the hammer together buttons suck too. The stud half can work through the material of your pants leaving a hole unless you place a washer between the stud and your pants. Also they occasionally just come apart. Go with sew on buttons every time.

My suspenders have a leather button pants strap as well as a clamp style attachment?
Hi John, It sounds like you have convertible suspenders, they come with both clip and button attachments. Those types of suspenders give you the option of using them as clip or button suspenders. What you need to do is open up the ends (there should be a snap or a button) and take out the attachment that you do not want to use. Hope that helps!
Maybe I'm weird, but I think the buttons would look better on the outside -- especially with jeans. Am I missing something?
Hi Lyle, Some folks do feel the same as you. Particularly with jeans or work pants. People who wear logger or other work button suspenders put the buttons on the outside because the leather strap connectors on the heavy duty suspenders are so big that they are much easier to put on the outside of the pants. And some jean wearers do it for that reason or just for looks. But the majority of dressy suspender wearers put the buttons on the inside to hide them.
I use clip-on buttons that show button (brass) on outside. He's correct about pant material thickness - the thicker the better. I've noticed Jean makers are using ever thinner material - have to keep that in mind when buying jeans.
