lot of the spotlight due to being extreme. The absolut majority of the Black Metal bands was either thematically Mythological/Fantasy, Anti-Christian (expressed as Satanic), Atheistic or Paganism and many of these got lumped into the group of NSBM. I know several people who where openly advocating for socialism and communism that got lumped into it as well. In this rare case I don't think it was the fault of the press tbh, but rather fans having a hard time to distinguish between the Pagan symbolism the NSDAP appropriated, in combination with the Black Metal elitism and gate-keeping bullying in the black metal scene leading to conflation. Most band didn't care that much about modern politics. But Nazis did what nazis always does and managed to use these symbols to create an association to the music genre and convince these kids what politics you should follow if you like such aesthetics. And some youths indeed people got influenced by it. It wasn't so much the fault of Black Metal, Pagan symbolism or the anti-culture. There's a faschistic tendency within humanity that's always at risk of awaking. The core of that isn't inherent in the cultural aesthetics of "Germanicsism", but rather in the unjust and unequal part of the natural order of humanity of all cultures which will find a way to surface if it's left untreated.
