- Ryan Callaghan and Luke Thorkildsen of Weatherby head down to Oklahoma to chase a lesser know huntable species of the Sooner State - the eastern mule deer. Cal and Luke talk with the state university’s wildlife ecologist Coltor Chitwood, wildlife researcher Kirk Kuklinski, and Chief Conservation Officer from the Mule Deer Foundation Steve Belinda to discuss the current state of mule deer in the region. To help better understand their population, Cal and Luke hit the desolate hills in hopes of finding an Okie Muley in The Panhandle. Presented by Weatherby

Meat eater caught my attention years ago because it told a story, not just video of a harvest. Cal’s conservation framing is my favorite type of meat eater content.
"Drink it in I deserve this"..sorry Cal I full on laughed until I cried, a guy of your experience still taking a scope to right between the eyes, you handled it perfectly
Cal episodes are some of my favs
SAME..
Cal is great.Humility is a gift. I hope to be as good at it as he is. Congratulations on a successful hunt 👍👍
The reason i love watching meateater is that they hunt in such cool places
Finally! Been too long since Cal got a feature!
Agreed!
I have been hunting in the Ok Panhandle near where this was shot for 15 years. Beautiful country
Cal is one of my fav meateater dudes, always enjoy his feature content!
Great Job Cal
You guys are dominating the outdoors media space. Keep up the great and hard work
Welp, there’s going to be a hell of a lot more people hunting mule deer in Oklahoma this year.
My thoughts exactly. Cool to see Oklahoma featured but I know the end result.
Wonder if it’s going to turn into Kansas on how they do their mule deer? But yes the meat eater effect will ruin another under the radar hunt
@@nicksummerfield5408 I don’t think you can hunt them with a rifle or muzzleloader on public land anymore. So that should help keep the numbers up a little bit anyway.
@@colberjsthe last time I checked non residents were limited to muzzleloader and archery (Kansas) Residents same but they have a chance to use a rifle.
Them states on the eastern front fly under the radar and to me it’s more viable option then applying in a high demand state
That’s why Steve’s brother is pissed and I kinda agree even tho it’s kind of greedy of me to think that way. More people hunting is good for the longevity of hunting it just makes it hard to get tags
God love you Cal! As a fellow Idahoan I’d love to meet you! Thank you for your commitment to preservation! Your videos are so much more than the other guys!
I’m noticed his injury to the noggin early on in the video. It’s cool to see that it happened while filming. Hate that it happened, glad you got a deer, keep up the good work guys.
I'm here for the scenery as much as I am for the thrill of the hunt.
Sorry fellas but the music's at a level where I can't hear what's being said. And I'd like to hear what's going on.
Get your ears checked, levels are fine. You can always mute it, turn on captions if it's that bothersome..
Much, much rather hear Cal talking or just hear the wind or footsteps in the grass. "Music" does nothing for me.
Agreed. Tired of all the extra unnecessary music
@@Hanibul_Lecktorhow do you mute the music and not the voices?
Quit bitc#%ng and just enjoy. It’s free content. Sounds perfect and nice work
"Smell us now, Ma!" Cal is awesome. MeatEater is the best hunting and preservation show period. Maybe turn down the music a little bit.
Great film Cal! Filming, Editing and Music were on point.
It baffles the people who don't know any better that it is hunters who are the most enthusiastic about the conservation of animals. They work with landowners, government agencies, and game commissions to ensure a healthy and stable population, so that they can hunt. It isn't hunting for sport or elimination - it's for food. Somethings every species has done since the beginning of time.
I think that’s called a dork stamp!
Nice video and thanks for sharing your full experience
Man the OK panhandle seems awesome. Would love to spend two weeks backpacking, climbing, and hunting in this area. Super cool episode.
Just want to say thanks for doing these videos, they are relaxing when Im stuck inside and need something to calm my mind.
what a wonderful production! you guys tell the story of life and share factual informative information. more please.
Cal/Meateater... the music in this one is so good
Great video! And the music was great. Didn’t think it was too loud at all.
Couldn't help but laugh when Callahan scoped himself. Great show and great information guys.
I love cal’s hunt videos
Been living in the panhandle for over 20 years, I would never leave the hospitality
Favorite hunts have been in the panhandle behind a good bird dog or under a little tree listening to the gobblers
My best memories are in the panhandle
Cal running Leupold! Love it!
Ryan probably my most favourite hunter on the show the guys just a chad .
Cals scope eye is an editing nightmare 😂
Happens to the best of us
@@danc6402 it does , I just mean some of the b roll and scenes before he scoped himself show the scar
Love this video! I’ve spent a lot of time in those canyons and it sure is rough country
Edit it so when people are talking there is no music.
My home state featured? Time to watch on repeat.
