Music video by Janet Jackson performing When I Think Of You. (C) 1986 A&M Records
Who's listening in 2024???
Always and forever ❤
I’m with ya 😢
My happy place is here 😁😀🙌🏾
She the closet thing to Micheal that's alive
Me 😊. One of the great bass lines.
Almost in tears...things have changed so much. Sometimes you have to go back in time to keep your sanity. Loved theses days.
Ditto..in tears...1987, Chicago...simpler times..
Stop Wrong Way....
Your exaclty Right! I wish there was a time machine where we could go back to the 80's
Happy Times ✨🌟✨✌🏼️
Completely agree. I feel the same.I hate what the world has become in a lot of ways compared to the way it used to be.
People will try to say,"Oh, you just don't like change. You're just getting older."
But that's not it; There's something 𝘸𝘳𝘰𝘯𝘨 with the world today. And the children of the 80's feel it especially.
Big fun
I agree. Somebody build a time machine so we can all go back
Does anybody else smile through the whole video? It's such a feel good song.🤗 just makes me happy i luv it 💖.
Yes, it's exuberant and lavish! No record label today would bother to produce videos like this one (or Money For Nothing, Take On Me, Walk This Way, New Year's Day, etc).
Definitely full of great beautiful energy.
Love ❤️ one another and you will live forever ❤️
I'm smiling now and bopping my head 💥
I don’t know why but I cried. Everything was perfect in 80s. Now we have never be able to go back in 80s.
I was 16 had my brand new Maxima
I'm an 70's baby and It's 2023 and this still makes me dance and feel free! Forever a vibe!
May I have this dance

They just don't make music or videos like this anymore.
Yes they do. you're just not paying attention
+Medy Lema LOL. Not even close. So wrong, bro
+Frankincensed this means that you're not paying attention either.
Medy Lema Oh, I pay attention, alright. And that's the problem. lol
+Kels Mermaid Nowadays it's only about sex -_-
I am in this video. I’m at the 3:25 mark. The guy dressed in black arguing with the girl in the red dress. I was Paula Abdul‘s apartment manager at a time in Hollywood. She did the choreography for Janet Jackson’s videos at the time. Was at the studio for two days for me to get all of one or two seconds on screen..😆 It was so much fun!
Brian Hughes, very good. I wish I had more opportunity to perform.
Wow! Very lucky! I absolutely love this vid. Loved the 80s so much.
I see you how cool right I had to rewind three times but I see it nice
Wow x
@Brian Hughes: What an amazing memory for you! 😊
Janet has one of the most beautiful smiles I've ever seen.

I strongly agree with you!! An infectious, sexy smile she has ♥️🤗
Besides her brother Michael. :)
Just like her brother's smile... Diamond smile!

Who's here bc of the video 'Paula teaching choreography to Janet, 1986' suddenly popping up in their feed??! 😉💖
Lol yup. But apparently I’ve been here before because I’ve already liked the video.
Haha, I’m not, but I liked watching that!

The 80s were the absolute best decade to be a teenager. I soooo miss the 80s. It was the last great American decade.

This is so sweet. Not gross. Not vulgar. Miss the 80’s.
I agree (:
Seriously! Nowadays it's all trash. This was real music.
Yes today's music is to explicit or to Demonic . Music in the 80's/90's was more about fun and having a good time
@@keepthefaith9594 I mean Janet became really explicit a few years after this. The new generation lacks talent, and that is their problem.
Music back then wasn't filled with with swearing and highly sexualised lyrics and music videos. Its nice to take a trip down memory lane
There will never be anything like the 80's ever again!!!!

