  • There is a lot of talk about Layering and how great it is for Adventure riding. Is it really that great? Is Layering for everyone or should you stick to an all in one Adventure suite? It is time I find out.

      I'm starting this season with a full suit from @revit. A Defender jacket and pants. I really like the quality of the Revit products line, But it is heavy and I feel it restricts my movement sometimes. I would like to see an option with the same level of protection and lighter in weight and provide more flexibility.

    Looking sharp in the new suite Tjommi! This video is just great and i'm sure it will help out many out there, who is in the market for new gear. Awesome to compare prices and weight as well. To me who has used layering system for more than 10 years, there is no going back for ADV. For me the benefits are obvious like in any outdoor activitie and how we gear up. This mostly to how flexible the gearing up is with the standalone abrasion/impact protection layer. Fun litle fat friend You have out there 👀😂 Thanks for the shout outs and for beeing a part of your inspiration or the one who trick You in to bad descisions 😂 Hopefully You will this philosophy even in real and practical riding. Good report TS. Another high quality vid. Much appreciated. I'm interested in your trial. I've met with Mosko Moto folks and observed their products. Definitely a set up for me to consider. I'm at a cross roads of buying new gear. My original products are a little dated in design and I have gotten much smaller. I currently have a new Lim Carlsbad jacket but haven't the pants yet. The Mosko Moto ones look comfortable. But like your tests, it's different than just putting one suit on trying to layer up for safety. However where I live in the Appalachian mountains the summers are terrible hot and near 100% humidity. Like riding in a Swed sauna. Have a good year out on the T7. Be safe and do/film as much as possible. I have new total right knee now and appreciate the viewing opportunities during rehab. Then the left one. Take care my Nordic ADV friend.

      I never tried the Carlsbad myself, that is two layers right? a little bit lighter and not so many pockets? I can't even begin to understand how the climate is over there. Here it is 100% humidity as well, but always cold 🤣 There will be a lot of time on the bike this year, so I hope that will be many great videos. I understand that It will take some recovery before you are playing soccer again. Goodspeed to you mate, and hope the surgery was successful 🙏🏻

  • @steveh545
    @steveh545 2 місяці тому

    cool. looking forward to your long term review. I think layering is about 'flexibility', as much as anything else. An ADV suit is sort of all or none. But like you said, for you, in colder weather, if you need all the layers anyway, maybe easier to toss on 1 item and start riding.

    • @tshansen
      @tshansen  2 місяці тому +1

      Yeah, I think that as well, but that extra flexibility comes at a cost in extra space in the luggage or what not. Nothing is perfect but some of it makes much more sense the further south you go. Cheers mate ☕️

  • @REDFred
    @REDFred 2 місяці тому

    Nice video mate, I was thinking of using layers for a longer time too but couldn’t find the right armour for me yet. I think that the fact of every layer having only one purpose let’s you suit up perfectly for the actual situation. But it means also more luggage, less ease (getting dressed up) and I can imagine that it hinders your ability to move (depending on the protection)

    • @tshansen
      @tshansen  2 місяці тому

      Yeah, finding the right armour was a pain in the ass for me as well... I'm tall and skinny and nothing fit me right. But the super shirt fits the best of the ones I have tried on. I don't like the hockey style armour. to bulky. From what I have figured out and how I pack my gear. The only extra luggage space I need is for the outer shell jacket. That I can store easy under the bever tail, I don't need to put it into the bags. Everything else I have with me anyway. And if I would go down to Spain or a area I know it will be worm even if it rains, I bring I super light (thin) rain gear to put on if it starts pouring down. I feel more flexible and agile on the bike with this new system. It is really strange, I know it is the same weight, but it feels much lighter. But is this enough for me to switch to the light side? The fact that you need to dress up and down that much is something I'm not really liking.