What a beautiful countryside. I wish I could travel around and see some new areas. I’ve been stuck in northern CA for 30 years
Its good to see a popular hunting show helping to normalize the use of suppressors for hunting. I've known way too many people who's perception of suppressors is the hollywood idea that they are purely an assassination weapon.
I've hunted very similar looking places in SE Colorado, along our state line with OK. Beautiful and understated parts of the country. Thanks for showing the PJ wooded hills and canyons!
Oklahoma mule deer is my new bucket list.
Better have some money saved up and your bucket list will be easy to fill.
My one and only mule deer buck came from Beaver PHA on a draw special hunt. A small 3 x 4. It was the first hunt on the newly acquired area. I had a plan in my head, talked to the biologist, and he told me it was a “good plan”. I earned every ounce of him as I was 1 1/2 miles from the parking area. Same place my cousin from Pennsylvania killed his best whitetail buck ever. They are there but you will earn them.
Gotta admire Cal.. Didn’t try and hide from it.
I hunt near there. I’ve hunted among the mule deer. The only guarantee I can give is that Cal will be finding those grass burs in his gear for months 😂
Wichita Mountains? I’m from NW Oklahoma.
My bad he just said the panhandle
Dang...can't wait to watch this later. Saw it, and had to comment. But going to wait till prime time tonight
Cal, I have the same scar. It does keep one humble. That said, congrats on the deer
Great video. I live in north western Oklahoma and I have only seen a few mule deer around here but when I lived in the NorthWest side of North Dakota I saw lots of
Good amount of Mule deer up by Freedom Oklahoma.
Gotta love it when they tell the world: "We don't know how many are here, we don't know anything about how they survive, but please come here to hunt them so we can take your money!"...
What great videos, friend. Greetings from Culiacan, Sinaloa. A big hug and blessings.
Me and my brother and nephew are going this fall. Chased whitetails my entire life in my great state of Oklahoma but never mulie😊s.
I’ve only ever came across them wild turkey hunting or chasing quail; never hunted deer out that way with my area being so rich (NE OK)
@@TJ-bg4fw well I'm in the bottom of the state not complaining big deer around here no mule deer though.
I live in southeast Oklahoma. I went to the panhandle a few years ago bow hunting. Been planning on doing it again soon. If I can ever get time off from work.
It happens to the best of us !! Scope scar !!!
Mine was a prone shot 300 win mag at 23 years old I will always remember it …👍🏽
It's crazy how much that place looks like South West Utah.
I have lived and hunted in Oklahoma my entire life. Started doing my rifle season in western OK with the hopes of coming across a Muley while Whitetail Hunting. No luck yet, maybe this is the year.
“I deserve this” 😂. It happens Cal, great episode
That was that bucks best two seconds of its life😂
I've been coming , coming, watching, listening, learning from meateater for well over a decade. I can accredit my most proud kills species wide from their knowledge and educational prowess and ability to teach. But please drop the music. Especially with CAL. Unless he plays it on right handed strung moose antler. Love ya
Today I learned you can hunt mule deer in Oklahoma. Beautiful country in the panhandle!
I've been blessed to take a very nice mule deer buck in the panhandle of OK back in 2017. I've hunted out there almost every year since, but we tend to pass on the muleys unless they are for sure shooters because we want to see more of them. Great video. Great buck and its always nice to take a couple whitetail does.
So many does here man; I never have empty freezer space after rifle closes lol
That stache is unruly! Best there's a few deer finding sanctuary in that thicket!
All jokes aside, love the content!
Man, that country looks brutal. It's a whole lot of different wilderness... which is what I love, "wilderness". My energy driven hunting is about the land, and wilderness is what it's about for me. I love the wild animals, small and large. And I love the management of big game animals, maintaining a healthy and "wild" herd (black bears and most definitely wolves also). I'm very much enthused about hunting wolves here in Idaho. Though filling my tag and my freezer is really my excuse to be a part of the wilderness. I love meat, without it I am less than half of man, less than human. My diet is my drive also. Wild game meat is a whole lot of different animal in my living whole... it's wholesome. Just like a living wilderness is the wholesome diet for my spirit. My human spirit gets fed. Y'alls "MEAT EATER" stuff is great. The videos you folks all produce are indeed my favorite. Keep it up, knowing y'all will do.
THANK YOU
Ryan looks to have a Scope Ring cut on his forehead..... I bet that smarted some. An event that plagues us all. Just one tough position on a stalk and POW, scope contact. Good video and a great subject to tackle too.
That's a good looking muley
The main reason no one knows about hunting mule deer in oklahoma is because you have to have permission on property that holds them in a very narrow area of the state.
I love Ryan Callaghan
Enjoyed your video as always
Spotted that weatherby eyebrow scab at the start of the video and knew it was coming, we’ve all been there mate!