She did what Michael did. She made it great, and then she made it better. 1814.
I went back in time with her Live as well in Orlando Florida. It was a good show.
There are certain 80’s songs that give me an overwhelmingly painful and bittersweet sense of nostalgia. This is definitely one of them.
Agree! I feel that way about lots of Janet's songs, especially Pleasure Principal & Escapade. Such a fun vibe, so much awesome energy.
I wasn’t even born until 92 but I cry everytime I hear this song idk there’s something about it

💕💕
Always
I'm 62 years old and when I listen to this I want to skip down the street. I know that's what feeling alive is like!
I got cheered up...
This kinda music brings back the joy i felt in my childhood pure euphoria
That whole 90s R&B sound got that lost euphoria sound to it.. Like, I can't imagine people having the same feeling about some of the songs today, unless it's driven by memory and not necessary the sound itself..
There's something about this song that makes me feel carefreely nostalgic and happy.
Me too. Same with Escapade.
Pinklaeti I second that
Yes, it's one of those songs that is, to me, an indispensable aspect of life and the universe, as if it was always intended to exist.
Also, Janet overall was such a non-divisive person back then, like Michael. They were just people without seeming to have any attachment to labels, except, of course, that they are/were tremendously talented.
Pinklaeti - me too
Absolutely!
Remember when videos were so fun to look at. Now it's just stupid reality shows.
Your Right. Speaking About Reality Show's. Maybe The Three Of Us Can Have Our Owe Reality Novela Shows. Larry In The Beat Goes On. Bertha In Brass In Pocket. Me The Gal Is Large. Lol

I can't believe Paula Abdul choreographed all of this DAMN
Yes, she did, and the media is always trying to put them as rivals, but they are very good friends.
She didn't. She worked alongside Hollywood Legend Michael Kidd
Some scenes were STAGED by Hollywood choreographer Michael Kidd. The video was choreographed by Paula Abdul. You can see the segments have trademark Paula moves. It’s a great collaboration. 💙
Paula with a bottle of wine in one hand.....
She's amazing.
When talent mattered and not just sex.
Now all these people are hyping up trash like "WAP".
👏👏👏👏
Lmao didn’t Madonna and prince exist then? Rick James??? Lmao byeee
@@zairesyoutube Even Janet was selling sex, let's not kid ourselves. Just look at the lyrics for Janet's song "All for You":
[Refrain]
"All my girls at the party, look at that body
Shakin' that thing like you never did see
Got a nice package alright, guess I'm gonna have to ride it tonight
All my girls at the party, look at that body
Shakin' that thing like you never did see
Got a nice package alright"
The fact of the matter is, sex is normal, and singing about it doesn't mean you don't have talent. Songs can be about anything, it's still a song. But the issue is that too many make sex the focal point of their music, and become too vulgar with it. And the song quality starts dropping.
Amen!!!!!
Whenever I need to be reminded of my energy frequency, I come to Janet. For some reason her music resonates in my cells and makes them feel the way they did when I was a girl listening to her music in complete joy. Thank you forever, Miss Jackson!!!!!

Well. There are a lot of clever edit points ( I look for them myself when my own work when a billboard is passing the camera suddenly that's an opportunity to cut for set things up a new and then continue with the shop into another place but you never know it because it looks I look for them to myself when my old work when it billboard is passing the camera suddenly that's an opportunity to cut for set things up a new and then continue with the shop into another place but you never know it because it looks continuous. like when she slides down the railing the zoom the camera pass and show the ground I need to tell this a little bit of a fudge there but just but just barely and to do it in those days without motion control cameras and stuff yeah it's pretty amazing. Sure feels that way when all of the horrible stuff happening in the world is being recorded by people with cell phones and then booted up on social media for the world to see. Pop Culture is still awful regardless.
I'd rather go back to 88-93 and live there on repeat. No smart phones, no social media, no internet, 29 channels of mostly quality TV, amazing music, cartoons, video games, the commercials were larger than life, cozy and imaganitive, you were more honed in and concentrated on what you were doing because there was far less distractions. @@EJM659 Well, I think at this point, everyone's a little turned-off by MJ. But, the 80's were the first decade of the modern era. The 80's were the transitional decade between today and everything that came before today. And being a kid in the 80's was magical because we all knew that everything was changing, and we were going to be the people in charge of a new world. The children of the 80's revolutionized the human experience. And then our racist grandparents put an old, orange, bigot in office, and gave us another opportunity to demonstrate why the children of the 80's will always be remembered as a revolutionary generation.
Just more proof that the 80s were the last full great decade.

