    I'm a lil sus about the main character's favorite food too being a defining character thing. For those that suffer with eating disorders, whipped cream (especially low fat) is pretty low in calories, and some folks eat it as a special treat to replace ice cream when they're counting calories. Not that everyone else can't enjoy whipped cream, but given who the book is written by and the self harm in this book... I don't know, just seems sus xD

    • @LordHattie
      @LordHattie 6 місяців тому +35

      While this is entirely valid, the reason her favourite food is whipped cream is so much more self indulgent than that:
      It's Tyra Banks favourite food. Tookie is an admitted self insert.

    • @mermaidcatching
      @mermaidcatching 6 місяців тому +39

      @@LordHattieif it’s a self insert that probably lays more claim to the eating disorder theory considering she was a model. Not to speculate on her relationship with food (I myself prefer cool whip to ice cream), but most likely it was a “hack” she picked up in her modeling days from either somebody pushing an eating disorder onto her or another model who happened to have one.

    My favourite review of this book (Other than this one of course): ...although Modelland "promotes self-esteem and confidence in girls, it is less than empowering since it is all to a depressing consumerist end", calling it "a nonsensical, nightmarish, acid trip that seemed like it would never end" with "more made-up words and terms than a Klingon translation of a Dr. Seuss book", and emphasising that it "stops being funny when you realise just how long it is".

    oh no there's been a horrible head-on train crash between the uglies and the post hunger games YA competition-world genre. There's random plot snippets and unexamined themes everywhere, the front row is splattered with clinically unique YA protag names. shield the children's eyes so they don't have to watch as the hyper-shallow moral drags itself towards the agonizing, sequel bait conclusion. there's a seventh grade reading level premise impaled on gritty YA plot devices. oh the humanity.
    I think we should get a special discount at bookstores for honestly living through the lit phase where everyone wanted to chomp hunger games bit and ended up writing these ultra lame protags living in the melodramatic YA equivalent of whoville. the models up in modelland loved modelling a lot, but the protagonist, with an embarrassingly under researched and strictly convenient plot-relevant mental health crisis, did NOT.

I was fully convinced it was the only celebrity book that wasn't specifically because of how batshit insane the writing style is (in addition to, you know, the plot). I wonder if Tyra was just so controlling that she didn't let the ghost writer ghost write? I was expecting Tookie to be the daughter of the Belladonna because there was that part at the beginning where her dad doubted his parentage. Was that meant to be a twist? Why give the interesting plot reveal to the side character? It also makes sense why Creamy didn't like Tookie because of all that resentment. Maybe it would've been explained if subsequent books happened. Maybe it's also not that serious.
