  • We are now entering the year 2023 and some of us are looking to upgrade our Action Cam. This is how I setup my PRO settings in the DJI Osmo Action 3 & Osmo Action 4, and how you can easily colour grade D-Cinelike footage in Davinci Resolve. And I talk about the reasons I choose the DJI Osmo Action 3 over the GoPro Hero 11. Hope you find it useful.

    After this video was released, DJI has upgraded the camera software that includes 10.bit colours and Rocksteady+ (insane crop) I still setup the camera the same way, I only choose 10.bit instead and this force the camera into H.265 compression.

      Hi, I'm currently trying to find the best setups for vlogging, especially moto vlogging... I'm using the new firmware and while I was very impressed with RS+ (I use that whenever i dont mount the camera vertically, then I use HorizonSteady) I noticed that my footage started showing annopying screen jitters when I started to use an ND8 filter and fixed shutter speed.
      Apparently, and many YT videos seem to say the same, most action cams including my Action 2 and Osmo Action3 seem to have issues with the stabilisation quality when using ND filters and manual shutter settings.
      I'm hoping to reduce or eliminate this by going back to RockSteady (not plus) and maybe minor settings adjustments (shutter speed)...

      @@maxx2174 Yeah, i have this as well on cloudy days or going into areas with a lot of shade! The camera need more or higher shutter speed to work well! So i think it is around 1/200 or 1/250 that is the best shutter speed on this camera

    Hey Thomas! this was so helpful! I just got the adventure combo, OA3 for a great price brand new! Very excited about this, going to try and record some of my rides this year!
    What I experience as I get older, is I really like to look back at pictures of old trips etc, it means more and more to me.
    I realized I never really had taken so many pictures, and never really any video. Hopefully that will change now!

    Looks awesome, nice of you to show how easy it could be to just adjust the colors a bit. Will probably order the action 3 later this year. The only downside for me is the mic directions. With the gopro media mod i could choose to only pick up the sound from the rear shootgun mic, no external mic needed then. Maybe need to try the windslayer thing 🙂 have to try the LUT thing aswell 🙂

      Thank you so much Christopher, appreciate the support and the coffee ☕️🔥 Action Cam, and their colours are always a little bit difficult or challenging to colour grade, but I find this lut helps me a lot. And make it so much easier to have a consistent result. Yeah, I have seen a lot of videos about this, but I think In some of the cases it is just the lack of sharpness added from the camera compared to the gopro. Wide lenses like this will always have focus issues in close ups. But I'm no expert. I leve it up the others to speculate in this. I'm happy with mine so far 🎥 Cheers

    Nice work. I almost bought this at launch. It is softer than the gopro 10 and 11 with less detail, but still gives a pleasing image to my eye, and seems more practical (no overheating, etc..). What put me off is the lack of gyro files for post stabilisation. 10-bit colour was also said to be coming, but there is no official announcement form DJI on this or the gyro file. Given people have been asking for gyro data since the Osmo 2, I'm not sure DJI is interested. currently I'm holding off to see what any firmware updates bring, and how the gopro 11 mini stacks up.

      @tshansen  Рік тому +2

      Thank you mate, well... I read somewhere on the DJI forum that the 10-bit is on its way. But with that said, when you compare the 8bit and 10bit difference in the gopro 10/11 there is not that much of a difference. I would love to see a bigger sensor size and 10 bit in next years model or year after. For cinematic footage, the DJI wins without a doubt. Do you really need gyro data with the rocksteady? For my usage with action cams, I have never missed it. I have it for my Sony a7s iii but rearly use it there as well? The 11 mini looks really interesting, but the internal battery made me stay clear. We all know how the sessions camera did 😇 Thank you for this comment. Cheers

    Thank you! Great information. I just got my Action 3 two days ago and I will be using it for motocross videos. I will also be buying the Divinci Resolve software in a few days and I like the demonstration you did, very helpful. I'm finally moving away from my Garmin Virb XE cameras mainly for the better stabilization but I hate the thought of losing all the GPS features of the Garmin. I'm going to try and use two cameras, one Garmin and the Osmo with the Garmin software and hopefully get the GPS info and overlays on the video. Thanks again.

