Personally, I'd tap the screw stud down onto the button. Better to mar the stud than the actual button that will show on the outside. Outside of pants of jeans or work clothes for the suspender's braces are fine. Formal wear protocols dictate the buttons and suspender braces be placed inside the pants, not the outside of pants.

That is a good point. I wasn't too concerned about getting any blemishes on the buttons as they are just work pants.

That counter is a 1/2 inch steel welding table. Good advice though if it was granite.