    But, if you love your Klim all-in-one gear, why not try a Klim for layering, like the Klim Traverse. I bought mine 3 years ago and I have been very happy with it. Price is now 15.000 NOK for the jacket and pants in total(1283 Euros). It keeps the rain out, never had a leak, it has all the armour except your back ( I used the D3O from my old Icon Raiden suit). It is very comfortable to wear. Lightweight. Nice pockets, good ventilation. And actually, it still looks like new. Never washed it but carefully used high pressure washer on it after gravel rides. Most people has inner- and mid layer to use with the suit 🙂

    • @tshansen
      @tshansen  2 місяці тому +2

      That is a good and valid question my friend. Because I'm lucky enough to have the opportunity to test this out for free.. I don't think I would ever dear to try this (because I'm so happy with the Badlands suit) if I had to pay for everything. And my Klim gear is still right next to the other gear, so I will pick that again if I'm not happy or this don't work for my needs. And the Super Shirt is always nice to have no matter what gear I end up using in the future. 🔥

    I have the Klim Badlands Pro set, as well as Adventure Specs Supershirt, their Mongolia pants, and some Mosko Moto gear. The first thing I did was to remove the protection from my Badlands jacket and instead wear the supershirt underneath. Then I could use my badlands, Dakar, or Mosko Moto Rak, depending on what I needed.
    I find now that I tend to leave the Badlands Pro gear at home more, since it is too warm in the summer. I went out riding today in +5C weather, and instead of the Klim Badlands Pro jacket, wore the Supershirt, Mosko Ectotherm, and Rak pullover jacket. It was perfect, did not feel as heavy, and is still AA rated. In the summer, I wear the Supershirt with a Klim Dakar jacket or Mosko jersey. I like the layering system better, it’s more flexible in its use. The Rak Pullover I also often wear even when not riding, as it is a great rain jacket. 👍

      @@tshansen I personally find the armor to fit more secure with the Supershirt compared to my Badlands Pro. Maybe what contributes to this is that I use a size L (6’3”/94kg) which makes it fit rather snugly. I don’t find this a negative, as the fabric stretches well, and once zipped up, it feels like “a glove.”
      The Badlands Pro jacket also, in general feels heavy, until you get it on. I think it feels better in combination with the Supershirt, as the jacket becomes a bit “looser,” but still likely offers even better abrasion protection.
      I really like the Supershirt, due to its AA rating and the choices it presents.
      As for even more protection, I think the new Alpinestars Tech Air Off-Road looks very interesting. It’s likely the future of an even more optimal solution, albeit maybe a bit more bulky.
      I just want to mention that I always also look at your UA-cam videos to see what gear and trips you present. This since I discovered that you always look for the best quality. An interesting video Thomas, I think a lot comes down to personal preference and the type of riding you do what works for some may not for others. This a very subjective topic when considering the factors of quality, price, protection and ease of use. Pity you didn’t include the Adventure Spec layering system as they are comparable to the two other companies. When I ride offroad I like to layer up because I like the armor next to my body (works beter when falling off the bike) and depending on the terrain, you can start in 4 degrees but end up in 20 degrees sweating your ass off in technical terrain and dropping a layer or two.

    For regular road touring with the odd easy gravel road on my 1200GS I prefer just a regular jacket, Dainese springbok.
    If the riding is going to be technical and I’m on the 450 I use layering. My current set up is the adventure Spec supershirt, back, chest and shoulder armor removed. Instead I wear an Alpinestars A10 over it. AdvSpec trailhead jersey which has a zip and is a game changer. A Klim Raptor GTX over that if needed and either the Mosko Ectotherm or jackaloft or the AdvSpec Baltic hybrid as a mid layer.
    Bottoms wearing the klim tactical pro pants as a base layer with the AdvSpec linesman pants.
    This has been many years in the making and I’m finally happy and it’s my second season with this setup

    Hi Thomas, really interesting video. I see that with both systems the bottom of the mid-layer could get wet in raining conditions. How do you do to prevent this? Do you flip up the bottom of the mid layer? Do you have some zip system for attaching the pants to the jacket? For sure you know that when it is going to rain heavily the water wants to get in for any free space. I would like to point out, maybe for another video, what about the free gap between helmet and the neck of the jacket, how do you deal with this? Storm neck? I got one of Klim which solves that problem, but just curious what do you think from your perspective. Best, Ruben.

