    Back in the late 70's and early 80's,when this video aired, all young British trombonists,including me, were heavily influenced by the great studio player Don Lusher who used slide vibrato extensively.I agree,it now sounds dated and inappropriate and,if I played it played now,would use a more controlled lip vibrato.Styles change..

    • @crarytrombone9672
      @crarytrombone9672 4 роки тому +20

      I prefer the slide vibrato than any other kind of vibrato. I feel like that slide vibrato really brings out the difference of the instrument to the others that have valves. Especially on pieces like czardas which is a piece for the violin. I like to think of the slide as a string on the violin. So I can get more feel of the piece. With this said, the slide vibrato is more my style.

      Completely agree re the influence of Don Lusher - I was lucky enough to have him guest with our jazz orchestra when I was in my teens. Talk about being in awe of him - he was so professional and controlled in his playing.
      But, perhaps being old and old-fashioned myself, I don't think of it of your slide vib as dated. Perhaps classic or retro would be better terms? And I agree with Crary below that it is part of the character of the trombone. A decade later, do you still think of it as 'inappropriate'?
      Wonderful tone btw, Martin. Thanks for sharing.

I tried trombone in Jr. High school for a year but the director wanted me back on baritone because a made it sound more like music than the noise coming from the trombone I was playing.

All around an incredible performance, but for me the outstanding and unique quality you have is your tone colour - so sweet and gorgeous ... and so good in the low register too, that is by far best I've heard, unlike most trombones that have that more harsh chainsaw sound, yours is super smooth and rich - I wonder how you do it! Hope you are still enjoying playing and entertaining audiences!

    My personal preference is that I think this would have been better played slightly slower and with more accuracy in the notes. The listener gets the general idea of what the notes are, but there's a lot of "near enough" alternate positions in use that I think detracts from the performance.

    What I'm most impressed with is the double(and triple?) tongueing. Good job. You do the majestic trombone good service. I'm sure you impressed you professors in England with such great talent at such a young age!

    lol
    I love this guy's tone. Nice and dark. And his technique is uber, but his performance seems a bit... emotionless. Dunno. I think I like Lindberg's version better, even if it is a bit sloppy (not that I can do any better).

    Out standing trombone solo, certianly from the late great Don Lusher style of playing , you were born 40 years to late the british big band scene could have been doing with you ,their loss certainly someone elses gain.
