  • Audi TT Mk1 Coilovers :: This doens't end well!
We set out to swap out the stock suspension for a set of custom coil overs ordered from the UK. We ran into issues with the replacement strut fitting in the steering knuckle. And it spiraled from there...

as a mechanic workong on these cars for over a decade that was 100% installer error. theres a few tricks of the trade to spread the strut clamp on the knuckle. BUT you could get new knuckles all around and it would still be cheaper then me installing those coils on a 20 year old car. coils are a pita on a daily trust me.

That’s unreal. I know they won’t, but they should cover the cost of the replacement knuckle since it was their error that caused this.

Let me see what we hear from the company. Seems others who have this kit they slid in just like the stock struts. That was NOT the case on these! Sizing was wrong all over the place. New bearing and hub are in hand, replacement knuckle arrives tomorrow.

@@spiguyversgarage9452 did you measure the stock strut diameter vs the new coil over? It's a tight fit.

My micrometer batteries are dead, but it’s noticeably bigger in diameter. Look at the photos of how wide it is spread after forcing it into the knuckle. Not to mention it doesn’t have the correct length.

I have the normal spreader tool, but that doesn’t come close to how wide I had to go. I’d estimate I was 3-4 times as wide as the tool opens it. The tool easily allows the stock one to slide in and out.

lol talk about a bull in a china shop ive never seen a knuckle broke like that on a audi-vw. sure on a subaru (they have a clamp type arrangement on the lower ball joint.) but not cars like these ive been woking on these cars since they were new.