How can a state issue unlimited tags if they don't have the data to support it? This should have been the deciding factor of how many tags can be issued. Great video as usual!
Great episode, music was too loud to hear a lot of what was being said unfortunately
great content Cal always love your videos and the always looking for all the information on the areas and on the species your hunting and getting it out to us all , I Believe with all the fires in the US and Canada we are going to see a lot of movement of all species and are far more widely despersted then we know , Why have they not put up Drones to check where the muleys are ,
duo is back
I love this video, the only problem now is that the Panhandle might just get flooded with hunters and take out all the Muledeer..
You are exactly right. We are already over taxed with hunters on such a small population.
It already happened during COVID on the limited public lands out there. However, good luck finding access that you won't pay an arm and a leg for.
I used to watch Walker's Cay Chronicles with Flip Pallot a decade ago and he had good story telling and writing skills. You guys kinda follow that theme.
Can you please ask Cal what sunglasses he is wearing? I really want to get some so I can pretend to be as cool as him! They are awesome
Love cal
My home state ❤
Callaghan is a really cool guy
As soon as I saw you talking earlier in the video, I knew what it was 😅
Wait until folks find out that same area also has more than just the occasional big horn sheep creeping in from Colorado. Every year I’m out there I’ve seen and photographed them. Elk, mule deer, whitetail, pronghorn, black bear, mountain lion, and bighorn sheep. Unique area but it’s almost entirely private land. Also, the Santa Fe trail strolled through this same area.
I'm sorry to say but I have never been so bored with one of Meateater's productions, I couldn't make it past the 7:27 mark. I think you guys need to take some notes from Steven Renella when it comes to narration, and look at what your objective for each episode. I'm a huge fan, but this one put me to sleep. Sorry if i seem harsh, but that's my feedback.
In southwest Oklahoma, we have mule deer and a growing number of elk. Sounds crazy but true
I absolutely agree that all areas within
fringe populations should have a Whitetail doe tag included.
Callaghan getting scoped. I chuckled out loud.
Cal,you the man. Always prefer your videos but wanted to ask a quick question in regards to this hunt. What's with the suppressed rifles? Love the look but wondering about the practicality in regards to this hunt...thanks for you time. Keep the adventures coming!
Good ole Cal
I miss the cooking and eating parts of these episodes.
We have elk around Clayton Oklahoma as well lots of people don’t know it there used to be quite a few but they are slowly disappearing
Did Cal get scoped?? Looks suspiciously like it! Great topic and episode, keep it up guys.
Cal...Dude.. lol. As soon as you broke that shot with that lean back rifle hold I said to myself "he just busted himself in the face with that recoil" lol. I busted my own lip open with my thumb knuckle when I killed my first gobbler. I'm not laughing at you, I'm laughing with you.😂
Great as usual!!!
I saw alot of leupold optics in this episode.. Hmmmm, maybe they are part of the team these days?
Wildlife should have top priority on public land.
Great video Cal. What shades are you running? Leupold?
Love the Meateater BUT THAT BACKGROUND MUSIC IS ABOUT DONE IT FOR ME, TOTALLY WAY TO LOUD
ARE YOU SURE ? Music levels are fine, relax buddy.
@@Hanibul_Lecktor no they really aren’t, it’s a poorly sound mix job. The music is way too loud compared to the dialog. Many other people have pointed it out.
Check your settings
@@jordanbridges it’s not settings, it’s sound mix of the actual video. Your settings don’t change the volume proportions a video maker edits with… and your settings would have no way to differentiate the two audio channels to even manipulate them because once uploaded, the audio for a video is a single channel audio.
You have no idea what you’re talking about. It is legitimately true that this video does have the music volume a tad high compared to the dialogue audio. This was an error in the editing room. It happens.
@wiseinvestments5134 people are like lemurs, can't think for themselves. Sound is fine, new video coming soon..
Amazing, big bucks live in those badlands.
Growing up in the panhandle we all knew there were mulies there back in the 80s but so little public to hunt on.
I’ve never seen the plastic arm sleeves before. That’s kinda nice
Nice hunt.
Woohoo!!! Even awesome hunters are still getting scoped!!! 😂
Can you turn the music up louder?
ripper episode, muleys interest me for sure. nawt bahhd on the weatherby eyebrow Cal
Came here for Cals mustache :D
Not me rubbing the scar on my right eyebrow lol
Where are they hunting deer with a rifle out west? All that panhandle area is archery, muzzleload, or shotgun according to Oklahoma wildlife department website.
Dang I can feel that Scope kiss 😬 back when I was 14 years old !! Just watch Melissa Bachman shoot a Kodiak bear but her cap took the hit
I was about to comment that it looked like he scoped himself in some of the earlier shots of the episode… cut forward to the hunt and sure enough lol
Back ground music is a big no go.