      Yes, this was the first thing I noticed myself. the heated jacket is just a little bit too long in front. I just tuck it down into the pants, the cord is so long that is no problem, same with the on button. Or there is a skirt inside the jacket. Like you find on many ski gear or snow jackets. to prevent snow and wind from coming in. You can take that on, and stuff the jacket over it. becomes a little bit bulky but no problem when sitting. This is a great request video I can make, a short 2-3 minute video about how I address this. The neck I don't find to be a problem. I tighten it with the cord so it get's more snug, and I don't wear anything that will soak in water, this will only lead the water in under the jacket. It is actually better to leave the neck a little bit exposed and lett the water pry away the water. (if this make sense) I have never had a issue with water getting down in my klim jacket. Will see how this work on my new system. And it helps to have heated jacket so the neck don't get cold. Cheers mate. Good questions. thank you ☕️

    I went with a layering system 3 years ago and I'm still a big fan of it.
    Beside fitting I decided based on 2 points: a) price b) Made in Europe
    Remark: looks like your mid layer is longer than the shell layer and in rainy conditions it may get wet.
    I hope the gear will support your needs and is comfortable,
    Bernd 💙💛🏁🤛🏼

      Yeah, the heated jacket from Mosko is a little bit long, so if it rains I stuff it inside the pants or curl it up into the jacket and put on the wind barrier that goes around your waist.

    Utrolig bra video Thomas. Vurdere selv å bytte til full Leatt armor og mosko moto basilisk system, primært pga varmen og mulighet til å droppe jakka. Men er litt bekymret for at det bli ubehagelig å ha på body armor og knebeskyttere flere dager på rad, og ikke minst måtte gå rundt med det på spisesteder og småstopp. Er også litt usikker på om det blir så hassle å ta på utstyret hver gang jeg skal ut å kjøre, at jeg går tilbake til vanlig mc dress på turer. Blir spennende å høre dine betraktninger rundt dette etter årets sesong. Ønsker deg en riktig god sommer!

      Dette er helt klart noen av mine største bekymringer også. Her oppe i nord er det svært lite av fordelene jeg ser at jeg selv kommer til å bruke. Jeg kan telle på en hånd de sikkert 100.000km eller mer jeg har kjørt i min badland suit hvor det har vært for varmt. Men når det er sagt, så har jeg ikke kjørt sørover på sommeren når det er som varmest. Det er mulig jeg havner på en to dress løsning om dette ikke er så fantastisk som alle skal ha det til. Selv så har jeg fortsatt mine tvil, men jeg skal teste det skikkelig 🙈 God sommer til deg også. Kommer oppfølging så snart jeg føler jeg har nok erfaring til å kunne konkludere.

    Tjommi, I have done exactly the same! - taken the D3O from another suit and swapped out the Forcefield pads. I have gone with the level 1 D3O instead of level 2 so not only is it more comfortable but also marginally slimmer too. Like you, I am lucky I can try out these swaps as well as possessing the options of the Knox jacket (thanks Nomad!), the Forcefield armour and a small variety of Klim suits to wear what the time of year and type of riding demands.
    The conclusion is - probably nothing is perfect BUT some combinations allow us to ignore those remaining imperfections, and that's enough.