      Congrats on your new camera mate. And buying the Studio version of Davinci Resolve is worth every penny. Damn this software is just so damn good. Keep in mind that the colour page gives you way more freedom and options to tweak your footage. I just did a really simple explanation of how you can get a good picture from your camera. Tried to simplify it a lot. I never used the Garmin camera my self. Is the gps data that good? use it to record laps or where on the track you are when filming? need to look more into this. Cheers

      I absolutely love the Garmin Virb XE and the fantastic software that goes along with it as I have three of those cameras. The software does multicam editing and the cameras are very user friendly. These cameras came out about the time of the Hero 7 and they were superior to GoPro in every way but GoPro had the name and Garmin didn't catch on. Garmin came out with the Virb Ultra which was a terrible cam and then they made a 360 cam which was also terrible and they got out of the camera business. None of the other makers have the GPS features that Garmin had. In my videos I only use about 10% of it's capability. The cameras of today have much better stab which is what I'm after.

    Hi Thomas, will you recommend osmo action 3 for food vlogging indoors like restaurants? Can the soft images from low light footages be edited into a nice video? Im leaning towards DJI because of the price, but it seems many people recommend hero 11 for better image quality. Im just a beginner and will be filming both outdoors and indoors.

      I can recommend the Osmo action 3, but if it is better than the Gopro hero 11 is hard to say for that usage. I have never used mine as a vlogging style camera, nor have I used the hero 11. If one camera is better than the other (image wise) it is marginal, and all the other benefits of the DJI Osmo is way more important for me than what you get from the gopro.

Inside a house with normal warm lights you will probably want to set it closer to 4000! How bright a image looks in shaddow area is depending on shutter speed, iso and F stop 🤩

    Hi Thomas, do you have any rule of thumb on when to use ND filters and which one? I made a couple of videos over the weekend with my new Osmo Action 3, using the ND8 Freewell filter. They were shot quite early in the morning and later in the afternoon 9:30am, 2:30pm when the light is not the brightest here in the UK in January. Both videos there is quite a lot of blur in the parts of the shot (handlebars, TFT dash) that are relatively static. When I moved around on the bike for corners, or got a bit jolted by bumps, the image shows a lot of motion blur. I suppose if I used no ND filter, that may have been clearer in the image, whilst the scenery in the video rushing past may still be blurry due to the low-ish light. I will test it of course, but wondered if you had any rule of thumb?

    • @tshansen
      @tshansen  Рік тому

      No I don't to be honest. I see that the Osmo Action 3 need a certain amount of light the get the rocksteady to work properly. If your fps drops too low, you will se blurry or wavy footage. The grain in the footage can be eliminated to a degree with forcing the ISO to be low. but that will again affect your Rocksteady and mess up the footage. On a cloudy day this time a year without snow, I would drop the ND filter, rather let the camera adjust it self on auto shutter. But if it is sunlight I would use it.
      A good tip is to point your camera with the settings (pro mode) visible and see that the shutter speed is obove 1/50 to 1/200... if it is more than 1/200, I would put on the ND filter. I need to do some testing of my own to see if it behaves in the same way as my gopro or I need to do more adjustments.

    • @duckbeneathpigeons
      @duckbeneathpigeons Рік тому

      @@tshansen thanks! That shutter speed tip is exactly what I need, I think. I had not realised that the rock steady wouldn’t work if light is poor, that may explain some of the shakiness in my video.

    • @tshansen
      @tshansen  Місяць тому +1

      Well.... to understand the whole motion blur effect you need to understand what shutter speed does to the image. For normal movement you need a shutter speed of twice the framrate. like when I'm walking around I have 1/50 and a 25fps footage. (PAL region) but when you start moving faster. like a motorcycle, you can have higher shutter speed and still get the motion blur. Like 1/200 is good for riding footage, but the rocksteady on the Osmo Action 3 is so intense, it needs really high shutter speed to work. up towards 1/500 and this will take away the motion blur. If you put on a ND filter, you will only get shaky ruined footage. The micro jitters are intense. This is why I'm not using the Osmo action 3 anymore and got myself a GoPro Hero 12 🙌🏻