Oh no, they did. But like I said. The 80s were the last GREAT decade. The 90s were the start of entertainers not musicians. Computers not people. Etc. it was a good decade, but it wasn’t the 80s.
This is what Paula Abdul said about this video:
"There was only one edit in this entire video. Otherwise, it was all one take. It was very, very, very labor-intensive. I worked with Julian Temple, who was the director, and we brought in [legendary choreographer] Michael Kidd. At the time I think Michael was in his late sixties, and it was an honor to be able to work with someone who was around during the MGM classics, who understood what we were trying to do. We brought him in to work with us to really make it seamless, and it was incredible.
"There were so many performers in that video, and just being able to get every scene knocked out and timed perfectly… oh my God, we probably spent an entire day just mapping it out, without a camera at first, and then an entire day working with the steadicam operator. We used an entire soundstage on the Fox lot. There were so many moving parts to it. It was a lot of rehearsal; I think we had four days altogether on the soundstage. I had a ton of extras, character actors, fire hydrants going off at the right timing. It was insane! But it was so rewarding, and every member of that video - from production to every single extra to every dancer - felt like something huge was accomplished. It was big."
Alice Cheung wow, where did you get this excerpt on what The Paula Abdul said, its awesome!
it was done in 2 takes check 3.19
Alice Cheung: I think it was filmed to look it was only one edit, but its edited a lot actually. Janet was inspired by a film Julian Temple directed where the opening scene was all one take. There is a horrible edit of when Janet is on the balcony and she walks into her house at the 1:24 mark. It goes from the set to a soundstage. Look in the upper right hand corner and you can see the backdrop of the stage. I am surprised no one noticed or was it intentional?
@@mrbrownroyyal There's another when she slides down the stair banister, she just appears in the middle of the street lol, that one was pretty obvious to me. They sort of hide the cuts with swift camera movements and strategic obstructions

Pish posh! The world wasn't a better place in the 1980s. I am 60 years old and remember the 1980s well. Things were different but certainly not better.
I think we trick ourselves into thinking the past was better because we were younger then, healthier, and in better shape. We forget about all the trials and troubles we went through back then and only remember the good times.