    Nice video Thomas, really interesting review and discussion. I'm pretty sure I'll stick with my Rev'it Vertical Jacket and Klim pants for the Winter..ie November to March, but i will try a different set up for the rest of the year, probably a mixture of Mosko Moto and Adventure Spec. 2 questions my friend...does the Mosko moto heated jacket roll up fairly small..or would that damage the heating elements..? And what knee protection are you using..? Cheers, Steve 💚

    • @tshansen
      @tshansen  2 місяці тому

      Thank you Stephen. Yes I may find me in the situation where I use more gear depending on the season, not just stick to one. I like the ease of just having one suit and be done with it. The mosko jacket has kevlar heated panels, so they can be stuffed or rolled up without taking damage. I use some extra heavy duty MTB knee pads. So I can use them for mountain biking as well. Not only Motorcycle. They are probably not the best for heavy off road, but for my kind of adventure riding it should hold up fine. It is from a Norwegian brand called Sweat Protection

    Great video. 👍 Personally. I use Oxford Mondial 2.0 Advanced suit. This cost me £500 GDP. (579euro) Personally, I think some brands you have to pay far too much for them. when you can get the exact same performance from a cheaper setup. My Oxford suit I has never let me get wet in torrential rain for a whole day riding. I have upgraded the armour over the year to D3O AA level. I have worn this suit for over 14000 miles here in Ireland. I ride ALL winter when I can down to Zero deg when it isn't icy roads. With my suit with its built-in Thermal layer and wearing a Marino wool top and leggings, I have never ever felt cold while riding. But I will admit the suit does get wayyy too warm in summer when the temp gets higher than 25deg. after this point, the venting is not adequate enough. BUt personally, I couldn't be bothered with all the adding & removing layers. I like that I pull on my jacket and trousers and that's it. I open the vents and they work well enough up to 20-25deg. Here in Ireland we don't see higher than 30 Ever LMAO... I prefer the convenience of one suit does all.

    • @tshansen
      @tshansen  2 місяці тому +2

      Well, that I have to agree on mate. Some of the gear we find today is really expensive and makes you wonder if it is really worth it. But this comes down to how much you use it as well... some people just ride 3000-6000 miles every year, some ride all year around every day. Then a suit or clothing you can rely on is key and way more important. And in some cases (with membrane clothing) you get what you pay for. I'm outdoor man and have been living close to the sea and mountains all my life, and I know really well how much crap and poor gear and equipment that is out there compare to some of the great ones. And that can sometimes be reflected in the price. We have the same here in Norway. It is not many days a year it is over 25 degrees. And when it Is hot like this, I tend to not want to ride or camp. But if you want to ride in warmer climate for longer periodes of time, it is great to have the option to dress down without compromising on the safety or protection.
      I have also been a one suit does it all type of guy for 8 years now. So it was time to see if I would like the other, or if I will stay on the dark side 😂 Cheers

    The two concepts aren't really comparable, in my opinion, just different tools. I use my Badlands for shoulder seasons because it's an easy all-in-one solution for bad & unpredictable weather, typically cooler weather. It worked well for the Arctic trip I took as well. The layering works well in variable to hot conditions, where the mornings/ evenings can be cool and the daytime is hot. It's nice to be able to adjust as needed. I do think there is a discussion to be had around safety, more specifically the garment construction, slide zones, etc. Most ADV riders have to travel over pavement to get off-road; for me, that's anywhere from 1 hour to 3 hours pavement to get to where I want to ride off-road, so the gear has to be able to withstand a pavement slide should that happen. I like my skin where it currently is. Having said that, I prefer the armour attached to me and not my jacket or pants, which can move around. Cheers, my friend. I look forward to your riding season.

    • @tshansen
      @tshansen  2 місяці тому +1

      I don't mind having a discussion about safety on even playing grounds. I highly recommend you to take a look at Ryans latest video (Fortnine) I have seen similar statistic around accidents that happens in Norway, because of the job I have and personal interests. This is off course stuff I can't share, but gives me a much better insight of what is safe and what people believe is safe. And sometimes this discussions feels like trying to convince the flat earthers that the earth is round.
      Yes, there should be some slide resistant in some garment, everyone needs to define what is safe for them. Loosing some skin I'm willing to take compared to broken bones, puncture lungs, torn of vanes etc. Cheers mate 🔥