I don't care if 1986 was 34 years ago, I can still dance!
Let's do this again 😎
That’s right🌹
Was so exhilarating when I danced to this in the clubs!! I even copied some of the moves! 😸
I hear ya :) If I were in a wheelchair, with a walker, a cane, and a rollator, I'd still be able to shake my booty and bop my head!
👍👍exact !😁
I was a teen metalhead in '86 when this song was new. But I dug pop music too, and this video always made me feel good. Janet's music and image had a way of reaching people that may not have naturally gravitated to this style. I even saw her live in '93, one of the best shows I've ever seen. God I miss this era.
I also used to think this video was shot all in one continuous take, now all the edits are obvious but still just a brilliant video;
That's what I'm talkin' 'bout!! It makes you feel good. That is it in a nutshell.
Only about 3 edits...when they say smile and the men appear on steps...when she goes through the door and maybe one more when she slides down the stairwell and lands. But even though there are edits, it actually was shot in ONE take them they re did a few to smoothen them out.
This is such a striking difference between the 1960s-90s and today. The potential of new acts to reach beyond the border of their genre, their core fans, and impact people who are into quite different kinds of music - whether those people are fans or musicians - that ability has practically disappeared. And it's not because "today's musicians and artists are so much worse" but because the methods of the industry, the channels of markering of today, pretty much block that kind of wide, genre-crossing breakthrough, and the mixing of different backgrounds.
@@louise_rose I agree, though there are perhaps a few exceptions. Lady Gaga has a lot of respect and genuine fans in the rock and heavy metal community, myself included. Some of them might be afraid to admit it, lol. I know there are other examples but that one jumps out.
@@fuzzo73 Also, this is a nice homage to old Hollywood musicals. The instrumentation is modern soul/r'n'b of course, but the settings, the Technicolor-style photography, the obvious "studio look" of the set and the entire tone of the film are very reminiscent of the "Singing in the Rain" and "My Fair Lady" era ( I used to watch those classics on TCM) :).
Even the song , with a different (orchestral) arrangement wouldn't have needed a lot of rewriting to fit into a 1950s film. Janet was aware of this for sure; she invited Cyd Charisse for a well-placed cameo in another video around the same time.
What a nostalgia, the 80s simply the best decade.
I loved the 60’s the best....I’m old.
I remember every radio station and clothing store would play this song
When this song came out I was walking with my girlfriend then in Manhattan by Central park,
I heard the song from afar??? Getting closer???? To our surprise it was about 15 people on skates
dancing and rolling out of the park. The guy with the boombox playing this song stopped skating,
and placed it in the middle of the road. And started to dance around it with everyone else, in the middle of the road 4 lanes. Cars stopped didn't beep nothing and we just were like OMG bliss. NOBODY BEEPED. The song was just about to end the guy picks up the radio and the 15 people just skated down the side street and nobody said SHIT!
Life was just better then, it was a mix. And we enjoyed each others company! 80's RULE
God Bless
Amazing! Wonderful memories. Thanks for sharing 👍🏼🙂
The Gift thanks for the memories. Being a teen in the 80's was magical-nothing like it. So much great music and plenty of fun. God Bless 🙌
To be in New York at that epic time is so special. Wow. Jealous. You've described to me (an English teenager at the time) what it was like. I dreamed to be sitting on one of the walls outside the old tenement houses (which now go for millions) watching break dancers etc all day long. 🤣
You just described a commercial
its sad because we now have these teenyboppers listening to mumble rap regaeton pop garbage..
the production level of Janet and Michael's music video back then was like a production of a short Hollywood box office film
Mike and Janet always had the best videos hands down
Yup, Thriller was truly ICONIC then, now, and forever!!!
no doubt partly because a lot of their directors had or would have feature film experience.
I was JUST thinking that. I was saying to myself, that's a big ass sound stage😂😂
@@kialoves2543 Janet hired Julien Temple as both she and Michael were huge fans of his 1986 film Absolute Beginners
35 years ago, TODAY, 7-5-86, her album was #1 in the land!!
Anthony Ogans Control was released by Janet Jackson on 2/4/86 which was around the August 85 to July 86 Year.
The generation of today will never know how lucky we were to have such great music of this era
They’re lucky to have easy access to be able to listen to all of it too
This video is a masterpiece
The best Janet Jackson's video there is. Janet and her brother Michel knew their stuff regarding making videos. They knew about choregraphing ,along with their dancing. WOW!!
Thanks to Paula Abdul. She choreographed this for Janet. Great dancer. Thanks Paula for great 80's videos.
'If' is quite a good video as well ..
So great songs in 1986. We had a fantastic time every Weekend in the clubs. Best times ever! Time has changed so much !
It was Janet’s FIRST #1!! Released August 29,1986 on her big bro’s 28th Birthday! Jimmy & Terry released it as a Birthday present for MJ.
36 years ago, today, my girl had her FIRST #1 song!!!.....10/11/86!!
Anthony Ogans Absolutely. And she's been there NINE times since.
I forgot to put the word "first". I changed it!
So amazing! I love her choreographies and Broadway style (courtesy of Paula Abdul). It is such a disgrace that here in the UK she has not had a single #1 but J-Ho had 3!!
Had just turned 22 yrs old day before @_@
Michael and Janet Jackson kind of ruled the 80s music scene in my opinion. The mere fact that their fans weren't just Black folk, but people of all races, nationalities, and colors, made it bangin'!
Excellent point!!!
If it were not for Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis contribution, her singing career would have gone down the drain.
@@RestyMervinPonioThat could be said for just about every artist. It was the artist/producer connection that made the artists as well as the producers great.
No one (or two) people rules the 80s.
Not kinda and not just your opinion
Janet’s very beautiful and she still is gorgeous as ever.
Yess just thinking that, sexy as hell
Amen brother

I may have an MJ profile pic,
I’m really a female
I used to wait for this to come on mtv. It was one of those videos that you wanted to rewatch over and over. We didn’t have UA-cam back then.
Oklahoma was a pilot stare for MTV!! we were addicted before the rest of the country even knew!! 😂 I’ll never forget Casey and the weekly top 40 I had cassette ready to record my favs. All our music had talking at beginning and ends of songs.
MICHAEL JACKSON AND JANET JACKSON ARE THE GREATEST POP STARS OF ALL TIMES!!🤩
Yes yes yes
Agreed, Absolutely
There's a special MTV series called MTV's timelines with Michael Jackson, Prince, Madonna, and Janet Jackson 4 of the most historically iconic musical performers of their times if not all times who have and still make impacting influences in pop music culture.
An it ain't even CLOSE !!!
Facts
Watching this August 2023,,, anyone else here? I LOVED this video in the 80’s now I’m freakin 66 and still watching, listening,,, she was the queen of dance, and those dance moves never get old!
Janet Jackson voice, her look, her dance moves, brings instantaneous joy. I really luv that woman. Always have and always will.
The 80's weren't perfect but at least we knew how to have fun.

This is one of those " Cure for happiness " songs, whenever I feel sad, all I have to do is play this video and I'm quickly happy again. The video, the song, the lyrics, this is what you called pure perfection at it's best.
This video is so quintessentially 80's I am in love.
Janet was an innovative person who is a beautiful and creative this video is a landmark , If Janet hadn't done this video there would be no Britneys Christinas Jlo's Every female R&B artist took this style even Madonna from Miss Jackson A Beautiful Natural Singer ♥♥♥♥♥
tim alex Pharell 🙄
tim alex Your a very good looking guy Tim. I only checked you out cause I have a friend that has the exact same full name as you. Lol
Born in 89 but my wife was Born in 87 but our families always played these songs growing up and we obviously were exposed to this. Happy to say this Song was played at our wedding ❤ This song came out in 86! 70s 80s & 90s music will last forever
So happy she is still with us and can see the lasting effect her music had for us. Love her in GOOD times, too! She's beautiful inside and out🥰
The choreography and flow from place to place on the set is amazing.
Yes! I want to see the story behind the production and how they did this.
@@itznotme58 Well - you can PLAN and Design all you want - but to actually have a performance this complex come out as wonderfully perfect as it did, involves a certain amount of good fortune in having a whole crowd of talented, inspired performers working literally in top form - and with a great attitude that you can actually feel being projected outward.
This is one of my favorite Janet songs and for me one word and emotion sums it up. Joy. This video always seemed like so much fun and the spirit of Janet Jackson is signified in it. This song sounds like her megawatt smile. She sings with happiness and exuberance and it is this sound that is invoked in her trademark hits. Years later you will hear it on "Escapade", "Alright", "Miss You Much", "Because of Love", "You Want This", "Go Deep", "Together Again", "All For You", "Island Life", "What's Ur Name", right on up to "Dammn Baby." Consistency in her craft is what makes her a true legend and a real artist. This is why she can still make hits today. Her talent, recognition and artistry goes way beyond her famous last name and family.

I strongly agree with you and she will always and forever stand the test of time..JJ fan for life!!
I'd add 'Made For Now' to those you listed.

Ms Lady Couldn't have said it better myself!!!
Ms Lady SIGH!MISS THESE DAYS, WE WERE SO YOUNG!HAPPY!
It was a good time to be a kid in these days. Sad thing now is kids wake up to shitty ass rap music and faux R&B songs jacked up on sex and violence. Sad state of affairs America.
Not only America...
The whole Western world... :(
Katya_L where are you?

They just don’t make this kind of music anymore. 🎉❤

This song is etched in my brain and takes me back to when I was a teenager listening to this wonderful music on my Sony Walkman. Nothing triggers nostalgia for me as much as this song does.
Michael was soooooo proud of his baby sister! {Still is!} Janet worked very hard, to get where she is at here in 2020, and still is! A beautiful woman, a talented woman, a great dancer, a legend, an Icon! We love you Ms. Jackson!
The 80's were the best time for Janet! This song wraps it up! Love it!
+Heshlyn Vijay Ehm, no, the 90s were spectacular for Janet also! The 80s were just a more innocent era in music for everyone.
+Igbogadi True! The janet. album changed everything! I still love her 80s stuff though!
+Heshlyn Vijay Actually every songs of her are timeless.
No little one, it was just the beginning, actually... but what would one know if they were not there.
written by janet Jackson and jimmy jam and terry Lewis. her first #1
Reached #1 on the Hot 100 on September 13, 1986.

@@altheaharris she was 20 when this went to #1
The irony was that Jesse Johnson produced her before Jam and Lewis, but it flopped...
